Imovie unable to capture DV, apple support told me that a pc is better!!!

I recently bought an apple imac with a view to editing DV footage taken previously.
I had captured some of these tapes on to a PC previously using Pinnacle studio. These files I was able to edit on imovie (once I had transferred them from the pc hard drive). HOWEVER although I could control my dv camera through imovie (and FCE) none of my old DV tapes could be captured to the imac. An error message states that the frame rate is incorrect.
I have apple care protection and have spent ages trying to get support for this only to be told that imovie will not capture my old DV tapes! The support person told me that I should go back to a PC!
Unfortunately I have just spent thousands on this very nice looking imac and FCE that is apparently unable to do the most basic capturing. Does anybody have any ideas (other than going back to pc) for getting my DV footage captured?
Needles to say I have foind all thi incredibly frustrating as a new apple user. Are these sorts of issues common to imacs?
cheers

Rupert, first be aware that I've never done what you are trying doing so I'm not an expert. But perhaps I can clarify some things to help others.
It's not entirely clear what you mean by "capture". The word normally means capturing video from a camcorder to iMovie/FCE. In fact, you say you can control your DV camera just fine, which I assume means you can capture video successfully from your camera to iMovie.
The problem you have, rather, seems to be the inability to IMPORT the DV video files previously captured on the PC.
Is that correct? Is the problem the inability to import those files?
An error message states that the frame rate is incorrect.
If yours is an import problem, that error message may be an important clue. iMovie can work with both NTSC and PAL video -- which have different frame rates -- but not both in the same project. It may be that your iMovie project is NTSC, but you're trying to import PAL video.
The General tab of iMovie preferences lets you set the default frame rate of a new project. In the popUp menu the bottom of the page, NTSC is 29.97 frames per second and PAL is 25. They become the default frame rate for new projects.
iMovie respects that frame rate for a new project, but will switch if you connect your camera and import some video of the OTHER type. If your camera is PAL, iMovie will switch your new NTSC project to PAL. Once switched, however, it won't switch back. Once switched to PAL, it will ONLY allow you to capture PAL video from a camera, and, I suspect, only allow you to import PAL video files.
So... If your PC-captured video files are PAL and your iMovie project is NTSC, iMovie might complain with that error. (But as I said earlier, I don't know for sure.) The trick may be to set the iMovie preference to match the captured DV files.
If you open one of the PC files in QuickTime Player, the Show Movie Info window will tell you its frame rate. Make sure your iMovie preferences are consistent with that frame rate, create a new iMovie project, and try to import the file. If it works, that was the problem.

    Hey Rich,
thanks for getting back to me,
I shot tape previously (in 2000) on a sony mini DV camcorder set to SP. I have since bought a new sony mini DV camcorder (DCR-HC40 NTSC).
With the new camera and a PC I was able to capture my 2000 tapes and edit them. I was also able to edit the earlier footage I had transffered from my PC hard drive to the i-mac on i-movie and FCE.
Unfortunatley everytime I have tried to capture my old tapes directly onto the i-mac I have had the message "preview disabled" from FCE and the following from i-movie:
"The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie can’t accept. Check your camera’s record mode (this is the setting that affects recording quality, which determines the total recording time on a tape). The mode must be set to “SP” or “LP.” If that doesn't help, try removing all the cables and batteries from the camera, wait a minute, replace them, and then reset the date, time, and record mode."
I have spent weeks on the support site and found a thread that recommended re-installing quicktime etc but nothing has worked.
I connect to the i-mac via firewire and am able to control the camera, capture my newly recorded miniDV's (so it is not a problem with the proprietary software application etc) but nothing seems to work for my old tapes.
Apple support told me that apple doesn't do older miniDV's and that a pc would be the only way I could capture my tapes. I couldn't believe it! Unfortuatley I no longer have access to my old pc.
Any ideas? Is there any other way of getting DV onto my i-mac?
And thanks for your interest in my problem here
    regards

There is no such thing as an "unlock code" for an iPhone. It's done through iTunes after being approved by the carrier it is locked to.
Go back to the carrier it is locked to and find out what the status is. If you paid someone else to unlock it, you got ripped off.

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple. We won't know what terms that iTunes Support think that you violated, but the most common reason is probably trying to use another country's store - you are in the same country as you have listed on your iTunes account ?

I have an iphone 4s that may have been hacked.  Apple support has suggested that a 3rd party software may have been downloaded allowing screen share.  I need all the info I can get as to how this could have been done and how to fix the problem.

The only way the iPhone could have been hacked in such a manner, at least by any method currently confirmed, is if the iPhone was jailbroken. Was yours?

  • HT2509 Despite what this article states, Apple support told me not to try to remove any fonts as it could cause other possibly serious problems.  Is there a program which can be safely installed which will keep at the top of the font list those fonts whic

An article in the New York Times yesterday told how to remove unwanted fonts from the Font Book.  I followed its instructions (the same as those on the webpage "support.apple.com/kb/ht2509") and was NOT successful in removing fonts.  Despite what the newspaper article and the web page stated, my attempts to remove fonts were unsuccessful.  I use perhaps 15-20 of the hundreds and hundreds of fonts, and deleting those I don't use would make choosing a font a lot faster.  I called support and was told not to try to remove any fonts which I myself had not added to the list(I have not added any) as doing so could cause significant problems elsewhere.  The support tech suggested that there might be independent software programs which would keep at the top of the list those fonts I have used, which sure would speed up the process of selecting a font.  Anyone know of such a program, or how to safely alter the font list Thanks.

I just spoke again to tech support and this time an answer was provided that works!  Choose the font you want to use, drag it to the left, and a new "unnamed" folder will appear.  Continue to drag into that folder fonts you want to use.  You can click onto that folder to change its name.  Then when using font book merely click on that folder to open it and select the font wanted.  This tech rep also confirmed that you should NOT try to delete individual fonts as they are part of the basic operating system; he did confirm that the apple web page in parentheses above says otherwise, and will refer that to higher ups to see about removing or modifying that page.

  • Has anyone tried to sync photos with the cable to itunes rather than how it should work via Wifi with iCloud?  The info on the Apple support page says that you should backup to both iTunes & iCloud, but 2x the Genius Bar told me not to.  Help please!

Has anyone tried syncing their photos to iTunes with the cable in addition to how it should work via wi-fi on iCloud?  On the Apple support info page, it says you should do both types oof backup. The Genius Bar told me 2x not to do both.  What experiences has the community had?  I'm also having syncing issues with photos most recently as well as contact updates.  (I have an iPhone 4S with the iOS7.1)  Thanks much!

It sounds like you are mixing up several different things (or not using the terminology that Apple uses).
One thing is backup. You can backup via icloud or via iTunes and there is no reason you cannot do both -- I do and the second link below from Apple gives instructions. Doing a backup will include photos from the Camera Roll in the backup but you will not be able to see the results -- all of the backup data will be stored on iCloud or on your computer in files that are not designed to be accessed by you for any purpose other than restoring to your phone in the event of a problem. More information on backup:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262
If you simply want to transfer photos from an iPhone to a computer, the terminology Apple uses for that is "import" and it is done without iTunes. New photos (taken after you change the setting) can be done via PhotoStream which is a cloud based option. The other option is via cable. Instructions for both: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
Syncing via iTunes (with regard to photos) is used to transfer photos the other direction -- from the computer to the phone. Instructions for that http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

  • Does the Free iMovie HD download on the Apple Support site still work

Hi Forrest and Karsten, et. al:
Well guys, I just called to Apple store salesman to get my fix before someone commits me to rehab. I was going to buy the new iMac that came out today, with all the bells and whistles. i had to terminated the sale. The salesman had never heard of the free iMHD download for those who had purchased iM08. When I gave him the download URL, he said he couldn't pull it up on the Apple site and that he had to Google it up. He said that since he couldn't access it on the Apple site, the download is probably no longer available. He also said that, if I tried to load iM06 HD off my old iLife disk into Leopard, it would change my OS back to Tiger. I don't know how one can tell if the download still works or not unless one actually downloads it. I can't tell if it will download to leopard because I have a G4 with Tiger. Before I buy the iMac, I need to know if iMovie 06HD can still be downloaded, and if it will work on Leopard in the new iMac.

Yes Forest, I'm about to pull my hair out; all three or four of them! Carl, the link you posted to the free download is the same URL that I gave the Apple salesman over the phone, from whom i was about to buy an iMac. When he said he had never heard of the free download and couldn't pull it up on the Apple site, I suggested that he Google it. He did and could see it, but said that it was probably no longer functional because it was posted in 2006, and because he could not pull it up on the Apple site. This caused me paranoia that, maybe it's still there on the internet, but useless as the salesman said. This is the point where I asked him about loading iM06HD into a new iMac from my old ilife disk, and he responded that it would make Leopard revert to Tiger. This whole conversation really bothered me. What he told me is not consistent with the stuff I thought I had been reading and seeing about iM06 HD, i.e.,
    ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NNFnacJSdw )
Near the end of this video on AVCHD (Forest knows about my AVCHD issue) and iMovie, the reviewer mentions that one can import AVCHD video into iMovie 08, then move the clips into iMovie 06HD for editing (at least that's what I think I'm hearing). Either the Apple salesman or the reviewer in the video is wrong. I think you guys would agree that the Apple salesman "should" be the most credible. In the interest of being abundantly cautious with what I put into the new $2500 imac that I want, I want to know as much as I can about what I put in it. This way, I don't do something experimental and end up with a $2,500 smokey crater in my floor, and all three or four of my hairs singed off!

  • Why am I unable to login to Apple Support site from my iPhone, but have no problem from my desktop?

Why am I unable to login to the Apple Support site from my iPhone, but have no problem from my desktop?

I have never been able to log into this forum on my phone. I have the settings set as noted above. Any further ideas?
Never mind, I just tried it again and all of a sudden it worked. All I did was retype the last part of my e-mail address.

  • Apple support people said that I would have to pay $199

I was to told by the Apple support people that I would have to pay $199
to have them look at the problem.
They know what the problem is. Apple knows what the problem is. Yet they will not fix it.
My wifi is not available on my iPhone 4s and the Bluetooth is searching, constantly.
    The little wheel is spinning.

  • How do I get music I've purchased in past, and it is not in my purchased quick links, since down loading and installing iOS 5, apple support told me to restore as new and everything would be restored!!!! And it did not. This was for my I phone 4

Need help getting my past purchased music, it's not in quick links under purchased, is there anyway apple can help me get it back. Hundreds of dollars lost

Music is NOT part of the iPhone backup process. It would be redundant and make the backups very large and take too much time. Music should already exist in your iTunes library. If you're syncing on a regular basis, purchased items should be copied to iTunes automatically. If they are not, you can use File>Transfer Purchases in iTunes to transfer them.
Go into your account in iTunes. You may be able to re-download purchased music from there. It is not possible to do so in every country yet. Backing up your media is your responsibility.

  • Cannot install windows 8.1 on imac 5k - apple support says "Correct, that machine can't install windows" Boot camp fail

I have a brand new imac 5k, with 4ghz i7, 295x GPU, 3.1TB fusion drive.  Bought the machine so I could dual boot - I need windows for VR Dev work.
I've spent the last week and a half on tech support calls with Apple Senior Tech agents, and Microsoft agents as well, and today have been told that indeed this machine cannot run windows 8.1.  Apparently Apple engineering knows about the issue, but says the problem is microsoft's.  Ugh.
The latest iteration of the issue comes when installing 8.1 onto an external thunderbolt SSD (without even using boot camp) - I go through the EFI installer, convert the drive to GPT, format it as ntfs, but when I select the partition to install onto, the installer says it can't find the partition it just created.  Smuh?
I've also tried the install through boot camp.  This installation actually worked twice, but the install was unstable.  After booting back into osX, then returning to Windows, the windows install went corrupt and couldn't be repaired.  Subsequent attempts to install windows yielded a flurry of different errors, including "windows doesn't support GPT in this mode" or "the disk is locked, please unlock the disk" or "MBR must be converted to GPT" (where once I converted to GPT, the drive could no longer be found, despite the operation completing successfully.)
At any rate, it's a huge mess.  I'd happily return the machine for a different config, but the company I bought it from will only swap it for a similar model -- so I've spent a pile on a machine that does not function as advertised; apple says "too bad, talk to Microsoft." Microsoft says "too bad, we've never seen this, this is an apple issue."
Has anyone out there gotten windows up and running on an iMac5k with fusion drive?  If so, did you have to go through a crazy maze to make it work?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    MC

After much gnashing of teeth, and a half dozen support calls, I'd all but given up.  I finally seem to have solved this though - sort of - by installing windows 8.1 on boot camp on an older iMac, then cloning the bootcamp disk to an external thunderbolt drive via Winclone.  That worked seamlessly, sticking to winclone's instructions, and I can boot via EFI to Windows 8.1 on the new iMac.  So far so good.
I usually install W8.1 via EFI by using DU and a Free Space partition. The 3TB Fusion is first split into the underlying SSD/HDD physicals. OSX and Windows OSes are installed on SSD via EFI (no BCA). The OSX part and half the HDD are then used to create a new CS volume. The other HDD half becomes NTFS for non-Windows OS files. The Hybrid MBR method is completely unsatisfactory with the 3TB Fusion drive.
How is the TB/Winclone image for performance of the OS (since pagefile.sys is also on the TB)?
