IMovie won't update to 9.0.8, Mac App Store tells me I have to buy?

So, the problem I am having, as alluded to by the title, is that in the "Updates section of the Mac App Store, iMovie has an update to 9.0.8 listed, but when I attempt to update to the new version, the Mac App Store tells me I need to buy it, However, iMovie came preinstalled on my 1 1/2 month old Macbook Pro with Retina Display. I don't use iMovie often, so it's not a big deal, but I do find it very annoying.

When you get a new Mac with the iLife apps preinstalled, you need to accept these apps into your Mac App Store (MAS)/iTunes Stores Apple ID. Have you done that?
Normally soon after setting up your new Mac you need to open the MAS and sign into your account. Go to the Purchased pane and acccept the three iLife apps.

You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store notice. For example, if the App Store says you need to update "Twitter," the hacked app may be "Angry Birds" or something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you have to carry out a systematic search.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
In the Finder, press the key combination command-F to open a search window, or select
    File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
    Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu initially showing Kind. From that menu, select  Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select Raw Query and click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of popup menu. Click in that box and paste (command-V).
The search window will show all the App Store products you've installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the items listed in the search window is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Test.

Hi, App Store tells me I have installed the latest Pages update, yet it will not open Pages docs created on other machines that DO have the latest version . Any tips?

    Hi
    Pages 5.0 and 10.9.
While App Store tells me there is no update avalable to Pages, which it says was installed Nov. 4, its the old Avatar/logo thingo and, as I say, it will not open the Pages docs created on my MacBook, which definiitely does have the new Pages running smoothly.
    cheers

mac app store tells me to log into <edited by host> account to update apps(that I don't own) but that is not my account and I never heard of this email. Is there a fix for this?

Everyone here - please take a look at this thread ( the last two posts by WZZZ and Thomas Reed):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15205291#15205291
It appears that a) Hotmail has 19 domains functioning as distributors for malware and b) someone is distributing pirated software. Although it does not appear to be related to the recent trojan, my suggestion: stay away from both.
Edit: so why does everyone here appear to have pirated software (and doing it through it App Store)?????

  • Updates don't appear in mac app store

Hi, I have a problem with the mac app store. I enter to it and in updates it says that I haven't updates. But I have a lot of apps to update... I had this problem time before but with the terminal and some codes I could repair. But now I can't find this method. I have a MacBook Air (13 inc, mid 2013) with Yosemite 10.10.1
I have tried this method but don't work:
Logout, close app store, open app store and loggin with my account.
    - Go to the Spotlight system preferences.
             - Go to the Privacy tab.
             - Add your boot drive ("Macintosh HD") to the privacy list and close the preferences.
             - Open the preferences again and remove your hard drive from the list.
             - Reboot the system.
         3. Try resetting the Mac App Store.
         - Enable the debug menu and restart the Mac App Store: defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
       - Choose the Reset Application option and restart the Mac App Store.
         4. Purge the Caches:
         rm -r ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
         rm -r ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.storeagent
         rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist
         rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist
         rm ~/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist
         5. Changing my region to USA and reset.
    So I need a solution...
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • IMovie '11 available alone for $15 at new Mac App Store

To get to this you have to download the new Mac OS update (10.6.6)--something oddly not mentioned on the e-mail Apple sent out alerting people of the new site. Just use Software Update and an icon is placed in the Dock (and an Application called App Store is place in the Applications folder) when you install the update.

I wish they would make iMovie 06 available in the App Store. We sometimes have to pay over $100 for iMovie 06. That's a lot of money for teachers.
Just use Software Update and an icon is placed in the Dock (and an Application called App Store is place in the Applications folder) when you install the update.
Many recommend installing updates separately as a downloadable file, this they claim makes the installation more stable for your system. I was skeptical about this procedure at first, however I've noticed that the repair permissions procedure goes much faster with fewer glitches.

  • Iphoto not opening and no update to be found on Mac App store

I recently updates my macbook pro to Yosemite and now I cannot open iPhoto. I am redirected to the Mac App Store page. Once on the Mac App Store there is no iPhoto update to be found. What the heck is going on?
    Please help.

See tthis user tip: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3
You can try just updating from Purchases first.

  • Update Photoshop Elements 9 from mac app store

    Hi!
I have been using the PSE 9 Editor from the Mac App Store for a few years. Mostly for editing RAW files from my canon DSLR.
However, I just bought a mirrorless Olympus E-PL5, and the CameraRAW that comes with PSE9 will not open the RAW files from it.
There are updates to both PSE9 and CameraRaw on the adobe website, but none of these work with the Mac App Store Version.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
    -Fred

Frankly, it's generally a bad deal to buy the app store version of PSE. Aside from the difficulties updating, you can't install anything that involves deleting mediaDatabase.db3, and once a new version of PSE is available in the app store there's no way to download older versions again. Adobe does make older versions available on their site for download, but they don't recognize your apple ID as a serial number.
EDIT and you pay a premium--you can usually find the boxed version for much less than the app store price if you shop around.

  • App store tells me I have updates available, but when I get there there are no icons

I have not updated the system it simply stopped working.

The update server is down; try this temporary workaround
    App Store>Purchased>Select "All"
Note: Look out for apps that have the word "Update"

  • HP printer updates through Mac App Store

Hello! I have a HP Photosmart 6520 printer since last week. I've done a wi-fi installation following the steps of the HP software that was with the printer. The last (and only) update has been via the touch screen of the printer itself because the Mac App Store didn't show any update. I'd like the next updates to be via the Mac App Store. How can I do? Should I re-install the printer through System Preferences > Printers and Scanners instead of through the HP software?
(Just to be clear, I'm talking about this: OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download - Apple Support)

You can get drivers directly from the manufacturer.

  • Mac app store update indicated as installed

The Mac App Store tells me there's an update available for one of my applications, however, the install button is disabled and indicates that the new version of the app is already installed. The version number of the app (About...) shows v120...., the update in the App Store shows v121, so there's something available, it seems.
How can i either download the update, or get rid of the update indication in the App Store?
    Any help will be appreciated.

Drag & drop the app into the Trash. Don't empty the Trash. Try updating the app. The MAS should now download the latest version to your Mac. If the app updates successfully, you can empty the Trash.

  • Why I lost all the apps needed to be update in the app store icon while I have not updated them yet? Please help.

I am using iPhone 4, and I had about 50 apps needed to be updated, which is stated in the App Store icon.  I have not had time to update them until today.  However, when I was ready to update all the apps, I found out that there was not any apps in the App Store icon needed to be update.  Does anyone knows why?  Please help.  Thank you very much!

This morning I had the same issue - even though I have pending updates, the app store badge is gone and it says all apps are up to date. I, like many others I'm sure, selectively update apps based on reviews. I'm sure there is either an app store refresh/update on Apple's end or a run on the app store causing errors or issues.

  • I can't get the mac app store. There's no software update availiable and it seems i can't upgrade to Mac OS X Lion without that.

There's no mac app store availiable to download for me.
I want to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion, but without that mac app store it seems to be impossible.
I did all software updates but never got that mac app store. So what can I do now?

THis is because you have two OS X upgrade steps. First, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard ($29 us, disk only, no download).
Once you've upgraded to Snow Leopard, and run Software Update to get to 10.6.8 then you'll have the Mac App Store and can take the second OS X upgrade step to Lion 10.7.2.

  • Update in Mac App Store, just not for my account

My Mac App Store tells me that I've got at update for one of my programs, but when I open Mac App Store it's a update for Angry Birds, a game I don't have on my mac. When I press update a pop-up appears and say I need to login with [email protected] to update the program/game. Problem is that [email protected] looks like a russian account and i'm not from Russia. My account is set up with a gmail account and doesn't look anything like the russian account.
    Am I being hacked?
    Can anyone please help me?

Since my last comment I have come up with a way to hunt down the pirated app.
All MAS apps have a MAS receipt in their app bundle. Check any app acquired from the MAS. Right click on the app's icon in your Apps folder and choose Show package contents. In the Contents folder is a _MASReceipt folder and in that folder is the coded MAS receipt. It has the Apple ID of the MAS account that bought/acquired the app from the MAS. It is that receipt that the MAS uses to alert you that an app has an update. There would not be a notice of an update with someone else's Apple ID showing in the MAS on your Mac, if there was not an app with a receipt from this person's account somewhere on your Mac.
    Download the free app FindAnyFile (FAF);
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
This app is easier to use and seems to be more powerful than Spotlight. Open FAF and in the box type _MASReceipt and press Find. It should come up with a list of every app on the Mac with a MAS receipt. Compare the apps with receipts in FAF's list with your purchased apps list in the Mac App Store. The odd app out should be the pirated app.
