Import does not recognize old image files that have no extension

Just discovered that the import facility does not see (or accept) old Mac image files that have no extension -- even if these files have a Mac "kind" that is an image such as "Adobe Photoshop file".
You can manually add an extension to the file (and respond to an "are you sure?" dialog). Then the file will be seen and accepted.
This is extremely dangerous (and painful to manually correct) since you think you are seeing all images in the import box, but you are not.
In fact, I deleted huge image directories after having satisfactorally (I thought) imported them into Aperture many months ago. Most of the old extension-less files had been updated and did have extensions in later versions. However, I missed one important image and looked everywhere for it.
By a miracle I had a backup of my image directories on a Power Book that I am retiring and finally noticed that the missing image was there just before deleting that directory too! I then figured out why this image (and many others) had not been imported. So, now I am going through manually and adding extensions.
Does anyone know a better way -- to get Aperture to recognize extension-less images? If not, this needs to fixed in the next version as it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Well there's an idea...probably would need to go into Bridge <g> to do that most efficiently .. or Automator.
It turns out that I already had added extension to most (but not all) images in my main image directory and so they got into Aperture alright. I just have to go through all the images in the backup I just found (where many did not get extensions) to find the ones that Aperture missed. So far, there have been just a couple more...
The real problem is that Aperture should not be missing these, even if they are archaic. At the very least, Aperture's import should give a warning that there are files in a folder that it is not going to import AND is not even showing. Otherwise this is a serious gotcha!

You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my Canon Mark III 5D Camera.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my new Canon Mark III 5D Camera. How can I get my files open to view and edit? I am using LR3, Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3. Do I need to upgrade these programs or is there another way to get these programs to recognize my files?
When I try opening the raw images in Lightroom, the thumbnails say "Preview unavailable for this file" ... when I click "import" an error message pops up that says "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
When I try opening the raw images in Photoshop, an error message pops up saying "could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
When I try opening the raw images in Bridge, it just shows an icon with the file name and CR2.
Please help!!!

Unless I missed an announcement, today, LR6 isn't available, yet, right? Only Adobe employees and beta testers would know what LR6 does differently at this point and they're all sworn to secrecy.
LR5 is available as a standalone version.
PS-CS6 is available as a serial-number-licensed version.
PS-CC + LR5 are also available as a Photography Plan subscription for $10/month with a minimum OS versions of OSX 10.7 (and probably 10.8, soon) and Windows 7.
Bridge is part of PS, not a separate program.

Importer does not recognize already imported photos

I have a really annoying problem with Aperture 3.0.3. The importer does not recognize already imported photos and wants to import them again and again. This is true for photos from my iPhoneand also for photos from my Nikon. If I enable "Do not import duplicates" then some photos vanish from the importer, when I the iPhone view is open. In the Nikon view not even one photo is recognized as already imported.
Also very strange is that when I have the iPhone (iOS 4.1 installed) attached to the Mac, Aperture opens the importer automatically and shows all photos correctly - but strangely, both iMac CPUs are at 100% until I click either "Cancel" or "Start import" or I disconnect the iPhone.
I tried the following without success:
- Correct permissions on media library
- Repair media library
- Rebuild media library
Imports from my iPhone last very long and seem to hang most of the time. I have to kill Aperture to make it work again all the time.
To me, it looks like there is something really messed up at the base of this program.
I have about 20000 files in my library - face recognition is not turned off - most of the preferences are at their default, I think. Did not play around very much.
Does anybody know what to do? I don't want to lose all my Projects (sorted all pictures into their own projects). But I want to work with Aperture again. When its working, it's a great tool.

I've had the same problem. For some things, like videos and photos on my iPhone, I've found as many as 5 copies of the images despite keeping the 'do not import duplicates' checked.
I've also found a bug with the import function, where if I'm importing from folders on my hard drive, sometimes it finds no images at all (even if they don't exist in my library). Simply cancelling and going back into import and the miraculously appear (including images that have already been imported despite having 'do not import duplicates' checked.).
I've been going through my library deleting all the duplicates, and managed to free about 10GB of space.
Having moved from Lightroom the 'technical side' of Aperture seems very antiquated. For example, if I remove a duplicate video - then try clicking on that video in Aperture, it literally takes about 10-15 minutes of spinning disc before Aperture becomes responsive. It also often hangs up on the 'updating previews' when I quit.
Such a shame aperture is so bad. I really like the functionality - eg. having my photos automatically sync with my Apple TV, but it seems to be absolutely full of bugs.

When I watch tv shows in Front Row that I've bought off iTunes the audio gradually falls out of sync with the video. It does not happen with other files that I have converted into mp4s. Any ideas for fixing this? It's a huge bummer...

I too have the same problem. The audio drop out of sync in about 5 sec in not uncommon for the audio to be 30+ sec behind video. Apple needs to fix this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its a joke, my iphone is all messed up after the last update as well. at one time not to long ago apple products and software were top rated, not so much any more, more and more problems are showing up and apple is unwilling or unalbe to fix the many issues. Apple needs to fix the audio sync problem, it not the computer hardware or other software it ITUNES!!!!, there is no workaround other then hitting pause and hitting pause and hitting pause to temp fix the problem.

Thank you. It's all back to normal (took around 7 hours on the late 2009 iMac). Time Machine's become better now compared to the last time I used it to migrate everything automatically (Snow Leopard days). With Maverick's Time Machine, it's almost like a cloning (except for the password) tool now. But it's always great to name the account and maybe the hardisk the same names so can just replace a newly installed OS.

I try to import my d800 nef files and Lightroom does not recognize them and will not import. I looked on the site and it SAYS it supports them but nothing. I looked for a raw plugin but when I clicked the link it would not go anywhere. HELP! I don't want to shoot my wedding with this camera if LR can't support it and I have to return it to the camera store FAST if not.

But the question is about Lightroom. And Lightroom doesn't use any version of ACR. Lightroom 4 is somewhat compatible with ACR 6.7, and fully compatible with ACR 7.x. IPhoto does not recognize old backup of library

I have a iPhoto library backup disk (dvd) that dates back to 2006. Iphoto does not recognize the photos and they will not open. How do I get to see the photo's?

The only thing I can think of is that the Library is corrupted in some way. Unusual that the main computer can access it - though it rebuilds the thumbs each time, whiile the other two cannot. I suspect that the permissions warnings are bogus.
Neither of the other machines would be able to read that library without updating it, and in fact, once the 9.5.1 version updates it, the 9.4.3 version wouldn't be able to read it either.
But either way, each library should ask to upgrade it upon opening, that the don't suggests that the Library is damaged.
You need to decide what version you want to want to view this library with - as you can't view it with either of the other two once you upgrade it. Then from that machine rebuild the Library with iPhoto Library Manager.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Lumia 920 does not recognize transferred media fil...

I am able to transfer media files (mp3) to the phone with my Ubuntu 12.04 with no problem at all. However, the phone does not recognize files when I go to Nokia Music application. Software says that all the Music "folders" (Albums, Genres etc.) are empty. Am I missing something here? Seems like no one else has this problem.
I have tried putting the mp3 files in all possible folders ( music, documents etc) on phone, but no luck. I have also tried several different mp3 files. Can anyone help me with this?

This was never a problem for me with my fisrt 920. I have just taken delivery of a replacement phone after I managed to smash the glass on thge first one last week. I have tried transferring albums and songs (in mpeg-4 format from my pc's file explorer, using the USB connector. File Explorer indicates that the files have copied correctly into the Lumia's Music folder but when I try to run Nokia Music it tells me that nothing has been transferred. So I check back on the pc with USB connector and, sure enough, File Explorer tells me that the folders and files ARE there.
What's happening on the Lumia 920? (By the way the X-Box Music App also tells me that nothing exists on my Lumia music folder).
Absolutely no problem transferring photos by this route.

Added Hybrid SATA drive to ThinkCentre - does not recognize old IDE drive - Suggestions?

I added a 1TB Seagate Hybrid drive to my old ThinkCentre 808532U. I removed the jumper from the old IDE drive so it would be considered the secondary. I installed Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on the hybrid SATA. The old IDE had Windows XP. I want to use the old IDE drive as the secondary so I can access the data, pictures, etc. I do NOT want to boot XP. The system boots up fine with Windows 7. However, the system does not recognize the old IDE drive. I have gone into BIOS and changed the Parallel ATA to Secondary. The system still does not recognize the old IDE drive. I finally experimented enough that I found the solution! I tried putting all the IDE drives into Startup even though none showed any hardware assigned. I set Parallel ATA to Both. My machine would start up but not show the Logo screen or any screen for that matter. I put a Windows 7 install disk into the DVD ROM and got the Logo screen. I F1'd back into BIOS and suddenly two of the IDE entries in Startup were populated with the DVD drives. I set the order I wanted in Startup and saved the configuration. When Windows started it installed drivers for two devices. I looked into Computer and all the drives were listed!!!!!!!!!!! So now after several long nights I have my system configured properly for all the drives and all Windows 7 updates applied. I am waiting for delivery of a 256M graphics adapter and a gigabit ethernet adapter to see if I can increase performance. Time to sleep now..............

DNG Converter 6.4 does not recognize any RAW files

I have updated DNG Converter from 6.2 RC to 6.3 and 6.4. DNG Converter 6.2 RC from Adobe Labs recognizes all my RAW files (Canon PowerShot S50, PowerShot SX1IS, EOS 400D). The official releases of 6.3 and 6.4 do not recognize any RAW files of these cameras.
I select a directory, where the raw files are located, but DNG Converter tells me that no files where selected. With 6.2 RC, I select the directory and everything just works fine.
What's wrong with this picture?

Simulate Acquisition does not include new image file created after first call

For example, I have 5 images in a folder.
I call Simulate Acquisition.
It cycles through all 5 images.
Now If I include 1 more image it does not include this image in the "cycle". I need to reload this step by clicking Main\path\browse button and select any image in the folder and then it cycles through all 6 images.
Is there anyway to automatically include new images added to the folder after the step has been created?

Here's a sample inspection and VI to illustrate how you could do this. I used an image variable and passed this into the Run LV step so the VI could read the file and update the image variable and then I used the Select Image step to get the image variable into the VBAI script so you can process it. I also added a delete option in the VI so you can delete the previous image when you read the next available image. Make sure to go to the Setup State and initialize the path variable to where your image files will live (to access the Setup State, go to View>>View Complete Inspection and select on the Setup option on the left hand side. I initialized it to c:\Image Folder

You can also try to update your version if it isn't version 8.5
There is also a possibility to use DNG converter to load any raw files from any cameras but see if this answers your question.

Autorun / import does not recognize .NEF files...

I've tried to get LR to launch when inserting a memory card but cannot get it to do so when the memory card only has .nef files on it.
LR will launch with .jpg files on the card.
I have gone into the registry and added the *.nef and DCIM\*\*.nef as file types into the PictureContentSniffer key alongside .jpg and other image file types - to no avail.
Anybody got any suggestions at all?

First - THANK YOU John for making a suggestion. It was of course one of the more obvious things to try early. Alas no joy.
LR relies on the autoplay capabilities of window - which internally is build around a set of different media event handlers - in turn triggered by "sniffers" which look for audio, picture or video content on inserted media. The sniffers / event triggers to work with standard picture file types. And there is, as I noted, a way to edit the sniffer file masks. But for some reason my system does not seem to pay attention to these edited masks.
Something deeper is awry.
Open to any further suggestions. (excepting "clean Windows reinstall LOL)
