IMovie09 quits at launch since I moved events to external drive

I recently installed iMovie09 but was running out of space on my internal drive so I bought an external drive and moved the events but not the projects to the external drive. Now whenever I try to launch iMovie09, as it is coming up, it lists my events in the lower third of the window, then brings up the initial scene from one of the projects whose events I moved in the upper right screen, but never brings up a project list, just quits. Any suggestions?

  • Moving events to external drive

    Hi there,
I have imported about 20G of video into iMovie08 that I want to move onto an external hard drive. I cannot simply grag it over. Can it be done? Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks a bunch,
    Peter

But iMovie does NOT recognize them from my macbook. It appears they physically have to be connected.
I suspect too FireWire drive(s) must be physically connected to your MacBook, although I'm not certain.
I have a network similar to yours, so I'll describe what iMovie does here.
When I use the Finder to mount a Network computer on my Desktop (a PowerBook connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, not wirelessly) the Finder also lets me mount its FW drive. When I mount both, iMovie displays both the computer and its FW drive in the iMovie Events list.
The icons for the PowerBook and its FW drive display an exclamation point inside a yellow triangle, suggesting they are not available to iMovie.
I don't know whether iMovie's reluctance to use the drives is because of permission settings or because iMovie refuses to accept network devices. I haven't tried fiddling with permissions on the PowerBook/FW drive. (It's my backup server, so I don't want to adjust settings needlessly.)
If your drive supports USB, you might try connecting it directly to the wireless base station using USB. That might allow iMovie to accept the drive. Whether or not the network/USB will deliver the speed iMovie needs is a separate question, but you might at least be able to move your Events to the drive after importing video to your MacBook
Otherwise, it may be necessary to attach the FW drive directly to your MacBook.
Please let us know how it works out.

  • MainStage crashes upon launch after moving sounds to external drive

I had been advised to put all my softsynth sounds (Omnisphere, Ivory, Sonik Synth, Sample Tank) on an EXTERNAL drive to free up my computer's CPU and hard disk. I discarded the sounds from my computer and put them on an external Rockstor Firewire 800 drive. Now, Main Stage crashes upon launch. Can anyone help me?

Try building a Concert from scratch, using your external drive sounds. It could be that your instruments can't find their prior samples (wrong paths), but you would hopefully get an error message for that. That would be my #1 suspect.
Is your drive a fast one, properly installed, any current drivers, etc, and have you had a similar problem with other file intensive applications (audio, video, etc) since moving files? If your drive or bus is too slow to provide the required bits, this would also be suspect.

  • Cannot move or copy Projects or Events to external drive

Short version: I have a project that I have been working on for a few months. Now that it's burned off to DVD, I want to store the whole thing on an External (Seagate) drive, in case I want to come back to it later. (For now, it's just sucking up space on the internal drive).
I have done this before, even a few months ago with another project, but now the commands don't seem to work:
Internal hard drive has the Project Files.
Referenced Event files (some stills, other video clips, etc.) are on the Internal drive, and some on the External (Seagate) drive.
I tried to "Copy to..." the Event folder to an external drive's Library, but I get a quick "Rendering..." and then nothing.
I tried to "Move to..." the Event folder to an external drive's, but I get a quick "Rendering..." and then nothing.
I tried to drag-Move one of the Project folders from the internal Library to the external drive, and it looked like it was moving, but after a while, I did NOT see the Project either in the Internal Library OR in the External drive Library!!! I had actually LOST the Project! (I was able to restore the project from a Time Machine backup from a few days ago... but at least one of the Media Clips is now missing!).
I have heard that you cannot (or should not) have more than one Final Cut Pro Library on a single drive, so I also used a 500GB external LaCie USB powered drive to recover the "old" version of the main Library from Time Machine... then copied the restored backup Event into the main Library. THIS WORKED! But I cannot then copy anything OUT from my Main Library!!
    I am running a 2014 MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM, 1TB internal drive.
    OS 10.9.3
    FCP 10.1.1
External drive is a 1TB Seagate USB 3.0 connection
I have fixed Permissions, Checked the Drive(s) even rebuilt the Volume (using TechTool Pro 7.0.4), but nothing seems to be "wrong." I just can't get the Events adn Projects to Copy or Move!
    Thanks for your help!
    Eli

I did this to transfer my mess of media management on my old Mac Pro to my new Mac Pro.
I highly recommend that you not use the Move command, but only use the Copy command. I accidentally used the Move command and then it was sitting there with the "Render" thing that you mentioned and I thought it was not doing anything, so I cancelled and that didn't do anything, so I forced quit. BIG MISTAKE.
When I fired FCP X back up, my huge feature film project had a couple hundred missing clips, because it was in the process of moving them to the other drive and the links were all hosed.
I had to go through and reconnect it all, which took about a day.
What I did was I drag and dropped the project files into the event that held the media for that project. I then used the Copy to command. This worked even though it sometimes looked like it wasn't doing anything. It would take a very long time. Walk away from the system. You will see the 100% notification in FCP X when it's done. It will just have a spinning wheel there for several minutes when you first start the command.
It took me a couple days to get everything over, but it worked. Now, my new Mac Pro has clean media management with a Library for each project on an external drive and everything is self contained in that library and none of the media is linked, it's all contained in the library. I think this is the best method for handling media in FCP X just in case you need to move it again or back it up (just drag and drop the library).
    Just my opinion. Good luck.

  • Moved Library to external drive and can't get my library!

Someone please help me! I have moved all my photos to an external drive but do not understand how I can get iPhoto to automatically recognize this and grab my photos into the library on startup. I did the same thing in iTunes and had no issues!
I'm sure its an easy fix....I just have no clue how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Quit iPhoto. Hold down the Option key as you launch iPhoto. A dialog box will ask you to Choose or Create a library. Select Choose, then navigate to the iPhoto Library folder on your external drive. It should open in exactly the same condition as before you moved it.
    Regards.

  • Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out   can't be selected. What went wrong?

    Must have done something wrong..
    1.  formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine.  Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
    2.  moved iPhoto library to new external disk
    3.  Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
    4.  Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected.  Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto.  A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry?  Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    Then try select it again.

  • Incorrect project dates after moving to new external drive

    I'm running iMovie 09 8.0.5 and Leopard.
I have moved projects from my macbook internal drive to an external drive by dragging them within imovie. I picked move both projects and events. Both projects and events moved. I can play the project from the new external drive. The dates on the events are correct, but the dates on the projects have changed to today's date. Since I have 50+ projects, they are not sorted properly. The project on my internal drive are grouped by year. How do I get this on the external drive? I can find no way to set the project date within iMovie.

An update. I've figured out a workaround.
First of all, you must created folders yourself in the project library for the external hard drive. That is done by right-clicking on the external hard drive in project library. I must have done that a long time ago for the internal hard drive.
Second changing the date associated with the project itself is tricky. It is governed by the modification date of the Project file within the project itself. You can't see this file without using "Show Package Contents" in the finder.
The easiest way to change the modification date is using the terminal and touch command.
I have a external disk named Home Videos Primary 1000 GB
The project name is 2007 Christmas Rocket
and the correct terminal command is
    touch -mt 0801040000 /Volumes/Home\ Videos\ Primary\ 1000\ GB/iMovie\ Projects.localized/2007\ Christmas\ Rocket.rcproject/Project
I entered this command this by typing touch -mt -0801040000 (followed by a space) into the terminal window and then dragging the aforementioned Project file into the terminal window (which provided the correct path).

  • Problem with project after upgrading to 10.1 and moving libraties to external drive

I need to make some updates to a project I created over a year ago prior to upgrading to 10.1.  Also since creating, I moved my Final Cut Libraries off to an external drive.  The only about 25% of the clips in the project appear to be linked to the original media even though all appear to be in the Original Media folder.  I have tried as a test to put the original video files into a folder outside of any FCP files and used that to use the "Relink Media" function under "Edit"  The attached link to a pdf doc shows the error message I get.  I have no idea how to proceed from here to recover this important project.
    Running Yosemite

    Russ
I copied the Original Media folder to a new location and then relinked to the new folder.  The process ran without error.  However that did not fix the problem.  The clip content isn't there for 80% of the clips.  The system was rendering in the background for hours.  I went to bed.  When I got up and checked using the view background tasks it stalled at some point.  I tried exporting the XML and importing into a new library.  I got a waring message about an unrecognized cross dissolve transition.  When I opened the project in the new library the time line looked exactly the same and it behaved exactly as the original project. Thoughts?

  • Problems moving folders to external drive on a Mac

I am having the hardest time moving pictures in lightroom to an external drive. I can select pictures and move them one by one, or in bulk, but if I select a folder of pictures and drag and drop them to an external drive, they won't move. It appears they have moved, but when I select the picture, and select show in finder, it shows they are being copied from my MASTER drive with pictures to my SSD boot drive root.
I have an SSD boot, a MASTER with all the pictures, an SSD scratch with the catalog, and an external drive for old pictures all running in Yosemite, Lightroom 5.7, on a Mac Pro.
Is there a way to reset Lightroom settings so I can start from scratch? Or is it possible it could be a permissions error. I tried setting all permissions on all drives to Read & Write for all folders and files with no luck.

You can start from scratch by creating a new catalog from the menu:
    File >> New catalog
Choose a new name for the catalog and save. When the empty calalog launches you are ready to import.
A safer way to move folders is to drag your folder using Finder to the external hard drive. That will make a copy of the folder and files. Then in LR you right-click (or control-click) on the folder name in the left-hand panel and choose update folder location. Navigate to the external drive location and LR will re-link everything automatically. The beauty of this method is that you can ensure everything is OK before deleting the folder from your internal drive.

  • Copy event onto external drive

If I select clips in an event, and drag to external drive, is it copying as opposed to moving all clips over. At first I tried select all, copy, paste, and didn't work.

Dragging Events and Projects between dirves in the Libraries copies them over, assigning the new copy its own unique UUID so that FCP X doesn't confuse them.  Never copy them in the Finder, or FCP will only be able to open one of them and not the other, as they'll both have the same UUID.  Think of UUID as a unique database identification number each Event (database) and Project (database) contain internally.
No, you can't copy/paste, that's not how it works.
If you want to "move" something to another drive, do the copy first, verify it was a good copy and nothing got messed up.  Only then would I right-click that Event or Project in the Library and at the bottom of the pop-up menu chose "Move To Trash".

  • Moving from one external drive to another

    Hi,
I've had a lot of difficulty having all my music on an external drive. iTunes keeps trying to localize my files on my local disk's music folder.
Anyway, I have all my music on one external drive, which I've just done a complete copy of to another drive. All the files are in the same place.
Is there a way to get iTunes to see all the new files without removing all the songs from my iTunes library and re-adding them from the new drive?
    Thanks

I keep all my iTunes content stored on an external drive myself. Over the last few years, I have swapped that drive out a few times for a larger capacity drive with no problems. With iTunes closed, I copied the contents onto the new drive, then ejected the old one. After doing that, I renamed the new drive to have the same drive name/label as the old drive, so to the OS it looked like it was still the same old drive. One that was done, iTunes just treated the new drive as if it was still the old one. One other thing I have done is that I have moved my iTunes library file onto the external drive as well. This will cause iTunes to give me an error message about not being able to open the library if the external drive is not attached for some reason, and therefore it never writes to the internal drive. I haven't tried this myself, but I would think that you could get similar results by using aliases to point the iTunes folders off to the external drive as well.

  • Moving library to external drive

I am helping a client that has an iMac G4 with OS X 10.4. She has a LOT of photos in her iPhoto Library, around 25000 of them, and she is almost out of space on her internal hard drive. She has a new external drive that I would like to move her iPhoto library to.
I found instructions on the iPhoto information page. However, when I drag the iPhoto Library over to the external drive, it starts copying but then after a while I get an error about not being able to copy an alias file and it stops copying.
Also the copy procedure seems very slow, it was showing that it would take 9 hours to copy those photos. While I was watching the file transfer it was only moving about 100MB every minute. Does this model just have the older slow USB connection?

Hi, Techserv. Any iMac G4 built before September 2003 has USB 1.1, not USB 2.0 ports. With such a machine it makes no sense at all to use a USB-only external hard drive. Your client should have a FireWire-capable drive enclosure instead. It would be many times faster.

  • Moving files to external drive - need Mac and PC compatibility in future

    Hello -
I'm moving a client's video files to an external drive so they have the original files. I'm moving both the DV files (always usable with program that accepts DV files) and the Mac project files in a separate folder (in case they ever work on them in a mac - includes all the referenced files). I know they won't be able to open the latter on a PC but I'd still like to include.
BUT, can they get any external drive? If I plug it into my computer and move files, are they going to run into problems if they use then on a PC? Thinking about getting this one for them (they are paying but want a good price for them):

    Thanks for your help -

Don't have a solution for you, but I did encounter a very similar bug.
I was moving files from one iMac's external drive to another's internal drive, using a drag'n'drop move command on a directory. The move generated an error message, maybe the same as what you saw (I'm not sure), then aborted the move. Only one small file had been moved, and the source directory was gone! Not in the trash. Mac OS X 10.4.8 on both systems, an iMac DV and an iMac 24. The external drive was formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."
This sure seems to be a basic programming mistake. So, for me, it's back to doing 3 steps: copy, verify, delete. It's lousy not to be able to rely on proper execution of a basic command, but I've never won an argument with a computer.

  • Moved iphoto to external drive and now can't find it.

I backed up iphoto library on Apple TV and External Hard Drive. Confirmed they transferred and then deleted the file on computer. When I try to run iphoto, it opens a screen that asks me which library I want to use. I can't find the library on my external drive or apple TV drive. Though I can see every picture on my TV. I think I messed this up big time and trying to recover the pictures of my kids. Any help would be appreciated. Clearly I am not computer smart.

1 - in the future never delete a file until you have fully tested the backup you made
2 - depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the :select Library" option and you should see all available libraries
Report back exactly what happens and what you see if it does not solve your issue

  • Updated to 10.1, now can't find projects/events on external drives

Yesterday, I blithely updated my Final Cut Pro X to version 10.1. Now I am totally lost...
I have gradually got used to the way FCP operates and now, all my Events and Projects are on an external drive, organised in a series of folders; current, finished etc.
When I started FCP yesterday, instead of finding any of my events and projects, FCP created a new Library on my HD.
I use a Macbook Air and do not use my small HD for FCP... how do I tell FCP where all my files are?
I can create a new library on my HD but if I try to move it to the external drive, it is copied and if I delete the original, FCP creates another one on the HD...
Getting lost and confused as there appears to have been a wholesale change of the basic way in which FCP functions.
I don't want to use my HD library as a 'working' library, not least because I don't know how to then find the files, to transfer them to the external drive to back them up.
Also, the HD is far too small for this purpose.
How do I go about persuading FCP to set up and then use libraries on my external drives?

You have to let your projects and events sit in the expected folders in order to have FCP X 10.1 update them to new libraries. If 10.1 sees old events and projects in your external drive (they need to be in the places older versions required them, i.e. at the root level in "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" folders) it will offer to update them to a new library.
You should heed Philip Hoggetts' advice about using Event Manager X (now free) to help with managing the transition. You probably don't want to gobble up all your previous projects and events in one mega-library, but give it some form of organization. See here: http://www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/1304-upgrade-your-events-and-projects- to-fcpx-10-1-libraries-the-smart-way
