Hi Appleman, thanks for your reply.
I have a 4 to 9 pin cable... brand new Rocketfish from Best Buy.  I don't know about this brand of Cable but it's what I'm trying with the Canon HV20.
With the Canon XH A1s, I've been using a Belkin 6 pin to 9 pin cable that's been working great until I updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5.  As soon as I updated, the camera stopped connecting to the computer.  The cable was the first thing I tried to replace, so I got a Gigaware cable from Radio Shack but still no fix.
For both cameras, I've only been using AC power plugged into a wall socket.  The Canon HV20 is set to PLAY HDV, and the Canon XH A1s is set to VCR PLAY, which is the correct setting.  I've tried FILE/IMPORT and the IMPORT button in both i-Movie'11 and FCP X, and neither recognizes either camera.
The Systems Report/Firewire always reads in red letters - "Warning.  Unable to List Firewire Device".
An important question is was your  DV camera a tape camcorder?  It's important because this is an update problem that seems to be consistent with Firewire MiniDV camcorders, but not necessarily tapeless DV cams with other means of uploading.  It's not that i-Movie or FCP X won't recognize the firewire device.  It's the updated OS X itself seems to be the issue.
Tapeless camcorders will most likely work with OS X Lion 10.7.5 and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, but miniDV firewire camcorders may no longer work.  Mine doesn't.  And apparently, this is happening to other people.
I know I have to go tapeless eventually, but the Canon XH A1s is an excellent camera and I figured I'd use it for another year or so before doing so.  It worked fine on OS X 10.7.4 (just a week ago) but not after the update was installed. Now, I'm stuck with no camera, and I've got gigs scheduled.

I'm using iPod touch for a year now. It was doing fine this morning but in the afternoon suddenly when I took it out of my bag, the screen was just black and it wouldn't turn on and stuff. So I thought it didn't have battery so I charged it didn't work. I plugged to the computer and it said iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before in can be used with iTunes.

Other than these, it will not connect to another phone/device/computer/etc.

  • Big problems with Firewire iPod and camcorder  - please help!

    Hi all,
I don't know where else to turn with this problem. I think I've damaged my Firewire kit.
I have an iPod 4G 20GB and a Canon MV901 MiniDV Camcorder. I used them both over Firewire with my Pismo without difficulty, but I then tried video editing on my Windows machine with a firewire PCI card. Scrabbling around the back of my computer, I think I somehow managed to get the firewire cable to the camcorder in the socket upside down, reversing the power and data conncectors. Nothing really happened, but the camcorder stopped showing up. I tried it a good few times, then tried my iPod. By some bizarre coincidence, I think I managed to plug the iPod in the same way. Now, my iPod doesn't work on either the Windows machine or the Pismo over firewire, but does over USB2.0 on my Windows machine.
I measured the power going through the Firewire power pins as around 13.5 volts on my Pismo and the card, but the card also has an auxiliary power connector. This was disconnected when I tested it, but was connected when the iPod and camcorder were.
The thing I would like to know is whether a voltage spike of this size could fry the firewire controllers on both devices. The iPod's diagnostic mode detects that firewire is connected, but will not show up. Strangely, it still charges over firewire from either machine. Have I permanately damaged the firewire controllers?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob Johnson

    Rob,
If you mistakenly inserted the FireWire connector twisted 180 degrees, the power lines can be directly connected to the data lines and can result in a fried PHY (connects the port to the FireWire bridge) or the FireWire bridge itself.
You can take a look at the voltage specs for FireWire ports and see that your voltage readings are well withing specs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58207
I am not sure where you go from here. You could try a known-good FireWire device connected to your Pismo and see if it works. If not, the data-side of the FW port may have failed. I don't know about testing the iPod or camcorder.
A possible cheap fix for the Pismo FireWire is a FireWire PC card; if running 10.x, it will just be a plug & play affair. However, unlike built-in FireWire ports, FireWire PC cards supply very little bus power. Your camcorder will work since it has it owns power supply (assuming there is no hardware failure) and but am unsure about the iPod. The iPod will not charge, of course, but it may still work in data transfers. There are a few FireWire PC cards that also have their own power supply.

  • Problems detecting new ram... Please help this cavemen

So I intaled a 512ram to my ibook but I cant get it to detect it. I already hit the refresh button in the profiler and restarted while holding option, comand,r & p.
    What could be wrong?
I dont think the ram is perfectly flat but im afraid to push harder in a vertical direction rather than a horizontal one. I can still see the gold teeths of the card.
The card is a PC2700 DDR333 SO DIMM

I doubt that the Dimm is seated correctly, they are tough to get to sit down properly. Does the ram show up when you open "about this mac"? If it doesn't I would remove it and re-install it.

  • Panasonic P2 Footage Recovery - Please Help :(

A horrible accident happened on set after we captured some amazing footage. All our P2 cards were imported onto a P2 Store Portable Hard drive and then transfered onto a Western Digital removable hard drive. The Western Digital hard drive was then plugged into Final Cut Pro 5.1 and using the P2 import window, the user highlighted all the clips except 1 and hit delete (thinking this would remove them from the import window to transfer one at a time). No warniing came up and then they discovered all the P2 footage had been deleted from the hard drive. The P2 Store was reformated before this happened.
We have left the Western Digital hard drive alone and have tried running various recovery programs: data resque & file salvage & Media Recover. We were told not to use Tech Tools because it may delete the files (this was told by an IT tech guy at Tech Tools, so that scares us enough). The next program on our list was to try Stellar (this already did see the files but so far it won't recover them).....
Any tips to help recover would be greatly appreciated. This is on a Mac formated hard drive Final Cut 5.1.
Thanks so much for all of your help

I'm not sure if this is the same product you mentioned...but I've had luck to recover deleted files once with Data Rescue II.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/datarescueinfo.php
Files deleted, trash emptied, and other data had been written. But, this was able to pull back some trashed image sequences. With the P2 footage, you're probably dealing with much more material...but if you haven't tried this version, it's worth a shot.

  • Headphones detected when there is none? Please help!

    Hello!
I am in search of major help. I have owned my iPod Touch for a while now, never had a problem with it until recently.
I sometimes unplug the iPod's headphones because I wish to show something to someone.... however, although I have unplugged the headphones it still shows them as plugged in, and the speakers will not work.
This is normally not such a big problem because I normally have my headphones plugged in. Nevertheless, it is very annoying.
Please, help me! Your help is very appreciated.
    -Thanks!

If you are brave you could try squirting some electrical contact cleaner in the jack and then quickly insert/remove/insert/remove the headphone plug.

  • Windows 8 is not detecting my VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder

Windows 8 is not detecting my VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder. I wonder if anyone else have the same problem.
I did install the latest version of CameraWindow (i.e.CameraWindow DC 8.8 for Windows) software and I tried to run it manually but it complains that it is not able to detect my (connected) VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder. CameraWindow is able to see my G10 Camera though.
Does this mean that VIXIA HF M40 Camcorder cannot be used with Windows 8??? This will be terrible!
    Please help!

    Hi Arabed,
I'm sorry to hear that you're unable to transfer your still images from your VIXIA HF M40 to your computer.  (For videos, please ensure that you're using the "Pixela Transfer Utility", included with your camcorder).
Have you been able to transfer still images from your camcorder before?
Have you received any error messages with regard to the connection itself?

  • What is the best way to transfer video from a Panasonic HDC-SD60 camcorder on to a DVD using iDVD?

I am trying to get my Panasonic HDC-SD60 camcorder to transfer video over to a DVD using iDVD.  The iDVD wants the firewire connection to be used,  No mini USB to firewire line exists.  Any help?

iDVD is part of the iLife suite of apps.
in this collection, iMovie is the 'importer', esp. via usb from AVCHD-devices like yours.
plus editor, I mostly doubt, you haven't to 'clean' here&there your recordings
from there you 'share' to iDVD.
you'll notice a loss of quality in this process due to  cam is HDef, any videoDVD is always SDef .....

  • Connecting Panasonic PV GS35 camcorder

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro. I am trying to connect my Panasonic PV GS35 camcorder to download videos but weh Mac doesn't recognize it. Using a Firewire 800 cable.

Launch the Image Capture app located in your Applications folder.
See if the camcorder shows up on the left side of the Image Capture window.
If so, click the small black box with a down facing arrow bottom left side of the Image Capture window.
Select an application you want to copy the video over to or you can click the Import To: pop up menu and select a folder to save video to.

  • Panasonic PV-GS400 camcorder

I'm having trouble getting the IMac to recognize the connection with my Panasonic MV-GS400 camcorder. Is it compatible? Can I use the DV port to transfer my videos verses the USB or is camcorder compatibility going to over rule anything I try? I don't have a DV line currently to try it, looking for information before I purchase one.

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
The PV-GS400 should work perfectly well via its FireWire port.
(The USB socket is for transferring only stills from this camera, not video.)
"..I don't have a DV line currently to try it, looking for information before I purchase one.." ..er? D'you mean that you don't have a FireWire cable to use with this camera..? If so, any brand of 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire (..also called a DV cable or 'i.Link'..) cable should do.
Buy a cable, start iMovie, connect the camera, put it in VCR or Replay mode, start importing.
