Import Backed-up Library in iPhoto '09
Hi all,
This summer, the hard drive of my MBP crashed. While i lost a few photos, most of them where backed using Time Machine on an External Hard Drive. As I was trying to copy them back, I just dragged the iPhoto Library file onto iPhoto. This was definitely not successful as it did copy all the photos, but from about 8,000 they became over 20,000 as the 'faces' feature saved each face in the library as a different photo. This also changed all my ex-well-organized 121 events to about 200 extremely disorganized new events. What do I do? I just want to import a backed up library to iPhoto so that it is just as it was when i saved it.
Thank you in Advance!
I wish it could be so easy, but I have some new pictures I have on my current *screwed up* library that I have imported and that I only have over there. I tried selecting all the bad events and drag them to the trash but that did not work. Do you have any advice?
What did not work?
Did you try to move these events to the "iPhoto trash" using the iPhoto program or the system trash using the finder?
For now I suggest dragging the existing bad iPhoto library to the desktop and dragging the old one ot the pictures folder and getting it working - then you probably will have two choices - trying to rebuild the bad library with iPhoto library manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and using it to move events to the now working older library - or using just the original photos form the newer, bad library and importing them into the now working older library - if you need details post back with the method you want to try

How can I import my Aperture Library in iPhoto ?
Hi guys,
I use Aperture 3 since 2 years but I would like to go back to iPhoto ('11) because I don't need all the options in Aperture...
I know that I can easily import photos from the Aperture library to iPhoto but the "normal" method lose all the faces...
Do you fnow an other solution to keep all datas in iPhoto (photos, faces and places) ?
Thaks a lot, JuAperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
If you want to revert to iPhoto:
1. Export all your Masters
2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.

How do I import my photo library to iPhoto?
I recently got a new mac and a new iPhone, so I imported my photos from iphoto which was my old camera roll and transfered it to my new iPhone. On my iPhone I now have three albums, Camera Roll and Photo Library and another album that is the same as photo library. First can I delete photo library or the other album? Second my more important question, how do I import my photo library from my iphone to my new mac? Thanks
It has said this for about a month now and I would just hide iPhoto since I could not close it. I have not needed to turn off my computer until now. But now it is a problem because I can not upgrade my computer

How to import the old library of iPhoto in a new imac with aperture 3.4.4
Hi guys I'm a happy owner of a new 27-inch iMac. I previously had a G5 and I had my old iPhoto library on an external hard drive. Now I would like to import this Iphoto library in Aperture. I do not want to create duplicates and I would not want the photos to be saved on the internal hard disk but in my exterenal hard disk.
After importing the Iphoto library can I delete it from the external drive?
What procedure should I use to make this?
Thanks in advance for your help and answer!

In addition to Terence Devlin's advice just a few words of caution, since merging and upgrading libraries will be a major reconstruction of the libraries - better be safe than sorry:
Check your available free disk space. Merging libraries will need temporarily plenty of additional disk space, more than the size of the library that will be imported.
Before upgrading your iPhoto library, check, if your backup of the iPhoto Library is current. Don't merge the libraries without having a current backup of both libraries - your Aperture library and your iPhoto library.
Merging and upgrading libraries is safest, if both libraries do not have any inconsistencies and permission issues. Run the "Library First Aid Tools" on both to repair the database and to repair the permissions, before you do anything else. To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the key combination ⌥⌘, while double clicking the library in question.
After you imported the upgraded iPhoto library into your Aperture library, as Terence Devlin explained, check the result of your import carefully, if it is complete. There may be referenced images, that fail to import, or images synced from Photo Stream, Facebook, or something. Do not delete your old iPhoto Library, until you are sure, that every image has been transferred correctly and can be opened and edited.
Regards and Good Luck!

Trouble importing old photo library to iPhoto 06
I just updated to iLife/iPhoto 06. When importing old photo library which is 7-8,000 photos, I got 24,000 + images incl. images of computer icons, demo photos, images that look like pieces from web pages (headers, part of photos etc), 4-5 copies of my own photos, some look like they are "pixilated", which the original wasn't. Any idea of what happened and how to fix this, short of manually deleting each image that doesn't belong?
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)Terence,
Tks, I kind of suspected that. I'm new to Macs and more used to PCs, and by no means good at either system, so it sometimes gets confusing.
Anyway - Here's the list from the iPhoto Library folder - I did copy & paste, but it didn't paste in the same order it is listed in the iPhoto Library window. I guess it should all be there though.

By the way, here's another question, a bit off the current subject: Sometimes we have trouble playing video clips downloaded from our camera. Sometimes iPhoto will play the audio but no picture, sometimes the other way around, and there don't seem to be any common thread one way or the other. Recently a bunch of clips that used to play audio only "repaired themselves" and are not playing fine. But others are only playing video with no sound. Any idea of whats going on?
Thanks

Dropped back up library into iPhoto and everything is gone
I have photos on an old time machine that I needed to download. For some reason I was told I di not have permissions to open photo (I assume because I changed my user nmae and pass on a newer computer) I was able to access the photos and and I dragged the library folder to desktop. I opened my iPhoto and dropped the file onto my existing library...it highlighted but when I thought it would download everything I received a message that it could not read one of the files and should it continue...I pressed yes but nothing happened except every one of my photos that were in my current file are gone. I have spent the weekend organizing them all...where can they be and what happened? I am using iPhoto 09 812. New MacBook Pro OS 10.6.3. Thank you

you can not access Time Machine backups via the finder - you must access them via Time Machine using the TM User interface - for detailed questions about TM try the TM forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1342

You never import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library
I assume that you made a backup of your library prior to starting this project. This would be a good time to restore it and start over.

That is not clear but restoring the back up from before doing this would be the place to start
Then use TM to restore the old iPhoto database to a different location (tell TM to keep both files) - you then depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library option to change between libraries. once both libraries are tested and working correctly you may want to look at iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to facilitate merging them or working with two libraries

In iPhoto preferences >Advanced, I originally 'ticked' the "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library" box. I have now installed a Drobo double back-up system and would like to delete these 'items' on my hard drive. Is this possible?
Not with iPhoto.
You can relocate the masters using Aperture if you're using the latest versions of both iPhoto and Aperture. However, if you're planning on using iPhoto going forward having the masters on one disk and the Library on another is not a good idea. Have a read of this

I imported to library in iPhoto and now have an album called com.apple.iLifeMediaBrowser which contains a lot of pics that were deleted plus a bunch of other pics......How do I move pics from this album to their original album???
What is your iPhoto version? I can ask this thread to be moved to the appropriate iPhoto forum where you might get more replies.

How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library? It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library. I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one. They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device." I hadn't touched the camera. The message came by itself. I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit. Opening it back up, the pictures were gone. Can somebody help me?
What version of iPhoto are you running? Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Newly imported pictures not appearing in iPhoto '08 Library
So, while I was importing a whole slew of photos today, iPhoto became unresponsive (I think because of two RAW images I inadvertantly left on the camera). I had to force quit iPhoto and when I relaunched it, none of the photos imported show up in my library. They are available if I browse "All Images," but if I try to drag and drop any of them into the iPhoto Library it says they're already there.
Advice?Never access photos that are managed by iPhoto in your All Images search. It's a good way to damage your Library.
Surefire fix: restore from back up.
Other than that:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -

IPhoto 8 wont import or recognize Library
Can you help ?
My iPhoto Library is stored on an external 500GB iomega and has been spot on until my nephew 'did something' while I was out. Iphoto now has no photos at all and I cant import the iPhoto Library even when open>alt>select library. I have tried open>alt+cmd to re-build, still no joy. The Library is 14GB so photos are still there but simply wont go back into iphoto. Re-installed version 8 but cant get any up-dates as version 9 is out now ! EAK !!
Oh dear, can anyone help ? I am going mad over this and getting pretty stressed
Thanks so much in advance
MotoeuroWelcome to the Apple Discussions.
If you go Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the external disk, and iPhoto doesn't open it, then it suggests that iPhoto no longer sees that Library as valid.

Importing Picture from iPhoto 9 back up discs to iPhoto 11
As my computers hard drive was crashing a few months ago I backed up my entire iPhoto 9 library to discs (2 discs in total). Now I have iPhoto 11 and when I insert the discs in my computer I can see them in iphoto but I don't see an option to import them to the new library. When I go to import photos it just lets me select things such as my desktop, iPhoto is not an option. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?
Oh and by the way, when I backed the old library up to disc, I used the official iphoto library backup (to preserve faces/ dates/ etc). I did not just copy and paste them to the disc.
Thanks for any help!!Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How did you create these two disks? Did you use the Share/Burn menu in iPhoto? If so then you'll get a mini library on the disk that you burned to that, when mounted on the Desktop with iPhoto open, will show up in the left hand pane of iPhoto. There you can drag the library disk icon onto the Events icon to import all of the photos on the disk into the library.

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up. My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive. Both drives are backed up on Time Machine. I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac. This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data. Will this work using Set Up Assistant?
Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one. See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD. Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select. Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows. Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items. That may take a few mintutes on a large library. -
And how do I turn off FACES?
I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto. It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
That is it
