Import DPX Files Workflow?

One of the main reasons I upgraded from PPro CS4 to CS5 was to handle DPX files. I used FCP 7 together with Glue Tools Cineon/DPX add on to import large DPX files for editing. However very little info is available in the various Adobe PPro CS5 help sources. As I result I am stumbling around trying to crack the code on how to bring in 1080p 24 f DPX files.
I work with very large 1080p DPX file sets. Eack folder holds 15,000 frames. The frame images are 1920 by 1080 pixels. The DPX files are stored on a very large RAID set with read and write rates of 1200 MB/sec. More than fast enough for any regular uncompressed file. But DPX files take many minutes to import and then I can not play the 15,000 frame clip in the source monitor, nor cam I add the clip to a sequence. I can add one frame at a time to the sequence but that defeats the whole purpose.
Does anyone have any workflow suggestions for importing large DPX files? Like the right presets to use etc. Do I need to process the DPX files in After Effects or some other Production Preimere CS5 utility?

Steve - Thanks for the tip! I was trying to Import my DPX files from the Media Browser. The Import function there does NOT have the numbered still check box. I had to do the Import from the Project window. That has the numbered stills check box and other options. It is very quick and acts more like Final Cut Pro 7 with the Glue Tools Cineon/DPX plugin does. - Bill

Go to Edit>Preferences>Media...and set the Indeterminate Media Timebase to the proper frame rate for the media, then Import the files as an Image Sequence.

Blender 10 bit DPX Files not importing into AE CC

Hi all! Back in After Effects CS6 I was able to import DPX files generated from Blender. They were 10bit RGB files like this one:

I recently upgraded to AE CC (no plugins installed) and I am getting After Effects error: The file header version is invalid. ( 0 :: 8 )
Please note the only change has been upgrading to CC. These files were generated in Blender 2.68 and worked fine in CS6, but not in CC.
On Mac OSX 10.9.5 with a GTX 680 and 20 GB of RAM. Any help would be appreciated

I looked at this file with DPX Plus in Photoshop and found that the header version is listed as "v2.0" instead of the standard "V2.0", note the uppercase. It's true, earlier versions of AE weren't bothered by this. I'll file a bug.
In the meantime, you could use DPX Plus for AE to read it, because it'll ignore the version in the header.

DPX Files, Exporting DPX

I am using the trial version of Premiere Pro CC, and I'd like to put in a suggestion for a new feature for the program. I am importing DPX files (Cineon type) that were scanned on a film scanner for movie film, and Premiere Pro does not currently allow custom frame rates for importing. It only wants to do set rates and not a specified number of your choice. I have Super 8 which needs an 18 fps rate, and with Premiere Pro- you can only set it to 15 or 24. My only solution is to use After Effects, import in that, and the save the file to import back into Premiere. This seems like such a run around and forces me to use another programme just to do one thing with it. Premiere Pro should allow this option, as it has that feature in another of its programs.
Also since 4K video is becoming more popular, Premiere Pro should allow to save to a UHD file in a compressed format like ProRes4444 or MPEG 4 in 4K. 4K Blu rays will be available by the end of this year, so they should incorporate this option into the next software fix. My DPX files were scanned at 5K specifically to downrez to 4K video, and Premiere does not have an option for me to do that in a compressed video format. So please make this update available soon. For now- I cannot use Premiere Pro as is to finish my work, because it does not give me an output option I need.

Look in the "Manual" thingy, under "Configuring the Setup Room". In "Project Settings", there is a dialogue "Render File Type" and you will be able to choose dpx/cineon and a scaling range -- probably video for what you're doing. But take your pick:
• Video (64 Black - 940 White : Linear): The minimum and maximum values of 0 and 100
percent in Color’s scopes correspond to the digital values of 64 and 940 in rendered
DPX files. Super-white values above 100, if present in Color, are preserved using this
format.
• Linear (0 Black - 1023 White): The minimum and maximum values of 0 and 100 percent
in Color’s scopes correspond to the digital values of 0 and 1023 in rendered DPX files.
Super-white values, if present in Color, are clipped using this format when rendering

4K Rendering, DPX Files, and Brightness Control

First off- when will Premiere Pro CC allow for 4K rendering? This is a new standard and currently the program won't support exporting to 4K compressed files. The reason I want this is because I use 4K and want to keep it in its native format, and also because I want to save it to a 4K Blu Ray when 4K Blu Rays will be announced late this year.
Also when will Premiere Pro allow for odd frame rates when importing DPX files? Currently it only adds a few options for frame rates, so I have to use After Effects to set my frame rate to 18fps, and then load that into Premiere Pro. It seems stupid to have to use one program to set for one thing, and then use Premiere Pro to do the work needed.
Also I have some files that need brightness correction. Without using Auto settings, how can I manually adjust the brightness of the video to where I want it set? I don't see any option in Premiere to correct for brightness, without using an auto setting. I tried auto contrast and some of my video was still too dark. And I really don't want to have to use another program just to correct for this, as this should be an option in Premiere for the price you pay to use the program.

OK, let's address the current issues first.

What is the exact frame size you want to export?
The most commonly used export format nowadays seems to be H.264. When 4K Blu-Ray To export to H.264 I use the following settings, although actually not quite 4K - it was the size I was asked for with this project example. It was a talking head so I was able to get away with a reasonable bitrate. You can change it around to suite your needs.
The next topic seems to be the Brightness and Contrast effect. I found it on the Effects tab in the Video Effects/Color Correction section.
As for importing your image sequence, feel free to import it at 24fps, then interpret it the way you want it. I suggest that you import at 24, then create the sequence from the imported clip.
Then right click on the video clip in the Project Panel and interpret it to 18fps. Then drop the 18fps on to the 24fps sequence. It will play at 24fps by duplicating some of the frames. There is no way to really get around that other than play it back at 18fps. Not a great option.
Now, I highly suggest that if you are going to use Premiere Pro, that you take some lessons. The best are from Lynda.com but there are free ones for CS6 that still apply to CC at CreativeCOW

You can't. LR is only compatible with (IIRC), JPEG, TIFF, all the RAW formats that ACR supports, and PSDs saved with maximum compatibility.

DPX files names don't not appear & can't import in setup

I'm using apple color ver1.5.3 and I've tried to import some DPX files the same method i've used in Color 1.0.......by searching them in the setup tab and drag them to the time line......
however....i can't import any DPX files in the 1.5.3 ver and all DPX files appear as .######.dpx...the only option i have is to fix the headers...but this won't solve my problem at all.....plz help me....

Subtitle workflow. Is it possible to import srt files into premiere and then export to Encore?

Hi, I'm editing a series of short documentaries that wil be published in DVD with subtitles, and I'm wondering if there's any way to import srt files into Premiere and then export the project to Encore.

You can easily (and better, IMHO) do what you want in Adobe Prelude. It's part of the CC subscription, and may have been included with CS6.
Open the Ingest panel, navigate to the external drive where you have your source clips, make the thumbnails in the Ingest panel comfortably large, click a video clip to enable scrubbing, and use the J-K-L keys to navigate playback through the clips. Put a check mark on the clips you want and be sure to select and set up the Transfer option on the right side of the panel before ingesting. Don't select the Transcode option.

Color to FCP contrast shift (DPX files only...)

I have a Color sequence which has a mix of raw .R3D files from the RED, and DPX files from VFX work... When I grade, and then send the sequence to FCP, the files which started out as .r3d files, have correct color contrast; however, the clips that are DPX files, seem to have their black levels raised... I am rendering to proRes 4444 quicktime files for everything, and this color-shift is consistent for every clip that originated as DPX files.
In Color the waveforms and scopes of the DPX sequences, all read correctly (blacks are at 0, and whites at 100), but when brought into FCP, the contrast seems off, and this is confirmed by the scopes in FCP (black levels are consistently raised to around 10 or so...).
Trying to sort it out, and will post any solutions I can come up with, but any thoughts in the mean time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for your response JP, however I am not quite sure that it is quite what I need (unless I am misunderstanding you...). I can't adjust the scaling on export, because I am not rendering to DPX, but rather to ProRes 444 (I could adjust each clip on import, but that would render the LUT and current corrections pretty much useless....). Let me try to explain a bit further...
We are importing the DPX sequences (95-685 Log) as Linear (0-1023), and then using an LUT to correct for the LOG space during CC. For the time being we are rendering with the LUT in place because we are outputting to video (the film-out will come later....). The workflow for the RED footage is pretty much the same (gamma settings in the RED tab are set to PDLog685, and the same LUT is used for CC)... Upon render (to ProRes 444), the RED footage renders correctly, with blacks at 0, however the DPX footage acquires some sort of contrast shift which puts the blacks at around 5-10 IRE...
For the time being we can apply a quick 3wayCC back in FCP and adjust the black levels for the affected clips back to where they should be, but it would be really nice to know/understand exactly where the problem is occurring...

Importing text file (with file names) into Automator.. is it possible?

I have been working with Windows Batch files for my line of work. I have a couple of file names in a text file (a column), which I want to copy from one folder of one hdd to another folder on a different hdd. I have been trying to do this kind of work with a Mac. I already know how you copy and rename files in automator (which isn't difficult, of course) but you have to 'select' the files in the finder first (with get specified items).
But the only way i see that you can specify items is by selecting them... is there a way to import a text file with all the file names instead of selecting all the file names manually?
or is there an AppleScript alternative which I can use to import the text file (or just copy into applescript) and run before the query's of copying and renaming the files? I am kind of new to Apple programming.
The text file looks like this:
image1.jpg
image2.jpg
etc..
so there has to be a command to: 'goto' a specific folder as well.

You can import text files, but if they are just names you will need an additional action to add the source folder path. A *Run AppleScript* action can be used, for example:

Cannot import PDF files into iPhoto 4.0.3

Is it possible to import PDF files into iPhoto 4.0.3? I can't drag and drop them into iphoto folders without the "Unreadable Files" error. I have tried importing them through the iPhoto menu and still get the same results. I have tried importing the PDF files from several places such as my desktop because I wondered if the location of the original made a difference, but that doesn't seem to help. I didn't find anything when I searched for this problem here in the forum so I wondered if anyone else is having the same problems.
Any help would be appreciated.

No because I had iPhoto 4 open and tried to run the Save PDF to iPhoto on a book in that library. I think it's just the different data structure, etc.. It's just not compatible with Automator or at least that particular workflow. I tried printing to PDF from V4 and then do the Save to iPhoto from Preview with V4 open and I still get the error message. So iPhoto 4 is just not compatible with that workflow.
A workaround is to create a PDF file of the whole book and then manually save each page as a jpg file and import those. That's what I did for my first book. You could do a screen shot of each page in the preview mode and use those but the resolution will be limited to screen resolution, 72dip. You will get resolutions on the order of 150-200 dpi thru the Save As route in Preview or the Save to iPhoto automator method.
I'm sure you could create an Automator workflow that would take the PDF file and save each page as a jpg file and name it sequentially. I'll have to take a closer look at Automator soon.

Can not import MXF files into Final Cut Pro

I am full of anger and frustration!!! I purchased final cut pro only to find out that it WILL NOT import MXF files. How insane is that? ADOBE - NO PROBLEM. Then I had to go back to YOUR STORE and buy two different file converter applications before I found one that worked. Now FINAL CUT PRO will only import the audio segment of converted files after converting to PRORES in PAVTUBE. Are you BUCKING kidding me? This work flow BLOWS. Why the FELL does this have to be sooooo hard! I am gone to creative cow and other forums to try to find out why I am sooo stupid that I can't get this simple process sorted out. YOU BUCKING MONEY MACHINE! How many more aps will I have to buy before I can edit CANON XF100 files in Final Cut Pro. BUCK politics! You should make your software with plugins that would allow you to edit without this kind of added step. JUST LIKE ADOBE. I want refunds for my final cut pro purchase. This is BUCKING rediculous. What a waste of time!

There is definite upside to dragging one's feet on upgrades until necessary and this is a prime example. On a desktop running 10.6, and the XF Utility, FCP 7 L&T works reliably. And like you, that's my workflow for FCPX projects. Running 10,7 on a laptop, the EOS plug-in works well for FCPX imports – no workarounds needed. When I finally get around to updating, I will partition the HD, with one SL partition and the other partition with a later OS. Of course this strategy will work only as long as my hardware holds up.

How to import DivX files??? File format not supported... Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.

I am with you, as I get handed all sorts of "stuff." I have a normal workflow, with about anything but DV-AVI (I only do SD for now), and that is do a batch conversion with DigitalMedia Converter. I have also found that some other NLE's are more lenient, regarding odd CODEC's. I have used PrElements, CyberLink PowerDirector (does DivX pretty well, with the CODEC installed) and Magix MovieProducer Pro.
Still, PrPro is my NLE of choice by a great stretch, and I just use the others as tools to get the media in the proper form. I have been amazed at the spectrum of formats/CODEC's that people come up with, but also by how well (when you factor out those heavily compressed deliver-only format/CODEC's and the quality loss) I can convert, and then edit some of this stuff.
It's just the way that it goes. It's like the client, who comes in with a DVD, created in some DVR unit, and wants it edited and shipped off on another DVD. Quality loss with 2x MPEG-2 Transcodes, and the first VOB is going to also have cr*p Menus and navigation, that I have to rip around. Still, the job gets done.
With the Moyea FLV Importer for Premiere, I can even edit that junk, when they pull something off of YouTube (only if the © issues can be handled).
Good luck, and sorry for the bad news. PrPro is very sensitive to the CODEC's that it will edit with. Others, well not so much, but who would want to edit with them?

Problems importing .mov file

I am all of a sudden having problems importing .mov files from my camera in iPhoto '08. Can't get them to import in Image Capture either...On the import preview screen, all that comes up are empty "boxes". If I highlight one of the boxes, it shows that it is .mov file, the size of the file, etc. but if i try to do the import, iPhoto just locks up.

iPhoto does not like very large movie files for importing directly from the camera. If you get it on the desktop you should be able to import it. I've imported 200MB movies with no problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. What is the best way to import Freehand files to InDesign?

Has anyone developed a fast workflow to convert Freehand files intact to InDesign CS3?
Illustrator CS3 will import Freehand files directly, but from there I cant bring editable and formatted text into ID CS3. Formatted text is converted to paths via the clipboard. This is incredibly frustrating.
Till recently I used "Copy Special" within Freehand MX which allowed a reasonably useful way to copy graphics and fully-editable and formatted text across to ID. This is too slow for multiple FH pages however.
Adobe have provided a useful tool to open Freehand files via Illustrator but why on earth didnt they see that many Freehand files are set up as page layouts and are better placed into InDesign?
Any constructive ideas or successful workarounds most appreciated. Thanks. JETNZ

Freehand was never "just" an illustration program. And for many people, it was the "only" page layout program available.
b Freehand had a huge following in Israel
where it was the first multi-page program that allowed people to set type in Hebrew (right to left). For small documents (I always put a limit of 20 pages), Freehand was a terrific product.
b Freehand has a huge market share in South Africa.
During the years of apartheid, many American companies, including Adobe, honored the boycott of doing business in South Africa. Macromedia chose not to honor the boycott. Therefore Freehand became the only program available. I don't justify the decision to do business in SA, but it explains why people used Freehand.
Apart from market share, there were also many legitimate reasons to use Freehand as a page layout program:
b Freehand had a "wrapping" tab feature
that made it unnecessary to put tabbed text into separate boxes as Quark and PM required. This wrapping tab is still unique to Freehand and would be a bonus in many word processing and layout programs.
b Freehand has different sized pages
in the same document. How many times have I heard people ask for such a feature here? Yet Freehand has it where Quark, PM, and ID don't.
b Freehand has some of the most advance selection tools
in the business. I'm thinking of the ability to select items within a range of stroke weights as well as other attributes. Again neither Quark, PM, or ID have such a feature. And even Illustrator, which has a "Magic Wand" selection tool can match Freehand's selection dialog box.
There are other features, but I don't need to go into them.
However, I do agree that Macromedia did not give Freehand the time and attention it needed to do well in today's market.
The code is ancient.
The output to PDF directly from Freehand is stuck back on Acrobat 5.
Some of the transparency features are not what we consider true transparency.
And so on.
But to just lump anyone who uses Freehand into a category of not professional is wrong.
