Impact on SharePoint if we rename AD Domain.

Hi all..
I was researching a lot these days on steps needed to rename Active Directory Domain from ABC.com to ABCD.com, and the impact it will have on SharePoint Farm.
Could someone please help me with the approach needed (from SharePoint Perspective)

if you follow the proper steps then it is fine but if you miss new accounts in new domain or migrate user messed then you will be in big trouble. Big issue i.e user getting access denied, User not found, login failed etc
here are the steps.
1 - Shutdown all of the SharePoint services
2 - Migrate the servers to the new domain

Rename of Domain Controller

Hi,
We want to upgrade our Domain Controller from windows 2003 server to windows 2008 server. And our SAP servers are Local Domains(member servers) on windows 2003 server and we do not want to upgrade Operating System of the SAP servers. The SAP servers are the members of the Domain Control.
My Question is after rename and Upgrade of Our Domain Controller from Windows 2003 server to Windows 2008 server. Does it impact at Operating system level,SAP level and Oracle database level like Users, RFC and etc. And if it impacts then, How it impacts. What precautions have to be taken.

No.
SAP system don't run on domain controllers. Windows doesn't find its logon servers by hostname but by quering the DNS/LDAP of the domain. The procedure is described here:

If the domain server changes (because the current server is shut down) the system queries for another one. Since there is no more hierachies in AD 2003 it does not impact at all as long as at least one DC is availalble to authenticate.

How do i rename Domain Controller name in Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2

Just be sure that all the applications you have installed in your domain can also work after a domain rename. I don't know if it is still the case (my guess is that it is), but it used to be that you could not rename a domain if Exchange was installed
in the domain. Renaming a domain is not like renaming a server. There are a lot of things tied into that domain and you need to ensure that everything you have installed in the domain will work properly after renaming the domain. In other
words, I hope you have a good lab that has your production environment replicated so you can test things there before actually renaming the production environment.

Sharepoint 2013 server dropped off domain and readded

I My sharepoint 2013 server dropped off the domain (still trying to figure out why) so I added it back onto the domain. The problem now is alot of the services aren't showing under "Manage services on server", in fact I only have 7 services (Application
Discovery, Distributed Cache, Lotus Notes, Machine Translation, Foundation Timer, Powerpoint COnversion, Word Automation. I am able to navigate around my intranet site but I cannot access mysites or the userprofile service application.
Error when accessing userprofile service app:

HI,As you said Its dropped off from domain meaning it already disconnected the connection from AD.Thats why UPA is not working.Once the server is added back to Domain,The UPA will not connect to automatically.So iwould suggest to create the UPA connections
again and crawl the Import.Check the below link on the issue with UPA.

Need help with a simple Rename/Join Domain/Install SCCM Client Task Sequence

Good morning everyone,
I need to create a very simple task sequence that will run an .exe that we have created that renames the computer based on a prefix-serialnumber...then restarts, adds it to our domain, restarts, and then installs the SCCM client.
1) run rename program
2) join to domain
3) install sccm client
Can someone help me with the steps that will be required for this?

**note, these will not be formatted/have an OS installation ran on it with this task sequence. The situation is that we are receiving 400+ custom configured laptops, and we're going to have to rename/join/install sccm on each...trying to simplify

Narcoticoo : Which boot image am i supposed to be using to insure that it boots into Standard Windows, NOT WinPE? I have a standard x86 package / boot image i've been using. If it boots up with this, it goes into WinPE (correct me if I'm wrong,
for this seems to be what happens each time it boots off the boot image...it does not go into windows standard/full)
When I go into properties of the one i'm using, and take the check off of "Use a boot image", where it will not boot to WinPE, it will not even show up in my list of available task sequences for
1) when I PXE boot to try the task sequence, or
2) when I try to make stand-alone media for this task sequence as you have suggested

Save .PDF back to SharePoint, Acrobat is renaming files

My problem is that Acrobat is renaming and also creating a new PDF file with both a random filename, when I save a .PDF file witch is checked out in SharePoint.
I'm trying to find a way around the problem that we cannot save a .PDF file back to SharePoint. Because Adobe Acrobat cannot handle Webdav, I’m glad that Microsoft SharePoint haves a build-in features that enables us to open files in explorer, just like you access a network dive. So I`m using this option to open a .PDF file and save it back to SharePoint.
This all works but only when a file is not checked out in SharePoint. When a file is checked out (by me) and I save the file. Acrobat gives me the error: “The document could not be saved. Cannot save to this filename. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder.”. It then first creates a new file with the name “aaa04588” (without the .PDF extension). And then it renames the original file to “aab04588”.
The file “aaa04588” contains all the changes I have made. The file “aab04588” is the same (old) file and is still checked out (by me).
I have no clue what Acrobat is trying to do.
When a file in SharePoint is checked-out by another user, adobe acrobat gives me the nice notice “There was an error opening this document. Lock violation.”. It then refuses to show me the document, where I would expect to open in read only mode.
I have tried to simulate this with other programs, but they all handle correctly by just overwriting the file or open in read only mode. This is also what I expect.
I`m using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, version 9.3.3. I have tested It on MOSS 2007 and SharePoint 2010.
I hope someone could help me find the problem that causing this.

There is also a free plugin for Acrobat called “Swiftwriter” from the company omtool. The disadvantage of this plugin is that it does not remember from where the .PDF file is opened. Therefor you need to click trough the complete SharePoint sites and lists to save your work back to SharePoint.

Adding a 2nd SharePoint 2013 Farm to the domain

hello.
in my production domain environment i have a SharePoint farm consisting on a single SQL server and a SharePoint server, sadly this has a few underlying issues, so in isolation i have built a new FARM and now want to migrate it into the production domain,
but i still want the other FARM operational for now so users can continue to use it.
i need to configure some exchange integration, external web access and HTTPS for the new environment i just want to check that the farms wont interact with each other and its safe to do this?
the only issue i can see is that central admin has the same web URL on both farms, would it be best to change the URL via AAM on the new environment so not to cause a conflict?

also the servers are an early version of the production system (originally built on a server with VM workstation and migrated to ESXI host thus they were left over in a functional state) i am using these because its significantly faster than building a whole
new farm from scratch, i have transferred the WSS_Content DB to it, its all work now but sadly share the same names and ip's as the production system.
how can i change the server names and IP's on the new systems so not to break SharePoint.

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to set the firewall exception for SQL server.
Domain profile—This profile is active when the server is connected to an Active Directory (AD) domain via an internal network. This is the profile that's typically active, because most servers are members of an AD domain.
Private profile—This profile is active when the server is a member of a workgroup. Microsoft recommends more restrictive firewall settings for this profile than for the domain profile.
Public profile—This profile is active when the server is connected to an AD domain via a public network. Microsoft recommends the most restrictive settings for this profile.

What is impact on SharePoint farm , if we reset the SharePoint Cache from Cache.ini file?

Just recreate your sharepoint timer job files. All these timerjob are actually stored on database but for performance, they are pulled over to SP server and executed from local server.
No impact unless and until you set the cache.ini value to 0 everytime the folder is clean.
Yes it is safe to perform this in production.
Note: Make sure time service is top, cache.ini value to 0 everytime the folder is clean, then delete file, then start the timerjob service. If you dont see the files getting created, you need to troubleshoot on your timerjobs.

Rename a domain?

Anyone know if it's possible to rename a logical domain without destroying/recreating it?
Even with that method, it seems it's impossible to rename the "primary" domain to any other name.
We'd really like to name the domains with the same name as the host running in them -- even the control and I/O domains. We envision an environment with multiple LDOM host system, so it would be nice to have the name of the control domain reflect which physical piece of hardware things are running on.

No there is currently no other solution than destroy/create the domain to rename it,
and it is not possible to rename the primary domain.

I don't think there is an automated procedure for that.
probably the safest way is to create a new domain - in any case you should have scripted the creation of all the resources, so it should be fairly easy.
Otherwise, export a domain template and use it to create a new domain should also work.
Changing manually the files (domain name should be hardcoded in config.xml and some .sh files) could be problematic for the encryption of passwords, I am afraid that your SerializedSystemIni.dat might not work any more.

Migrating multiple domains with same name - how? Rename? Migrate through temporary domain?

Hi,
we have acquired another company, and they have multiple, separate domains with the same name (every site has a domain with NetBIOS name "COMPANY" and DNS name "company.local"). Now we want to migrate all these domains into ours using
ADMT.
Unfortunately, we did not manage to migrate one of these domains completely, so the trust must remain established for some time. But we have to continue with the second domain - which normally would require a trust, but of course we can't establish a trust
to two domains with the same name at the same time.
I found two potential solutions for the dilemma, but I'm not sure if both are reasonable:
1) Rename the domain with RENDOM.EXE to COMPANY2 and company2.local and then migrate with ADMT
2) Migrate COMPANY to a temporary domain such as COMPANYTEMP and then migrate from COMPANYTEMP to our domain
Given that there are roughly 100 users, 2 domain controllers and 8 other servers, what would be the better approach? Is option 2 possible at all, so would I be able to use the sidHistory attribute migrated from the original COMPANY domain in our domain at
all?
There is also an Exchange 2007 server, which seems to make option 1 impossible unless we find another way to migrate it (like, export all mailboxes to PST before migration) ...

Ok, that's what I expected. Still, I have servers in the old domain, so if I do these steps:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
create trust between COMPANYTEMP -
COMPANY(Right)
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
disconnect the domain COMPANY(right) ,
users will lose connectivity to any servers in the domain. I understand that it does not work with all domains connected? Of course I can't make OURCOMPANY's domain controllers see the DCs of COMPANY (right) in DNS (though I could achieve it the other way
round).
My original plan was:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
create trust between COMPANYTEMP -
COMPANY(Right)
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
create trust between OURDOMAIN and COMPANYTEMP
then do the migration with sidHistory from

Migrate users

But I see that this will not work out, right? So, my only option would be:
first create a new temporary domain i.e COMPANYTEMP and
create trust between COMPANYTEMP -

then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANY(right) --> COMPANYTEMP ,
Migrate computers and servers to COMPANYTEMP
Install new Exchange server in COMPANYTEMP
migrate mailboxes to COMPANYTEMP
disconnect / abandon COMPANY(right)
create trust between OURDOMAIN and COMPANYTEMP
then do the migration with sidHistory from COMPANYTEMP
--> OURDOMAIN,
Migrate users
Migrate computers
Migrate servers
Migrate mailboxes
remove trusts and old domain
And to minimize user impact, all this would have to be done in one go (over night), which is hardly possible .........................

Domain Rename

Am planning to migrate my domain from a single label domain CONTOSO to FQDN CONTOSO.COM, I would your advise on the impact of this change to my SQL services and the application using the SQL instances. Will all the services resume as normal once all machines
pick the same new domain? Are there things you would recommend I take care of before and after rename?

Hi Meshack KE,
According to your description, you rename the domain name, if remove the SQL Server from the old domain and join it to the new domain, you want to verify if it will impact on the SQL Server . There are some notes which you should consider.
Check the properties on the SQL server to find out what login account it is using for one thing.
Check jobs set up to run under domain logins, so those need to be checked.
You may have database mail configuration issues if it is set to use a mail server on the domain you're leaving.
Also there may be proxies set up to run jobs that will have to be accounted for.
Finally, there may be DOMAIN specific logins as objects in the database.
check on also on the SQL machine under services if you are using any domain user name for running those SQL services.
if you can, I recommend you build a new SQL Server and join it to the new domain by the following post.
