Import Bookmarks from HTML

I am trying to import a Safari bookmarks.html file into Firefox. Your support page says go to "Bookmarks" select "Show All Bookmarks" and select "Import".
Please be advised that there is NO "Import" listing under "Show All Bookmarks"!
I am using a Mac OS X 10.8.5 and Firefox 36.0.1
Any help is most welcomed.
Regards,
Ability42

You can open the HTML file in TextEdit and remove all FOLDED attributes in the H3 tags (leave the H3 tags).
<pre><nowiki><DT><H3 FOLDED>Bookmarks Bar</H3> -> <DT><H3>Bookmarks Bar</H3></nowiki></pre>

  • Import bookmarks from html not working (YES, I know it really IS an html file and not JSON)

My objective is to make a global edit to the bookmarks in one folder. To do so, I exported to an HTML file, opened that file in Notepad, deleted all the other bookmarks, and did a search-and-replace to correct the ones I was trying to fix. Saved the file and attempted to import into Firefox. I *can* open the file and see the links, and I can use Import and Backup to get to the file and select it for import. However, after that, NOTHING happens.

Yes, does have .html extension and does work if opened in a tab. However, I just discovered that there was a missing > which proved to be the issue.
Once that was corrected, the import worked as it should.
Thanks! Your questions made me look again more closely -- I had overlooked that error MANY times earlier. :)

  • I want to import bookmarks from Safari but there is no import choice in the file menu

my firefox does not have the option to import my bookmarks, even though in Help it says it does. What do I do?

    Exporting bookmarks from Safari
Go to File->Export Bookmarks. Safari saves your bookmarks in an HTML file. Save the HTML file to the Desktop or any other location of your choice.
    Importing bookmarks to Firefox
Go to Bookmarks->Show all bookmarks. This will open up the Bookmarks Library.
    Click Import and Backup...
Select Import Bookmarks from HTML.. from drop down menu.
Locate your HTML file exported from Safari.
You can use Safari Bookmark Exporter to export bookmarks to an HTML file,if exporting to the HTML file is not supported by Safari.

  • Firefox 15.0.1 cannot import bookmarks from Safari 6.0.1

    Hello,
Firefox 15.0.1 cannot import bookmarks from Safari 6.0.1.
I have followed the steps below:
    1) Export all Safari bookmarks to an HTML file (File --> Export Bookmarks)
    2) Import bookmarks into Firefox (Bookmarks --> Show all bookmarks --> Import and Backup --> Import Bookmarks from HTML)
Firefox seems to load the HTML file, but the bookmarks never show up in Firefox.
Any thoughts about why this is happening?
    Best,
    Jaime.-

  • I can't import bookmarks from SAFARI 6.0.1 on a MAC to FIREFOX 15.0.1.

I've followed directions for importing from HTML file and importing from another browser to no avail. I did get empty folders importing from another browser. Just empty folders no bookmarks.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Did you manage to export the bookmarks in Safari to an HTML file like posted above?
You need to do that first.<br />
Then you can open the HTML file in a (plain) text editor to check whether sections that start with "<H3" have a FOLDED attribute.<br />
If that is the case then you need to remove all the occurrences of the FOLDED attribute and save the file as plain text.<br />
After that you should be able to import the file in Firefox.

  • How do I import Bookmarks from Firefox 28.0 into Firefox 29.0.1?

How do I import Bookmarks from Firefox 28.0 into Firefox 29.0.1? I am running OS X 10.7.5 and just updated Firefox from 28.0 to 29.0.1. How do I import my old 28.0 bookmarks into 29.0.1? I've tried all the suggestions but nothing works. WHERE are my old bookmarks? Help, please!

Your bookmarks can be imported and exported from the Library (Bookmarks Manager).
*Go to the clipboard icon, click Show All Bookmarks <i>OR</i> press Cmd + Shift + B
*Once there, you'll see Import and Backup (see screenshot), you have a choice to choose between backing up as a JSON (Import and Backup -> Backup) or HTML (Import and Backup - > Export bookmarks to HTML)
Once this is done and the file has been backed up, you can import them using the same method (Import & Backup -> Backup for JSON/Import & Backup -> Import bookmarks from HTML (HTML)
One of our awesome contributors explained the difference between a JSON backup and a HTML backup that is very explanatory:
Restoring a JSON backup will replace all your current bookmarks (you get a warning about that), so if you already have bookmarks that you wish to keep then export them to an HTML file before restoring the JSON backup.
You can import that HTML file after you have restored the JSON backup to get your current bookmarks back (you need to remove duplicates).
You can't import a JSON backup to add (merge) bookmarks.
Importing bookmarks from an HTML file adds the imported bookmarks to the already existing bookmarks, so you may need to remove duplicates.
An HTML backup doesn't support tags and annotations, so if you want to preserve those then you need to use a JSON backup.
A JSON backup doesn't preserve the website favicons, so you need to visit a website to get back that favicon.

  • Importing Bookmarks from an HTML Folder

I had to have a new hard drive install. The tech created a file call old back up which have all of my bookmarks in a HTML folder call favorites. Is there any way to import the whole folder into firefox 4.0 I can go in and do them one at a time, but I would rather just do the folder because it is already organize with subfolders.

The file that stores bookmarks may be locked or damaged which is preventing them from being deleted. Try deleting places.sqlite as shown on this site - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Firefox will try to import bookmarks from a backup when you restart Firefox. If you do not want that to happen, in the profile folder where you found places.sqlite, there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing a few files with extension .json, delete all of those files. Also delete or rename bookmarks.html in the profile folder to prevent Firefox trying to import bookmarks from that file.

  • How do I Import Bookmarks from one profile to another ? I have tried searching online but I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" Thanks

    Hi,
I was wondering how to Import Bookmarks from an old firefox profile to a new one ? My laptop stopped working but I managed to copy my firefox data from the mozilla appdata folder. I want to now copy my old bookmarks to my new firefox profile on my new laptop. I have tried searching online for guidance but most methods mention a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file. However, I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" file. Among the files in profile I am trying to import FROM are a "bookmarks" html file(which seems to only contain the default firefox bookmarks) as well as "places.sqlite-shm" and "places.sqlite-wal" files. Although, the NEW profile on my new laptop I am trying to import TO DOES have a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file.
I would be most grateful for any help received. Many thanks in advance for your help and for your time

    f458italia,
Per your screenshot - you don't have the /bookmarksbackup/ folder nor the places.sqlite file - your bookmarks don't exist in that old Profile. ''cor-el mentioned another file that is missing, so that Profile wouldn't have been operational.''
Are you sure that you don't have another Profile for that user account?

  • The import tab on the file dropdown menu is not functional under any type ussage, I want to import bookmarks from internet explorer

The Import tab of the file drop down menu will not highlight (function) when I follow all the instructions of firefox help. I want to import bookmarks from Internet explorer. At no time does the Import tab ever react when I move the cursor over it.

    * Make sure that you not run Firefox in [[Private Browsing]] mode
    * In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and features like visited links are disabled and not showing
    * You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
It usually works better if you export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
    * Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
    * Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File

  • Imported bookmarks from firefox

I have imported bookmarks from Firefox in to Safari that are not allowing Safari to function properly. They've given themselves folder names of "imported 2/7/07". Since I did this Safari is slow to open, it goes into not responding several times before opening. When I try to delete these folders Safari locks up totally. Is there a way to reset, reinstall or use terminal to delete these bookmark folders?

Only one collection folder should have been created, unless you selected "import" more than one time.
Because Safari is slow to open, buggy etc. one option would be to delete the existing Safari bookmark file and try the import again.
With that said, when you imported the Bookmarks, where you adding to your existing bookmarks (other than the standard Apple bookmarks), or were you starting anew? If it is the latter, go to the User Library>Safari folder and move to the trash the Bookmarks.plist file. Also, in the Preferences folder move the com.apple.safari.plist to the desktop. Restart Safari. A new Bookmarks folder is created, with the Apple Standard bookmarks.
Since this creates a new preference file, you'll need to reset your Safari preferences to your liking, plus any custom settings found in the Edit Menu (spelling) or View Menu (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons in the "Customize Address Bar" ).
Does Safari now seem functional? If it is, then go to import bookmarks. Here is the Finder path to the Firefox bookmarks:
    User Library>Applications Support>Firefox>Profiles>onxd8rpi.default>bookmarks.html. Select it.
Then open Safari's Bookmark Manager by clicking on the Book Icon. Once open, you ought to see the Firefox Bookmarks on the left side under "collections". You can modify, redistribute, create new folders from there. I suggest moving the folders up to your Bookmarks Bar collection, so they are accessible from the Bar.

  • Run time error when trying to import bookmarks from firefox

When trying to import bookmarks from Firefox to Safari I get the following error message: "Run Time Error. This application has requested the Runtime  to terminate it in an unusual way." Safari does not function anymore and I have to close it. Can somebody help me? I am using a PC with Windows 7.

In the Bookmarks Manager (Library) there is a toolbar with the Back and Forward button and three other buttons (Organize, Views, Import & Backup).
    * The first (gear) button is the Organize button with basic edit menu items for bookmarks
    * The second button is the Views button that allows to change the sort order for viewing purposes (doesn't sort permanently).
    * The third (star) button is the Import & Backup button that allows to backup and restore a JSON backup and import and export an HTML backup and import bookmarks from other browsers.
Hover each button to see the tooltip or click each of them to see what they do.

  • I am importing bookmarks from Internet Explorer 9. If the bookmark has a subdirectory, I don't get the links in the subdirectory.

I am running Mozilla Firefox 20.0.1 under Windows 7 Ultimate.
I am trying to import bookmarks from Internet Explorer 9.0.15.
If the bookmark has a subdirectory, I don't get any of the links in the subdirectory.
This has not happened on my other computers:
Internet Explorer 8 under Windows XP Professional
Internet Explorer 9 under Windows 7 Professional

This incomplete importing sometimes happens for unknown reasons.
You can manually export your bookmarks from IE and then import them into Firefox using an HTML file as an intermediary format. This thread has the steps: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/835144 Only 1/3rd of my bookmarks imported from IE. How do I move the rest?]
    Does it work?

  • Importing bookmarks from internet explorer doesn't work

when i try to import bookmarks from internet explorer it say it's completed the import, but nothing was imported.

You can usually find the imported IE Favorites in a folder ("From Internet Explorer") at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu folder (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks).
If you can't find them in the folder ("From Internet Explorer") or otherwise have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.<br />
That way you also preserve any sorting that you may have done in IE with the Favorites.
    * Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
    * Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File
See "Import from another browser" and "Import from file":
