Import 10.9 pop3 mail files to 10.10 mail app

Hi,
I did a fresh install of 10.10 Yosemite. I back up the ~/Library/Mail/V2 files of all my pop3 gmail mails which is over 12GB, I would like to copy them back to the 10.10 mail app and could someone tells me how to do it properly. It seems that copy the folder back to the location is not going to work on 10.10.
Thanks for the help!

Hi wisestar,
Mailboxes may be imported into the Mail application by using File menu > Import Mailboxes. See this article -
Mail (Mavericks): Import mailboxes
Note that while the article title says Mavericks, the same process works in Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite.)
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Best,

  • GMail (POP3) & Mail.app

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone might help me understanding the behavior of Mail.app while working with GMail in POP3.
I switched yesterday from Thunderbird, wishing to give Mail.app a try.
I had no problems in the setup, but what is really annoying is the layout Mail.app gives me.
I have the "Inbox" and "Sent" folders (I hope I'm translating properly, since I do not use MacOS with the English interface), with the "RSS" menu on its bottom. After the RSS item, there is one more, called "GMAIL", which contains every folder of my GMail account (All Mail, Drafts, Sent Mail, Spam, Starred, Trash).
What's shocking to me is that Mail.app downloaded *every message* since my GMail account is active (2005!), for every folder. Moreover, whenever I receive a new mail it appears both in the "Inbox" at the top of the column on the left in Mail.app, and in the "GMAIL" section. Reading the mail from the "Inbox" section does not mark the mail as read in the "GMAIL" one.
So here there are my questions:
    1. What happens if I delete the "GMAIL" section of the left column? Will my mails be deleted also from the GMail account or just from Mail.app?
    2. How do I prevent Mail.app from downloading every message my GMail account stores since its opening?
    3. How do I get rid of the "duplicate inbox" behavior?
Thanks in advance for all of your help,
    Maurizio

Yes, you were right, the GMail account was configured as IMAP.
I mistakenly wrote "POP3" in the subject because I took for granted that the account would have been set as POP3 by default.
Unfortunately for me, I still can't understand how may I configure Mail.app for using POP3 with GMail.
Would you mind helping me through this, please?
sure thing. this actually took me a LONG time to figure out.
first you'll need to delete your gmail imap account from amil preferences->accounts then click on + there.
this will start Mail setup wizard and enter your gmail email and pasword press option. the "create" button will change "continue". click on it and on the next screen you can choose to set it up as POP.

  • Loss of Imports of mboxes to Mail.app

I imported messages to Mail.app that I had in Thunderbird and all seemed to be fine. I moved them from an import folder to their proper folder in mail and was able to access and read various ones. However, after I had finished, I clicked on various folders to read some of the emails only to discover that all folders were empty! Even a couple of folders showed xnumber of emails in that folder but nothing was there.
    What has happened?
Is there any way to restore all of those lost emails?
    Thanks for your help.

After closing Mail.app and posting the above message, I reopened Mail.app and all of my messages were there!

  • How to import .eml files to Mail.app?

    Hello,
I've been trying to find a less tedious way to migrate from Gmail to iCloud. Trying to drag and drop (or simply move via mail.app options) results in errors. I've been able to move over about 10000 of my 60000 messages so far, but it's been a long process disrupted by the aforementioned errors. Therefore, I've decided to simply download the Gmail messages. Unfortunately, they are in .eml files. Obviously I can open them in mail.app if I ever need them, but it would be much easier to import them into mail.app so they are on the iCloud server on not on my mac. This is good because it saves room on my mac, and also makes searching for old messages easier.
So my question is (and I've been searching all over for this), is there still no way to import .eml files into mail.app? Are there no programs that can at least convert .eml to .mbox?
A workable solution would be a time (life) saver and greatly appreciated!!!

In case anyone runs into this issue in the future, here is how I moved Gmail messages to iCloud.
    1) Download an app for mac called Backup Gmail. Proceed to backup all your Gmail messages to your mac by following instructions given. The files will be in .eml.
    2) Download emailchemy from the link above. Proceed to convert .eml messages to .mbox.
    3) Open mail.app and go to File > Import Mailboxes. Follow on screen instructions. Depending on how many messages you have, this can take a while. When done you will see a folder called "import-1" in your mail.app under On My Mac. At this point your Gmail messages are able to be used in mail.app and if you are happy with this, don't go to step 4. In step 4 we will move the messages to your iCloud server.
    4) This is where things get tedious and tricky if you have a lot of messages. Go to each folder in your "import-1" folder and select all messages. Then drag and drop them either in your iCloud inbox or any designated folder in iCloud. It appears that your sent messages are mixed in here, so it's not a clean solution, but the best one I've found so far. This process can take a long time if you have a lot of messages and you might run into some errors, but it works.s
If anyone has an easier solution, please do share!

  • I Cannot import a CSV or VCARD file into MAIL

When I try to import, the Vcard or Text file selection is grayed out. I checked permissions, and as admin, I have read/write access to everything. How can I get these to be active so I can import.
    Thanks.

I just went through the same process. My suggestion is go to http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/EudoraMailboxCleaner.html
Eudora Mailbox Cleaner is not what it sounds like but a program that will help to import to Mail.app from other mail programs.
Also, go to the Mail and Address Book Discussions: Apple.com/support/Discussions and click on Mail and Address Book (it's in right hand column) for additional forum help.
I used another program suggested in that forum but can't locate its URL now!!
    It can be done!

  • Mail.app fail to import a mbox file

    Hi,
I have a problem with the importation of a xxxx.mbox file, downloaded for archiving from a gmail account (before deleting it) and following the online instruction as explained there http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14911.
The mbox file seems coherent, as it weights 640,9 Mo for 4300 emails.
The infos about this file indicates that the type is "Microsoft Outlook mailbox", but neither data importations as a common mbox file nor a Apple mail mbox file succeed, as both had the result of an Importation file appearing in Mail with a file named after the mbox file in it, but no email at all.
Beside, Mail does succeed in importing .mbox exported from itself.
I must also mention that Mail frequently refuses to quit, and requires the use of Activity Monitor to be shuted down.
Thanks anyone very much in advance for any expertise,
    J.

    Thanks for the suggestion,
but looking at ~/Library/Mail/V2/mailboxes, the mailbox corresponding in the file /importation even shows no data files, just a info.splist.
It appears that Mail is not capable to import correctly the .mbox file of interest, as Mail not seems to work a lot importing it.
In conclusion, either the .mbox file is corrupted and if so, not exploitable (thanks gmail), or my Mail.app has a problem importing it. But in that last case, it is just strange that I don't get any error message.

  • Importing mailbox - no valid mail files found

    Hi
I'm having problems importing a mailbox from my back-up on a CD-ROM. I click on 'Import Mailbox' and choose 'mail for os x' and then the folder which ends '*.mbox'. I then get an error which says, 'No valid mail files found'. Within that mailbox I can see messages ending *.emix but it just won't work.
Can anyone help me to restore these emails?
    Thanks.

Back up one directory level and select the Mailboxes folder (/Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/) instead. You should then get a listing of available mailboxes from which you can import. Uncheck those you don't want to import.

  • Fail to import emails from Thunderbird to Mail app

    hello !
I'm trying to switch from Thunderbird to Mail app, but Mail app is loosing abt 80% of my email while importing them from Thunderbird. I have a POP3 email account, set to delete copies from server and abt 15 GB of emails (with lots of folders) which I need to import from Thunderbird.
    what I already tried:
    - import option of Mail app
    - created mbox files
    - installed Eudora Mailbox Cleaner ( it doesn't work with Yosemite)
is there any solution ? thank you in advance !

no chance to solve it ?

  • Importing sent e-mails as .mbox into Mail.app

After years of putting it off, I decided to finally dump Thunderbird and start using Apple's homegrown Mail app. I had tried multiple methods of getting my e-mails out of Thunderbrid and into Mail but - after many false starts and missing e-mails - I settled on simply selecting all messages in a given folder (inbox, sent) and saving as an .mbox file. Mail's own import tool never worked correctly for me, presumably because I have multiple e-mail accounts that have been merged, transfered between computers and operating systems, and tinkered with so much that Thunderbird's profile folder structure is somehow differing from the norm.
At any rate, I imported my inboxes (in .mbox format) into Mail and it worked beautifully! All the messages were marked as unread, but they were all present and accounted for and I was quite happy.
When I tried the exact same process (selecting all messages and saving as .mbox in Thunderbird, then importing into Mail) for my Sent folder, however, I encountered a problem. Mail only imported a single sent e-mail (the most recent one)! This happened with multiple attempts at multiple separate sent folders. I tried "Get Info" on the .mbox files, and - seeing as they were several hundred MB - they clearly contain more than that single message. This leads me to suspect that the issue isn't with corrupt files or Thunderbird saving them incorrectly, but rather an issue with the way Sent e-mails are handled or read by Mail.
Can anyone explain exactly what is causing this or offer advice on a way to move my sent e-mails over? I am able to save in EML, HTML, Plan Text, and other formats, though it appears that Mail really wants .mbox or a specific file from another app (once again, the Thunderbird import option doesn't work for me, so I am unable to rely on that).
    Find my details below:
    iMac running OSX 10.8.2
    Thunderbird 17.0.2
    Mail 6.2
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Go to File > Import Mailboxes> From Apple Mail.  Then select the parent level folder i.e. [email protected]  From that window will be checkboxes of every possible folder (inbox, draft, deleted, sent, draft) you had in your old Apple Mail.

  • Mail.app crashes on opening - no plist file to delete

This started happening a couple of days ago. Every time I open the mail app, it freezes (spinning beachball) and then crashes. Attached below is the most recent crash report. I apparently don't have the plist file that everyone says to delete.
So what are my options? I've looked at other threads, and they're not quite helpful for me.

Ugh. Well, got far enough to import my old mailboxes and set up my accounts when the app crashed. I got rid of the plist file once again, Mail started up with no problem ... then crashed.

  • Using applescript/automator to import and categorise multiple .txt files

    Hello all,
I wonder is anyone can offer me some advice on the best approach to importing multiple text files into excel. I've searched excel specific forums, but it seems that the macro's that work on windows wont work on my mac.
Basically, I am trying to find a way of importing multiple comma delimanted text files into an excel workbook. If it is possible, it would also be great to automatically compute the data into summarised variables (e.g., the data is multiple reaction time trials [220 to be precise] and I would like to create cells within excel with the mean scores from groups of the trials [A1 to A20, A21 to A40, A41 to A80 etc.]) within a seperate sheet (at present I am importing the text files one by one, performing the calculations, before copying and paste special into a summary sheet).
I have put an example of the file in dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/9y6valpkzsq8kgz/Example%20workbook.xlsx) to give anyone who is willing to help a better idea of what I mean.
    Thanks in advance.

    Danitaz,
Did you ever figure out the problem with your mail that was going out from the wrong server (2 yrs. ago)?  I have the same problem from my MacBook Pro, using Mac Mail.  I try to send email from my work account and then find to my surprise and dismay that I get an autoreply in my personal gmail account from the person I wrote to.  I look in the Sent mail for my work account and it looks like the message went from there but I can see in the reply that it instead went from my gmail account!  I tried checking the box in my work account that says "send only from this SMTP server" but that didn't fix the problem.  The only way seems to be turning off the gmail in order to send with certainty from my work account.  If you have any suggestions I would love to try them.  Thanks!
PS Sorry to write off topic here.  I wanted to reply to the original posting but I guess since it is so old I couldn't do so.

  • How do I import my Outlook 2013 PST file into Office 365 and then have them permanently synced?

I have Office 365. I have Outlook 2013 downloaded on my computer with all my emails and contacts, etc.
I want to import the entire PST file with my emails, contacts etc. into Office 365 / Exchange Online (cloud?). Once that is done, I want to set it up so that my Desktop Outlook will always update and sync with my Office 365 when I am out of the office and
    use the Outlook mail App.
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
You can also use Outlook or Outlook Web App to import your existing PST file into your Office 365 account.
First configure your Office 365 account into Outlook, then use Import/Export
feature in Outlook client to import your PST file:

It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office

  • Can't import MBP (intel) Mac-mail, into G5 (PPC) Mac-mail

I recently sold my MBP (intel), and have the cloned HD on a FW drive. Unfortunately, I did not export my mail as an archive, from the MBP before I made the clone.
I have a G5 Powermac dual 2.0, that I do not use for mail, and wanted to use my MBP mail in the G5's Mail app.
I tried copying the user/library/mail folder from the MBP's same folder into the G5. This has always worked for me in the past.
When I launch mail, I see all my messages from the MBP in my G5 inbox, but after a few seconds, a status bar appears in the lower left activity section of the main viewer, and then the messages disappear. To where, I have no idea. I have re-tried this method many times, clicking on the stop icon in that status bar, but I can't stop it in time before it disappears all the messages. (Where are they, Gitmo?)
I have taken all accounts offline, and disconnected the internet, and that also doesn't help.
I have tried just importing the inbox from the MBP FW clone, and i get a pop-up message in the import window that says,
    "Error
+No valid Mail for OS X files were found"+
Is there an incompatibility between the intel and ppc's Mail architecture, that is responsible for this?
Why do I see my messages for a few seconds before they vanish without a trace?
Is there any workaround for me that I can try?
Obviously I can't reboot my PPC with the Guid partitioned MBP clone...
Can I clone the MBP's GUID format HD clone to a G5 partition in the Apple Partition Map format and make it bootable? Seems like a lot of effort, but I am getting desperate.
    I'm tearing my hair out...
BTW, I am getting a new MBP, but as it's a special order, it is going to take a week.
I need to access those messages now! Can anyone help?

Well after a day of hair tearing I have finally figured it out.
I found a program called, emix to mbox converter, and I used that to convert all the mail files into an mbox file.
Then I was able to import that, and drag the emails into my .mac inbox.
It's taking a while to transfer them from the import folder to the inbox, but it is working... pheeew!

  • Issues importing messages from live mail

I am having problems importing messages from my WIndows Live Mail to my Thunderbird. The instructions say go to "Tools ImportExport | Import all messages from a directory | Also from its subdirectories." However in my Thunderbird l have tools, import and then it takes me to a wizard which says "This wizard will help import messages....." and when l select 'mail' as the type l wish to import it asks for a type of mail l want to import. Windows Live Mail is not in the list. Do you have any instructions or advice?

Those instructions assume that you have installed [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ ImportExportTools].
    http://chrisramsden.vfast.co.uk/3_How_to_install_Add-ons_in_Thunderbird.html
Or, if you can export the WLM mail to eml files, they can be dragged from their Explorer location and dropped in a TB folder.
