IMovie11 hangs, freezes while generating thumbnails

Often after importing MiniDV tapes using iMovie11 the progress bar for generating thumbnails gets to a certain point and then stops. It will remain this way for over a day unless I Force Quit the application.
The event directory and thumbnail directory of the imported tape do not show any recently created files after a while.
A search on the internet revealed one workaround - delete any zero-byte DV files that iMovie creates and reload iMovie. This worked for a couple of tapes but now I am stuck while importing other tapes.
I am not using Stabilization.
As of this writing, I may have narrowed the problem down to the number of DV files that iMovie creates. For some reason, with those other tapes, it creates almost 2000 such files for a simple 90-minute tape. When I delete over a 1000 of the smallest DV files iMovie will complete the generation of thumbnails.
I have not yet tested what happens if I delete over a 1000 of the largest DV files.
If I import the same tape twice, the two imports will produce a different number of DV files, the difference is in the hundreds but both data sets are still too large for iMovie11 to generate thumbnails from.
I have tried using two different camcorders for importing those other tapes without positive results.
I have a new low-end Mac Pro with the OS present as of Oct of last year (when I bought the computer), 8GB of RAM, 600MB of free disk space, and I use a Firewire adapter to convert the 400 mbps connection coming out of the camcorders to the 800 mbps connection integral to my Mac Pro.
I have tried powering down and back up to remove variables involving the OS and Firewire interface.
I have no other movie projects or events present in iMovie when I conduct my imports.
How do I get iMovie11 to stop hanging, freezing while it generates thumbnails?
Thank you.

Absolutely has to be a bug. This isn't a setting or configuration problem. It might even be a Snow Leopard problem. I had the same problems with A2.1.4 on SL as I do with version A3.0.1. Export hangs seem to happen on images that came from my A2 library that was imported into A3 but originally adjusted in A2. These images were imported from scanned TIFF files. If the adjustment mechanism was flawed in prior Aperture versions then Apple needs to create and distribute a utility that converts these images into something that A3 can use.
I will have to revert to A2 running on Leopard until Apple can get this fixed. If I cannot export, there is no point in running the software. On this discussion thread, we are just trying to fly by flapping our arms.

  • 1.3.1 freezes while generating thumbnails?

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this problem.
After upgrading to 1.3.1, Lightroom freezes whenever I view my library in the grid view. The CPU pegs to 100% (on one of my 2 cores). Lightroom becomes unresponsive (spinning beach ball of death).
I have about 11000 photos from two cameras. If I select a folder containing only older photos from my Nikon D50, everything's fine. As soon as I select a new folder with images from my D300, it inevitably freezes, though it's slightly unpredictable as to how long that takes. I'm shooting with Compressed Lossless RAW (NEF). I've been building and upgrading this catalog since Lightroom Beta 2, and I've also edited images with Adobe Bridge -- but the newest D300 images have (obviously) only been edited with Lightroom 1.3 or later.
    Running Mac OS-X 10.4.10.
    Tried:
    - Importing everything into a new catalog, in case the metadata was corrupt.
    - Deleted .xmp files.
    - Deleting the "Lightroom Catalog Previews" folder.
    - Deleting individual images.
If I delete previews and relaunch, Lightroom freezes after generating previews for between 10-30 images. If I manage switch into Develop mode before it freezes, then I can work on one image for a while, but it freezes again as soon as I switch back to the grid.
Any ideas? This is crippling my workflow! :-)
Tonight, I will try converting everything to DNG (after backing up). My one theory is that there's a bug in reading Nikon D300's new RAW format. (There have been other similar problems reported recently, i.e., Nikon's own software crashes on Windows Vista with the new RAW format, and Lightroom's own problems with the D100.)
    Thanks!

What worked for me was to force restart the iPhone (while disconnected from docking station) SEVERAL times. After 1 force restart I would connect to the Mac and it would have an error.
I took someone's advice and restarted the iPhone 3 times, then the Mac... made sure I had latest iTunes software, and restored the iPhone to full capacity.
    Good luck

  • Aperture 3: multiple export hangs while generating thumbnails?

Sigh. I was almost ready to write a blog post claiming that while AP3 has its share of bugs, it's not the unusable mess some have painted it to be. This morning I'm no so sure anymore. I think this is stellar update with tons of potential. When it works it screams on my machine and the new features are amazing. But guys, i need the basics to work.
Here's what I've just sent t via the feedback form:
I've been trying to export 29 pictures in web format for the past 40 minutes. I've had to force-quit AP three times and restart my machine twice. Aperture starts exporting at a normal pace but then completely hangs on a "generating thumbnails" process. At this point it becomes impossible to either cancel the task or quit Aperture normally. It also kicks my iMac's fan into overdrive - something that NEVER happens.
    This is not good.
    Other problems:
    - random crashes while using brushes.
    - second display doesn't follow "blank" command and keeps reverting to "alternate" even when the menu says Blank.
This is a great version of Aperture with a lot of potential. These bugs are killing me though.
I've just rebuilt the database. If it's still not working I'm going to remove plugins and see if it helps.
Anyone else having problems with this?

  • IMovie freezes while creating thumbnails from Canon FS31 flash recorder

    Hi,
Borrowed at Canon FS31 from work. Attempting to import video to iMovie '08. The application hangs while generating thumbnails during the "camera detected" process, so it doesn't even get to the import screen.
I tried force quitting iMovie and reopening- same problem.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

If that fixed it, I would recommend that you reformat the card using the camera menu. Then see if it will work directly from the card. It should also work directly from the camera, but the camera has to be plugged in to the wall. With a card reader, you don't have to worry about plugging in the camera to AC power.

  • IMovie update 7.1.2 crashes at start while generating thumbnails

Since I updated iMovie to v7.1.2 it crashes every time I open it. First shows a message saying that a camera has been detected (although there is no camera connected) Then it starts generating thumbnails and crashes.
    I re-installed version 7.1.1 and works wonderfully

After a very patient work I could make my iMovie work.
When the iMovie 7.1.4 update starts (7.1.2 had the same issue) it checks your HD (and all other storage devices you may have connected) for video files. This is different from version 7.1.1. If during the check, for any reason, cannot access a file, it crashes.
In my case I had to check permissions for every video file and/or folder containing them until I solved the problem. Fixing permissions with Disk Utility or changing permissions for a folder and all enclosed subfolders, it is not enough. You have to check each individual file. Not very difficult but time consuming.
Now iMovie is working fine. I really regret that Apple made a change in the two last updates without any warning. After all the turmoil provoked in this and in other related forums by desperate iMovie users experiencing this problem, they should have acknowledged the issue. By the way. it started last June. I would have expected that they publish some suggestions in their support website.
I spent almost 4 hours doing what finally was the answer to the problem. Not to mention the timeless trials I made during the last months.

  • Dock is hanging/freezing while all others is working

    Hi all!
My iMac starts making trouble latley. It tends to hang while shutting down. Dock and Wallpaper are already gone and the computer freezes with a grey screen in the back and a none movable mouse pointer.
I believe it is related to the Dock, since sometimes, during normal operation, the MAC (64Bit) keeps running and just and only the dock freezes. It does not allow to click any icon than. The finder is still doing good and I can start a program by browsing the applications folder. If I would shutdown the computer now, it will hang as described.
In the process list the "Dock" process is looking normal. Killing just lets the Dock disappear but it is not restarted.
Killing the Finder does not change anything.
Does anybody know how to troubleshoout the freezing dock? Any plist file or some reset procedure?
I have already checked the hardware using a diag software. I also reinstalled Snow Leopard but no help from this end.
Thx for any idea on that!

Yep, I have started my iMac in 64Bit mode. But this cannot be the culprit. The Mac is running in 64Bit since quite a while and the reported problem just started lately.
Thx for the plist file - I will give it a try!
However, latest hang does not necessarily confirm this to be a dock issue. Meanwhile I had thise hangs while shutting down with the dock being ok till the very end. In that state I cannot operate the Mac at all, as no GUI is up and running anymore. I have not tried yet a remote login. I am totally out of ideas how to troubleshoot this and I would prefer to do it somehwo "professional" and not just do a new install from scratch
I will provide feedbacl concerning the plist file ...
Do you have an further ideas?
    Thx again!

  • FCP7.03 hangs/freezes while loading project

I have a Final Cut project file for this feature film I've been working on forever. The project has stopped opening. FCP freezes immediately after the 'offline files' dialogue box. (doesn't matter whether I reconnect media or not.) It thinks for a second, then spinning wheel of death for 5 minutes, then it crashes. I get a KGCore error, which FCS Maintenance interprets as 'out of memory.' Obviously this error isn't the cause, but a symptom.
I just got my computer back from the shop, with leopard 10.5.x. After I had installed all my applications / plugins, something happened, where from that point on I'd get the crash I just described. I troubleshot all the applications, plugins, etc. Uninstalled everything and reinstalled it one at a time. I was able to open the project once after a fresh FCP install, then when I tried to open the same project again seconds later, it froze again with the same problem. Then the same crash every time. I updated FCS, and the first time I tried to open the project it worked fine. Seconds later when I tried to replicate the result, I got the exact same crash. From that point on, the project crashed every time. I ran MemTest and it came out good. Also, last week I had my harddrive, superdrive, battery and screen replaced, and everything else passed the Apple Tech's inspection, so I am confident this is not a hardware issue.
So I reformatted the computer -> 10.6.4. I reinstalled FCS3 and CS4 and Magic Bullet looks for FCP & AE. Everything worked perfectly for 3 days. Then last night I installed Automatic Duck Free XML Exporter [FCP] and this afternoon I installed Automatic Duck Pro Import AE [AE]. Now I suddenly I can't open the FCP project again. Exact same error. Freezes immediately after the offline files dialogue box every time. I am able to open other FCP projects though.
Today I tried uninstalling the Free XML exporter, uninstalling Pro Import AE, trashing my preferences, repairing disc permissions, setting my scratch discs to external drives, and I uninstalled and reinstalled CS4 and FCS3 without any plugins. After the fresh install, Final Cut opened the project perfectly the first time, and then gave me exact same crash every subsequent time I opened the project.
I talked to tech support at automatic duck and the guy said the only file that could possibly affect FCP is the xml exporter bundle in final cut pro plugins. It made sense to me that that was the problem, but at this point I've not only uninstalled that plugin to no avail, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled CS4 and FCS3 too, so I'm thinking its something bigger than that.
I can't wrap my head around whats going on. I'd be more than happy to reformat the machine again as long as I know it will work afterwards. I just can't spend days working on this only to have it implode right afterwards.

I have not tried exporting xmls for each sequence. Its a good last resort for sure, but the thing is that this project is huge. Including the sequence backups for my rough cut and fine cut (which I really don't need), there's got to be 600+ sequences.
I can't figure out how to post attachments here, so I'm including a segment of the 3 crash logs my machine's generated since the last reformat. Please advise on the protocol for posting crash logs. Thanks.

  • Imovie freeze on generating thumbnail for iphoto videos

When I open imovie, there is a message that says "do you want to generate iphoto video thumbmails?" now or later.  As I have iphoto videos missing in imovie, i press on now.  It then says that a certain movie is missing and then freezes and I cannot quit imovie.

    Hi there,
I would recommend trying the troubleshooting steps described in the article below.
iMovie: How to troubleshoot "Application Unexpectedly Quit" messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3143
    -Griff W.

  • My iMovie is stuck on Generating Thumbnails. Timer increases instead of decreasing.

My iMovie11 is stuck on generating thumbnails. Timer increases rather than decreases.Have to force quit.

You might be able to trick iMovie by temporarily moving that project folder out of the following location:
Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects > (look for the name of the project that blew-up)
Drag that project folder to the Desktop for the time being. Launch iMovie and see if it still tries to create the Project Thumbnails. If it gets past any error messages or other house keeping, you can create a new project. Otherwise, quit iMovie. Drag that project folder from the desktop BACK into your iMovie Projects folder. Try launching iMovie again and see if it gets stuck generating the Thumbnails.

    hey
i m facing system hangs/freezes while gaming. it is all along working fine but suddenly problem arrises outta nowhere.  mostly happens in Metro Last Light Game.  i did change multiple things like 2 different rams stick, Bios are 4.1v (at default), i tried 2 different GPUs like 290 and 580 but stilll facing same issue. dont know why.
if you can help on it this, it would be alot appreciated.

What is the actual power supply?
    Follow this >>Posting Guide<<
Make sure you run latest BIOS.
PS: Intel ME driver is crucial, without it system won't work properly, and that's why it didn't freeze anymore. Same applies to GPUs: if you have 400W power supply and want to run 2-way SLI, it will be fine until you install drivers, which make the computer and graphic cards recognise how much power they have and so on

  • [SOLVED] ARCH Install Freezes While making fallback image

    Hi,
I am having some issues install arch on my desktop, the install is freezing while generating the 'fallback' image, this makes no sense to me as it has just compiled the main image, and should be the exact same.
I have run memtest x86 on each stick of ram (one at a time, and both in at the same time) with no errors.
I have tried both the X86_64 and the i686 both on CD and USB, and the install froze during the fallback kernel every time.
I am using the 2009.08 versions. and have downloaded the images from both mirror.internode and the main arch website link.
I have tried Zero filling the hard-drive with seatool, and it has passed a S.M.A.R.T HDD test (also on seatools)
I am just about to try a different distro just to check. I had arch installed last week but something went incredibly wrong during the last update, so i chose to format it and start fresh.
    Any ideas?

  • IMovie '11 freezes while trying to generate iPhoto thumbnails

So I need to move videos from iPhoto to iMovie '11. iMovie said I had to generate thumbnails before I could do that so I pressed ok. The pop-up window shows "generating thumbnails Processing Event: iPhoto Videos Time Remaning: " the window said it would take a few minutes, but after two hours, there has been no progress made (at all) in the progress bar and there isn't even a number after time remaining. I've been trying to look up answers but no luck. It's like the application has frozen, but I don't get the spinning rainbow and the force quit pop-up doesn't indicate that there are any problems. I've already tried updating, force quitting(that is the only way I can quit), deleting com.apple.iMovie.plist and relaunching the program, shutting down my computer, and now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any more trouble shooting tips?

    Hi
iMovie is an Non Destructive Video Editing application - and works like this
as an example: in Project's there are NO movie at all - just a text document pointing to where video, photos and Audio is stored and HowTo play it (parts of it) into the Movie You are making.
So if raw material is moved or if Library documents got corrupted - iMovie get's lost and can't save it self.
MY GUESS - is that iPhoto Library file got mixed up one way or another. So by forcing iPhoto to sort this out - usually helps. And You do this by (TAKES LOT'S of time - 6 to 12 hours most common to me)
    • Close all programs - and Mac till Turned OFF
    • Connect Mac to Mains/Mains adaptor (AS THIS TAKES TIME)
    • Start up Mac
    • Start iPhoto - BUT KEEP - alt- and cmd-keys down during full up-start.
    • SELECT All Options
    • Let Your Mac be - till done - NO surfing or any other background processes
    When done
    • Start iMovie and see if it now finds all parts.

Yes, it would if you ran it on the new MBP which is the reason I am saying install rather then clone.
If you clone then you are only getting the same code as the old MBP which probably will not have the correct drivers.

  • IPhoto needs to generate thumbnails, then freezes. What can I do?

When I open iPhoto, it says that it needs to generate thumbnails. As it does, popups say "Alert cannot find file." There are about one to two hundred of these popups, and they have two buttons: "Find file" and "cancel." A loading bar shows the progress, but it only advances when I click "cancel." After an infuriating twenty minutes, the status bar is finally complete, only to have iPhoto freeze. It cancels logout and shutdown; the only way to get out of it is to perform a cold stop. What can I do?
I should tell you that my photo library is enourmous. It has almost seven thousand high-quality photos and videos. Is this part of the problem?
    Thank you,
    MrMacMan1

Seven thousand photos is not a big library these days. We've seen reports from people with in excess of 300,000 images in their. I have a library more than 6 times the size of yours, so we can take it that the quantity is not an issue.
iPhoto is telling you what the problem is - it can't find the files that are meant to be in the Library.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
