Implementing MVC with menus

Hi, I'm trying to implement a menu bar with menus and submenus, all of which contain only basic JMenuItems (i.e., no checkboxes, radiobuttons, etc.). The twist here is I'd like to use MVC (Model-View-Controller), where there is a "menu model" to handle updates, similar to JTree with an underlying TreeModel.
May I know if someone has already implemented this before, or know of a framework for this? I've googled using the keywords menu, jmenubar and model, but without any luck...

I notice that Java has a lot of pre-defined interfaces and abstract classes for things I'd usually go ahead and write myself in other languages. To avoid wasting time re-inventing the wheel which of the commonly used patterns below already provide the necessary interfaces? :)

How to implement MVC model?

Hi, I have a question on how to implement MVC model, that is, how will the GUI be informed that the data from the Model has been changed?
Suppose that I have two simple classes, Model and GUI. Model creates 10 integers each time, and then GUI draws some bars whose height is the integers. then after each time the integers has been created, how could GUI know?

Fair enough. Yes, as far as I know those implementation classes aren't available. Contacting Sun's consulting services is one option, of course. Make sure you get someone who has actual experience with the classes in question, rather than just anyone who happens to be on the bench right now, 'cos they'll charge you handsomely either way.
I take it you've considered decompiling the classes in question ? Obviously there are legal issues to consider if you go that route, but I've found the Kaffe tool handy before now.

The only other thing I can think of is taking a dig around the IBM site to see if any of their equivalent classes are available in source form. I've always used the Sun versions, however, so I've no idea how likely this is.

What are the Business packages has to down load and where can we get those BPs.?
After importing into EP 6.0 , what are the configurations and settings required to get SAP HR screens/ivews (preview when we create after systems in EP),
What are the prerequisites and hardware and software requirements for 8000 users (apprx) ?
Any version upgradations are required for implementing this or
can we use this ECC 6.0 as backend and EP 6.0

For ESS/MSS based on ECC 6.0 (ERP 2005), you can download the XSS business packages from
service.sap.com/download --> Support patches and packages --> Entry By application Group --> SAP Application Components --> SAP ERP -->
SAP ERP 2005 --> Entry By Component --> SAP XSS --> (SAP ESS 600, SAP MSS 600 and SAP PCUI_GP 600).
You can use JSPM to apply these business packages on to the portal. To use JSPM, you have to login to the portal server using <SID>adm to be able to use the JSPM tool.
Business Packages and components in it: you BP consists of the 2 following parts
1) BP_ERP5ESS / BP_ERP5MSS is Portal Business package which consist of iview, pages and roles.. while SAP_ESS / SAP_MSS. is WebDynpro part of it.
These iviews will direct to some WD application which are part of SAP_ESS / SAP_MSS. and they are deployed on server.
2) you have to simple go to

pick the correct version and download. You get full package not incremental. Old ones will be overwritten when you deploy them. try to download them again if it failed first time.

Implementing ALG with UC520

Our SIP providers is saying we should configure our UC520 to communicate with their proxy sip devices for more security between us and them. can anyone give me an ideas of how to configure ALG from UC520 to a SIP proxy. The current setup works fine but our access lists on the SIP lines are preventing some hosts to connect to us so we had to remove the ACLs reducing security. So in place of that we like to implement ALG with UC520. Is this even possible?

You can not do that - without any DVD authoring software as iDVD.
So either
• Treat to return Your new Mac (within 14 days) if Apple doesn't give You iDVD
• Buy a second handed iLife'09 (pref as You then get all Themes - not so in iLife'11 - AND - after program-up-date they will be the same version anyway)
• Buy another DVD-authoring software as Roxio Toast™ (costs a bit - contanin lot's of other things too - that was of great value to me (not so to everyone)
• Use the free (and very simple/basic) BURN™ - as You at least can get Your Movie onto a Playable DVD
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
• iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
• DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
• Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
• Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

How do I burn a Blu-Ray disc with menus?

I have a 38 minute project comprised mostly of HD clips (.m2ts, .MP4 and a few .MPG). I try to render the project to Blu-Ray with Premiere Elements 12, it takes approximately an hour to reach 98% with message "Encoding Media", then switches to "Compiling Media" and freezes there (I let it go for 6 hours with no end in sight). Task Manager shows that it is not using any CPU cycles anymore, while it was using up to 96% of the CPU before it reached that point. I've been able to render this project to a DVD, to Folders on my HDD and to AVCHD successfully on a DVD.
For a test, I tried a 1 minute project with the same results. It wasn't until I removed the disc menu that I was able to burn a Blu-Ray disc. I am running project on a PC with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, an AMD Athlon II x4 635 Processor, 2900 Mhz, 4 cores, 4 logical processors with 4 GB of RAM. I have found a number of references to the 98% completion but no real solutions. Any assistance would be appreciated as I would like to produce a high definition disc with menus...

ATR and jerry9146, thanks for the replies. I am using version 12 of Premiere and, when I attempt to update, it tells me that I have the latest version. I am fairly new to Premiere although I have used other video software before. My motherboard supports up to 16 GB (4 slots) so I could try increasing the memory which would probably speed up the rendering process. I'm not so sure that not having enough memory would prevent it from completing the rendering process but who knows. Task Manager shows CPU usage in the high 90% and shows physical memory in the mid 50% during the rendering process...
My software always finds the media and lets me know if I have the wrong disc in (I had inadvertently inserted a DVD instead). I have tried both H.264 1440x1080i NTSC Dolby and H.264 1920x1080i NTSC Dolby. It does not have a choice for 1080p full HD.
I always cancel out of the Windows popup asking "How do you want to use this disc?" as I assume that Premiere will let the system know. Is that correct?
The movie menu that I chose for this project is a fairly simple one, Faux Widescreen from the General category. It contains 1 main menu and 3 scene menu pages containing a total of 17 scene markers which I inserted myself with Add Marker.
I had already taken out the Stop marker as I had read that it doesn't work for Blu-Ray anyways (and thought that that might have been the culprit). Spacing is good and there is no button overlap.
jerry9146, I have successfully burned an AVCHD file to a DVD thru Premiere and the quality is pretty good. Does the workaround that you suggest produce a Blu-Ray quality file?

Implement Comparable with multiple arguments

Is there a way of implementing Comparable<> with multiple different arguments to the Comparable generics?
For example:

I'm working on creating a generic binary search tree. Currently I have this:

}With the add() function, I can simply do add(T) that will use T's compareTo(T) method to find its place in the tree, however with the remove() and get() functions that I want to have would require an input of T, which isn't what I'm entirely looking for. I could change this to have a key/value pair so it's functionality is like a set, but I'm not sure if that's the best course of action. I could make it implement Map<K, V> to get that functionality...
There is no time limit on this project as it is a part of a personal project.

Let me just say I've seen many projects that simply read/write small amounts of data from the database and display it on a web page, yet the architect will throw in struts, hibernate, etc. and almost all of the time (IMO) it's overkill.

Is there any disadvantages by using such frameworks?There are tons of disadvantages:
1. The API is external (i.e. out of your control) so when it breaks you can't do anything but hack the source.
2. Performance can be a problem, since you've got an extra layer of software to run through, but usually isn't. Struts for example isn't going to bog you down.
3. It costs time (i.e. $$$) to train and come up to speed on how to use these frameworks. If you already know Java and have a small project you could likely complete it in the time it'd take you to learn struts.
4. Compatibility. When the latest version of struts comes out for example, you might want to upgrade to get the latest features, but you might find it breaks the old API and now you have to fix a bunch of code because it's not backwards compatible. That's probably rare, but it's happened to me more than once with struts.
5. Struts documentation (IMO) is horrible (maybe it's better today? i haven't used it in awhile) and it's not fun to learn.
6. Struts error messages are ridiculous and it's often very difficult to figure out what went wrong. Whereas in core Java I find the error messages to be very helpful in telling me what I did wrong.
The list goes on and on and on. Frameworks are bad news for many projects and then again they are saviors for others.

MVC with JTable

I have a question which actually came up from a discussion in [t-5391820] , but I felt that it goes too much away from the original question in that thread, which is why I'm opening this one.
In the aforementioned thread I posted how I use JTables:
I write a class that contains the information that should be displayed in the Table (for example a phone book with names and phone numbers), and then write a custom TableModel that will fetch the information from that phone book class when getValueAt etc. is called.

}Now, there might be a button that adds a new contact. In its actionListener I would do something like this:

((PhoneBookTableModel)phoneTable.getModel()).fireTableChanged();-> When the phone book is modified I call the fireTableChanged method on the Table's TableModel, so that it knows that its contents have changed.
camickr indicated that this is bad style, and that I should learn how MVC works. Now I have read some articles on MVC and I get the feeling that this is exactly what I am doing. The address book is the Model the JTable is the View and whatever interface allows modification of the adress book is the Controller.
Could anyone explain to me where my way of thinking goes wrong? Note that the code provided in this post is just meant to clarify what I mean, I haven't actually compiled it...

I thought about 3 ways to connect a swing GUI to a business model; having the model implement TableModel is just one of them. Your current approach is more along the lines of having a SwingModel as a wrapper of the business model (which requires to manually implement a notification mechanism in the business model).
Your original approach looked like a controller class knew that the view requires an update after the business model had changed. That is actually MVC, in the sense Web developers understand it. Swing's MVC is rather different though (merely relies on the model notifying the view)

Very interesting, this makes everything a bit clearer in my head!
That being said, you have to ackowledge that approach one (the business mdoel just implements Swing's TableModel) is faster to write, and probably just as well if not more mainainable. And the drawback of tying the model to Swing's TableModel interface are not so much:
- the Swing Model interfaces are relatively unintrusive (they do not impose any signature such as an the "addrow" method, only for querying methods.
- changing the view technology (e.g. switching from Swing to SWT or whatever) is relatively unfrequent.
- if the data is inherently tabular, changing the model is rather unlikely (e.g. the same business model will likely not change from a TableModel to a TreeModel). Changing the widget may be desired at some point (say use grids of nested Panels instead of a JTable), but in this case the TableModel interface still make sense, and may be used to populate such custom panels.Acknowledged :)
After these clarifications, I gave it another try on Approach 1 as you called it in your thread. I think now I really got it like it's meant to be, and I think for time being I can live with the drawbacks. Maybe I'll still try out the notifier approach though, just for curiosity. Because frankly speaking, I didn't really have a proper version of that approach, as camickr correctly said, I left the responsibility to call the fire methods to the developer, which is surely not so elegant...
