IMovie won't finish importing my tape; help!

I'm having trouble importing footage from a Panasonic PV-GS120 to my iMac. iMovie rewinds and imports about 2 minutes worth of tape, then stops, generates thumbnails and calls it a day. I still have 15 minutes more footage, and am going nuts. Any ideas?
TIA,
laurahead

I'm having a similar problem. I'm trying to import from my camcorder, and it appears to import everything, but then it only spends about a minute processing the video, and then when I go look at the clips, only the first couple of minutes have been imported. I can't figure it out.

  • IMovie clip length when importing from tape

Having used iMove HD without any problems and up until now have imported video into an eMac, I know but it works, then copied the DV files to my new Macbook Pro laptop for editing.
Now I have the firewire adaptor for this MacBook Pro I have successfully imported a tape into iMovie 10 but now am completely stuck.
Each clip is one second long (5 minutes with iMovieHD and adjustable) and I can't do anything with the whole import.
If I select more than on clip any export function is unavailable. Thought I would export all the clips as one file then re-import as a work a round.
There is also no timeline for editing. The screen shows all the one second 733 clips (12 minutes).
Lastly, I have no problem editing video imported as a digital file, i.e. DV
I may be missing something, but its certainly not intuitive.
    What's wrong?

    Hi
    Help - No I've not got iMovie'13 v.10
    But a thought.
I would bring in iMovie HD6 (if you got that one - iMovie HD5 doesn't work) into Your New Mac - as it is 100% DV friendly.

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, iMovie 7.1.4 and Sony tapes - help...

So I have about an eight year-old Sony TRV 330 camcorder and am desperate to transfer old tapes to iMac - got rid of old Windows Vista to get an iMac that'd make this possible. Hooked it up numerous times (firewire/IEEE 1394, camera) opened iMovie 08 and nothing - it actually always defaults to built-in iChat camera. Read up on line and it was recommended to try using iMovie 06 to transfer footage, then to export to iMovie 08. Downloaded 06, still the same. Procured Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, hooked up firewire, nothing - not even iChat camera popped up in capture screen, although I noticed audio input channels were moving with the present audio in the room.
What am I missing? From what I've read, this is not an impossible task. How come my computer(s) do not seem to be able to even detect the camera? The obvious answer is there is something wrong with firewire and/or camera, but I know both work because I tried them on the very old laptop of a friend of mine (which she got rid of days ago) and all I did was plug it all in and footage started playing on iMovie capture screen.
I can't tell you how much this is needed. Thanks so much in advance.
    Jay

After reading this in earnest, I realized this is what I've been doing all along, Miller. End result always the same.
    There is a prompt:
"Unable to locate the following external devices:
    Apple FireWire NTSC (720X480)
Your system configuration may have changed, or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.
Please check your connections and click "Check Again," or click "Continue" to set external device to None."
What am I missing? Again, I know firewire works, as does camera. Again, when in Log and Capture, it always defaults to iChat, which I cannot seem to disable and, even so, the computer doesn't seem to be recognizing the camera. Again, I understand the camera is not technically compatible and well, outdated, but again, others seem to have had much success with the same mix of iMac, camera model and FCP.
I am thinking, even with a brand-new HD camera, it will still default to the bloody built-in iChat camera.
Still desperate. Sadly, I am poor and my livelihood depends on this.
Wide open to any and all ideas, variations. There may even be one I haven't tried.
    Thanks so much in advance.

  • IMovie Won't Auto Import from iPhoto

    Hi Everyone,
My iMovie has had no problem importing most of the movies in iPhoto (all of which were captured with the computer's built in iSight)... except this one movie!
I used the QT inspector and these are the stats:
    Format: Apple MPEG4 Decompressor, 640 x 480, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 11.30
    Data Size: 380.73 MB
    Data Range: 1754.42 kbits/s
    Normal Size: 640 x 480 pixels
Any reason why this isn't working? And is there a solution that doesn't require QT Pro? If so, I would love step-by-step instructions (I'm computer literate except when it comes to converting files/audio). Thanks so much!

    What is the MPEG Streamclip?
It is a free utility that bridges the gap between multiplexed and QT content, as well as, a mini-editor and converter in much the same manner as QT Pro. Basically it accesses the QT structure now embedded in OS X and adds a few other useful features like cropping & centering; adjusting volume levels, contrast, brightness, saturation; blending frames when reducing frame rate; an advanced scaler; batch processing; etc. In addition, it will convert MPEG-1 content to QT compression formats while retaining audio and will do the same for MPEG-2 content if the QT MPEG-2 Playback component is installed. In fact, it will access all QT compenents including those from third-party providers. And, while it does not handle the layering capabilities of QT Pro, it does, IMHO, complement the capabilities of QT Pro and is a valuable asset for the general video enthusiast.
Where do I find that to do the "Save As..." Option?
The application is available for both Mac and Windows platforms at the SQUARED 5 web site. The "Save As..." option is found under its File menu.
Also what do you mean to save it as a MP4 container? Does that mean just changing the .mov to .mp4?
No. MOV (like AVI) is a generic file container. It can hold anything from H.264/AAC to DV to WMV 9 content. An MP4 container is more restrictive in that it can only contain MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC compressed format. (I.e. M4V is even more restrictive since it holds H.264/AAC exclussively.) In any case, each file container has specific and/or different characteristics. For instance, both the MP4 and M4V containers can be associated with an "external" graphic often used as a "poster" frame by QT applications like iTunes as "Artwork." Since "Tween" tracks are often used to create such things such as "transitions" in an MPEG4/AAC slideshow created by iPhoto, the MPEG4/AAC content is placed in an MOV file container along with the "Tween" track which created the transition. By using the "Save As..." option in MPEG Streamclip, you can extract the MPEG-4 and AAC content from the MOV file container and place it in a "real" MP4 file container and the "Tween" track is stripped from the file during the process. The problem with simply changing an extension from MOV to MP4 (or deleting it altogether) is that it doesn't really change the container at all and since QT actually looks at the content and not just the extension, QT would consider the name change as superficial and would continue to process the file as MOV file rather than an MP4 file.

  • Imovie '09 won't import '08 files HELP!

I imported all my camera contents into iMovie '08 and all worked well. Later, my hard drive crashed so I upgraded to iMovie '09 with the new hard drive. My iMovies files were retrieved from an external hard drive backup. When I try to import the new files, IMovie '09 will not read them--it's like the files are empty (but they really aren't). Some are .mov files, some .dv files. Any suggestions?

Hi Suzq - don't want to alarm you, but are you aware of the following when importing video from iMovie HD projects:
Only the source video is imported; any additions or changes you’ve made to the video in your project are not imported. When you import video from iMovie HD projects:
    ● All clips from the clip viewer are added to a new Event.
    ● All clips from the timeline are added to a new project.
    ● Any clip that was dragged into the project from the Finder is not added to the new project.
    ● All transitions are replaced by cross-dissolve transitions.
    ● No titles or effects that were applied to the video are transferred to the new project.
    ● No music is transferred to the new project.
    ● Any clip that was dragged into the project from the Finder is not imported; only video clips that were imported from a camcorder into the original iMovie HD project are imported to the new project.
The above was extracted from iMovie '09's Help topic "Importing video from iMovie HD projects".

  • IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
    In case it helps:
    - I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
    - QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
    - VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.

  • HELP--Problem iMovie 11 quitting in import

Hello---I've created a few DVDs using iMovie and then iDVD.  This time I'm having all kinds of problems.   iMovie keeps crashing during import, or won't import, or freezes import.  I've searched for solutions online and in other apple support threads, and one of the things advised is to delete the iMovie preferences file--but I can't even find it on my computer, even when I do a search!  The file is supposed to be called:  com.apple.iMovieApp.plist  ... however it doesn't show up at all.   HELP--I'M ON A VERY TIGHT DEADLINE.  I'm running Mac OS X Lion Version 10.7.5  and have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro machine

Are you using a camera that shoots in AVCHD?  If so that is because it is compressed on the camera, when imported it is uncompressed on the computer.
That is why you make a backup of the footage from the camera, to save space.

  • Best Way to Import VCR tapes to iMovie

    Hello, all.
I have a small problem that I hope somebody can help me with: I currently have an ADS Pyro A/V unit. I was told my the local Apple dealer that would be the best way to import VHS tapes into iMovie. It has worked for a few tapes, but now does nothing except give me a static-greenish-loud-high pitch sound when I try to import a tape.
I have given up on this unit!!!!!!
Can anybody recommend a decent way to import my old VHS movies to my MacBook and into iMovie??
Thanks for your time & input!

I have the same situation as the original poster (VHS tapes I want to edit and store on DVD).
    However I don't have a CamCorder.
What I do have is a PVR that I have used to capture the video and I can write that to a DVD. That gives me the base video that I can work on.
However, the files on the DVD have a .VOB file type. I have tried StreamClip but it provides me with a number of options as to the format I can import it into.
Ultimately I want to bring the image into iMovie, edit it and then burn it back onto a DVD. I don't really care if the intermediate files are large, but I am a little concerned about loosing picture quality (which is not great to start with - the original images were on recorded on Super-8 movie film, then 'projected' and recorded onto the VHS tape of which I have a copy. However it is all I have!!!)
What is the best format (and if necessary, tool) to copy the .VOB files to - something that iMovie can use without conversion preferrable - and then write back to a DVD.
    Thanks
    Susan
(PS in case you haven't gathered, I'm new to all this side of things, but I have time and a strong desire to learn!)

  • Help! i'm trying to add multiple titles to my movie, but imovie won't let me

i'm trying to use titles to add supers to my mini commercial. this is what i've done so far: imported video. added sound effects. added a product photo at end of clip. added a title over first four seconds of clip. now, i want to add additional titles at intervals throughout the 22 second film. it won't let me. am i doing something wrong?

I had the same problem, cos sometimes imovie won't let you add more titles when you try to take them straight from the title menu. I happened to me mostly when the clip itself is quite short. While imovie won't let you overlay several titles, you surely can have several titles, one after the other, in your project. To do this, I used a little trick: Add some small clip to the end of your project. Doesn't matter what, you're gonna delete it again anyway. You can then add another title to this additional clip. Then you just drag this title from there to your actual clip and place it where you want it. And then you do the next one(s) the same way until you have all your titles where you want them. At the end you just delete the "helping" clip again. It might be a bit complicated way of doing things, but it worked for me.

Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

I am having problems using mov files imported into a project. I get the message "Not rendered" in the Canvas and clip won't play. Can anyone help?

When clips won't play without rendering in the Timeline, it usually means that the clip's specs don't match the Sequence settings.
A .mov file could be made from any number of codecs; the QuickTime Movie designation is merely a container for video files of all kinds.  Since FCE only works with the QuickTime DV codec and the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) natively, if your mov files aren't one of those two, you need to convert them PRIOR to importing into your FCE project.

  • IMovie won't let me import images!

    Hi-
I've got an extremely old version of iMovie (2.1.2)
From some reason, when I try to import any kind of image (jpg, gif), iMovie won't let me
The jpg file is greyed out when I try to import. I've tried changing the import options to Jpeg file, all importable files, etc. Nothing will let me import.

I don't suppose there's a way to upgrade to iMovie 3 without paying?
No. But, you may be able to find it cheaply on eBay.

  • IMovie won't import from iPhoto (this is different than all the other post)

Before you think, "Oh... this is the typical 'iMovie 7 isn't importing iPhoto movies' question" this isn't. I've looked through a ton of threads and questions trying to find something similar to this.
Q: I have all my digital camera (Canon SD500 camera (not camcorder), no known compatibility issues with Apple) movies, which are in .AVI format, in iPhoto. iMovie is being weird as in it will only import SOME of my camera movies. For some events, it imports ALL the movies in. For some events, it won't import ANY of the movies in. For some events, it will only import SOME of the movies included in it.
If someone responds, "Your camera is incompatible" OR "the file format isn't supported" they should have points deducted from their account because they didn't read anything except for the first sentence and decided I don't know what I'm talking about.
Here's some interesting things that have happened:
    1) I found ONE event in question called "Wedding Pictures & Movies" that wasn't showing up in iMovie. The camera we took movies with has other movies in other events that have successfully been imported into iMovie. But anyway, I realized that for some programming languages (I don't know if this is true with iMovie, I doubt it) that the ampersand (&) sign is used in code and shouldn't be used in titling things. So I shortened the name down to "Wedding" and all the sudden (more like after iMovie asked me if I wanted to create the thumbnails for the movies), SOME of my movies were put into iMovie, not all.
    2) Upon realizing that either: the event name was too long OR the & sign actually did screw it up, I shortened another event in question from "Reception Pictures & Videos" to simply "Reception". Upon opening iMovie, it never asked to build the thumbnail library with movies from this "Reception" event that I did the exact same thing to as the "Wedding" event.
    3) I thought I would try and force iMovie to refresh the thumbnail database (or build thumbnails for another movie again) by taking another movie with said camera above, the same one that I've taken all the other movies with, and imported the movie into iPhoto. Upon opening iMovie, it asked me to build the thumbnail, but only did so for the movie that I just took.
What could be going on that movies from the same camera aren't showing up in iMovie? I can understand other cameras, but these movies are all from the same camera. Some will show up while others will not? Does anyone have a clue what could be going on here?
BTW, the movies have not been edited in any way. They are all still in the exact same format and everything since they were imported into iPhoto.
