Import Cd's in m4a format?

Does anyone know how to import CD's in m4a format, I know I can play them but I don't know how to make them.
I share alot of music between my Linux box and Mac box and I like the format better than mp3.
Thanks in advance guys and girls

m4a is also known as AAC, try playing with grip, sound juicer, and whatever KDE uses to rip CD's, one of them ought to have an option to output as AAC/m4a.
If none of them do, you could always rip them to wav, and then encode it to aac yourself, with 'faac' afaik.

I have just bought a new macbook and trying to add all my music to my new itunes from a previous version of itunes (iTunes 9) in my seven year old Mac. I can import all the MP3 songs but iTunes ignores all the m4a format files. What to do? I have copied them into the music file along with the mp3 files but they still dont open in iTunes.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • Changing .m4a format

I have a lot of music that is in the .m4a format. Is
there a way to convert this to .mp3 or any other
format so that my music can be played on other mp3
    players?
I have tried going to Edit -> Preferences -> Importing -> Import using MP3 Encoder and then selecting an iTunes song previously purchased. I right click on the selection and choose 'Convert Selection to MP3.' I then receive the error '(name of song) cannot be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats.'
I also receive a similar error when I attempt to burn these songs to a cd. Hence the problem that I cannot play these songs with anything but my iPod. I want to play them in my car and through my home theather system (which doesn't read AAC).
    Please help!!

  • How do I convert an excel (2008) document to Numbers?  When I drag the Excel document onto the Numbers icon I get, "Import error.  The file format is invalid"

How can I convert an Excel (2008) document to Numbers.  When I drag the Excel document onto the Numbers icon I get, "Import error.  The file format is invalid.

That extension identifies the most current Excel file format, a format that can be opened by Numbers '09 (and by Numbers '08).
A check with Numbers '09 shows it capable of opening .xlsx files when right-clicked (and Numbers chose as the application to open, when double-clicked (if Numbers has been set as the default application to open this type of file, or when dragged to the Numbers icon in the dock.
I see two possibilities for Numbers inability to open it and the message you receive:
    1. The file is not actually an Excel file, and the sender has added the .xlsx extension to the filename manually.
    2. The file is an Excel file, but has somehow been corrupted.
Have you tried opening the file with a different application? The open source Office suites, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice and NeoOffice can also open .xlsx files. If they're unable to open this one, that would point toward the file itself being faulty. You can download these applications from their rspective websites, linked in the names above. All request a donation to support future development, but only Neo requires one to have been made recently, and that only for the current release (which won't be necessary to open .xlsx files).

  • How do I import movies with an AVI format taken with a digital SLR?

How do I import movies with an AVI format taken with a digital SLR?

If you cannot import using File Menu > Import Movies... You'll have to convert them on a Mac.
You will need to use a free app called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.
Basically, you drag the .mts file into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your codec. And it will save out to a .mov file and iMovie will edit this format like there was no tomorrow

  • Exporting and importing movies in iPhoto - unrecognised format

    hi
I am trying to export just a few movies from iphoto in my user account, to my daughters parental support account on the same mac. (I imported from her camera to my account by mistake and deleted them from her camera, but want them only to be on her account ..... )
It has worked fine for the photos.
I am selecting the movie files. File export, kind original. this exports a .AVI file which i have put in a shared folder.  I can reimport these .AVI files into my iphoto but when i fast user switch to her account , open iphoto, and try to import i get an error message saying that the file could not be imported due to an unrecognized format. I have spent ages trying to get this to work, checking file permissions etc, but i cannot get the movies across.
An additional frustration is that if i create a new folder in the shared area, or rexport the files again from my iphoto ( i was trying exporting in all the different kinds to see if that works), then the new files i exported do not show up in either my daughters finder or iphoto files. Why is this? Are they hidden? and if so why do these ones not show but the first ones i exported do show?
THanks for any help. I am rapidly going off the mac .... it is making me feel so dumb.

I can reimport these .AVI files into my iphoto but when i fast user switch to her account , open iphoto, and try to import i get an error message saying that the file could not be imported due to an unrecognized format. AVI is not a native mac video format, and it will depend on the codec used in the AVI, if Quicktime can play it. Do you have additional codecs installed in your account, that are not installed for all users and missing in your daughter's account? For example Perian, or Flip4Mac? Then install these too for your daughters account.

  • Importing data in scientific notation format

    Hi,
I've got some data files produced by some ancient laboratory software. In the files, numbers are formatted like this:
    +7.60609E-02
    +8.18901E-03
    etc.
When I import the data into Numbers, Numbers does not seem to recognize that the data points represent numbers, rather than strings (I can't create plots from the data, for example). If I edit the cells to prepend "=" to the entry, then Numbers evaluates the entry as if it were scientific notation (which is what I want), so that +7.60609E-02 becomes 0.760609. Is there a way to indicate to Numbers that the data I am importing is in scientific notation format, and should be treated as such? Because I'm not too excited about manually prepending "=" to everything.
    Thanks

If the file is a comma separated values file, you have two choices:
    1) Make a Numbers sheet that is formatted the way you want it, including formatting the cells in the column to be scientific.  Drag the file from Finder and drop it on cell A1 of the table or, if not A1, the top-left cell of where you wantthe data to begin in the table, like maybe cell B2. Or,
    2) Open the CSV file with Numbers. After import, select the column of numbers and format it as scientific.

  • My shuffle 2nd generation does not recognize some podcast in m4a format.

My shuffle does not recognize podcast form The Economist in m4a format. Nevertheless, it plays those fom T.E. in mp3 format, as well as many others podcast in m4a format w/o any problem.

If there is something not quite right about the iPod shuffle, click on the Restore button. This will restore the iPod to its original settings. If that does not work or is inaccessible, try the iPod Reset Utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
Both procedures will erase the iPod.

Yes. I tested resulted files with "MediaInfo".
"If so what are the results?"

  • Detecting the Beats Per Minute (bpm) of songs in mp3 and m4a formats.

    hi,
i am working on a mac on a mac application which needs the functionality of detecting the Beats Per Minute (bpm) of songs in mp3 and m4a formats.
For detecting bpm we are using the codes from  http://www.surina.net/soundtouch but it is giving wrong bpm values for m4a files even though they are converted
to mp3 or wav format using ffmpeg(Please note that bpm detection for mp3 files are working fine ). For detecting bpm we also tried the binary named SoundStretch which is also provided by soundtouch (http://www.surina.net/soundtouch).
Can any one explain what is going on?!. The m4a files even when converted to mp3 or wave are not working. Is any other open source libraries or classes for bpm detection are available for mac?
Any one please give some directions

I thought BPM was obvious. But then I downloaded a 15-day trial of Tangerine, which analyzed about 2/3's of my iTunes library, assigning BPM and beat intensity to each song. The light has not gone on for what these terms means now that I've listened to several songs with exactly the same BPM and BI. They don't sound similar, they sound entirely different. So I'm left still wondering what these terms mean, and how they can be useful in catagorizing music in my library.
As a self-described recording geek, perhaps you can help me grok these terms. What I really want to do is understand with my ears, not my brain.
    Thanks
    Greg

  • Why i can't import a clip of AVCHD format from iPhoto originaly from my Sony NEX-5N

why i can't import a clip of AVCHD format from iPhoto originaly from my Sony NEX-5N?

Hi there. For anyone searching, here are the results of my research and corresponding advice back to Sony...
Thanks, your comments looked correct but did not solve my problem. You may be interested to know after much testing and research, I was able to ascertain that some of the camera's AVCHD settings iMovie cannot see at all (only some, which made it even harder to figure out!). Plus, if you have recorded movie clips in more than one format to the memory card (MP4 or any one of the AVCHD's), iMovie cannot see any of the AVCHD's.
Bottom line - forgo the benefits of AVCHD on the Sony NEX-5N and just use MP4 until Apple makes it easier.

  • Exporting/Importing Contacts-keeping "note" formatting?

I export/import the same Contacts for mass editing in Access. No matter whether I use csv, tab or text, I lose the formatting of the notes when I import them back into Palm Desktop.
I'm beginning to believe that Palm destroys note formatting upon import. I understand that Excel itself destroys all formatting within a cell and, therefore, is a poor choice for exporting/importing if one has long formatted notes. But with Access, I wasn't using Excel during export nor import.
Has anyone ever exported/imported the same contact and maintained the note formatting? Is so, what did you use and how did you do it.
Post relates to: Treo 680 (Unlocked GSM)

Same thing happens to me and here is what I discovered: Either Hotsync or Palm Desktop 4.1.4 destroys formatting of memos (or contacts export). Here is how I found this: I created a memo from an application in my palm with tab delimitations between each fields. I check the memo in my palm and everything is ok. I Hotsync, got to my memo in Palm Desktop, Copy the memo, and try to paste in Excel. Bam! Not working. After trying multiple ways to do that, I copied the same memo in Word and forced to view the invisible characters. Bam! (again ;-)) No more tabs. All tabulations were replaced with 4 or 5 spaces. No wonder why I could not paste in Excel. The older version of Palm Desktop did not have this problem. To make sure that my memo was fine from the get go, I beamed (IrDA) it directly to my laptop (wich is equipped with IrDA) and copy-pasted the same memo in Excel. Voila! It worked.
So either it is the Hotsync or Palm Desktop that ruins formatting.
I tried this with my very old PalmPilot Personnal and my brand new Palm TX.

Thank you very much for the immediate response. I could find the MP4 files in an folder on the SD card and import directly from there. Problem solved.
