Implications of resetting Safari
Safari keeps quitting on me, so following the advice in "Safari Help" I was about to reset Safari but before I do I would like to know whether it is going to remove all my favourites/bookmarked sites?
Hi
In addition to Bee's helpful suggestions, three other things:
Have a look at this Apple document for information relative to Safari quitting.
If you go the "reset" route and find Safari continues to quit, then select "report" on the quit panel, and copy/paste the entire crash report to your reply here. Sometimes the crash report reveals other aspects affecting Safari.
Also noticed you're using Safari 2.0. The latest version 2 of Safari is 2.0.4, which is more stable. To install it requires you update your system to 10.4.10. You can do this through Software Update in System Preferences. If you go this route, do not use the computer while the installer is running. On the restart, go to your Utilities folder and open Disk Utility. Once open, highlight your HD, then select "repair permissions".

HOW TO RESET SAFARI 8 TO DEFAULT SETTINGS
I am having trouble with my Safari 8 browser. Lately I have problems getting some pages and videos to load. I am noticing that the alert pops up saying something about Flash blocked for this site, and an arrow asking if I want to allow. I have tried re-installing flash player to no avail. I have been using Firefox lately because of this problem, but would like to go back to Safari. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Why did they have to re-invent Safari and ruin it?
Try un-installing and then re-installing.
Adobe Flash Uninstaller
Adobe Flash Player
To reset Safari, Safari/Clear History and Website Data. Also go to Safari/Preferences/Advanced, enable the Develop Menu, then go there and Empty Caches. -
How can I reset safari 8 on os x yosemite. I have redirect problem on my browser. I want to search things from toolbar using google but it redirects me to a different search engine. I checked all extensions there is no one there that seems wrong. please help me.
In OS X 10.10, with the new update to Safari, you can't simply reset Safari like before. Now you have to actually go in and manually disengage anything plugged in to safari.
This means entering the Library folders for both the system and user accounts affected by the Trovi/Conduit/Search protect redirect malwares.
First up is closing Safari down. Quit it, or Force Quit it using the Command/Option/Esc shortcut. Next up is to navigate to Finder and remove traces of the pest in your user files.
While some antivirus programs are great for this, avoid MacKeeper like the plague, it basically will do the same thing. Do not ever use it.
I should warn you, deleting files in this part may affect your computer adversely. When in doubt, TIME MACHINE BACKUP!!!!
Mouse up to the "Go" top menu selection, and hold down the Option/Alt key. Magically, the Library folder will appear, which you'll need to click on, and go in to. The file path should be something along the lines of /Users/YOURNAME/Library. Inside this are a few folders that you'll need to pop in and check out. Application Support is one of them, this will house anything dealing with preference files or misc files for programs or apps, including in some cases, search redirect add ons. Find the name of your assailant, be it Trovi, Conduit, or the plethora of others out there that hijack your browser (take note of the website it launches when you go to your homepage, check Safari's system preferences to double check prior to this dive into your system files).
Once you've located files associated with the program, Command/Delete them, or just delete them however you normally would. Securely empty the trash to ensure that even if they're in use, they will be deleted.
Next folder on the list is back in the Library, so head backwards in the File path and scroll down to Internet Plug-ins. Inside this folder is anything Safari uses, either intentionally or not. Clear anything in there that doesn't look right, this Folder is normally empty by default anyways.
Next folder for inspection is back in the Library folder, named Safari. This is the real bread and butter here, and where you'll find .plist files galore. You should open and clear Extensions folder, LastSession.plist, as well as the Local Storage folder. Do not delete folders in this enclosing Safari folder, only files.
Empty the trash securely again. Next up is to check the system Library folder for any lingering pest files. The filepath for this folder is simply inside the main drive, Library will be on the same hierarchy as Users, System, Applications, and so on. Open the Library folder, open Application Support folder, and again, check for anything suspicious. Anything inside this folder is a series of preference files for applications used by users/the system. Hopefully there should be nothing in this folder to delete, but on occasion you'll see Trovi or other folders in there.
The next folder to check, back up the ladder in to Library, is the Internet Plug-ins folder. This will contain files for you to delete, likely as .plugin files.
The final folder to check is back in the Library, called Preferences. This is where hunting and pecking will be a time consuming affair. You will likely have roughly 100+ files inside this folder, each of them is a com.whatever.whatever.plist file. These are pretty important files. Among these plist files will very likely be a trovi or conduit plist with a com.trovi.whatever.plist file name. Delete that little file, securely empty your trash.
The final process to finish this all up will be to set your homepage in Safari back to what it used to be. Open it up (WITH YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION OFF), go to your Safari preferences, input your homepage, then save that and close Safari. Restart the Mac, then turn on your Wifi/ethernet connection, and open Safari. It should be hijack-free. -
Can anybody help?
Thanks for reply...
It is a scam I read on the Internet and pops up and blocks you from using safari, is says you have to pay to get it back...
Read online it said reset safari but once on safari I can't do anything other than force quit, when I click back on safari. Same thing happens.
Any ideas? -
Safari 7.0.3 hangs when resetting safari. How to fix it?
Hello everyone. I recently had an issue when I used the "Reset Safari" option. It hangs when I used it. The only way to make it reset is to force quit, and then reset safari again. Currently, I'm running the latest version of Mavericks (10.9.2). I tried reparing disk permissions many times, but it keeps telling me that Safari's permission is different from group 0 or 80 or whatever. Each repair attempt only ends up repairing Safari's permissions again and again. I thought it only needs to be fixed once, which is unusually strange for me. I have a log file of this, posted below (it's long though!). I'd gladly appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Reset Safari -- Now I Can No Longer Access Secure Sites Or iTunes Store.
Hi, A few days ago I reset Safari (I'm still not sure why... boredom??). Well, now I'm paying for it. Now I can't access secure sites (such as gmail, bank accounts, etc.). in Safari. When trying to access a secure site I get an error window that reads something along the lines of: "Safari can’t open the page because it couldn’t establish a secure connection to the server." Even more annoying, I can't access my account on iTunes or access the iTunes store. When trying to do so an error window pops up that reads: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The requested keychain was invalid. Open keychain access and run Keychain first aid, then try again."... Did all that. No help. Incidentally, all my keychains are now gone).
I tried accessing the secure sites through Firefox, which still works fine. But the iTunes problem persists no matter what.
Has anyone else been encountered these same problems or know what I need to do to fix them? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm stuck!
Thanks in advance!Still having this problem - is there no one out there who can help me? Surely someone must have had this happen before, no? You're all making me feel really stupid!!

I have recently upgraded my iMac to 10.6.8 and now find that the upload photo to Facebook facility no longer works. I have reset Safari but this has not resolved the issue - any suggestions? I can click on the "upload photos/video" field and it takes me to Finder to select the photo - but on selecting the photo, the Finder screen disappears as normal but from then on nothing happens.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Now empty the Safari cache.
Back to the menu bar, click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select: Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari then try Facebook.
If that doesn't help, it may be a Safari extension preventing you from uploading content to Facebook.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall. -
I keep getting a 404 error when trying to access any search link using google, I can get to a website by directly using the URL. I have cleared history, empited the cache and reset safari. Any suggestions.
Right. If you are using delegated privs and sudo, make sure that sudo is configured to pass on the PERL5LIB and ORACLE_HOME environment variables at least.

Printing Margins - Reset Safari Library?
I am having a problem printing documents from safari, from only 1 of my accounts on my macbook. The guest account has no problems printing.
The problem is the same regardless what printer I print to. When told to print safari will format the document to fill the entire page. Creating a custom size paper with custom margins doesn't correct the problem either. When printing pages, safari formats the page to print larger than the margins the printer can physically print to (unless set up to print borderless). Also, printing to pdf produces a document that is formatted to outermost margins of the document.
Is it possible to reset safari to a like new state? I've tried going Safari -> Reset Safari, with no improvement. I don't want to create a new user account, there must be a way to reset it.
Thanks in advance!Ok, I had the same problem where the left margin was clipped off and literally spent hours trying to fix it.
I found a solution that worked for me so I registered for this Forum expressly to post the fix.
It's simple, but not intuitive.
From *within Safari* choose "File-->Print." Then select the "Paper Size" drop-down option and choose "Manage Custom Sizes."
Use the "+" sign to create a new template.
Double-click on the name of the template "Untitled" and type in a name of your choosing, such as "US Letter for Safari" and hit "return" to save the name.
For "Paper Size" type in "8.5 in" for width and "11 in" for height.
For "Non-Printable Area" select "User Defined."
Then input your Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margin settings.
I input the following:
-Top and Right: .25"
-Bottom: .5"
-Left: .35"
Then hit "OK" and quit Safari.
Then go to "System Preferences -->Print and Fax" and then select your printer from the menu on the left side.
Once you do that, you should see a drop-down tab in the lower-middle section of the screen that says, "Default Paper Size."
Select the paper size that you just created in Safari and quit System Preferences.
Then open Safari and print a test page.
What's really odd is that you DO NOT need to select the Paper Size on the "Print" screen menu. For me, it still defaults to "Letter," but it actually prints the margin sizes that I set for my Custom paper size.
I hope this saves at least one person all the frustration that I went through looking for a fix! -
It seems that every time I reset Safari, I have to reestablish credentials with the App and iTunes Store. Are there cache or web site data files that are common to all three of those applications?
Currently using Safari 7 with OS 10.9.Thanks, Bee. I reset my browsers on quitting as a matter of course, Most other browsers allow this in a preference setting, but I have a macro for Safari which resets it before quitting. I've noted that the problem is not Safari's alone -- any cache cleaner, like NetShred -- seems to have the same effect. I suppose I was questioning the linkage, though. I would have thought that store credentials would be treated differently than browser cookies and cache files. The cleaners I've used so far allow you to add disparate files to the cleaning routine. I haven't yet found one that allows you to say, "Don't touch that one..." I'll keep looking.
Thanks for the help, Bee. -
Logging in to remote site, reset safari does not clear the user login info?
I'm logging in to a remote site with a 2 step login. Authentication then citrix. User info is not cleared in the authentication portion when I reset safari. Must be stored somewhere else. Where should I look?
Launch the Keychain Access application and search for the server name.
