Import and playback slow

I have a imovie project stored on an external hard drive (only) because I don't have enough free space on my main drive. Yet playback and import is freezing - SBBOD!. I have been told that I need more virtual memory; does this mean RAM and can I install it myself?

It has to be *Mac OS Extended* formatted (UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - Doesn't work)
If not then You have to move any valubale files elsewhere and then formatte it as such.
Formatting always erase too.
Then it depends on what Mac You got Intel or Power-PC (G3, G4 or G5)
When formatting You have also to select
• Gui-something or
• the other alternative
depending on Mac CPU.
You should ask in proper forum related to Your specific Mac
Then When the external drive is properly formatted - You just use the Mac OS X
install disks and put a Mac OS on this one.
Then when done You can in System pref. select start disk - or - while starting up
keeping [alt-key] pressed and select from displayed alernatives.

  • IMovie importing and exporting slow as molasses!

I can not figure out why it takes SO long to import and export into iMovie.
I try to import quicktime files into iMovie in order to edit and it seems to take hours sometimes.
Then when I'm editing it's like everything moves static and it's just not smooth. Really annoying.
Then when I Finally am able to edit and I want to export it back into a quicktime a 5 minute project can sometimes take HOURS. There were times i left it to export overnight even and it was still going in the morn.
There has GOT to be something I'm doing wrong here. My projects turn out great once they are done but this time thing is a serious issue. Please can someone offer advice. I even bought an external and took movie files off my HD and off iMovie thinking that was the problem but still it seems to take really long. Are there settings or something i'm missing? I'm no tech guru so anyone who can help would...I would so appreciate it your patience and kindness.
    Thanks so much!

A   .mov  file can contain .mp4 data or other form of compression.  .mov is essentially a wrapper and doesn't in itself tell you what the type of actual compression being used might be. YOUR .mov files may well be  H264 compressed video. You can convert these to any one of several other compressed formats and in doing so you can choose how much quality you wish to convert them to in most instances. You could take that original .mov file and convert it to ProRes 422HQ and get a huge uncompressed files or convert it to a smaller and more compressed form for viewing at a small size and higher compression. FCPX creates those uncompressed (less compressed) ProRes 422 files if you tell it to optimize your media.  File size (literal pixels vs pixels ), amount of compression, data rate and type of compression  all contribute to the eventual quality of the resulting file. I would strongly advise you to NOT dump the original files. In fact when you copy your data from your camera you should copy the ENTIRE folder and keep that as an archive. Larry Jordan has some good information on why that's important. If you downsample to a smaller form that uses less hard drive space an toss the originals you will NEVER be able to get back the full quality. It's like taking a RAW camera still shot and making a small jpg and then tossing the RAW footage. You can't get back data that you throw out. There is no free lunch. FCPx doesn't HAVE to copy from the external drive. You can control that in your preferences. I can promise you that if you toss the original footage in favor of saving some drive space, if that is good footage worth keeping, you will regret it later if you ever choose to reuse that footage and want the best possible image. Buy more hard drive space and get used to doing that cause it won't be the last time you have to buy more storage space.

  • Media Encoder Hangs on File Import and Playback

Media Encode Hangs on launch (extremely slow not normal).  When I drag and drop a file it hangs or using file import it hangs. Encodes that should only take a few minutes are listed as 1 hour.

  • Choppy video on import and playback

    Hello everyone,
I just got an ADVC-55 AD video converter for my Mac quad 2.8. (I am running 10.5.4). When I try to import the video from the VCR via the firewire-connected converter, the video+sound as it is being imported is choppy. This remains choppy on playback once recorded, as well. The same results were for iMovie '08 and iMoveHD '06. In general, when importing movies into the computer, is using iMove '08 better than iMovieHD '06? (I know that iMovie is better for chapters and such for editing once in the computer).
I have tested the VCR on my TV and it is smooth with the same source tape and machine.
This converter is supposed to be plug and play and there are no drivers or software that comes with it. There are 6 dipswitches and these are all set to off.
Drive is a Seagate Barricuda 7200, with 300 gigs free...
Are there any setting I should change to fix the choppiness?
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thank you for you time.

    Steve:
As good practice save the project as a disk image (File->Save as Disk Image menu option) instead of burning directly to disk. This allows you to play the disk image in DVD Player to verify that the encoding of the project was good. If the project plays OK in DVD Player you can then burn that disk image to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available. If there is any problems with the disk playing it can then be narrowed down to the burn process. Also use the top grade media. Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Maxell -R are the most recommended brands in this forum.

    Hi
    Some thoughts.
    1. free space on Your internal (start-up) hard disk ? 25Gb or more ? 5Gb or less ?
    2. Is Your Canopus ADVC-55 set right ?
My Canopus ADVC-300 has two sets of DIP-switches on it's bottom and this has to
be set right to work. See manual.
    3. A VHS-tape can play "smoothly" to a TV but still have "drop-outs". When exporting
via a A/D converting box (eg Canopus ADVC-55) It will be much more sensitive to these.
Set in iMovie/Pref to not import as individual clips. Can help a bit.
If this is Your problem an import would yield in lots of small clips.
After change it should import larger blocks with smoother playback.
    4. QT 7.5 seems to be problematic. Try to downgrade to version 7.4.5
QuickTime is the heart/engine in iMovie and FinalCut. If this has a problem
both programs starts to ill behave
    5. Deleting iMovie pref file might help - easier is to start a new account and
log into this and have a re-try.

  • Casio Exilim EX-S600 digital camera import and playback issues

When importing the mpeg4 video (.AVI files) from my Casio Exilim EX-S600 digital camera with plug in version 1.1 and iMovie HD 6.0.1 I consistently get an unknown error. I use the HQ setting on the camera. Quicktime will play the movies though sometimes they stutter, if you pause, and then resume it seems to playback better. Strange to say the least. Any tips on how I can edit these clips? And get better playback performance in Quicktime? Thanks in advance!

  • PRE 10 hangs up on clips while importing and playback

After importing clips from by DV camcorder when I play them back in preview or work with them on the timeline they often will hang up and pause somewhere in the middle of the clip and I have to start with play again to continue.  Makes editing a terrible process.  Do I have a setting in correct in PRE 10?  Sometimes the actual importing process is hung up in the same manner with an error that there was an "unknown recorder problem" and all of that clip is then lost.  Help!

  • ITunes 10.5.3 has import and playback issues

I cannot add some MP3 to my library using iTunes 10.5.3 software version, but can using earlier software versions. Also some tunes already in my iTunes libabry no longer play in 10.5.3. This seems to be related to some tag information that does not carry across into 10.5.3 because the tunes in my library that dont play do not have the cover artwork as the icon but just the quaver icon. This is annoying! Please someone fix!

I am having same problem. I want to to take a music video from the Movies Library and export it into the Music Video Playlist at bottom of sidebar. The only thing I can do is to create another playlist. Why cant  I put them directly into the Music Video Playlist provided by Apple? I also tried exporting from desk top and directly import into the Music Video Playlist but it will not allow this, so I am forced to import everything into one of the Itunes Libraries located at the top of Sidebar. • Lightroom 4 won't import or playback video

Hi. I previously submitted this question last year for Lightroom 4.1 (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1045374). I never did get any responses.
Since then, I tried formatting and re-installing my OS (OS X 10.7). There was a brief window at that time when Lightroom was able to import and playback video files. Then I made the mistake of re-installing Photoshop CS6 (because it frequently forgets that I'm a registered and licensed user of the program and reverts to Trial mode, which is very annoying) because I read on a forum somewhere that that would help. Since then, Lightroom has stopped being able to import videos or play back any videos that I have in my catalog. I am now up to Lightroom 4.4 on OS X 10.8. Here is the system info screen from Lightroom. If anyone has any suggestions for how to fix this, I'd appreciate it.

  • Import into IMovie slows and stops

Halfway through an import of film from my camcorder, the image loading on IMovie goes into slow motion and stops the import. The playback rate on the camera is at normal speed. I'm using a Sony Handycam DCR-HC26. This is the first time this has happened.

    Try it and see!
You should have at least 25GB, better still 40GB, available to import and edit movies. There are a lot of swap files going on in the background.

  • Updated to LR 5.4, images now importing extremely slow. After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast.

After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast. Canon,Nikon, Leica and Fuji files all rendering slow. iMac 2.9 ghz 16gb RAM OSX 10.8.5. Catalogs and images are kept on external drives. Drives running fine. Really need a fix on this since I'm norally imported and processing at least 4,000 images per LR Catalog. Is there way to revert back to 5.3? I can't use 5.4 is its current state. Thanks.

Download LR 5.3 and install it
By the way, lots of people have this complaint about LR 5.4, and the advice I give is to use LR 5.3 unless you need one of the new camera models supported by LR 5.4

  • Importing and exporting from cc premiere pro is very slow

importing and exporting from cc premiere pro is very slow, the system has i7 processor and memory is 64 gb and has internal raid storage. what could be the issue.

If you would like to test the tuning and setup of your Premiere installation go to our Premiere Pro BenchMark PPBM, the Instructions page has the download file.  This single download can test Premiere 6, 7 or 8 with the identical benchmark.  We maybe able to tell you why you are having problems.

  • I am experiencing very slow import and backing up issues.

I am experiencing very slow import and backing up catalog on exiting Lightroom. This is a very recent issue. I use RAW files.

The type of files you are importing will have an effect on the speed of the import process. Larger files, like raw sensor files, are normally much larger than JPG files.
But if this is something new, the slowness, and you are using the same camera with the same size files as previously then it's not just the file size.
What type of computer and what operating system are you using.

  • Encoding and playback problem HD files

    Hi all,
Currently, I'm using a new HD camcorder and have no problem with importing and playing these files is premiere cs4 pro. However, when I'm using six video track at the same time I experience some playback problems. After rendering, the video's play, but not smooth, they  skip frames and playing a few frames back. In other words, it seems that the video playback stutters. The problem still excists when I encode the project to any file (mpeg2-blu ray, avi, etc). When using two video tracks (with two HD video) this problem is not present, even when these video's are in slowmotion. Installing the new update (4.2) did not solve the problem.
    Specs of my system:
    Quad core Q6600 @3.0GHz (overclocked)
    8gb RAM
    >200gb free disk space
    windows 7, 64-bit
Does anyone have some suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Jeffrey

    Harm,
Sorry for not responing for a few days, but I runned the benchmark you'll send me. The main results (dee details attached file):
    53,6,  secs Total Benchmark Time
    6,4,  secs AVI  Encoding Time
    14,2,  secs MPEG Elapsed Time
    33,  secs Rendering Time
Since the potential problem is my hard disk, inaddition, I runned HDtune (hopefully it will help pinpionting the problem):
disk1: avarage transfer rate: 94MB/s, acces time 13.8ms, burst rate 185MB/s
disk2: avarage transfer rate: 85MB/s, acces time 14ms, burst rate 157MB/s
disk3: avarage transfer rate: 73MB/s, acces time 13.9ms, burst rate 183MB/s
Analyzing these results, could the current hard disk configuration cause the problem I have, or is my system to slow anyway to edit AVCHD material?
If the hard disk configuration is the problem, could it be solved by applying your suggestion by removing all partitions? Since, I'm not looking forward of removing all partions(re-installing windows (dual boot win7 and vista), shifting a huge amount of data, etc), but if it would help I will do it.
    Thanks inadvance,
    Jeffrey

  • Recording with audio playback slowed down 65% what speed do I need to speed the video back up to to get it into real time?

Ive recorded a test video with audio/music playback slowed down 65% what speed do I need to speed the video back up to to get it into "real" time?
If I'd slowed the audio playback down 50% I would make the video 100% faster.
If I'd slowed the audio playback down 100% I would make the video 200% faster.
So its obviously somewhere inbetween speeding up by 100-200%
Sorry but its melting my brain today and I cant remember the calculation.
    thanks

    hey all
Thanks for the advise on this. I will explain a little more what am have/am intending to do.
I have used Audacity to slow the song down (Effect>Change Tempo)
Audacity will allow me slow the original song down by up to 99% (Or anything in-between up to 3 decimal places)
Unfortunately I am working to a time restraint of 12 minutes per clip (as my DSLR will only allow up to a 12 minute clip).
The song at normal speed is 4 minutes long.
Originally I slowed the audio down by 50% (Making the audio 8 minutes long), lip synced to it using a rasta blaster and recorded the video using my DSLR at 720p 50fps.
I then imported the video and audio I had been lip syncing to into FCPX.
I sped up the video by x2 (equivalent to speeding it up 200%)
    Retime>Fast 2X
Layered the PROPER normal speed audio back over the top and all was fine.
    Test video complete.
(You can ignore the 65% slowed down audio I mentioned earlier if you like, that was just an example of a slower than 50% audio test)
Firstly what I really want to do is to be able to slow the AUDIO down as much as possible (But still within the restraints of only being able to adjust FCPX retiming within a whole 1 percentage in the final video edit), but have the AUDIO of the song as near to/under 12 minutes as possible.
I will then re-record the video again to this new slowed down audio.
Secondly I will speed up the video from 12 minutes to 4 minutes.
Thirdly I will layer the correct 100% Normal AUDIO on top.
The FINISHED video should then look like everyone is wizzing around at high speed but the guitar playing/lyrics look like they are being played/sung at the normal speed.
Whatever happens (due to the constraints of FCPX) I need the calculations to work so that FCPX is retimed exactly to a whole 1% for the final video to sync up correctly.
So what I need to know in a nut shell is:-
What calculation do I use to work out the percentage to slow a 4 minute song down to a 12 minute song?
What calculation do I use to work out the percentage of how much I need to then speed the 12 minute video up to turn it back into a 4 minute video?
    My mind is melting
