Impact on physcial machines and network when running Capacity Planner.

I need to find a white paper or an app note that explains how Capacity Planner collects data from physical machines.  I seem to have been pulled into the middle of a squabble between IT staff members that has the manager halting a virtualization project.  I have a virtual server running the Collector for Capacity Planner for 157 machines discovered in the customers network.  The Collector has been working fine, I am getting the inventory data I need to get on all systems except one.  At the request of the customer, I disabled the host name mask so we could see real host names in the report.  I also disabled the WMI checking since it only worked on half of my customers machines.  Using the Registry setting has gotten the inventory on all machines except one.  This one machine (an email server) has very strict administration control that is preventing the Collector service user from connecting.  When my contact and I tried to gain the needed access, our project was halted because the email server admin report an enormous amount of connection attempts from the Collection server that caused an issue with the mail server (was never able to get specifics on the issue).  This caused the manager to error on the side of caution and halt the project since the mail server admin believed the Collector caused his server issues.  My contact and I will be removing the mail server from the virtualization project, but to get the manager to allow the project to continue, I need to put something in her hands that explains how the Collector is getting it's data.  I have tried my self explaining it, but she is insisting on something from VMWare that explains how the collector is getting the data.  I know it is active collection, and as far as I know it just uses the built in WMI or Remote Registry services to request monitoring data that causes no impact to system performance.  I will be searching for an app note or a white paper or a KB article today, I would greatly appreciate if someone already knows of something that can settle this argument for me and help me get this project back on track.
thank you

Almost same setting here, same troubles.
If I restart them via Screen Sharing via the Restart Button on the Login Window, they sometimes show up correctly. But this is way too annoying.

  • Lost Time Machine and Network when Network Cable Unplugged Briefly

    Hi,
I rearranged my desk and unplugged time machine (airport) from my network. When I plugged it back in it had gone to default settings with no sign of my previous network. I had to set up a whole new network and set up time machine as if it was new. When I finished and opened time machine I can see the previous files I had saved on it (by creating folders on it- something I won't mess with again), but have no idea where all the backups are. It still had all my default info on it (It new it's name but no sign of my previous network). Fortunately I just bought a new macbook pro so I'd already duplicated my data and I don't need the backups but is there a way to redirect time machine so it sees them? It also used to say that it was full and now the light is green and no warning about being out of space and overwriting my old files. I'm afraid to mess with it.
What happened? Anyone else experience this?

    I'm very confused.
Some of this may be terminology problems:
*+Time Machine*+ is Apple's software that performs backups.
An +*Airport Extreme+* is a wireless router that you can connect a USB drive to.
A *+Time Capsule+* is Apple hardware combining a wireless router and HD.
In one place you say you'd set up Time Machine, but in another you mention creating folders on "it" (I'm not sure what "it" is).
Could you clarify your setup please?

  • Brand New Machine and Photoshop CS6 running very slow

I just installed Photoshop CS6 on my new Machine and it is running horrible. Moving around objects, turning effects on/off, zooming, and more all take for ever to render.  I can not figure out why. I have updated video card drivers and more. Scratch Disk is set to a second disk and messed with all of the GPU settings. Only photoshop runs bad on this machine. I should not be having issues with the system. Below is the system info from Photoshop. Also this machine is running with two SSD drives which should make PS run even faster.

Tried Photoshop at all sorts of various settings including default. All with the D drive being used for the Scratch disk. Working on the similar size file described above. The file I am working on now is 4000 x 4800 pixels, CMYK, 8 bit depth.  Photoshop is slow selecting layers with auto select, very slow when moving layers around the Canvas, and slow rendering the Canvas when zooming in and out. This document also has about  30 layers and is 80mg.
I only use the 64 bit version of Photoshop these days. Also all three monitors are set at 60 Hertz. Photoshop is closed and reopened upon all changes.
I use to be a Photoshop Certified Expert in CS3 so I am extremely familar with the product. I am just stumped.

  • Time machine and network Lacie drive

    Hi,
I have an network Lacie drive (1GB) that I just connected to my local network. I started the time machine, and after a few minutes I get this error message:
"The backup disk image "/Volumes/openshare/Peter Lauri's MacBook.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)."
Anything I can do about this? Anyone that has a Time Machine setup working with Lacie drive or other network drive?
    /Peter

    Hi V.K.-
I have a 2TB Lacie 2Big NAS drive, hooked to a Linksys router, that I thought (based on this forum) would not work with Time Machine. Last night, I found in the "share" properties, a box to check to make it the "share" compatible with Time Machine. I checked the box and Time Machine recognized the NAS drive "share" and was able to use it with no issues (so far) - I have my mac tied to the router with an ethernet cable. Lacie explicitly says on its product info page that this drive is "compatible with Time Machine" and it appears it is...
So, are "compatibile with" and "supported" different?
yes, they are. supported are the devices that are officially supported by apple and are guaranteed by apple to work for TM backups. that btw includes working now and also in the future after any possible updates to time machine. anything else you may want to use for TM backups apple makes no promises about. if you run into problems with such devices- you are on your own as far as apple is concerned.
now, all that said, there are a few 3rd party NAS devices that came out relatively recently (that includes your Lacie NAS) that claim to support TM backups. they have no blessings from apple to say such things but TM does seem to work and work quite well with such devices. for example, I don't think I've heard any complaints about problems with your Lacie NAS model as a TM drive.
so that's how things stand. AFAIK, the reason why some NASes work and others don't with TM are mostly technical and have to do with whether or not a particular NAS model implements all the features of afp that TM needs to work correctly.

  • [SOLVED]hal and network not running on boot

My hal and network are not running on boot.  I have to manually start them once I login.  I have put them as Daemons in rc.conf and it still does not seem to help.
    Thanks!
    Last edited by Eman2005 (2010-02-06 00:42:29)

I figured out what was wrong, the D in Daemons for the rc.conf file was a lowercase d for whatever reason.  But now I have a bigger problem, I seem to have lost the files for my sound card.  I used to have the soundcard listed in alsamixer.  Now it is not there.  when I do a
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
it is not listed, although it used to.  however I can still
    modprobe snd-emu10k1
It is the Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1  I have tried to reinstall alsa.  I reinstalled alsa-utils and alsa-oss, but I am not sure how to uninstall alsa-lib because of dependencies.  PLEASE HELP.

  • IPhone drops network when running maps/gps!!

I have a Verizon iPhone 4S and ive recently noticed that when im running google maps or anything that requires a gps lock, my iphone's signal drops. I get a searching message And loose my connectivity. If i leave maps running in the background and try to place a call, my phone drops the call and looses signal. I understand that i can't talk and surf at the same time. But i when running any app that requires a gps signal my phone looses all connection. I cannot place a call cause it drops the signal. The only way for me to place a call is to close maps all together. Faulty gps chip?!! Phone has been restored and called verizon to reactivate my phone. No difference. Help!!

    One more update:
No help from the Genius Bar.  They wanted to swap the phone, but I couldn't see the logic in it, based on having read reports on here of others with the same problem.  I don't think it's a hardware issue.
So, last night, I disabled Siri, and a couple of the other non-critical Location Services features, and while that didn't seem to fix it last night, this morning everything is working properly (minus Siri).  That's new behavior, considering that I didn't have to do a system restore to toggle the behavior.
I expect a new version of iOS 5.x will be coming soon...

  • Error when opening Capacity Planner and Performance Manager

    Hello,
I am having an error when opening Performance Manager or Capacity Planner under 9i OEM in our environment. I started at the company about 2 months ago, and have not used these tools until yesterday - and just found these errors. Below is a link to a screenshot of the errors. Does anybody have any ideas?
    http://www.webgenstudios.com/misc_images/ora1.jpg
    Thanks,
    -Bob

Which are the contents of the log file produced during installation of OEM...????
OEM was installed on its host machine about 4 years ago, long before I started with this company. I don't know if the logs are still there or not. Where should I be looking?
Do all other parts of OEM operate successfully...????
Yes, everything besides Cap Planner & Perf Mgr.
Is this in Standalone Mode or Oracle Management Server Mode?
The issue occurs in both modes.

no crash ids since this is version 3.6, the only version that doesn't crash, and I have to use Firefox for work stuff.
I have submitted over a hundred crash reports and included my email, but no one has ever contacted me with any help. This has been going on for weeks. I have been forced to use an outdated version of FF because no one has bother to get back to me. I would be happy to update to 14 and start the crash cycle again if someone wants to give me some suggestions I haven't tried already.
BTW, no font conflicts or RAM problems, (someone else's issue)

Maybe you did't understand my previous statement. There are no crashes in FF 3.6, There is no previous evidence FF 14 was ever here, I completely uninstalled all trace of Firefox, no app data, no preferences, no cache. I will upgrade to FF14 so I can send IDs,
    so here ya go.

Hi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13150366#13150366
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21110132#21110132
So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22521574#22521574
In the case your discrete GPU survived and is not permanently damaged, I personally had success by changing the thermal compound myself, which completely fixed the problem (at least for now). I've posted about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22630561#22630561
I hope you can find a solution, believe me I know the feeling when you see your expensive machine turning into a brick and it *****.
    Good luck!

  • Time Machine and Networked external hard drive

My family has thee macs and one PC, all under the same roof. All the Macs are 2008 and later models (MacBooks and MacBook Pros, with Leopard or Snow Leopard).
I lost a load of data last weekend and my i-disk did not contain a backup of all the data, pics etc lost which came as a nasty shock. Bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted, I've bought a Western Digital 1TB external hard disk and connected it to the USB 2 port on my linksys Gigabit N+ router. This network device does appear in my list of shared devices and I can manually copy and paste data to it, but Time Machine doesn't seem able to see the device to enable me to automate the backup process.
I've looked for relevant posts on this forum but can't see quite the thing, can you help me please?
What if anything can I do to get Time Machine to do automated backups and can this be done via the network router to enable others in the family to do likewise?

To expand a bit on one of the options Kappy mentions, if one of your Macs is stationary, you can back up over your local network to a shared drive connected directly to it. See #22 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
It's "iffy" and not supported by Apple, but some are able to back up to a USB drive connected to a recent-model Airport Extreme. See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. As mentioned there, don't depend on those 100%; also maintain some sort of secondary backups, in addition.
But that's something I learned (the hard way, of course) long ago: Airport or not, never trust your backups to a single app or piece of hardware. No app is perfect, and no hardware is trouble-free indefinitely.
Or, you may be able to find an alternative app that will back up to your setup. See Kappy's post on +Basic Backup,+ complete with links to the web sites of each product.

  • Time machine and network file server

    Hi,
Is it possible to set up the time machine to a network file server which my macbook is able to see and use? Right now, time machine is limited to be used with a delicated external HD or another Mac...
It would be convenient to share files between my 1st mac and other windows PCs.

    armyedwrd wrote:
I believe I can do a work around by simply sharing my External HD so that that can happen. It's just very awkward to navigate to that shared drive each time we access it. If I had separate backup HDs for each MAC, I think I could use the TC as a media server (at least that's what I get from the marketing material here ).
You might want to try one of the workarounds in #Q3 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
Have you ever used Time Machine Editor? Is it worth downloading and using?
It's not recommended;  Time Machine usually works best the way it was designed.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #13.

  • Query that becomes slower and slower when runned several times

    Hi everybody,
I have an issue with one querie...
I have a select that is a join between 3 subqueries, 2 of them are using a function with pipeline.
When I run this query it work fine.
    * First run lasts less than 1 sec.
    * Second run lasts less than 1 sec.
    * Third run lasts 2 sec.
    * Fourth run lasts 2 min.
    * Fifth run lasts 10 min.
    * ... and then worse an worse...
Of course, I always use same bind variables and data within the database does not change.
I looked at the execution plan that seems to be the same for all the runs.
The problem is during the Execute phase :
    for the first run :
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 0.20 0.20 0 1215 0 0
    Fetch 3 0.12 0.14 0 246 0 19
    total 5 0.33 0.36 0 1461 0 19
Misses in library cache during parse: 1
Misses in library cache during execute: 1
    Optimizer mode: ALL_ROWS
    Parsing user id: 66
    for the fifth run
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.01 0.01 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 95.29 100.96 0 1215 0 0
    Fetch 3 0.27 0.39 0 246 0 19
    total 5 95.57 101.36 0 1461 0 19
Misses in library cache during parse: 1
Misses in library cache during execute: 1
    Optimizer mode: ALL_ROWS
    Parsing user id: 66
I didn't find dynamic sampling during the execution plan.
All subqueries are very stable in time.
When the join query starts to have a strange behavior, subqueries are still very perfomant !
If I flush the shared pool, the problem disappear and the cycle restarts...
    1) any idea of the root cause of the issue ?
    2) is there a solution (with hint for instance) for not recording the query inthe shared pool ?
    Thanks in advance...
    The query is :

    Hi Nikolay
Concerning point 2, the database seems perfectly OK and I encountered an issue only with this query :-(
The database is hosted on a dedicated server and I am the only one user. Moreover the issue is reproducible as I want... Very strange for me...
I am very interested on a method to check waits and more precisely IO waits. Can you describe me a procedure ?
The only one thing I can produce is the tkprof output focused on the fifth run that is very long...

  • Errors on an executable (and not when running during the development process) J1939 related

I've got the J1939 protocol up and running on
Labview 8.5... though when I create an executable it gives me these
    following errors upon start-up...see jpg.
Is this related to something I need to include withint the Build? or Installer?
Also, why is it that when I go to include the NI 2.6.3 CAN installer within the Installer EXE, that it asks for a CRIO disk?
    Thanks...

    Hey Jonathanupr,
It looks to me like you did not configure your LabVIEW Executable's build specifications appropriately.  Please go back and check the specifications to make sure that you've included your higher-level VI and all of the sub-VIs used in the J1939 protocol download (I'm assuming you downloaded the libraries from our website) in the project.  Then, within your Build Specification, make sure your higher-level VI is included in the Startup VIs section on the Source Files tab and the J1939 library files are included in the "Always Included" portion of the Source Files tab.
If your CAN driver is asking for the cRIO disk, it could be associating that with the original download location of the driver.  You could try first uninstalling the driver, then download the driver to a location on your hard disk (either from our website or from your CD).  After installing the driver from a hard-disk location, the driver should no longer be associated with a CD, but with the location on your hard disk.
Here are two KnowledgeBase Articles that talk about this issue.
