Import 10.3.9 Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624) to 10.4.10 Mail 2.1.1 (752.3) probs

Hi, I've troll this forum and have not been able to locate my specific problem. I've tried importing my Mail 1.3.11 (v622/624) from 10.3.9 10.4.10 Mail 2.1.1 (752.3) using a Firewire transfer, Network transfer, as well as the Import Mailboxes... function in the Mail 2.1.1 client. Strangely, mail during the interval between late December 2005 to yesterday, when I started using this client on the MacBook is not appearing in my respective mail file folder system. VERY STRANGE. Everything else about Mail 2.1.1 is working fine. What happened to the code during late 2005 - ?? that would create such an anomaly? Yeah, I keep all my email. ;^)
Any ideas what else I can do? I've tried rebuilding the Envelope Index file, dumping the Preferences in my profile and in the System folder, a complete reinstall,... What else can I do? I can certainly keep using my iBook G4 for mail and backward incompatible clients. But when it comes time to travel, it won't be an option to haul two laptops around. Any help or pointers would be appreciated!

Do you still have the use of 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11 with the original Mail folder you have tried to transfer? The condition of the mailboxes prior to trying to convert to Tiger and Mail 2.x is a key factor. I am pasting in some discussion about this -- please read, and ask any clarifications before actually doing anything:
The conversion process from earlier versions of Mail is flawed, especially if the mailboxes were NOT rebuilt before the upgrade to Tiger. To confirm that I have good basis for all of this, and for background, read:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301315
In a pre-conversion to Tiger mailbox, the only file that really mattered, in regard to message content, was the file "mbox". In a mailbox properly created and established in Tiger, the only thing that really matters is the folder named Messages.
Thus, if you are able to compare the size of both the mbox file and the Messages folder, at the time of conversion (a mailbox trying to have it both ways), and they are approximately the same size, then you can reasonably conclude everything was converted. There are some very minor exceptions to this comparative analysis, but it basically holds.
If you have a copy of a xxxxx.mbox folder with only a mbox file, or if any mbox file it contains is much larger than any Messages folder present, then it may worth trying an import command to check. If you make a Duplicate of the INBOX.mbox, and drag the copy to the Desktop, you can then import it into Mail 2.0, by targeting it, and saying it is a mailbox of type "Other" rather than type "OSX". Before attempting the Import, rename the INBOX.mbox copy to be OldInbox.mbox, and remove all the files within it EXCEPT the Info.plist and mbox files. When you do this, you can then access the imported mailbox, examine the messages, and transfer any you believe you need. At the same time, if you maintain the currently in-use mailbox, now altered to only have one Messages folder, you will have that to access as well.
If mailboxes in account folders do not convert properly during the upgrade to Tiger, then you don't use Import to recreate any mailboxes found in account folders, but rather only import to be added as On My Mac mailboxes.
If the pre-Tiger xxxx.mbox is stripped of all but the Info.plist file and mbox file, then recognition of relationships between messages received and the subsequent Reply may be lost, but not the messages. This is why the condition of the mailboxes (whether the index had been well maintained, which Rebuild does), in my opinion, matters at the time of conversion. For any index file leftover from the earlier structure to be helpful, it must be in good order. With nothing but the Info.plist and mbox file, an Import may be more successful, even though some messages linkage may be lost.

  • Can't import mbox file into Mail anymore

Hi all, I am getting nowhere with this issue...I have archived my Apple Mail inbox and then turned around and imported it into Apple Mail (so as to have it on the local computer, not the network) many times in the past. It no longer works. I got to File>Import Mailboxes. I get the window "Import data from:" and my choices for file formats are "Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage, Netscape/Mozilla, Thunderbird, Eudora, Files in mbox format." I first chose "Files in mbox format" as I have in the past. I hit "Continue." I go to the folder where I keep my archived mail. I click the containing file for my most recent export, "Inbox 5.mbox." This opens a new window listing "Items to import" that I may check off. Every item on this list is an old mbox folder. My new export folder doesn't show up. If I go back, open the containing file I mentioned above, "Inbox 5.mbox" and click the actual mbox file, I get the message, "no valid mbox files were found."
I've found other threads referring to this and some say the solution is to pick the "Mail from Mac OSX" data type from the import list, the problem is, this is not an option for me!
If anyone can help I would appreciate it, this is really frustrating...

We have users who have been importing collections of old pine and alpine messages who are having problems since switching to SL.
I discovered that alpine has been saving to MBX format, so users ende dup with collections of mixed mbox and MBX files. The "file" command can tell you which file is which format. There is an old program called "mailutil" that can be used to convert MBX to mbox (available in linux "uw-imap" packages). It is also in MacPorts imap-uw, but the latter is not maintained and appears aimed at older versions of MacOSX. There is also a FileImport plugin for Euroda_OSE that seems to handle more of the .mbox files than Apple Mail does, but still has problems with .mbox files from pine for the period 2002--2005. The file command indicates the problem files have long lines. I tried splitting one of the files
using mh inc, but it had 1000's of messages and a large fraction have the long lines problem.
Can you read the archived messages using "mail -f <filename>"? What does "file" say?

  • Import entourage files into mail

I just upgraded without I guess reading the fine print. I used Entourage for my e-mails and can't open it anymore with OS X Lion. How can I import my thousands of mails and archived stuff into Apple Mail?

I haven't been able to get a 100% successful import from mail.app (2.0) into Entourage 2004 (latest update). For example, if I import a mail 2.0 account with 2000+ messages (sorted in various folders and subfolders) into entourage 2004, random messages aren't imported, missing attachments, etc.
Also, I've never come across anyone saying this CAN work because Entourage 2004 doesn't understand the new .elmx format.
    But, using this tool...
    http://www.cosmicsoft.net/emlxconvert.html
    ...and following these instructions...
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2005/11/archiveemlx/index.php
...I've been able to successfully import mail 2.0 accounts/message/mailboxes into Entourage 2004 (though, takes a little manual grunt work, but works none the less).
    Regards,
    Kristin.

  • Issues importing messages from live mail

I am having problems importing messages from my WIndows Live Mail to my Thunderbird. The instructions say go to "Tools ImportExport | Import all messages from a directory | Also from its subdirectories." However in my Thunderbird l have tools, import and then it takes me to a wizard which says "This wizard will help import messages....." and when l select 'mail' as the type l wish to import it asks for a type of mail l want to import. Windows Live Mail is not in the list. Do you have any instructions or advice?

Those instructions assume that you have installed [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ ImportExportTools].
    http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html
Or, if you can export the WLM mail to eml files, they can be dragged from their Explorer location and dropped in a TB folder.

  • How can I access old Entourage emails to import them into Mac Mail after upgrading to OS Lion?il

How can I access old Entourage emails to import them into Mac Mail after upgrading to OS Lion? I don't really want to go back to Snow Leopard in order to access the old Microsoft Applications, but they simply aren't supported in Lion.

In Mail you can select Import Mailboxes... from the File menu. There is an import from Entourage feature.

  • How to import .eml files to Mail.app?

    Hello,
I've been trying to find a less tedious way to migrate from Gmail to iCloud. Trying to drag and drop (or simply move via mail.app options) results in errors. I've been able to move over about 10000 of my 60000 messages so far, but it's been a long process disrupted by the aforementioned errors. Therefore, I've decided to simply download the Gmail messages. Unfortunately, they are in .eml files. Obviously I can open them in mail.app if I ever need them, but it would be much easier to import them into mail.app so they are on the iCloud server on not on my mac. This is good because it saves room on my mac, and also makes searching for old messages easier.
So my question is (and I've been searching all over for this), is there still no way to import .eml files into mail.app? Are there no programs that can at least convert .eml to .mbox?
A workable solution would be a time (life) saver and greatly appreciated!!!

In case anyone runs into this issue in the future, here is how I moved Gmail messages to iCloud.
    1) Download an app for mac called Backup Gmail. Proceed to backup all your Gmail messages to your mac by following instructions given. The files will be in .eml.
    2) Download emailchemy from the link above. Proceed to convert .eml messages to .mbox.
    3) Open mail.app and go to File > Import Mailboxes. Follow on screen instructions. Depending on how many messages you have, this can take a while. When done you will see a folder called "import-1" in your mail.app under On My Mac. At this point your Gmail messages are able to be used in mail.app and if you are happy with this, don't go to step 4. In step 4 we will move the messages to your iCloud server.
    4) This is where things get tedious and tricky if you have a lot of messages. Go to each folder in your "import-1" folder and select all messages. Then drag and drop them either in your iCloud inbox or any designated folder in iCloud. It appears that your sent messages are mixed in here, so it's not a clean solution, but the best one I've found so far. This process can take a long time if you have a lot of messages and you might run into some errors, but it works.s
If anyone has an easier solution, please do share!

  • How do I import photos from E mail to Pages

How do I import photos from E mails to Pages?

Send yourself an e-mail with image embedded or attached.
    Open e-mail in Safari.
If embedded, click the small, LEFT pointing arrow in upper right of tool bar.
    Click "Save image,"
It will go into your "Photos" icon on your Home screen.
If attached, download the attachment. It should go into your "Photos" icon....I think. I haven't tried this with an attached photo.
Click on "Photo" icon to check if it/they are there.
Select the photo you want to import to pages by clicking on it..
When you do so, you will see on the toolbar that pops-up above, a small box with a right-pointing arrow. Click on it. Select "Copy Photo."
Go back to your "Home" page.
    Click on the "Pages" icon..
    As a test, open a blank/new document.
Click anyplace on it until you see a menu open-up that says "Select - Select all - Paste."
    Click on "Paste."
Click on "Undo" in the upper left of the toolbar to get rid of it.
You can repeat this on any document that accepts images by putting in the cursor wherever you want the photo inserted, tap until the "Select - Select As - Paste" box reapperas and  and click "Paste."
    Good luck.

  • Importing from Entourage to Mail Question

    Hi,
I'd like to import from entourage to mail, however I'd like to select a cutoff date of the emails coming in. In other words, instead of 10 years of email, I just want to take the past two or three.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how easily to achieve this end result?
    Thanks

I haven't got a direct answer for you but I had similar experiences which may help you. I found the Mail import to be pretty ineffective and unable to cope with large mailboxes.
I started with Entourage and actually moved to Thunderbird when earlier versions of Mail were not really very good. TBird imported Entourage emails fine - about three years of emails.
With SL and Mail 4, I was looking for a way to import all my TBird emails - now 7 years with as the import into Mail was still flawed and also it had a bad habit of recovering EVERY email ever received, including all the spam. So I found "Eudora mailbox importer" which perfectly moved all my TBird mail straight into Mail with no fuss.
So if you get stuck, its Entourage to TBird to Mail !

  • Import email from apple mail not working

I have a simple applescript which imports emails from Apple Mail into filemaker
    tell application "Mail"
              set theSelection to selection
set theMessage to item 1 of theSelection
              content of theMessage

This works in the Old Apple Mail in 10.6 but Lion changes everything doesnt it. This is not working in the new Mail 5.1. It will import the first message in the string but not the HIGHLIGHTED message which may be in the message string of 3 or 4. I want it to set theMessage contents of the highlighted message. Does anyone know how to select the highlighted message in a string - sometimes called the selected message. Thanks

  • Importing mailbox - no valid mail files found

    Hi
I'm having problems importing a mailbox from my back-up on a CD-ROM. I click on 'Import Mailbox' and choose 'mail for os x' and then the folder which ends '*.mbox'. I then get an error which says, 'No valid mail files found'. Within that mailbox I can see messages ending *.emix but it just won't work.
Can anyone help me to restore these emails?
    Thanks.

Back up one directory level and select the Mailboxes folder (/Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/) instead. You should then get a listing of available mailboxes from which you can import. Uncheck those you don't want to import.
