IMovie will control camera, but no video displays in window

If any body has any ideas, I've used my Canon DV camera Elura 65 many, many times before with no problem importing video to iMovie. Now when I connect my camera, it still says camera connected, I can control the camera with the iMovie controls(fast forward, play etc.) but when I do push play, the time code disappears and no video is shown in the viewing window of iMovie. No sound comes out either. If anybody has any clue of what could be wrong, let me know, I would be much appreciative.

HI Ryan:
Welcome to the discussion!
OOOhhhh! This is my favorite question..because the answer is hard to believe-
*Launch Garageband
*Play a note or two
*Close Garageband
*Re-launch iMovie
Now it will work..no kidding.

  • IMovie 5.0.2 sees and controls camera but won't display video or sound

OK, my camera used to work with my iMac G4 800 just fine, it's a JVC GR-DVF11U back from the stone age (heh but I am having trouble getting any video or audio on my PB 12" G4 with iMovie 5.02. iMovie will control the camera (play, stop, ff, review) just fine but all I get is a blue screen. I tried a friends (modern) Sony (not sure of the model #)and had the same results so I think it's a problem with iMovie, not the cameras. Anyway, any help ya'll could give would be great Thanks

    Welcome to discussions!
First-if your mac can control the camera but not see the video,
    *Open Garageband
    *Play a note or two
    *Close Garageband
    *Open iMovie
    The camera will work now-REALLY!!

  • IMovie can control camera, but doesn't import the movie.

I have a Canon ZR500 plugged directly into my iMac using DV/Firewire.
iMovie goes through all the correct steps to import my movie off of the camera - I can play, pause, RW, FF, etc. all through iMovie, but when I click the import button in iMovie I just get a blue screen with a timer. The timer counts down but no movie is imported.
I've repaired permissions and tried 2 different cables and nothing helps.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same issues as you described as well. I am using a Cannon HD20 with the playback set for HDV, with imovie HD ( iLife 06) set up for video HD 1080i. I am able to control the camera from from the imovie screen however when it comes to either play or import the camera responds with the commands but I only see a blue screen on the mac. I uploaded today to Leopard thinking perhaps that might help and to no avail. I am extremely frustrated I hope someone has an idea what to try next.

  • Can control camera with iMovie, but no video displayed

    Sony HDV 1080i camera w/iMovie HD 6.0.
I can control the playback via iMovie & video plays on camera, but iMovie window just displays "camera connected". No video.
    Ideas?

Open the Audio MIDI Setup application (Utilities folder).
Try changing the settings to 44100Hz (CD Quality) or to 48000Hz (typical of the iMovie formats).
Others call this the GarageBand fix. Opening GB also resets the Audio MIDI Setup.”
If that is too hard to understand:
    *Open GarageBand
    *Play a few notes
    *Close Garageband
    *Open imovie
    *Camera should be recognized now.

  • IMovieHD controls Sony camera, but no video/audio on Mac!

Yup! I can Play, FFW, RWD the tape on my camera by clicking on the control buttons within the iMovie HD interface, the camera will show the video and play audio, but the monitor will remain blue on my Mac. Clicking on Import does absolutely nothing. If later I go to check the Media folder inside the 'My Great Movie' package, it will contain 243 (yes, always 243) Zero KB .dv files.
I installed iMovie HD on my B/W G3 using Pacifist, and was able to import my tapes onto the hard disk. So, it's not the camera or cable. Is it my Powerbook, or is it the iMovie HD installation on it that is at fault? And, more importantly, how do I go about fixing it?
    The G3 is running 10.4.2.
    Many thanks, people.

    Hi Alex:
If you still do not have this fixed-do the following:
First-if your camera can control the camera but not see the video,
    *Open Garageband
    *Play a note or two
    *Close Garageband
    *Open iMovie
The camera will work now-REALLY!! (It resets your Audio-Midi)

  • Al Jazeera in English will run audio, but won't display video. Page tells me I need a missing plug-in, but when I look, it says there aren't any.

I get the warning "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page." When I click the "Install Missing Plugins..." button, it says: "Conclusion: No suitable plugins were found."
At first, when I started the video player on this page, it would play the audio for a bit (no video) and then crash FF. I disabled the Silverlight plugin, and reinstalled Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave. Now the page doesn't crash, but I still only get audio, no video.

Hi - I tried the tip above but easier. If you right click on the flash player (or two finger click I guess in mac speak) you will see a settings box.
"To make the video display without crashing Firefox, I had to do what georgek above did: disable hardware acceleration in Flash. However, I couldn't do it in the Flash window on the Al Jazeera web page. Everytime I right clicked and selected Settings, the settings dialogue box was grayed out and I couldn't make any changes. "
Same for all of us - but only - strangely - on Al Jazeera's page. In my Facebook account, where one of my games are that use the Flash player also (TikiResort) it is not grayed out and I was able to deselect it. When I went back to Al Jazeera I looked again - and voila! Deselected and AlJE is playing.
The other post suggested something more complex about going to Macromedia's site and doing the same thing - but it seems to me any other instance of Flash player will do.

  • The log & capture window has become disabled...can control cam, but no vid.

I have been capturing 24p footage from the DVX100a and the log & capture feature has been working fine, until after the print to video feature was used. Now the device control works, but it will only display color bars. I have checked and rechecked the audio/video settings, as well as user preferences. Am I missing something simple?

    ? Am I missing something simple? < </div>
Probably but it's impossible to tell from here. Search the forum for your camera model and for preview disabled. We get at least one post a day on these topics. I don't follow the threads, I just see them all the time.
Try shutting down your system, disconnect the FW stuff, restart. Usually resets the FW bus. But there are many cameras out there now that tend to drop in and out of the preview window.

  • Safari 4.0.3 Starts but won't display any windows properly

Since accepting the update to Safari 4.0.3 this morning, Safari starts but will not display any windows, just the main application menu bar.
Trying new window has no effect and launching a history item either has no effect or safari crashes complaining that the crash could have had something to do with
    libcooliris.dylib
I therefore removed /Library/InputManagers/Cooliris but this made no difference.
History flow displays but won't launch any windows and strangely Menu>History>Home opens a window but there are no tabs nor URL nor search bar, but there is only the history bar. The window is all grey including where the page should be.
Trying to open other history items in this window changes the title, but no page contents are displayed.
I also tried reinstalling 4.0.3. from the Apple website, but this made no difference.
Have you any idea what I could try next?
    Thanks

Deleted all from /Library/InputManagers and problem solved.

  • IMovie will not import - but says it is importing

When I try an automatic import with iMovie, it finished in about 3 seconds and nothing happens (There is about an hour's worth of video on the tape). When I do a manual import, a blue screen appears which says "Importing" but no photo clips display and the timer on the top right corner stays at zero. What is going on? It sees my camera (JVC Mini DV3) but I cannot seem to do anything with the video on the camera. If I click stop or close the movie is nowhere to be found. If I quit iMovie, it does not prompt me to save anything (obviously, because nothing imported). Any idea what is going on? Help! Thanks in advance.

It finally worked on about the 12th time! I did have to hit play first, then Import, and although I tried this previously it finally worked this time. Hopefully it is not so tempermental in the future!

  • Imovie will not import the whole video, only a portion. How can I import the entire video?

I am new Imovie user and I am having some difficulty importing video from my desktop. The whole video is on my desktop, but when I try to import it in imovie, only a few minutes of the video imports. How can I fix this issue?

    Hi
    A. How much free space is there on Your - Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard disk ?
The movie in Your Camera / Stored on Your Mac (from Camera) - is very Compressed.
For iMovie (or FinalCut) it has to be in an Editable format - and this is massively LARGER
I've movies on 500Mb when un-folder are 50Gb or even more.
    B. Is there other external Hard Disks connected ?
How are it / they formatted - HAS TO BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) to work for VIDEO
UNIX / DOS / FAT32 / Mac OS Exchange - Works for most other things but not for VIDEO

  • Imovie will transcode AVCHD but not FCP

I can't get my head around this. My FCP 6.0.6 wont successfully transcode the footage from my panasonic HMC 150 camera. All I get is a grey screen in the window. However I can import my footage through Imovie and then import over to FCP. That just seems so wrong. I have to use the simpleton Imovie to do what my professional editing software won't. I have uninstalled and re-installed FCP and still nothing. Just doesn't make sense. The only downside to this method is that it is transcoded with the Apple Intermediate Codec. Is that substantially worse than Pro Res?

YOu have a G5 right? The only option for importing AVCHD into FCPs PROFESSIONAL software is the ProRes option. But the G5 cannot handle the conversion to that format. Too complex for it's processors. ONly Intel Macs can do this. iMovie imports to the CONSUMER level Apple Intermediate codec....where the conversion is easy.
Hmm....Log and Transfer prefs in FCP have the AIC option...try choosing that and see if FCP will import.

  • IMovie will not load avi/wmv videos, leaves sound out of mpg/mpeg videos

When i load mpg and mpeg videos into iMovie, the videos come out fine, but leave the sound out for some reason. There is no sound clip that is loaded with it. And when it comes to loading "avi" videos, it loads them, but they are blank. It loads a black video clip with no sound. And when it comes to downloading "wmv" videos it stops and says there was an error. This is the message it sends me. "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Volumes/Maxtor Extra Storage/WTC VIDEOS/WMV/911.wtc.2.no.base.smoke.wmv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048".
If you know anything about this, have an answer, or even a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate a response from you. My computer model is a Mac OSX 10.0 and I currently have iLife 06 with iMovie HD. Thanks a lot.

    Hello Mike,
MPEG video has muxed audio streams, which iMovie doesn't like - you'll have to convert.
Find some more info in Dan Slagle's Unofficial iMovie FAQ:
    1. Can't hear audio in iMovie when I import an MPEG clip
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6030.shtml
    2. Using Mpeg (DVD) footage
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6010.shtml
and also on Matti Haveri's website: How can I edit MPEG or convert DVD or MPEG to DV

    MPEG StreamClip:

    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack:

AVI is a container (like Quicktime's .mov) and contain various codecs. In order to know how to convert, you'll need to find out what exact codec has been used. A possibility is that it's one of the numerous DivX codecs.
FFmpegX converts various AVI and DivX file types:

WMV files can be played with Flip4Mac, in order to convert them you'll need to get the $$ pro-version ....

    hope this helps
