Import audio using dsr-11 as AtoD converter

Cassette audio player -> Sony DSR-11->firewire -> thunderbolt.
FCP sees the DSR-11 AND plays the sound - but refuses to record the data.
I am trying to use a Sony DSR-11 to convert (digitize) some audio tapes of a person speaking in real time and pass that data on to FCP.
When I play the cassette, and press the record button on the DSR-11, and then select file/event import - I can hear the audio clearly.
the time imported on the left starts to increment -- but the " data captured " on the top right says " no data.
What's up with this?  I selected audio only.  I can hear the audio -- it has to be digital.
I am so close -- it is just frustrating.
I might have go buy a cheap Roxio converter instead of using this $1600 A to D unit.  Aaarghhh.
latest version of FCP, Yosemite, 2013 iMac with i7 and fusion drive  (the Beast)

I guess my main question is this :  What do people use on a Mac?  I have always heard of musicians and editors using it for audio, and now I have a $3500 machine and it won't deal with plain audio on a usb???????
just color me perplexed.  but really - what are people using?
It simply looks like you are missing a driver for a particular usb device. What device is it? Did you actually try it? Does it appear in System Profile? Does it appear in System Preferences->Sound?
I have both a Griffin iMic (which is a nice usb audio input and output device made for the mac, years ago) and a cheap usb audio "pen" with audio in and out.
They both work without any driver installation in Yosemite, just plug and play. So the idea that Yosemite can't handle usb audio is simply not true.
Note that neither of these options are meant for high quality professional audio. I hope someone with more expertise on audio in OS X can chime in.

  • Imported Audio Not Sample Rate Converted?

I received some audio files for a project that were accidentally sent at 48k instead of the 44.1 I need.
Isn't Logic supposed to automatically do the sample rate conversion if you have the little settings box ticked for "convert sample rates for imported audio"?
I can't get it to work. I use the audio bin "add audio files", and import the 48k files. They get imported, but remain at 48k, unchanged, after import.
Is this another bug or is there some part of the process I'm missing?

  • How important is using optical audio, since no surround?

I'm out of optical inputs on my A/V receiver. How important is using the digital optical audio output, since there is no surround sound on the Apple TV?
Is using analog audio cables that bad, since the content on Apple TV is stereo to begin with?
    Thanks for the help.

I don't think the issue will be surround sound since surround sound isn't supported by the tv, although as capaho points out there are some files floating around out there that appear to work with the tv, however as far as I know these are all test files and there isn't actually any content as such available.
The issue for you will be one of quality, which of course means different things to different people. Personally I can only tell the difference between analogue and digital sound on some tunes and my personal taste in music does not always include those tunes (more of a Rolling Stones listener than Debussy) , so I'm quite happy to use analogue audio for my set up. Whether you are happy to do so will be one of personal taste.

  • Video faster than audio when use Adobe Media Encoder to convert f4v to mp4

I am using Adobe Captivate 5 on a  mac record a demonstration, and I have published my project to .f4v. Now I am using Adobe Media encoder to convert the .f4v file to .mp4 (to play on an ipod). The output LOOKS good, but the video is running much faster than the audio. To be clear, the audio is running at the correct pace, but the video is going by much too quickly.

From Captivate, I tried changing the fps to a variety of speeds (12, 20, 30, 40, 60) when publishing to f4v. Then in Adobe Media Encoder, when I converted to mp4, I tried keeping the fps the same as the source f4v, reducing it, or increasing it.  After all these experiments, I found that changing the fps in Adobe Media Encoder had no effect at all. Only changing the fps in the source f4v had an effect.  Reducing it to 12 made the probelm worse (the video went by even faster), and increasing it as high as 60 made a SLIGHT improvement, but not enough to get things in sync. Changing the key frame distance in AME had no effect.

I've imported a giant cd collection for my boss in wav format for the best quality audio using iTunes version 11.1.1.  I need to transfer this library to our Music workstation using iTunes 11.0.1.  That workstation version of iTunes can't be upgraded for compatability reasons with other software using iTunes.  When I try to transfer the library I lose all of the CD metadata and end up with only track names.  Is there a way to transfer everything along with the metadata?

Not easily.  WAV format does not store tag information in the file.  Realize both AIFF (equivalent to WAV) and Apple Lossless (full quality but smaller files) do, so WAV was unfortunately the worst format to chose.
If you have to go with what you have you will have to explore exporting the library as .xml, moving it and the files to the other computer, then rebuilding a lower version library with the two sets.  I am not sure if you can do it with the library.xml file that already exists or if it too differs according to version.  You may end up having to export the files as a playlist.  You will, of course, lose artwork too, though you can try fetching it from the iTunes Store later.
Some of what you need to do is outlined in these articles though you have the added limitation that you are not building a library of the same version.  (It really is a piity you choose WAV, otherwise you could have simply added the ripped files and most of the data would have traveled with them.)

Not sure you can do anything about this. I get vaiable import speeds - a lot depends on the actual disc. The Read Write spec is 24X but I rarely see speeds close to this.

  • Adobe Presenter 9 and PowerPoint 2013 - Missing Import Audio from PowerPoint button

I am only able to intermitantly use the Import button in Adobe Presenter 9 to Import Audio from PowerPoint. Why would I be able to do it on some presentations but not all? I thought it was an audio conversion issue but even when I convert the audio (when prompted by PowerPoint) it doesn't always allow me to import it.

I have found a solution if the original PowerPoint was a ppt file, follow these steps:
File > Save As a pptx file
Close PowerPoint (this helps with not corrupting the file)
    Re-open the pptx file
    File > Convert
Save with a new file name (this helps with not corrupting the file)
You should now have the Import from Presentation button if you go to the Presenter tab and click the Import button
I have not found a solution for pptx files yet.

  • Importing Audio for ppt files in Captivate

How do you import audio and sync over multiple powerpoint slides? I'm using Captivate 6

    Welcome,
But this is a Captivate forum, not a PPT forum.  If you use Captivate only for converting ppt-slides maybe a plug-in would be a better idea (Adobe Presenter, iSpring).
Record the audio in Captivate, using the Audio menu. You'll get one audio clip for each slide. And then you use the timeline to synchronize the appearance of objects. But if you are importing PPT-slides that have already animations and timings, you have to know that in CP you end up with a movie file, a recording of the PPT-slide, so synchronizing with a movie is not that easy as you perhaps know. While recording the audio you can watch the movie play in CP.

  • Can't import audio in AE 7.0

After Effects Freezes up when I try to import an .mp3 file (I've tried multiple) ASlso I noticed that when I try to import audio, it tries to import it as a footage item, and there's no option to change it to just audio. Thanks all

    >it tries to import it as a footage item, and there's no option to
    >change it to just audio
Which is correct. Audio files are AV items. What operating system are you on and where do those MP3s come from? Perhaps they are DRM-protected, have variable bit rates or are surround, al lof which may prevent AE from importing them 'cos it doesn't support those features. Generally you should not use MP3s in AE, but convert them to PCM (WAV or AIFF) files.

  • .mp4 file only imports audio track into assets. Where is the video?

I have a 1080p WMV file that I converted to MPEG H.264 using MPEG Streamclip for use in DVD Studio Pro. When I import the file into DVD SP I only get the audio track. I opened the file in Quicktime Player just to make sure that I didn't export it incorrectly and the audio and video are both there. What am I doing wrong in DVD SP that is preventing the video from importing?

As long as you're converting the original for DVD, try exporting to MPEG2.

  • Error when importing audio

    Hi
I'm trying to import audio for a slide and as background, but the importing process seems to start and then I get a message saying "Unable to decode and import the selected WAV MP3 file. What could be the problem? Thanks

    Hi there
What format is the file you are importing? WAV, MP3 or something else?
Captivate will balk if it's WAV format and encoded as MP3. You will likely find you have to convert the file to a different format in order to be successful.
For starters I'd try using one of the files supplied with Captivate and see if they will import. If so, your Captivate install is probably fine and you are dealing with an encoding issue as described above. But if you can't get even the supplied files to insert properly, something is wrong in Captivate town and the problems are deeper than that. In that case, the link below may help.

  • Recording and importing Audio in 24Bit/48KHz...not working??

I cant figure out how I can set my project to 24bit/48....
I need to record and import Audio in 24/48 in my project.
I've already set Settings/Assets/Convert audio file sample rate when importing.....but when I drag an apple loop from the Media/Loops....it doesn't convert at all......it still show 16/44.1 in the bin.
I'm really lost here....and can't figure a way to set my project into 24/48. Am I missing something here? I use to be a Cubase user and Cubase does converts the files that I imported to my project.I understand that if I press control C in the audio file that I imported in the bin and that will change to what ever bits or KHz that I want to,but this isn't helping cause when I import the audio file, the file is already in the tempo of the project, but if I convert audio file from the bin.... the tempo will change due to the difference in Bit.
    Please help me out here...Thanks!

    Pancenter,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, according to the specs on page 73 of the Mac Pro User Guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Mac_Pro_UserGuide.pdf), it is spec'd to record 24-bit @ 48 kHz & 96k Hz. Here is the text from that page:
    Optical digital audio in
Based on a typical situation with playback of 1 kHz, 0dBFS 24-bit sine wave, unless
    otherwise specified below.
Â Input sample rate: 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz
    Â Signal-to-noise ratio: Greater than130 dB
Â Total harmonic distortion + noise: Less than -130 dB (0.00001 percent)
    Additional specs include:
    Optical Digital Audio Specifications
    Â Data format: Sony/Phillips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) protocol (IEC60958-3)
Â Connector type: TOSLINK optical (IEC60874-17)
    Â Bits per sample: 16-bit or 24-bit
Therefore, I interpret these specs as saying that the Mac Pro is spec'd to record 24/96 without the need for a third party audio card.
Please reply back if you have a different interpretation or you concur with mine. I am interested as I have escalated the issue to the Apple's executive level and am open to being wrong if that is the case. In July, Apple Corporate Customer Relations informed me that engineering was able to duplicate my problem and are working on a fix. This month, Executive Customer Relations informed me that they are not able to address the problem at this time. I informed them that I consider Apple to be in breach of contract.

  • Automator Action "Import Audio Files" error message

I use this automator action daily when it is activated via an alarm time in iCal. It is the 3rd workflow run in a series of 7 worlflows to create audio files while I'm at work (I record XM programming for use later on my iPod). Since I upgraded to OSX Lion yesterday, I'm getting a new error message I've never seen and I can't find any info on it. Can anyone help? The error message in a popup dialogue box is:
The action “Import Audio Files” encountered an error.
Check the actionʼs properties and try running the workflow again.
Under the Log for the workflow I get this message:
The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -1712.) (-1712)
The imported audio file does actually get inputted into iTunes and converted properly via iTunes, but the error creates two problems. One is the source file isn't deleted after the action runs (which is a checkbox option in that particular action). This isn't a big deal, because I can create another workflow seperately to delete the file, so I'm not as concerned with that. The major problem is that the error dialoge box displays and the sebsequent workflows that are scheduled to run right after this one can't run becasue Automator is occupied with the error message.
I'm looking for any advice I can find, I've been using this series of workflows for a long time without issue, but seems like everytime there is a new OS I have to go through the geriatrics of figuring out what slight changes apple made to the Automator actions.
    Thanks for reading,
    Chris

    Hi,
I just solved the problem pretty easily: earlier, on Snow Leopard, automator had to be set to work in 32bit instead of 64bit otherwise there has been a lot of error messages.
I tried to do the same with iTunes on Lion and, oh miracle, it works:
close iTunes then go to Applications -> right click on iTunes -> read informations -> check the box to run the app in 32bits and restart iTunes and .... that's it.
I work in a local radio in Belgium and I rely on automator on an everyday basis to download then add prerecorded broadcasts to iTunes to be aired with Lion server and I was stuck since a few weeks because of that problem. Now I can finally work again :-)
English is not my native language so please forgive me for my mistakes ... :-)
