IMovie will not load avi/wmv videos, leaves sound out of mpg/mpeg videos

When i load mpg and mpeg videos into iMovie, the videos come out fine, but leave the sound out for some reason. There is no sound clip that is loaded with it. And when it comes to loading "avi" videos, it loads them, but they are blank. It loads a black video clip with no sound. And when it comes to downloading "wmv" videos it stops and says there was an error. This is the message it sends me. "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Volumes/Maxtor Extra Storage/WTC VIDEOS/WMV/911.wtc.2.no.base.smoke.wmv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048".
If you know anything about this, have an answer, or even a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate a response from you. My computer model is a Mac OSX 10.0 and I currently have iLife 06 with iMovie HD. Thanks a lot.
Mike

Hello Mike,
MPEG video has muxed audio streams, which iMovie doesn't like - you'll have to convert.
Find some more info in Dan Slagle's Unofficial iMovie FAQ:
1. Can't hear audio in iMovie when I import an MPEG clip
http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6030.shtml
2. Using Mpeg (DVD) footage
http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6010.shtml
and also on Matti Haveri's website: How can I edit MPEG or convert DVD or MPEG to DV
http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convertMPEG
Tools:
MPEG StreamClip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
Apple MPEG2 PlayBack:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
AVI is a container (like Quicktime's .mov) and contain various codecs. In order to know how to convert, you'll need to find out what exact codec has been used. A possibility is that it's one of the numerous DivX codecs.
FFmpegX converts various AVI and DivX file types:
http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
WMV files can be played with Flip4Mac, in order to convert them you'll need to get the $$ pro-version ....

hope this helps

  • Firefox will not load any flash video, on any website.

Hello, just recently firefox decided to stop loading flash video.
    Eg. Youtube, metacafe, etc.
I tired uninstalling flash and reinstalling it, uninstalling firefox and reinstalling it, ive also tried scanning for viruses, and nothing has worked. Sometimes it will load the advertisement for youtube videos but thats it, after that it just stays black and the controls for the player still work as normal, but there is no video or audio.
I've tried to install a different browser to see if that would make a difference and it did, i can view flash videos on chrome but the moment i go back to firefox, videos dont work anymore.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • ATV will see homeshare but will not load and play video.

ATV2 will see and connect to my homeshare library but when I try to watch anything (Movie, TV Show, etc) it shows the loading animation for about 5 minutes and then says that an error has occurred. It was all working two days ago but stopped working when we had a power outage. I have tried resetting the computer, the ATV2, and the router. I have also tried restoring the ATV2. Nothing works. Again, it will allow me to select a video to watch but will try to load and fail.
    ATV2- up to date.
    iTunes- up to date.
    iMac- up to date.
    No Firewall.
I am not sure what else to do here guys... I have tried literally EVERYTHING that I have found in these support topics and everything that I could think of to get this to work again. I also have an ATV3 in the other room and it is working fine. I know it is NOT a bandwidth issue because everything was working just fine until the power outage 2 days ago which lasted only about 2 seconds..
    Any suggestions?
About ready to drop-kick this thing and go get a new ATV3 from the Apple Store...
    HELP?!
Mahalo (Thanks) for any help you can give!
    Steve.

I am sorry to see that no one replied to this issue.  has it been resolved?  Unfortunately not for me.  I am having the same problem.  Interestingly enough I can play music files from my homesharing iTunes library but I cannot play any video content - including music video.
APT2 Loads content (take at least 3 min.)
Indicates that the movie is there
    I click play or select
    The gear starts spinning
5 minutes later I get the error message: An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later.
I have not changed anything in the house regarding computers or routers - other than updating Apple TV 2

  • Imovie will not import the whole video, only a portion. How can I import the entire video?

I am new Imovie user and I am having some difficulty importing video from my desktop. The whole video is on my desktop, but when I try to import it in imovie, only a few minutes of the video imports. How can I fix this issue?

    Hi
    A. How much free space is there on Your - Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard disk ?
The movie in Your Camera / Stored on Your Mac (from Camera) - is very Compressed.
For iMovie (or FinalCut) it has to be in an Editable format - and this is massively LARGER
I've movies on 500Mb when un-folder are 50Gb or even more.
    B. Is there other external Hard Disks connected ?
How are it / they formatted - HAS TO BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) to work for VIDEO
UNIX / DOS / FAT32 / Mac OS Exchange - Works for most other things but not for VIDEO
    Yours Bengt W

  • Imovie will not load correctly

    Hi
imovie 11 was playing well until a few days ago. Now, when it loads, only the tabs load. The screen remains as my desktop. I can go to a tab, such as edit, and create a new movie clip, and then I will see imovie appear out of the top right corner of my screen. However, when I go to create a clip, for example, imovie appears to close into the top right corner of the screen again, with only the tabs remaining. I can hear the clip audio playing, but cannot see anything other than my desktop. No matter what I do, I cannot get the image on the screen.
    Ideas?
    Thanks!

How did you accomplish the move? Is this a new drive for the same computer? Is this on a different computer? Are there two drives in the same computer? Need more information

  • Encore 2.0 will not load all my video

I am a novice Encore user. I am trying to load about 3 gig of video clips in about 80 files. The files are HDD camcorder files and I have been loading the same file type for months without any problems, however not yet this many. After about 2/3 of the way through importing the dialog box stops at about 80% of the current file and does nothing. I am able to cancel the import.
None of the files are corrupt, and I get the same error no matter what order I load the files, or how many at a time. I have tried the following.
Loading into a black project, various restarts with msconfig on minimal settings, rebuilding the preferences.
My system has 30 gig free and there seems to be plenty of free memory. I am hoping I am missing something simple here.
(running on a laptop 2.1 GHz pentium with 1 gig ram)
    Anybody have any ideas, Thanks

Not sure if this is the same problem that I have had, see under 'Admin Rights'. I have had a pproblem with m2v files, they import if logged in as a user with full administrator rights on the PC but if logged in as a 'Standard user' the file fails to import. I am trying to get some technical support from Adobe but am so far not impressed!

  • HT1338 iMovie will not load photos from iPhoto, how do I fix this?

I am using a brand new MacBook Pro, have read other comments about this problem but found no solution.  What's up with this issue?  I want to make a slide show using iMovie, like I've done dozens of times with my older macs, am having NO luck with this new iMovie.  Paid a lot of $ for this new computer, what's the deal Apple?

I noticed you have a viewer plugin from that site. Could you check whether it is set to "click to play"? If so, you could try having it always activated.
Open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Musicnotes Viewer" and if it says "Ask to Activate", change it to "Always Activate". Then return to the site and reload to see whether it works.
While you are on the Add-ons page... I noticed you have an extension named Media Watch that many users consider unwanted software or even a virus.
On the Add-ons page, if you click Extensions in the left column, can you find Media Watch remove it?
If the Remove button is missing, you probably need to remove some software using the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to bring the most recent additions to the top. This typically will reveal that a bundle of (undisclosed) programs was installed along with something you actually wanted. Remove as much as possible here.
Then you can supplement your regular security software with the scanners/cleaners listed in this support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].

  • Mail will not load in mavericks - been pulling hair out for about a day

Can anyone help with a point by point solution. Sure do miss Steve these Days, I dont think this would have happened under his watch.

I have the same problem with both my home and work connections. Mail App does not connect. Mailbox pinwheels and turns into the alert triangle.
I don't think this is not a firewall issue, I have been into both my work and home firewall settings for both connections and my MacBook personal firewall is off. No other software like peer guardian, etc.
This problem began about a week ago. Even from my iPad mail seems sluggish.
Web based .me services seem fine.

    Hello.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

  • Imovie will not let me load a movie to You Tube error message say wrong user name and password when it is right

imovie will not let me load a movie to You Tube. The error message from imovie says it is the wrong password and user name. I rechecked it and it is right.

It can be tricky sometimes.  Go to your youtube account in Safari and try logging in.  They might have changed the security requirements.  In addition, you might find this software easier to use for uploading video to youtube.

  • My macbook will not load online videos

My macbook will not load online videos such as youtube or CNN. the videos will just be a black screen and will not load. i have tried using different browsers and also have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe. what else could it be? Thanks

If you can't install or update Flash, follow these instructions.
If you have installed the latest version of Flash, please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 8. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
You might have to log out or restart the computer before a Flash update takes effect.
    Step 2
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data...
and confirm. Close the window. Then select
               ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.
    Step 3
If you're only having trouble with YouTube videos, log in to YouTube and load this page. You may see a link with the text "Leave the HTML5 Trial." If so, click that link.
    Step 4
    a. If you get a warning of a "blocked" or "outdated" plug-in, then select the Security tab in the Safari preferences window. In the list of plugins on the left, there should be one—and only one—entry for "Adobe Flash Player," showing the same version number that you installed. Select that entry. On the right there will be a list of websites for which you have specifically allowed Flash, if any. It's normal for the list to be empty. Below that is a menu labeled
              When visiting other websites
From that menu, select either Allow or Ask.
    b. If you still get the alerts, then go back to the Flash Player preference pane and select the Advanced tab. Click Check Now. Quit and relaunch the browser.
    c. If the alerts still persist, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources
Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it, there should be a file named "XProtect.meta.plist". If that file is missing and you know why it's missing, restore it from a backup or copy it from another Mac running the same version of OS X. Otherwise, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
In the Safari preferences window, select the Advanced tab and uncheck the box marked
              Stop plug-ins to save power
    Step 6
Open this folder as in Step 4:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:
              Flash Player (failing).plugin
You may be prompted for your login password.
    Step 7
Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from the domain "get.adobe.com". Don't click a link from any other website, including this one, because you can't trust links. They may be an attempt to trick you into installing malware masquerading as Flash. Type the address into the browser window. Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    Step 8
If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked
              Allow (or Enable) plug-ins
    Then click the button marked
              Manage Website Settings...
if present and make sure that the website is not blocked for Flash.
    Step 9
    Select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.

  • IMovie will NOT let me add any video!  Help!

I just need to edit an avi, and iMovie will NOT allow me to add any video footage any way I attempt to.

What is going on with this program??
The ONLY footage I've been able to add is when it pops up my laptop's camera and I capture that way. I've got the file on my computer already.
    Somebody please help me.

I just need to edit an avi, and iMovie will NOT allow me to add any video footage any way I attempt to... It says drag media here-- won't let me... I use import movie from file-- it says it's doing it, but it doesn't... What is going on with this program??
iMovie '08 will only allow you to to import files containing compression formats that can be edited. If you AVI file won't import, it likely means that the audio and/or video data is not editable. To import it, you will have to first convert it to any of the acceptable compression formats. For video this means DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264. For audio this may include DV, AIFF, AAC, Unsigned Integer, Uncompressed, etc. This means that files with adaptive PCM (ADPCM) -- a very common AVI audio compression format for digital cameras -- will not import.
The ONLY footage I've been able to add is when it pops up my laptop's camera and I capture that way. I've got the file on my computer already.
Files imported directly from a video camcorder is automatically converted to "edit" compatible compression formats using non-QT routines built into the iMovie '08 application. Files already on your hard drive are brought in (imported) via the Finder and as such, bypass the special camcorder routines since the application assumes you will only import files that are edit compatible "natively" -- i.e., are in the compression format in which you actually want to do your editing. (For example, a person who wants to edit in DV would likely be upset if the application switched to M-JPEG or MPEG-4 editing behind the user's back for some reason.)
