Impact on changing mode of /etc/hosts to 600(rw-------)

Hi all,
I have a customer who asked us the imapct on changing mode of /etc/hosts to 600(rw-------) to an IQ server.
They have to change the mode as above due to a guideline from Government.
Is it ok with an IQ server if we change hostname in all scripts, such as .odbc.ini, to ip address for the machine where the IQ server is running ?
1. Would you please let me know what kind of impacts would be expected if the customer change the mode of the /etc/hosts file ?
2. Are there any points we should consider ?
Any replies would be highly appreciated.
Regards.
Jerry

As long as gethostbyaddr() and gethostbyname() retrieve valid information for the local addresses, then you should be fine.  IQ does not parse /etc/hosts directly.
see the man pages of gethostbyaddr and gethostbyname for more details on how name/ip resolution occurs.

I have to change the mailhost entry to point to another host on a few machines. Ho can i bring sendmail to recognize this change, just simply svcadm restart sendmail ist not enough. I had a few systems in the past which I rebooted, so it worked, but a reboot is not an option for these systems.

  • /etc/hosts entries

Hi, I'm just starting to look at a 10.4.10 server (intel dual-core xenon). All this server does is run Zimbra. I've noticed the person who set it up made some changes to the /etc/hosts file and was wondering what effect these changes could have on the system. Here is the hosts file. I've also noticed that PID 0 kernel_task is running at about 75% CPU ALL the time!!
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 hostname.company.com mail.company.com localhost mail hostname
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    192.168.1.265 mail.comapny.com hostname.company.com localhost mail hostname
    Thanks for any help.
    Pat.

The first few lines of the hosts file should be...
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

  • Solaris10.. need to remove "::1 localhost" from /etc/hosts file

I know i have IPV6 disabled (through install options) but i still see "::1 localhost" entry in the /etc/hosts file.. This is related to localhost with IPV6 address ::1.. why it is still there.. what is it's impact.. how can i remove it if i decide to remove..
    Thanks, appreciate help.
    S.

It could be there if you linked /etc/hosts (or /etc/inet/hosts to /etc/inet/ipnodes). Or recreated the hosts-file from ipnodes (or it could be there by default and removed by my jumpstart, which means i would be unaware of it :-)
And no, you don't need it if you are not running IPv6, in fact removing it will eliminate a few error messages.
On all non-IPv6 systems i install i link /etc/inet/ipnodes to /etc/inet/hosts, in order to eliminate errors when changing IP addresses of the host and odd resolv-conflicts (which also removes any reference to ::1), and so far i have never experienced any issue with that.

  • /etc/hosts wiped out by installation of Leopard

Why is the /etc/hosts file deleted by installing Leopard?
Why do you have to be root to access this file even if you are Admin?
None of this happened with Tiger.

    Dan456 wrote:
My /etc/hosts file is rw-r--r-- root wheel so authentication is needed to write to it. I'd imagine the authentication is required so that trojan horse programs find it harder to perform DNS hijackings.
It may have been re-written on installing Leopard to get it into a known good state. If you edit it again your changes will probably stay.
    Welcome to the Apple boards:
The OP indicated he could not access the file at all. Yes, writing has always required admin permissions (sudo or su) but the file can be accessed in a read-only mode.
Since I update my hosts file off and on, I always keep a backup and if the file ever does get trashed, I simply use my backup as I indicated.
    My hosts reads:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 434538 Aug 24 2007 hosts
and that proves that Leopard did not overwrite it. Leopard did not come out until October.
So the OP has a separate problem. Leopard does not touch the existing hosts file.

  • /etc/hosts file

Here's what mine has in it:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
(Remove the space at the beginning of each line. I had to add those to keep the board software from scrambling the content.)
    Here are it's permissions settings:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 236 Jun 23 2009 /etc/hosts
I wasn't watching you type, so I don't have any idea what you did to delete that. In Terminal the history command will show you a large number of the last commands you typed. Perhaps that will give you a clue.

  • Message Server Unreachable (after changing IP address at host)

    Hi guys,
I changed the IP address in my server. According to note 403708, I updated the new IP address in /etc/hosts. The note also suggests me to change in /etc/services but I see no IP address for me to update.
Later when I restart my sapinstance, I see the disp+work.exe is "Running, but Message Server Unreachable". I've also updated the IP address in SM59 but I see no change.
This is what I got from dev_rfc.trc:
    ERROR file opened at 20071206 221839, SAP-REL 620,0,674 RFC-VER 3 549374 MT-SL
    T:5048 Error RFCIO_ERROR_MESSAGE in abrfcio.c : 1400
    T:5048 <* RfcDispatch [1] : returns 1:RFC_FAILURE
This is what I got from dev_disp:
    WARNING => DpNetCheck: NiAddrToHost(1.0.0.0) took 5 seconds
***LOG GZZ=> 1 possible network problems detected - check tracefile and adjust the DNS settings [dpxxtool2.c  3212]
    Anyone has any idea?

Yes I'm on Windows, the path that i'm refering is:
    winnt/system32/drivers/etc/services
    winnt/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
Anyway my prob is fixed now. Probably the problem is due to I did not restart the server after changing the IP. Anyway everything looks pretty fine now
    Thanks guys

  • Change the Sold to Party(SP) in sales order in change mode

    Hi,
Is it possible to change the Sold to Party(SP) in sales order in change mode?
    If yes then How??
    Regards
    Somnath

    Hi somnath,
It is very much possible to change the sold-to-party in the change mode of Sales order(VA02).
Goto VA02-->enter the sale order number.
    Press enter.
In the overview screen if you change the sold-to-party then every thing will be redetermined(Taxes and pricing procedure etc...).These will be determined from CMr etc.
You cannot change the sold-to-party at the partners tab that is present in the Header details.
    It will be greyed out.
If you change the sold-to-party at the overview screen as suggested earlier it will not apply to the item.
You are also going to see this message while changing.
    And finally save the document.
    Regards,
    Krishna.

  • The new entries made in /etc/hosts file is not picked up by Weblogic.

    Hi All,
I have come across a scenario where i have changed the IP address of a particular host name (which was already present in etc/hosts) to point to a new IP address.
After i did this change, when i do a telnet test to the same hostname, i can see it is getting connected to the new IP to which i changed. But my service which is deployed on weblogic 10.0 still keeps sending requests to the old IP which i commented in the etc/hosts file instead of the new IP address.
My question is will weblogic cache the data in etc/hosts file somewhere?
    Thanks in anticipation..
    Madhu

Application deployed on weblogic server will pick the IP address of the server on which the application is deployed .
IP address or listen address for weblogic server can be configured in 3 different ways :
Listen Address : Blank --- This means that the server will listen to all the interfaces available on the Machine .
Listen Address : IP address or Hostname --- The server will listen only to the specified IP address or the hostname .
Listen Address : : localhost --- The server will be listening only on localhost address and will not be accessible remotely .
Please check what it the listen address specified at you end.
    Thanks,
    Sandeep

  • Blocking Ad servers via etc/host file not working

In Snow Leopard I add a list of ad servers and direct them to 127.0.0.1 via the /ect/host file.
I've configured the host file on my mac mini server and it doesn't work.
i just want to block ads when using browsers ON the Mini.
    How can I achieve this?

Yeah; that's an old-time Windows and Unix hack.
There are ad-blocking extensions for all major web browsers, and those are easier to manage and maintain.
Off the top, I'd have to check the search order to see if I was getting a response from remote DNS or from /etc/hosts here.
If you're running a Mac OS X Server box, you're hopefully also running DNS services, and if you're running DNS services, then that's going to be where this hackery gets implemented. Add bogus zones. And if DNS gets an answer from its cache, I wouldn't tend to expect it to go read /etc/hosts (for performance reasons), for that matter.
There may well be an ad-blocking DNS server around you can forward queries to, too; I haven't looked for that.
If you make changes to your local /etc/hosts setup, try issuing the following to clear the cache:
    dnscacheutil -flushcache
I'd recommend installing an ad-blocker. /etc/hosts is an old-school approach and can end up causing weirdnesses on errors, particularly if your box is (also) a DNS server for your LAN. (Also realize that Apple isn't documenting the /etc/hosts file in the Mac OS X Server 10.6 networking manual.)

  • What are the impacts of changing material group of a Material ?

    Hi,
Could some one tell me in detail about the impacts of changing material group of a material that is active in procrement?
    Thanks,
    Veera

    Hi,
If you are changing it from one valid group to another valid group and both will still be there afterwards, then the impact is small, but important.
The data in the Info systems and BW etc. will have been updated with the the "old" material group and so if you tried to compare them you would find differences.
It is something that does happen from time to time and as long as the two groups will still be ther afterwards there should be no reason why this would cause any technical or system problems. The effect is purely on the historic data.
I have seen this done several times in many implementations and so far it has not caused any major problems apart from some reports "appearing" wrong if you compare them against other reports that involve historical movements.

  • /etc/hosts Prank Gone Wrong, need help restoring files to original

Some friends were messing around on my computer and playing a joke on me
using the sudo pico /etc/hosts command they were able to send me from sites I wanted to visit, like facebook, to sites I didnt want to visit..
    what they wrote was:
    67.55.108.167 facebook.com
    67.55.108.167 www.facebook.com
I have since deleted it but the every time I go to facebook from another sight I am still redirected. The odd part is that I can go to facebook, but only after ive been redirected. What I mean is, I try to go to facebook, get redirected, then try to go to facebook right away. If I do that it works fine. Also Safari is the only internet browser that is effected. Opera and Firefox are both un effected. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling safari as well as using the same command as they did, but in reverse. Still no luck. Any suggestion? Unfortunately they didnt back up the /etc/hosts before they edited it

You might also want to flush your DNS cache
    dscacheutil -flushcache
    Also make that password change.
Look in System Preferences -> Accounts to see if your friends added any new admin accounts or granted an existing account admin access.
If they know how to create ssh-keygen keys, they could have deposited a key in your /private/var/root/.ssh/authorized_keys2 file.
There are any number of additional tricks they could have done, if they had admin access. I'm just scratching the surface.
If you do trust these friends, then most likely they just played with /etc/hosts. If they are the kind of friends that get malicious, I would consider the "nuke and pave" reinstall.

  • /etc/hosts site blocking

In windows and linux I can block sites by adding the domain to /ect/hosts and pointing to loaclhost eg
    127.0.0.1 blockthis.com
Anyone know how to get this to work in Tiger
    thanks

Exactly the same in OS X. There is a hosts file located in the /etc/ directory. Open the Terminal application (Utilities folder) and at the prompt enter:
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
You will be asked to authenticate with your admin password which will not be echoed.
When the editor opens the files simply enter the sites you wish to block using the format you posted: 127.0.0.1 block.site.com.
Enter each desired site on a separate line. When finished press CTRL-X. You will be prompted to save changes. Respond "y". You will be prompted again to save the filename, respond "y". Pico will quit. You can verify your changes by entering:
    cat /etc/hosts
This will list the contents of the hosts file.
Note that underlying OS X is a Unix operating system, so most anything you know how to do in Linix is done the same way in OS X, except that access must be through the Terminal application.
