Import and replace contacts (NOT merge)

Today I woke up to find my iCloud contact information duplicated WITHIN THE CONTACTS.
What I had before:

I have a vCard backup of my contacts database from a month ago with correct (non-duplicated data), but this backup is missing my most recently added 100 or so contacts.
Is there a way I can import this backup and have it overwrite (NOT MERGE with) existing contacts?

I have a question, are you sure that these cards are in the same account, it is possible that you have 2 accounts in Contacts, iCloud and On My Mac, and that you are in the All Contacts view. Select the Groups view on the View menu and see what you are seeing before deleting. It may be simpler than you think.

Not really a matter pf preference, at least to me. A lot of stuff when compositing my 3D renderings required full resolution and full bit depth, so it would have been mostly pointless to even bother rendering proxies when you cannot exactly discern things at half res or things look different at reduced bit-depths. And I think technical development simply overtook what proxies once were meant for. It's simply easy enough to work on full throttle these days because you have sufficient hardware and storage space.

Contacts not merging automatically on Z10

Hi,
My contacts are not merging automatically on my Z10. I have 2 sets of contacts, Gmail and ActiveSync but very few are merging automatically. What field are analyzed for this to work?

You would need to first use iTunes to sync the app to your iPhone. Then use the app to back up your contacts. It will create a vCard (.csv file) as an attachment to an email that you send to yourself. Open the email and double-click on the attachment to import the contacts to your Mac.
The app will back up all your contacts so when you import them to your Mac you may end up with duplicates. If this occurs, open Address Book (Contacts if you're running Mountain Lion) and go to Card>Look For Duplicates, then merge any duplicates that are found. I'm not sure it will maintain the original contact groups but it should import the contacts belonging to the groups. i.e., you may have to re-create your groups, then drag and drop the appropriate contacts into the "non-iCloud" groups that you are trying to recover.

ITunes Import CD "Replace existing" not working as expected.

To replicate problem:
Import CD using AAC encoder / iTunes Plus setting. Audio files are created. E.g. "foo.m4a" 15MB in size
Eject CD.
Change import settings to Apple Lossless Encoder.
Re-import CD using new settings.
Dialog box appears stating songs already imported and asks if user wants to replace existing songs and import again.
Select "Replace Existing" button.
iTunes imports CD again and creates file "foo 1.m4a" 45MB in size and keeps existing file "foo.m4a".
This is not how I would expect "Replace Existing" to behave. I'm expecting the original file to be deleted and replaced by the newly imported file.
However I'm thinking that iTunes keeps the existing file because it has all of the metadata regarding play counts, etc and iTunes refers to this even though only the new version of the file shows on iTunes. If so, it's one way to fill up your hard drive.
Any thoughts would be appreciated before I submit a bug report to Apple.

Still happening even with the latest version of iTunes. Appears to be random - sometimes it overwrites, sometimes it creates secondary copies. Frustrating!

Following download of version 23.0.1 I lost all previous history but not bookmarks. How do I recover old history? Recovery in "import and backup" does not help

My remembered and retained history was going back quite a few months. Following update of Firefox to 23.0.1 I lost all my history and Firefox only retains websites visited after the new version was installed. My bookmarks have been retained. I tried Recover in "Import and backup" but it only goes back to the date of the new installation. I tried places.sqlite in "Roaming" but there is only one with today's date. Is there a way to recover the lost history? Why did Firefox lose it? Will it happen averytime Firefox updates?

Backup your bookmarks manually. If you have been using the "import" you may have already lost some information by overwriting it. As a matter of course you should always save current bookmarks manually before using any restores.

That way you can ensure you are able to restore the complete current set. Put your .json backup file somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths. The Windows Desktop or removable media would be suitable.
Firefox does create some autobackups of bookmarks but does not do anything about backing up the History. Luckily Windows probably backs up previous versions of your file ''places.sqlite'' and that is the database with History and bookmarks in it. See if you can recover a recent version of that, it will restore your history up to the date of the restored file.

Afterwards import your more recent bookmarks from wherever they were saved. The import overwrites the slightly older bookmarks from the Windows file.
You my also then wish to install and run the addon places maintenance.

That may be used to check and repair the places.sqlite database. It will give a short status report. Note if the places.sqlite runs out of space it starts deleting History.
In future you my wish to routinely create occasional backups of your profile or at least your places.sqlite

I have 5 iPhones and they are all on the family plan, so we all use the same account and now all of our contacts have merged together after the update to ios5. What do I do?

your iCloud storage isnt part of your phone, that is a back up for your phone, you have to delete things on your phone, so I recommend backing up your photos to your computer or iCloud since im sure thats whats taking up all your storage, then delete the photos on your phone and then update your phone using iTunes on your computer.

Apple script to search and replace in notes

I've tested this on my laptop and it works, but I STRONGLY suggest that you back up your mail folder before trying it yourself, and (if possible) that you set up a few notes in a little used or dummy account and test it before you run it on your actual notes.
I also make no guarantees about what will happen if these notes are synched to other devices. It probably won't explode your computer, but...

File/Import and Page Layout not working anymore

I have a question about old software: FrameMaker 6.0 on a Mac. (While Adobe encouraged me to purchase this in 2001 for the chemistry textbook I am writing, I had invested to much to abandon it when Adobe abandoned the Mac version a few years later.)
I have imported dozens of images files into the 750 page book and FrameMaker has accepted both tif and jpg formats. The way I did it was to create an anchored frame in the textbook, click on it, and then File>Import and select the image file and then choose whether I wanted it to be referenced or actually in the text. All of this worked fine... until a couple of days ago.
Problems
1. I no longer get Import as an option under File and
2. FrameMaker no longer recognizes tif and jpg files under "All Readable Documents" when I do File>Open. I have to click on Show All Files to see them.
As a result I am unable to import any tif or jpg files into the FrameMaker textbook.
What's curious is that I have 6.0 installed on both a G4 and a PowerBook and this problem has occurred on both at the same time.
3. And I just discovered that when I do Format/Page Layout the half a dozen or so custom formats that I had are no longer listed.
So what has caused this loss of memory for Framemaker that it can no longer do what it has done for me for years. (I am somewhat sympathetic to it's memory loss myself as a 78 year old user.)
The G4 has been unplugged recently but in the past it has been unplugged for a week or so and there were no problems.

I don't know if read-only files are recognized by FrameMaker to the point where it will dim commands that need to write to the files.
It's always a good idea on Mac to repair permissions with Disk Utility - make sure you have good backups, just in case.
Have you tried saving a file that can't import as MIF, then opening the MIF version to restore the file, and perhaps lose any corruption in it? This is called the "MIF Wash."
I think the latest Mac OS that FrameMaker can work with is system 9, or the Classic simulator that runs on the OS X release called Tiger. I'm sure you'd know if you changed operating systems in this period. Classic won't run on Intel Macs.
I have no other clues about what might cause this, except the general thought that something has changed on your systems or in the files you're working with. Does the problem persist in a brand-new file you create on your local drive? If you're working with FM files on a network, have you tried the process with files on your local computer drive? Have you quit FrameMaker and restarted your Macs? Any change? If you have a cloned bootable backup of your stuff from before the problem arose, you might want to try cloning your problematic drive to a new bootable backup, then restoring the known good clone, to see if it works.

In the calendar side bar, the groups titled "On my Mac" and "iCloud" will not merge?

I recently updated my Macbook to Mavericks and my phone is already updated to IOS7.
In iCal, there is a side bar, and there are 3 groups...
"On my Mac"
"iCloud"
"US Holidays"
Since all my main events are in the group "On my Mac" they do not sync with my phone because they are not in icloud.
I need to find a way to merge the groups "On my Mac" and "iCloud" in order for my events to sync with my phone.

Address book and iPhone contacts not syncing

I have just got an iPhone 4. However, I now realise that all of the contact info that I'd been adding over a very long time to my old iPhone 3G has not come across. None of it seems to have synced with the address book on my iMac. Why is this so? It seems that the iMac address book has been overriding my iPhone contacts during the sync (which I do very regularly). Can I get this info back from my Time Machine backup?

Go into System Preferences -> iCloud. Firstly check that Contact syncing is enabled, and then check that you are signed into the same Apple ID.
Otherwise turn Contact syncing off and then back on. Then select to merge when prompting.

Separate Work and personal CONTACTS (not BB Balance)

Is there an alternative way to have separate CONTACTS (work and personal) in a BB Z10 for us whom do not have BB Balance. I just want this for the contacts, and perhaps the text messages, I do not need the security and all other features that Balance or a BES provides... If not, do you guys know if BLACKBERRY is planning on doing this for a future update? Seems like a very useful feature...

Open Contacts, at the bottom - All, Search, select 'New Group' create Group Name then add contacts.
Suggest you name them 1business and 1private etc., then the groups will be at the top of the list. Existing contacts will just be duplicated in Groups.

Import and rename - backup not renamed

When I import from card and tell LR to rename photos, even if DNG convert too, no problem with the rename going to the original COPY TO location. However, when I tell import to make a backup the images are NOT renamed. Is there any way to get the backed up images to be renamed in the same manner as the original COPY TO imported images.

 It's something I'll never use, as I disllike the idea of backing up photos I've no use for. Mileage varies, tho, and it's a good system in some instances.

I have a program and I wish to import a package that I've made. I have tried to do this with:

Iphone 6 and ipad contacts not synching with icloud

I've noticed that a few of my contacts on my ios devices have not synched with my contacts list in icloud. I've made sure icloud is the default contacts
for both iphone 6 and 4th Gen ipad but they still dont show in the cloud. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Persistence pays off: so initially, CS5 was not recognizing my Epson Perfection Photo V700. I reloaded the Epson software twice and using the mac menu for printers and scanners tried to get it to operate. no dice. Finally, on the third try, I went to Finder to look under applications software, found the epson software and clicked on that, and finally got the Epson scan window to open. So now, even tho i can't open it from inside CS5, i can still get the image into CS5 easily by clicking on "open" and going to finder. (Still good to know about Vuescan tho.)
