IMovie v10.0.2 under Mavericks - I keep losing work

I have suddenly started losing my work when I create a project. I lost a whole long days work and today I deliberately closed my iMovie library and quite iMovie. WHen I opened it up again, the project had gone - and this time the imported clip as well. I am suspending all work until I have a fix for this.
I am using mutiple libaries, which is a major advantage of iOmovie 10 IMHO. I have one for general use and another work historic familiy 8mm filds I am working on. In the case in hand, both libraries are on my internal SSD, so it cannot be an issue with failing to dismount an external drive propery.
My basic procedure is
Import a .mov file as a new event.
Create a new project and store it in the same event as the .mov file.
Drag the imported clip into r=the project time-line, add title page and some captions.
Play the project and all looks fine
Quite iMovie (I have also tried closing the library before quiting iMovie.)
Re-launch iMovie and open the library
The project is no longer in the event (at least as far as iMovie is concerned) and today it has lost the imported clip as well.
If I open the library in the Finder using Show Package Contents I can see stuff in there, but iMovie is not recognising it.
Things were working OK a couple of weeks ago - I have another event in the same library with its project therein, and it is fine.
Has anybody had similar problems? Maybe the library is corrupted in some way?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Follow-up... I created a new library and this has worked fine. I was also able to drag an existing event (including a project) from the old non-functioning library. I think the library was corrupted in such a way that any new work was lost to iMovie.
I suspect that this corruption may have arisen from quiting iMovie while it was still doing work in the background. This can take some time, and, although iMovie displays a busy dial it is easy to miss. It is also supposed to warn you if you try to quit while it is still doing work in the background. I may have quitted it somehow despite, or got fed up waiting.
My advice: wait for background processing to finish before doing anything significant, and be very sure everything is complete before quitting.

How to remove duplicate POP messages in Mail under Mavericks

Hello
I'm having some significant problems with Apple Mail, and despite having researched widely, I haven't been able to find a solution yet. Here is my tale of woe...
My set up is that I use Mail with 5 separate accounts, downloading all messages using POP. I keep ALL my mail (even the trash) so that I have a permanent record of all conversations, going back more than 10 years - this is about 250,000 emails in around 250 subfolders. I'm running the latest version of Mavericks on a 2010 MBP. I have no intention of moving to IMAP - I need to keep a local archive of all my mail.
A few months ago I was having problems with Mail being very slow to load and search emails. I decided to rebuild the mailboxes, but afterwards discovered that thousands of messages in the inbox of one of my accounts (and some of the sub-folders) had disappeared. Once I realised I tried to go back to a recent Time Machine back up, but, for whatever reason, that part of the back up hadn't worked properly and I was unable to recover the previous status. I left it while I decided what to do, and had time to deal with it...
The last 2 years worth of emails on that account were still archived on gmail, so last week I decided to try redownloading the whole lot (something like 72,000 messages), and then planned to use one of the scripts I was aware of to remove the duplicates to the trash, and then remove any duplicates in the trash forever. That ought to mean I at least had an archive of the last two years of missing messages, even if I had no record of which ones had been flagged or replied to, etc.
The downloading took about 24 hours to complete, and I now have almost 70,000 messages in the inbox of that account. I also rebuilt all the folders again, which doesn't seem to have resulted in any further loss of messages as far as I can tell. However, I hadn't figured on two things:
1. Mail 'hides' duplicate messages, meaning that all of the messages I've downloaded are showing as unread, and I can't differentiate the ones I already had in my Inbox, and the new downloads. When I click on those apparently unread messages I can see if they have been replied to or forwarded, etc, but there's no obvious way for me to remove the ones I have already dealt with to the trash, without going through them all manually, which is clearly impossible.
2. The scripts I'd found for removing duplicates don't work. Andreas Amann's Remove Duplicates script doesn't work under Mavericks, and he has abandoned the project. I've also tried the remove-duplicate-messages.scpt made by Jolly Roger (http://jollyroger.kicks-***.org/software/), and while it *sometimes* works on individual subfolders on my Mac (but as far as I can tell removes the duplicate in that folder, rather than the newly downloaded version), mostly it doesn't work at all - it creates a 'Remove Duplicate Messages' folder on my desktop, a log inside it and a folder for removed messages, but nothing appears in the duplicates folder.
So, I'm left in a position where I have 70,000 apparently unread messages in my Inbox, a massively bloated Mail library (which has pretty much doubled in size, because of the 'hidden' messages), a slow and unresponsive Mail program. I've come to the conclusion that there must be some corrupted email somewhere, which probably caused the original email haemorrhage, and may still be causing the inability to remove duplicates. Mail is so slow as to be almost unuseable.
I figure I have a number of options:
1. I could live with the situation and just archive most of the Mail in my inbox, with the side effect that there will be a bunch of messages I have never replied to that are missed.
2. I could abandon the last week's efforts and revert to the version of Mail I was using a week ago, and then redownload the recent emails from my various accounts. That would still leave me without those thousands of emails I lost on my local machine.
3. I could find another way to deal with this. Can I get the remove duplicates script working? Should I revert to the version of Mail from a week ago, download ALL the messages again, but do it in a way that allows me to find the duplicates and remove them? Should I move to another email program altogether (which would presumably be massively disruptive to my work!)
Anyway, apologies for the essay length of this request, and thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer!

thanks for the tip, but I don't think that solves my problem, which is that Mail apparently hides the duplicates, so they're still there, you just can't differentiate or remove them. I actually *need* the duplicates there so I know I've got everything, but then I need to be able to move the ones I know I've dealt with from my inbox to an archive/trash, and/or remove them completely so Mail isn't totally bloated

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does it take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

Printing to an Epson 7900 under Mavericks

Anyone experienced problems printing to an Epson 7900 under Mavericks OS X 10.9 ?
According to Epson I have the latest drivers installed for the 7900, V9.04
I have 2 MACS - a MacBookPro running under Mountain Lion and I've updated my MacBook Air to run 10.9.
No problems printing the same file from the MacBookPro.
On the MacAir, I certainly see the printer; can send a file to it - but it prints and is terribly garbled. I see supply levels on the MacAir too.
But the interaction with the Driver is strange - it keeps reverting back to my HP 2100, Updating the settings in the printing Presets doesn't stick, etc.
the print is an almost total mess - it's the right size and you can see the image and some parts are fine - but the rest of it looks like it's done with drastic motion blur (so that looks like the driver is scrambling something).
If nobody else has seen this, then I will start by deleting the driver; re-installing it all and so forth - but just interested to see if anybody else out there has had trouble with it.

IPhoto under Mavericks

Got major problem. Can't order previosly published projects under Mavericks. Nothing else has changed so it looks like a software problem. Anyone with any ideas?

Created a number of books in iPhoto and ordered them from Apple store via the software link. No problems except now that I have upgraded to Mavericks, I can't reorder the books since I keep getting a message at the end of the uploading to the Apple store which says "An error occurred uploading your Order" and asks if I wish to cancel order or retry. I have retried a number of times but to no avail. I have tried ordering from my MacAir instead of my iMac but still not luck. I have restared with the shift held down to move to safe startup but still no luck. I have reinstalled iPhoto but still no luck. It would be great if the Apple store could just reprint my books since nothing has changed and I just need more copies but this doesn't seem to be an option.

IMovie v10 stretches photos... iMovie '11 (v9) works fine

I have just been upgraded to iMovie v10. Photos that are in an iMovie v9 project that has been 'updated' seem to be stretched. I've played with fit and crop in v10 and no change in aspect - all remained stretched. The original v9 settings were cropped with Ken Burns, and cross image transitions applied to some (xfade, etc.).
The same project opened in V9 still fine... hallelujah!
New projects created in v10 with photos displayed with ken Burns is fine, no stretching.
Does anyone know how the update process can be completed without streching the aspect of the photos? The only alternative is to keep v9 for old projects and create new projects with v10.... a little cumbersome!
Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

The project output aspect ratio in v9 is 16:9 PAL 25 fps, and in v10 it's 1080p HD. However, if I create a new video project in v10 with the same photos, it appears fine, photos are "ken burns'ed" perfectly, no stretching; only photos updated from v9 to v10 appear stretched in the updated v10 project.
The original photos are: 5184 x 3888 pixels (aspect ratio of: 4:3) jpegs.

EHD under snow leopard not seen under maverick

Hello Apple Community,
I've recently bought a brand new Macbook pro under Maverick. The External Hard Drive, used on my old Macbook air under snow leopard, is not recognized by Maverick. That's strange because it is seen and can be used on the other laptop, but not on the new one.
In the finder preferences, the box "show EHD" is checked.
But when I use the disk utility, it sees only the hard drive on the laptop, not the EHD...
Does anybody have a solution for this?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

Missing Projects in iMovie 09 after upgrading to Mavericks

Using iMovie 09 (8.0.6)
Before Mavericks came out I moved (copied) my iMovie Projects and Events to an external hard drive (from within iMovie, not the OS).
Everything was where it should be and worked properly after I was done.
My first time back into iMovie since upgrading to Mavricks and now my projects are missing in iMovie. The projects are present on the external disk in the OS, but they don't show up under the external drive from within iMovie's Project Library window pane. The events are present on the external when viewed from either within iMovie or the OS.
I've found the solution to delete the UpdatedToiMovie10 file, but since I didn't upgrade iMovie, that's not an option for me.
Anybody have any ideas?

I do suspect there must be some incompatibility between Mavericks and iMovie v. 8 because all was working in your previous operating system (was that ML, Lion or Snow leopard?) and the OS upgrade should not have touched your Projects folder (it is still at the root level of your external drive isn't it?.
Did you get iMovie 10 when you upgraded to Mavericks? (I suspect not because you would have needed to have iLife '11 and then you would have had iMovie 9). I am wondering whether iMovie 10 would be able to see and update your missing projects. Trouble is that would be a $15 (I think) gamble which may not pay off.
(Actually iMovie 9.0.9 doesn't launch at all under Mavericks on both of my Macs for reasons I still don't understand - for most people it works OK) but I was able to update projects to iMovie 10 and have now moved on to FCP 10.1.

OK I HAVE TRIED THIS. i updated to mavericks without even thinking about itunes 11, unfortunately it wiped my 10,7 but i got rid of 11 and did the pacifist way and got 10.7 again only to find it completely ****** my system, all of a sudden songs are stopping at random points, process ituneslibrary.blahblah keeps self quiting and popping up annoying warning messsages, also NOTHING could be updated or redownloaded off the app store while 10.7 was installed.
i attempted to fix permissions, this only made my itunes entirely inaccesible, now i have bitten the bullet and gone to 11, be smart and don't fall for it, if its too good to be true (ie free os) theres often some catch related to self interest brewing behind the scenes. theres such a headache involved with downgrading an os so really don't jump in, osx 11 is right around the corner, the new features are easy to overlook, my pc does run cooler but i lost the last version of itunes i enjoy operating and the piece of mind that it was my computer to do with it what a choose. like come on you got rid of front row and coverflow, weren't they the two big things innovated for osx in recent times that really made the mac feel less like a computer and more like a personal experience? oh thats right, money to be made. excuse me but when innovation was a regular thing for your company the focus was never on "what features can we steal from the next osx to make our customers buy more activity specific products?" before you are the sinking ship merely being pointed in the right direction realise what made you great and don't stop, not the weight or the thinness, it's the usability and the personification

Is it normal, that the RAM is fully occupied under Mavericks?

I noticed this two weeks ago, when my iMac got slower than usally.

Mavericks memory management is a dramatic departure from memory management in previous versions of OS X. Mavericks will strive to keep the memory fully occupied and make room for applications to run by compressing the contents of RAM rather than writing to and from swapfiles on the hard drive. The only statistic that is of much meaning to 99% of Mavericsk users is Activity Monitor's "Memory Pressure". If the "memory Pressure" bar is GREEN you are good to go. YELLOW indicates that it may be paging to the HD more than than optimum and you probably should consider more RAM. RED indicates you are paging heavily to the HD and you definitely need more RAM or to close some open apps.
Many have found their RAM needs are less with Mavericks than with Mountain Lion or Lion because of the superior memory management. Slowdowns under Mavericks are very often the result of out of date applications and utilities. The freeware utility Etrecheck has been usefull in identifying suspect applications. If you don't feel competent to interpret what it reports, post the report back here and someone will be able to help. In my case it turned out I had three or four out of date extensions and an antivirus appication that was slowing things down. Once those were removed/replaced everything was quickly back to normal.

This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks). So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports). So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks? Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format. Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.

How do you print comments in pages under mavericks? Earlier if show comments was checked, all the comments were visible and could be easily printed. Now only those comments are visible on which the cursor is pointed but even those do not get printed!

Thanks to all for to the 'older Pages' suggestion. I don't have the last Pages on my mac anymore (although this is probably just me being really, really dumb), but the suggestion inspired me to try another very similar work around - which was also successful. Just in case anyone's in the same situation as me, am sharing it here!
For absurd reasons I won't bother to explain, I've also got a version of Word for Mac. I prefer writing on Pages, though, so all my documents (and their comments...) are Pages files. In the really unlikely event that you've also ended up with both Pages and Word (I know...) just export to a .docx file, open it with Word, and print from there. It retains all comments, track chages, etc. This seems really obvious, but I hadn't thought of it...
This can also be a work around for the lack of 'Compare Documents' and/or 'Merge Documents'.
Of course this would all be much better if it were actually just in Pages...I hope this helps, and thanks!

Multi-display windows under Mavericks

Under 10.6.8, it has been my habit (and pleasure) to open very wide terminal windows across as many as three displays in order to see the results of somewhat wide database queries without text wrapping, which affects readability and cuts the number of lines visible on the display window at once.
Under 10.9.3, when I adjust a window over towards another display so that the window would be on both displays, the window is "ghosted" until I let go of the drag bar, and if the move has not fully adjusted the window to land entirely on the display it is moving into, that half of the window promptly disappears.
Am I missing something about window positioning under Mavericks? Or, is there any way to regain the previous, multi-display-friendly window handling in Mavericks?
