Imovie won't play or edit a project

Hi
Can someone help?  All of a sudden I can't edit a project and the preview window is just blank.  Before the cursor would drag the playhead so I could edit.  Now it's just a "hand" icon and I can't do anything.  In addition I can't preview any project there is just a black screen.  When I press play on a project the play head won't move.  Help!

Hi Robert,
You may have already tried this, but quit iMovie then re-open it. If that doesn't fix things, shutdown and reboot your Mac.
Failing that, try deleting iMovie's preference file. It's located in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences and (for iMovie '11) is named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist" (also see NOTE below).
Close iMovie then drag this file to the Trash. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh .plist file with the default settings, which you can change if desired in iMovie>Preferences in iMovie's menu.
Deleting the preference file will not harm your Events or Projects but may fix iMovie's unusual behaviour. The file can become corrupted in some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly or is Force Quit.
NOTE: For users of iMovie '09, the preference file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Earlier versions will have a similar name.

  • IMovie won't let me edit a project after update to 9.0.9

I am working on editing a concert in iMovie '11 and recently updated iMovie to version 9.0.9.  After the update installed, I tried to copy and paste a shot video clip from one project to another one, but nothing happened (by the way, this process worked fine before the update).  I went back to the project screen and a screen popped up that looks like this:
The progress bar did not move at all, it just stayed in the same place.  I tried to quit iMovie (command-Q) but that didn't work, so I force-quit it.  I then opened it again and the footage that I was trying to copy was in the project.  I decided I didn't want that clip, so I deleted it.  Guess what I got:
I relaunched iMovie again, and the clip had deleted.
    Anyone know what is wrong?
I am running iMovie on a 2008 iMac (Core 2 Duo processor, 250GB HDD, 4GB RAM) running Mountain Lion (10.8.3).

I just got off the phone with Apple.  They said it was a software-update related problem.  I restarted the computer and everything is working.

  • Video in iMovie won't play.

I have edited an entire almost 45 minute long iMovie, but when I play it, certain videos I added and edited won't play, and the screen will stay on the picture that was shown before the video. How do I fix this?

I too have this problem, includes when i add cutaways - the original video freezes and the cutaway never comes up.

  • Why won't my imovie won't play on site?

I'm wondering what could cause my imovie (Quicktime) not to play on my site. I see the play bar but it won't play. Also, how do I get it to play automatically? I read the instructions but I have my site published on a private server and also when I went to the Go menu-idisk..etc.. and called up my site's file and js (?) it said there was an error and I couldn't open it to edit. Can I edit the html in text edit and then just save the folder again?

Check your server files and make sure the movie actually uploaded; the controller could be there without the movie itself.
The html editing is basically the same, whether it's hosted on your iDisk or a remote server. In your case, navigate to the .js files for that particular page using any text editor (I like Taco, and it's free) and make the following changes to the script code that controls your movie: (you will find the movie code near the top of the page in the .js file)
    Change autoplay="false" to autoplay="true"
    Change loop="false" to loop="true"
Changing controller value="true" to controller value="false" will remove the controller from the page entirely. Make these changes in both sets of tags, (object and embed).
Make the changes and just "Save". (Now would be a good time to duplicate the modified .js file so you don't have to do this again the next time you make updates to that page.)
Now upload these changed files to your server, clear your browser cache and you should see the changes.

  • Imovie won't let me make 1080 projects

I've been using imovie for a while now and i've always been able to export in 1080. It's never been a problem before unless I had used videos from a camera that wasn't a high enough quality. I've exported movies into 1080 projects recently, but within the past week or two it won't allow me at all. I use the same (HD)camera for all of my videos and no matter what settings I change it doesn't seem to matter. Is there something specific that I should be doing to allow it to be in 1080? (not that i've changed anything i use to do) Frame rates? size? any suggestions are very appreciated!
    I have Imovie '11 9.0.9 version
    thanks!

Thanks for your response. So I can now 'open' my projects, but am still unable to add clips, etc. All of my clips are either mp4 or m4v. Now it seems as if iMovie is just not responding. I was only able to go into editing my project by renaming it, a solution that seems very surface.
    Thanks again,
    Andrea

  • IMovie Won't Play My Project? (video)

I was in the middle of making a project and when i made a little edit to my movie, iMovie froze. I closed it
and when i re-opened it, it wouldn't play my movie. The red bar stays at the very begining of the movie and the screen is blank (as shown in the photo) and space bar does not play the video. It cannot be edited any further either. When i try to play it in full screen, the whole screen goes black and doesnt load the movie. Anything in the event library works just fine. Older projects play but only the audio, no video.
    If anyone knows how to fix this bug or whatever it is, please comment and let me know. Things that didn't work;
    Restarting iMovie
    Restarting my macbook
    Mashing my keyboard ferociously
Also it is a very complex video (edit wise) and i do not want to redo it.
    THANKS! - Wes

    Hi
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • IMovie won't play my project

I finished my movie, went to export and got the "Unable to prepare project for publishing" message.
I tried closing iMovie and coming back to my project, but now it won't let me even play my project.
I've tried removing the iMovie caches and preferences. I even updated to the latest iMovie 9.0.4 version. No avail.
    Please help!

Also, I've put a Freelancer.com call out. So, if you know you can fix this and want to get some cash visit:

  • IFlip video files used in iMovie won't play on Youtube

We used some minidv video and some iFlip video clips in an iMovie project. When the project was uploaded to youtube, the iFlip (avi files) do not play. Anyone have a solution?

I too have this problem, includes when i add cutaways - the original video freezes and the cutaway never comes up.

  • Videos won't play in editing board

When I click on the individual clips in order to watch, cut and edit them...they literally will not PLAY. When I hit the "play" arrow, it switches the "pause" image as if it's playing, but the screen stays frozen. It didn't matter whether I dragged them into the scene board, or just watched them in the media area.

    Ginger,
    Welcome to the forum.
Can you please give us much more detail, such as your platform (specs. will not hurt here), the details on the Source Footage, and your Project's Preset?
This ARTICLE will give you some direction.

  • Organizer plays all my videos, PSE 9 won't play or edit any.

I have an Asus laptop with Corei5 processor, 4gb ram, 500gb HDD @ 7200rpm with plenty of contiguous space.  I believe my playback/editing problem lies in my video card.  I have an Geforce GT 32M 1GB with Nvidia Optimus technology.  This lets my laptop switch between integrated graphics on the i5 processor, and my discrete Geforce card.  It appears as if PSE 9 detects and activates my Geforce while loading up (specifically the PlayerMediaCore.prm triggers it) but then turns it off.  Once in the editor all videos will play their audio only.  I have tried to force only integrated graphics mode and discrete graphics mode.  Either way, it will not work.
I have tried quite a few formats of videos, and have the most recent Nvidia, Intel graphics, quicktime, directx, and PSE 9 updates.  PSE 7 worked fine with the same files.
    Help!

Both the player in Organizer, and also the Source Monitor, are simple players. The ability to edit the Clips depends on several other aspects, like CODEC and Project Preset - hence Steve G's question.
Good luck, and please let us know more,

  • Exported Movies From iMovie Won't Play on ATV2

I'm trying to make a DVD (more about that on another thread - iDVD ARGH!) for my kids nursery. I have 25 minutes of footage which I just want to split into two, title up and burn to disc or make available for download. The footage came from a Flip camera. If I convert to MP4 using Handbrake the entire clip plays really well on my Apple TV 2 via iTunes. If I caption or put titles on a clip and export from iMovie the content will not play on the ATV2. Anyone got any tips?

Well, tried to play the files in itunes and they don't, just sit there waiting to play but never start! The one I put back through Handbrake does play though so I have a workaround. However, I don't think I should be having to do this should I? I know iDVD is flaketastic but thought iMovie was pretty solid. Maybe some prefs that are wrong somewhere?
Edit: Just realised that I've been a bit light on detail there. Opened Handbrake, selected the file I exported from iMovie (rather than published to iTunes) and then chose the ATV2 preset, set frame rate to PAL (I know I didn't need to do this), put a HB suffix on the file, created the file and then added it to my iTunes library.

  • IMovie won't play audio

I'm making a movie, it's basically a slideshow of pictures with songs in the background. I've had no problems with it until just a few minutes ago. I tried to do something and it shut down and said it sent a report to apple. Now only two clips with songs play and the rest don't play the audio. Please help!! I need this for tomorrow and I can't re-do the entire thing!!

I would love if someone can reply to this question.
I'm having the same problem - movies used to import and show the audio waveform just fine, but now after having done about 30 projects without problems, any new import will show the spinning circle instead of the actual audio waveform, both in the project window and in the event window.
I'm guessing it's some kind of out-of-memory problem, but my computer seems to have plenty of memory & disk space available.  Is there some setting unique to iMovie's memory usage, involving stored projects, perhaps?

  • IMovie won't open any of my projects

iMovie 11 was refusing to open its Titles section for my projects, so I uninstalled and reinstalled it. Now it cannot find any of my projects, although they are located in the correct folder.

  • Won't play in edit mode

In Audition 1.5 multitrack view plays fine and all functions are usable, however when I try to edit a waveform, the stop, play, pause, play from cursor, and play looped are all greyed out and unusable. I've tried pressing the spacebar as well, but nothing happens. Also, nothing will preview in the organizer.
Nothing like this has happened to me before, and the program was working well for hours today and suddenly did this.

Check that the right Audio Driver and default output paths are selected under Edit/Audio Hardware Setup.  I believe I've seen the transport controls greyed out when Audition can't find a valid path/driver for the audio--and you have to select separately in Multirack and Edit view.
Even if you haven't knowingly changed these settings, Vista and Win7 seem to be able to do some weird things.

  • Imovie won't let me open my project nor let me into my project library

I need to do a trailer for english and I had already started the project. Then when I went to go open iMovie, it looked like this:
I tried clicking the project library but it wouldn't budge. I tried all the buttons, shutting down the app/computer, updating the software.
I looked in library-prefrence- and I couldn't find anything for the com.apple.imovie whatever
I am super stressed out and I'm about to go hulk mode on my mac

If clicking the share menu does nothing this is a known effect of having Mackeeper installed.  See: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24066271#24066271
A more recent post reports that there is an update to MacKeeper that resolves the problem.
