IMovieHD & Panasonic GS250 & passthrough

Hello,
I have ...
an NV-GS250
an NV-S88 (super VHS C)
and also a Macbook Pro + iMovie HD v6
I have some footage on the S88 and using the passthrough functionality of the GS250 I want to be able to record into iMovie. I have got 2 cables connecting the cameras. The 1st is video, left and right (Yellow, White and Red phono connectors) to 3.5mm jack with 4 contacts. The phono's go into the S88 and the other goes into the GS250. 2nd cable is SVideo (I am using this since you get better video quality) each camera has SVideo sockets. I then connect the GS250 to my MBP using a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable.
I fireup the S88 and put it into VTR mode and cue up the tape, set the GS250 to Video Playback mode and set iMovie so that all I have to do is press the import button on the screen. At this point I should say that I have been able to hook up the GS250 straight to iMovie and import quite happily.
I press start on the S88 and I can now see video playback on the screen of the GS250, I then click the import button on iMovie.
It should then capture until I tell iMovie to stop BUT, I only get the first few frames and then iMovie stops importing.
Is anybody else out there using a similar setup? i.e. vid source then passthrough via a GS250 to iMovie. Am I doing something wrong?
It's really doing my head in. Thanks
Jonathon
PS: I have posted this question at http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t133524.html as well. There have been 2 answers but the last one is the most intriguing. It says turn of 'Device Controls' in iMovie? Is this possible?

Hey guys.
Just wanted to bring an update back here.
I currently have my new New Mac Book Pro and I'm running Final Cut Expres 4.0.
I'm well on the way to capturing 10+ hours of footage with my Pan. GS250 - the software picks it up just fine!
Thanks for your comments and input on this thread.
VTR OK
Cheers,
Dean

  • Fce capture camera turns off...frizbee for laptop?

hey all...just getting back into video after a while out and here's where the problem begins....
found a new camera, nice 3CCD, asked to film a campus promotional movie so found the 16:9 option and looks sweet, filmed a whole bunch now i'm trying to put it onto computer it's proving to be a slight worry, can i capture 16:9 dv into fce2?
i've found the anamorphic setting, not sure what one to use though so went with the 'DV-PAL Anamorphic' made a new sequence and opened the capture window pane and it showed up with a 'preview disabled' screen, the vertical color lines and all, pressed play on the screen (fingers crossed) and it sent the command to the camera and after a whole 0.5 of a second it switched the camera to stop without showing anything on the screen.
thought about the scratch disks and they're all going to the right place, my external hard drive, tried the capture now and setting the time codes and the capture clip buttons...tried a whole bunch of things but i cant make the camera keep playing.
if it's human error i can change (i hope haha) but is there something i'm missing? i've used the program before a lot, but only with importing 4:3 footage with my old camera through iMovie.(not sure why i used to do this...seemed to be the easiest option.)
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance, mark.

external hard drive with plenty of room.

Easy setup is HDV-1080i60 as it usually is. But on a whim I just tried switching the easy setup to NTSC and strangely, the capture worked. I looked at the footage on the camera and it clearly says HDV1080i, and I clearly remember shooting the footage in HD. Makes no sense...I guess I can capture it as DV use that, it's really no big deal, but just weird.

  • Pro Doesn't recognize Panasonic PV-GS250

I want to import movies created on my 3-chip Panasonic PV-GS250, but the MBP won't recognize the camcorder. No, it does not have firewire, but surely there must be a way using the USB cable! I don't want to spend hundreds more $$ for a new camera.
    Solution anyone?

    Welcome to the Forums!
No, it does not have firewire
Ummmm...it most certainly does!! And the FireWire connection is the best for digital video (USB can drop frames, FireWire won't). Admittedly, it's not called "FireWire" by Panasonic. You'll see terms like DV-Link, IEEE1394, etc. All are FireWire. All you need is a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire cable, plug the 4-pin (smaller end) into the camera (the port is marked DV), and the 6-pin end into your Mac. The camcorder should be set to playback mode not PC mode (and *this is important*, since in PC mode iMovie will see the camcorder but give a connection error, but with the camcorder in playback iMovie should detect it and control it - at least, it does for my PV-GS35).

  • Panasonic PV-GS250 used to work great with my MAC

In 2007 I purchased a a Panasonic Digital Camcorder (PV-GS250) and it worked like a dream with my Macbook Pro. Purchased an IMAC (Oct 07) with Leopard OS, the dream continued for both. I hadn't edited for a while and had a new project I was working on. As usual and it loaded like a dream, then my dream became a nightmare, because the playback was incredibly distorted. I don't know if any else has a similar problem but I need help. Not sure if a driver will fix it or what???? Any suggestions????

  • Panasonic SD700 Camcorder compatibility with iMovieHD

I am considering the purchase of a Panasonic SD700 Camcorder not just for the reported image quality but because it has sockets for an external mike and headset. My only remaining doubt is its compatibility with iMovieHD. Is is simply a case of transferring the SD card from the camcorder to my Mac or does the camcorder output have to be converted into an iMovieHD-compatible format? Help would be appreciated. Regards.

There have been a number of responses to my initial query but none seems to address it directly. I have both iMovie 09 and iMovie HD. The Panasonic model in which I am interested is the SD700 which only uses SD cards. I want to buy the most compatible camera possible to use with either of the above applications. I am trying to avoid having to do conversions to another format before I can edit. I am a newcomer to video & camcorders trying to avoid an expensive purchasing error. Further guidance would be appreciated and thanks to those who have contributed so far. Victor

  • Can't download movies from my Panasonic NV-GS250 to my iMac?

    Hi,
I have an oldish video camera and I don't seem to be able to download the movies from it.
I have purchased a DV (Firewire) cable and have connected it but the iMac doesn't seem to recognise the camera. I can't see it as an option in iMovie.
Any assistance would be great - thanks fro your time.

Have you got the camera in Tape Playback mode? Can't speak for the Panasonic, but my old Sony MiniDV Camcorder wouldn't get picked up in iMovie until I changed the camera mode. Try playing a tape with it all plugged in as well. Maybe the video signal coming down the DV cable will kick it into life.

  • Cannot get Panasonic MiniDV Camcorder to read on iMovieHD 6....help please

i have a new iMac and I didnt like the Life08...so i downloaded iMovieHD 6 and I connected my camcorder and it will not read it. I want to transfer video from it. I have a firewire and everything and it wont read

Yeah I hope it is the cable too but I have two of them and neither one worked. I do have a PC so I am gonna hook it up to the PC and see if it works on there. I think that would eliminate the possibilities of it being the camera and cord. Like you said, the computer being new I dont think its the firewire port because it works with my external hard drive. That only leaves it as a software issue, especially if it (camera) works with the macs at the store.

  • Any Panasonic PV-GS250 Users

I am thinking about the purchase of this camcorder and wonder i there is any problem using it with IMovie and the latest 10.4 OS. If anyone has actual experiemnce I would be most interested to get your feedback.

I've had the PV-GS200 for about 18 months now and have used it in a wide variety of settings. It links well with our iMac and iMovie. Pass through works fine. It does not do as well in very low light conditions as I had hoped, and often needs to be put in manual mode with manual white balance to provide good color.
Exporting photos to iPhoto also works well. This is done when the camcorder is in "PC" mode, and uses a USB cable.

  • Dowloading Panasonic VDR-D100 Camcorder to iMovieHD '06

Does any body know how I can download video recorded material from my D-VDR-D100 Camcorder to iMovie HD '06? No firewire. Has only USB

welcome ben to the  boards ...
your device is a DVDcorder, which isn't supported by iMHD≤6 ... needs to be, as Klaus allready stated, a firewire connected miniDV ..
    two options:
purchase iLife08 .. (be sure, your Mac fullfills hardware req.)
or, finalize disk in camera and search this board for 'DVD Import'.
If your device uses non-standarded sized disk, don't stick into slot-in drives!!!

  • VHS To iMovieHD using Song D8 Camcorder, Camera Recognised but No Picture

Apologies, it's an old topic I know.
I read through a number of threads and have a few ideas but wanted to post this as well.
I'm trying to setup a friend (87yo) to capture his old VHS tapes to iMovie HD by routing the signal through a Sony Digital8 camcorder, using it as an analogue/digital bridge.
The camera does do this. No problems there.
Plugged it all together. iMovie-HD recognises the camcorder but when we playback the VHS no image appears on the iMovieHD monitor.
Tested capture to iMovieHD with a tape in the D8 and that works Ok.
As my friend also has FCP3, (but finds it too hard to use), I tested capturing using FCP3. I set the capture device to "non-controlable device". This worked without a problem. The VHS signal was passed through the D8 camera into FCP3.
Tried iMovieHD again with no results. I get the feeling iMovie MUST have timecode when capturing.
My local Apple shop io running an ad for canopus "digital video convertors" which says "import straight into iMovie for editing", which isn't quiet "capture with iMovie".
I'm curious to know if you should be able to capture directly into iMovieHD this way or do you need 3rd party capture software, to capture the clips, which can then be imported into iMovieHD.
    Any assistance gratefully received.
    Meanwhile I'll keep looking.

    - Some analog to DV converters don't work in iMovie HD 5.0.2 like they do in iMovie 4.0.1.
    1. For example, my Sony TRV320 can convert analog video to DV in passthrough mode in iMovie 4.0.1, but not in iMovie HD 5.0.2. Reportedly neither Sony DVMC-DA1 converter's, or Sony DCR-PC110, Sony DCR-HC30E, Sony TRV-340E, Canon ZR80, Canon ZR200, Canon MV630i or Panasonic NV EX3 camcorders' analog to DV passthrough work in iMovie HD 5.0.2 like it does in iMovie 4.0.1.
Analog-to-DV workaround #1: Import using $20/40 BTV/BTV Pro or iMovie 4.0.1. Then import it to iMovie HD or, to save time and HD space, drop the .dv file in the Media-folder.
Analog-to-DV workaround #2: (This worked with my Sony TRV320 with iMovie HD 5.0.1 but not anymore with v5.0.2). Put a tape in the camcorder and press the camcorder's PLAY-button to play the tape in VTR mode (usually the tape must be OUT when doing analog-DV conversion!), then in iMovie hit the Import-button (so iMovie starts to import from the tape), then press the camcorder's STOP-button. iMovie should then continue importing from the analog source as usual.
I have reported these things many rains ago to Apple... <sigh>

  • Using iDVD project file after deleting original iMovieHD

I've been using iMovieHD and iDVD to convert my home movies from miniDV tapes to DVDs. I've been putting two one-hour tapes together into one iMovie and then creating an iDVD project with themes, chapters, etc.
Each two-hour iMovie file takes up >20 GB. Before I burned my DVD, the iDVD project file took up only a few MB. After I burned the DVD, the file size grew to >4 GB, so I figured (erroneously, it seems) that this new file package contained all of the information needed to keep burning DVDs. Threfore, I deleted the original massive iMovie file and kept only the iDVD project file.
Now every time I try to load the iDVD file, the program lists all the missing files and, other than my themes and chapter titles, there is nothing left of the original project.
Am I missing something here? What's taking up all that space (4 GB)? Am I completely screwed? Is the only way to make new copies of my project to copy the DVD that I made?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Jay,
As John has said, you should have created a Disc Image of your DVD project before deleting the iMovie file. When working in iMovie/iDVD you must not delete ANYTHING that is in the project, not even the iMovie trash can, which often mysteriously fills up with "stuff", until you are sure you are finished editing and then have saved a Disc Image to burn further DVD's from. The files you deleted from iMovie were the reference for the file you were using in iDVD. Without that iMovie file, your iDVD project will only show what was created there, like your theme page.
Sorry that's bad news. Your options now are re-create your iMovies from your tapes, OR, rip the DVD you have back to your Mac to burn more DVD's.

When i was trying import video to IMovie, iMovie told me "Error during Import" so how i understand, first i need to convert them??!!!! but for what format is better i don't know???? because i don't what to lost high quality and Large-format video. And which converter i should to use??!!!
Thank you so much in advance for any help if you can give me!
    PS: I have iMovieHD 6.0.3 (267.2)

If you can the video clips onto your computer you can use mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:

    which costs $25.

  • Panasonic camcorders in iMovie 11

I have purchased two Panasonic camcorders for school use, the X920 and the WA03. The former is for teacher use (and occasional responsible students) and the later for student use. We will do a technology segment teaching middle school and high school kids how to use the camcorders and edit. The students would need to edit on one of the (new) Mac Minis in one of the labs or classrooms. I have iMovie 11 and iMovieHD 6 on all mac minis plus a list of conversion programs like Handbrake and MPEG Streamclip as well as iDVD for an option for completing projects.
The X920 creates AVCHD and iFrame clips and the WA03 creates MPG and iFrame clips. I've spent the day learning iMovie 11 as my experience is in iMovieHD, Final Cut Express and I even cut my teeth on FCP 1 in 1999. I've enjoyed learning iMovie 11 today though I avoided the 2nd reincarnation of iMovie for years. Today I read some frustrations that people have had with iMovie 8,9,11 with "color banding" or posterization. Perhaps I shouldn't worry about it with school projects, but the shooting options are a bit overwhelming. Frame size, progressive or interlaced, MPEG vs AVCHD vs iFrame THEN iMovieHD vs iMovie 11 (the other techie teachers wants to use iMovie 11). (I didn't like the looks of interlaced video in iMovie 11 Monitor Window playback.)...(Some editors say "do not use H.264.)
It would seem that the easy answer is just go with iFrame and don't worry about ultimate footage quality and edit with iMovie 11 with or without reduction in quality issues. If you have any suggestions on a format to use in either camera and the editing software, fire away. I'm a listening ear...for now. : )
Hopefully I've covered all the important considerations for any kind replies.

well that might be a common problem with camcorders and programs. Don't worry about it, there are dozens of video converter on the Net to solve your problems.
I used this video converter a lot to convert camcorder videos to programs as well as mobile devices. Maybe you can try it as well. Here's the guide of it, please check. remember, just convert the videos to iMovie .mov and you can edit videos well with iMovie.
wish my suggestion would help and good lck to you!
