Can't import bookmarks from Safari - folder empty
Can't import Safari bookmarks -- folder is empty. Working on iMac flat-panel PPC OS X 10.4.11; Safari v4.1 -- Firefox v3.6.6 (just upgraded! sucks.)
Yes, I couldn't see anything starting with H3, Only bookmark names.
I assume I am checking correctly? For example, Sydney Ferries - Home is one bookmark. When I open the .Html file and click this, the webpage opens on Sydney Ferries.
Thanks for your reply. -
Importing Bookmarks from an HTML Folder
I had to have a new hard drive install. The tech created a file call old back up which have all of my bookmarks in a HTML folder call favorites. Is there any way to import the whole folder into firefox 4.0 I can go in and do them one at a time, but I would rather just do the folder because it is already organize with subfolders.
The file that stores bookmarks may be locked or damaged which is preventing them from being deleted. Try deleting places.sqlite as shown on this site - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Firefox will try to import bookmarks from a backup when you restart Firefox. If you do not want that to happen, in the profile folder where you found places.sqlite, there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing a few files with extension .json, delete all of those files. Also delete or rename bookmarks.html in the profile folder to prevent Firefox trying to import bookmarks from that file. -
Hi,
I was wondering how to Import Bookmarks from an old firefox profile to a new one ? My laptop stopped working but I managed to copy my firefox data from the mozilla appdata folder. I want to now copy my old bookmarks to my new firefox profile on my new laptop. I have tried searching online for guidance but most methods mention a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file. However, I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" file. Among the files in profile I am trying to import FROM are a "bookmarks" html file(which seems to only contain the default firefox bookmarks) as well as "places.sqlite-shm" and "places.sqlite-wal" files. Although, the NEW profile on my new laptop I am trying to import TO DOES have a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file.
I would be most grateful for any help received. Many thanks in advance for your help and for your timethe-edmeister said

f458italia,
Per your screenshot - you don't have the /bookmarksbackup/ folder nor the places.sqlite file - your bookmarks don't exist in that old Profile. cor-el mentioned another file that is missing, so that Profile wouldn't have been operational.
Are you sure that you don't have another Profile for that user account?

I want to import bookmarks from Internet Explorer 8, but the import link under file in Firefox is ghosted out and doesn't allow me access. How can I access the Firefox import function?A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

The Import tab of the file drop down menu will not highlight (function) when I follow all the instructions of firefox help. I want to import bookmarks from Internet explorer. At no time does the Import tab ever react when I move the cursor over it.
Thanks* Make sure that you not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode
* In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and features like visited links are disabled and not showing
* You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed
* You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
* To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>

It usually works better if you export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.

* Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File

Imported bookmarks from firefox
I have imported bookmarks from Firefox in to Safari that are not allowing Safari to function properly. They've given themselves folder names of "imported 2/7/07". Since I did this Safari is slow to open, it goes into not responding several times before opening. When I try to delete these folders Safari locks up totally. Is there a way to reset, reinstall or use terminal to delete these bookmark folders?
Only one collection folder should have been created, unless you selected "import" more than one time.
Because Safari is slow to open, buggy etc. one option would be to delete the existing Safari bookmark file and try the import again.
With that said, when you imported the Bookmarks, where you adding to your existing bookmarks (other than the standard Apple bookmarks), or were you starting anew? If it is the latter, go to the User Library>Safari folder and move to the trash the Bookmarks.plist file. Also, in the Preferences folder move the com.apple.safari.plist to the desktop. Restart Safari. A new Bookmarks folder is created, with the Apple Standard bookmarks.
Since this creates a new preference file, you'll need to reset your Safari preferences to your liking, plus any custom settings found in the Edit Menu (spelling) or View Menu (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons in the "Customize Address Bar" ).
Does Safari now seem functional? If it is, then go to import bookmarks. Here is the Finder path to the Firefox bookmarks:
User Library>Applications Support>Firefox>Profiles>onxd8rpi.default>bookmarks.html. Select it.
Then open Safari's Bookmark Manager by clicking on the Book Icon. Once open, you ought to see the Firefox Bookmarks on the left side under "collections". You can modify, redistribute, create new folders from there. I suggest moving the folders up to your Bookmarks Bar collection, so they are accessible from the Bar.

I have quite a few bookmarks in my current default browser (CM Browser) and don't relish the thought of manually recreating them all. I also want to keep them organized by categories. The folder system is very helpful.
The permission model for Android does not allow other apps access to their settings. Chrome and the Android stock browser have some special access rules that allow other apps to see the bookmarks. So it is only possible to import bookmarks from Chrome or the stock Android browser.

I've followed directions for importing from HTML file and importing from another browser to no avail. I did get empty folders importing from another browser. Just empty folders no bookmarks.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
TomDid you manage to export the bookmarks in Safari to an HTML file like posted above?
You need to do that first.<br />
Then you can open the HTML file in a (plain) text editor to check whether sections that start with "<H3" have a FOLDED attribute.<br />
If that is the case then you need to remove all the occurrences of the FOLDED attribute and save the file as plain text.<br />
After that you should be able to import the file in Firefox.

Importing bookmarks from internet explorer doesn't work
when i try to import bookmarks from internet explorer it say it's completed the import, but nothing was imported.
You can usually find the imported IE Favorites in a folder ("From Internet Explorer") at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu folder (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks).
If you can't find them in the folder ("From Internet Explorer") or otherwise have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.<br />
That way you also preserve any sorting that you may have done in IE with the Favorites.
* Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
* Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File
See "Import from another browser" and "Import from file":

How do I import bookmarks from a different PC installation?
I recently changed from a desktop to a laptop for my primary system when the desktop power supply failed. I was able to recover all desktop files by moving the HDD to an external USB enclosure.
Now I need to import the old extensive bookmark collection in Firefox 3.x to the laptop Firefox 3.x and combine it with the current bookmarks on the laptop.
How do I do this without destroying the bookmarks already on the laptop? Before you do this, backup your laptops bookmarks as shown in the first part of the backing up and restoring bookmarks article. This step should not be necessary but I am just playing it safe so you can restore them if required.
The process below will save a copy of your bookmarks from the laptop, next it will replace the bookmarks on the laptop with those that were on the desktop. Finally it will import the laptops bookmarks, adding them to those from the desktop.
Export the bookmarks on the laptop again, this time to an HTML file, for details see exporting bookmarks to an HTML file.
The next step is to restore the bookmarks from the HDD for the desktop. Follow the instructions in the backing up and restoring bookmarks article for restoring bookmarks, using the "Choose File" option. Now browse to the old profile folder on the HDD. For details of finding this folder see . Inside the profile folder there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json, select the one with the latest date. This will import those bookmarks, and in the process replace those that are on the laptop.
The final stage is re-importing the bookmarks from the HTML file that you exported above, for details see importing Bookmarks from an HTML File. This will add the bookmarks to those that were originally on the desktop.
If you are likely to have duplicate bookmarks, you can use the CheckPlaces add-on to remove them if you wish. -
MacBook Pro - FireFox 4
I was able in the past (earlier FireFox versions) to import bookmarks from Safari when clicking on the "Organize Bookmarks." This now is not available. Instead, under "file" there is an "import" option but it is NOT highlighted, i.e., it is not available for clicking. How do you import bookmarks from Safari (or any other browser) after you have used FireFox for a while. i.e., not when you first set it up, but later?"Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu.
The option to import can be disabled if you are in private browsing mode. To stop Firefox opening in private browsing mode do this:
# Open the Preferences window and go to the Privacy panel
# Change the setting "Firefox will" to "Remember history", alternatively if you set it to "Use custom settings for history", de-select the setting "Permanent Private Browsing mode" -
