IMovie won't open for one user.

Hi, I recently installed the iLife 09 on my machine and all was fine.
I am now having problems opening iMovie to the extent that the icon bounces and then I get the box saying that the application has quite but nothing else is effected.
I set up a guest account on the machine and open iMovie and it was fine.
I seem to need to stop iMovie looking for the last project that was open as I guess that it has corrupted in some way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Details of the crash log are below.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi
I would delete iMovie preference file. Then iMovie makes a new and fresh one.
You find it.
Macintosh HD (boot-drive)/Users/Your Log-in account/Library/Preferences
and is named.
com.apple.iMovie.plist eventually it can be named
com.apple.iMovie7.plist or
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
When iMovie IS NOT running - move this/them out to desktop and now start iMovie.
Yours Bengt W

  • One application won't open for one user

We are doing a rollout of Macbook Pros to a group of people. We have used migration assistant for 20 computers. One application will not open for one user on each of the computers. The applicaiton will open for users that are added, but not the admin user that the application was originally installed. We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application with the same results. The one user can not log in. The permissions look right for all files.

How about clarifying some things for me? Does each machine have a different admin user? What user installed the application that won't open (you say there is only one?) How many users on each machine - one or many? How many admin users are there? How many users are Standard or Managed users? What user "can not log in?" Is this on one machine or all machines? Which is the application that won't open, where is it installed, what are the permissions for the application, what are the permissions for the folder in which it's installed?
Are these computers on a network or operating standalone or does each person in the group have their own separate machine?
From where did you migrate for these 20 computers and why did you use Migration Assistant? MA is not the correct tool for doing a multi-system configuration. This is usually done using a net-based installation from a machine running OS X Server or from an XServe or by creating a standard system DVD and installing via ASR.

  • Safari won't open for one user but does for other

I have 2 users on my mac. Out of nowhere, the Safari application will not open when I am logged in but works fine with my other user (where I am currently writing from). When I'm logged in, it hangs but the application never opens...just the searching colored ball over the application headings at the top making have to force quit to do anything else. I have the most recent version of everything and haven't even updated or installed anything within the last week. Just stopped working. I've read many different suggestions about removing plug ins and other files from various libraries. I do not have the Leopard install disks to try re-installing as it was installed at the genius bar for me as my DVD drive does not read any install disks. I'm at a total loss. How can it work with one user and not another--it's the same computer...Thanks.

OK--So I kept searching through all the discussions for other possible solutions....each time removing some file and putting it on my desktop and trying again. Well something worked. I have the following folders now on my desktop that were removed
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > Downloads.plist
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > History.plist
Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > formvalues
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Cookies > cookies.plist
Hard drive > Library > InputManagers
Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > InputManagers
    Hard drive > Users > Your username> Library > Caches > com.apple.safari
    Hard drive > Users > Your username> Library > Caches >Metadata > Safari
The last file I dragged to the desktop was the form values folder. No idea what actually worked but it's up and running and actually moving faster than before.
Question now is do I trash all these folders I dragged out to the desktop? Or do some need to go back? Any other safari maintenance I should do now that it's open? I emptied the cache and cleared the history. Just trying to be preventative. Thanks iBod for your suggestions and I hope this helps someone else as it appears that many have had this issue.

  • Safari won't open for one user...but will for another

Hi, I have been running Safari successfully on my iMac for as long as I can remember. On Leopard 10.5.6 (because of compatibility issues I am no higher...). Anyway, yesterday Safari 'unexpectedly quit' one day and has stopped working completely. I click the icon (from either the dock or applications folder), it opens and I get a blank window and nothing else. I click and hold on the icon and see that the application is not responding.
For the purposes of troubleshooting I logged in as another user and tried Safari: boom, opened straight off. So, I tried deleting:
    1. safari.plist file
    2. Cookies folder
    3. Bookmarks
    Ummm...any other ideas anyone?

    HI,
You need to update your system software to 10.5.8 in order to run the latest version of Safari as noted here. http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ *Don't download from that link.* Go to your Apple Menu/Software Updates.
*This update may restart your Mac several times after the update. It's okay!* Just let your Mac do it's job.
After you have finished with the update, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Lightroom 3.x won't start for one user on my computer.  Works fine for all others.  Help?

I'm running Vista and LR 3.2.  I have multiple users accounts on the same computer (my family members).  Everyone is able to use LR except one user.  Whenever he trys to launch LR, he gets an error message that says:
    "Lightroom - Opening Catalog: IMG_0154.JPG.lrcat"
Directly under that is the MS Windows dialog box that says "LR 64-bit has stopped working" and to look for an online solution and close the program.
I really don't want to reinstall LR again unless I can do so without losing the catalogs from all the other users.  It would be best if we didn't lose the catalog from the user that can't start LR, too.  It's lotsa work to redo...  Help on what to do?
    -Willcy-

Don't have a clue what's happening, but workaround
should eb possible bu creating a ne catalog then importing original into
    new. Steps required:
    1. User opens their accoun on PC
    2. Hold down Alt key when launching Lightroom. A dialog should open that will allow you to switch catlogs or create a new one
    3. Choose Create New Catlog. Give it a name (e..g the Users name). and make sure that it is located within the Users account area on hard disk (same location as original is probably best).
    4. When Lr opens go to File menu and choose Import from Catalog
    5. A dialog will open. Locate the old catlog (i.e. the lrcat file) and select.
    6. Hit Choose button
    7. Lightroom will check integretity and contents of old catalog. A dialog will open. Make sure all folders are checked.
    8. Hit Import button.
    9. Close Lr when catlog import is complete.
10 Reopen Lightroom. The new catalog should open by default

  • PowerPoint file won't open under one user account, but does under another account

    Hello,
I have a 10.9.5 macbook pro here that will not open a Powerpoint file under one user account. It is up-to-date with Software updates and Office 2008 is up-to-date as well. When I try to open the PowerPoint file, I get the message, "PowerPoint closed unexpectedly" and I can choose to Reopen (which opens a blank presentation) or OK (which closes PowrPoint). I have tried double-clicking the file from the Desktop where is resides, File --> Open from within PowerPoint and also saved it to a flash drive and tried opening from there. It does open under the admin account on the same machine and it will also open on other machines. Other PowerPoint files are opening fine...it's just a problem with the one file. The user has Read & Write privilege to the file. I tried Repairing Disk Permissions, I have tried deleting microsoft plist files, and lastly, have re-installed Office 2008. At this point, I can only think to try deleting the user account and re-adding it, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I go that route.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Safari won't open for my user

Safari stopped opening after I had to crash-restart my computer today. It still works if I create a new user so I guess it's only related to something on my user. Deleting ~/Library/Safari and the other ~/Library/... stuff related to Safari(got rid of everything I could find with Safari in the name) hasn't worked. For the hey of it I reinstalled Safari from the latest mac update but that didn't work as I expected.
What else do I need to delete that'll totally refresh Safari into the state it's in on a newly created user?
    Thanks for any help.

Well I found out the update I reinstalled Safari from(the latest combo update) wasn't working because it was installing an incomplete copy of the application. My friend sent me his copy of Safari and it worked again so my issue is solved. It had to have been user-specific because Safari still worked for other users but in the process of removing my user's Safari related things I probably went too far and that's why I messed it up further. Copying his Safari into my apps folder(and fixing the accounts in its privileges) has solved my problems for that.

  • One project won't open for either user, another will open for one user only

My wife and I are new iMovie users. I have imported three projects (#1-3) from our camera, she has imported two projects (#4 & #5) - all to a shared folder. The first project I imported (#1) cannot be opened by either of us. In addition, my wife cannot open the second project that I imported (#2). We get the following error: "The project could not be opened, because the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permission are incorrect." We can both open projects #3-5.
I have checked the permissions settings on all 5 projects. All are same, Read and Write priveleges for both of us. Anybody seen this before? Am I missing something?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    1. You said the projects were all saved "to a shared folder." Do you mean THE Shared folder? Your Mac's Users folder should list two Users, plus a folder named "Shared". Is that the folder you mean?
    2. The trouble is that an iMovie project isn't actually a file. It's a special kind of folder called a package, which contains other files and folders. (To look inside the package, Control-Click on the package icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu.)
    3. When YOU are the user and you create a new iMovie project, the package and everything it contains is configured with you as the owner. You are the designated owner of all the items that comprise the project. No one else can Write to the project.
    4. To change that, you have to change the project package into a normal Finder folder, adjust its permissions and the permissions of all the contents of that folder, then change it back into an iMovie package.
    Here's how:
In the Finder, choose Finder > Preferences. Click Advanced and turn ON "Show all file extensions".
The name of your iMovie project "My Sample Project" is now displayed as "My Sample Project.iMovieProject" in the Finder.
Remove ".iMovieProject" from the project name, removing the period. When the Finder asks, say OK.
The project package has now turned into a folder. Select the folder and choose Get Info.
Set Others permissions to "Read & Write". Then click "Apply to enclosed items". When the Finder asks, say OK.
Select the folder name again and add the extension ".iMovieProject" to the name. The folder will change back to an iMovie package.
The package will now allow anyone to Read and Write to the project.

PS: This solution isn't very handy, obviously, but it does the job. A better solution is to buy an external hard drive, and configure it to Ignore permissions. (In the Get Info window for the disk.) That lets both users save projects to the drive without permission issues.

  • IPhoto won't open for other users on MacBook

I'm using a MacBook with OSX 10.9. My account purchased iPhoto some time ago, and it appears to work well in my account. Other users of the machine would like to use it too.  Unfortunately, when they attempt to open iPhoto, The App Store opens instead and the user is prompted for their Apple ID.  Not matter what Apple ID is (successfully) entered, including the one used to originally purchase this application (I think), a message dialog appears that says:
Update Unavailable with This Apple ID
This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
Switching back to my own account on this same MacBook, I can open and run iPhoto without issue.
I don't particularly want my wife's photo collection and mine to be in the same place, nor does she.

Back up all data. Delete the application and reinstall it by downloading from your Purchases list. If you have copies of any older version, delete those too.

  • Mouse won't scroll for one User but works for another

I recently updated to a new Imac and restored the computer from time machine from our old IMac which didn't have mountain lion update.  All works fine except when logged onto our Kids account the mouse wont scroll pages by sliding finger on the mouse. Tried changing in Preferences when logged on to this user to no avail. Mouse scrolls perfectly when logged on as Administrator.

Hi Mick, this is a new one on me!?
Were these Kids' account migrated from the older OS version? If so I suspect some 3rd party app that is no longer working in 10.8
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD into one of those accounts, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Also look in System Preferences' Other row.

  • Mac CS 5 Std.always closes when opening for one users profile, why?

Anyone having this issue or has in the past? If so, how was the issue resolved? A re-install or new user account created?

Might be a permissions issue on the prefs folders, but more likely it's SING, so see SING Removal

Updated to Yosemite, no problem.  now iPhoto and iMovie won't open.  Says I need to update software however, when i try to update indicates my User ID and PW won't work for these two pieces of software.  User ID and PW works everywhere else.

I am having the same problem.  I even changed my password and updated all of my security information.  Now it just gives me an error and retry message, which of course also does not work.  Went to support and was going to open a chat (seemed the simpler option) and received a message that my support has expired for this serial number unless I want to pay $29.00.  So I chose the option to call later, which was the exact time suck I was trying to avoid.  Why wouldn't the new operating system also update the apps that were already part of my old platform?

  • IMovie won't open since i got the update for Yosemite

ever since i updated the mac book pro to Yosemite - it has been slower and also iMovie won't open at all

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

You can also try running the combo update.

  • How to open multiple sessions for one user?

Sorry for the silly question but I couldn't find it googling or searching through this forum, so I started wondering whether it's possible in SQL Developer to open multiple sessions for one user. I'm fairly new to SQL Developer and databases in general.
When I open SQL Developer and connect to a schema, a worksheet opens named MYSCHEMA. If I disconnect then connect, another worksheet opens, named MYSCHEMA~1. I assumed these were different sessions, but if I enter into one worksheet:
    select col1 from my_table where row_id = 1
    -- shows result is 1
    update my_table set col1 = 0 where row_id = 1
    select col1 from my_table where row_id = 1
-- shows result is 0and then enter into the second worksheet:
    select col1 from my_table where row_id = 1
-- shows result is 0I would have expected the second worksheet to report 1 because the first worksheet did not issue a COMMIT. Thus, I'd guess both worksheets are the same session? Is that right? If so, how do I have two sessions open simultaneously (opened by same user)?
I'm trying to implement the code at the bottom of this post, for which testing requires at least two sessions:

    Thanks Jim,
Ctrl-Shift-N doesn't do anything for me. I'm on a mac -- by experimenting it looks like command-N does what you're looking for. This appears to be the same as left-clicking on the "New" icon in the top left corner of SQL Developer, or selecting from the pull-down menu, File > New.
This opens "Create a New" window that appears to be a wizard. What would I select at this point? Options are: Database Connection, Table, View, Package, ...
I don't see an option for "Worksheet".
    UPDATE:
OK, I found that if I select "SQL File", a worksheet becomes available. Perhaps this is what you intended. However, when I issue the command
select col1 from my_table where row_id = 1;it still returns 0 instead of 1. Hmm, maybe my initial assumption was wrong -- if this is a second (e.g. different) session, should I expect the changes made in the first session in SQL Developer (the UPDATE command) WITHOUT a commit, to be observed in this second session? I thought that changes made in one session were not viewable in a different session until these changes are committed in the first session? If so, how to show this in SQL Developer? I must be missing something basic here.
Or, is SQL Developer issuing some sort of "auto-commit" without my knowledge?

  • Cannot open iSync for one user

Hello ... After upgrade to 10.5.6 I can no longer open iSync for user A. For all other users iSync still opens and shows that it is the new version from 10.5.6. So the update worked, but iSync doesn't start at all for one user. I suspect that this user uses a device which is no longer supported in 10.5.6. I tried to remove the device from the list of Bluetooth devices and added it again. Didn't work.
I have followed the Apple Hint http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627 for resetting in terminal the SyncServices but it hasn't changed anything.
I reset all data via .me for this user. Didn't work.
Any other idea? I would like to remove this phone from the list of iSync devices but I don't know how because I cannot open iSync.
    Best regards
    Valentin.

Yep. That's what I did and it worked but afterwards I had to clean-up: Repairing permissions and then I reinstalled the Combo for being sure.
In hindsight, I believe it must have been related to a permissions issues - something in the 10.5.6 installation process must have changed the permissions. I did repaired the permissions before the Combo installation but not afterwards so it's difficult to prove it now. But moving the package to my desktop and then back did change the permissions to read&write for my user A.
    Thanks.
    Valentin.
