Hi,
Have you checked DriverCatalog.log records details about device drivers that have been imported into the driver catalog? There might be some useful information.

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Importing Songs from iPod after hard drive failed

My hard drive failed. Fortunately all of my songs were backed up on my iPod. Got a new computer and can't figure out how to get the songs from my iPod back to my computer. Some songs were purchased from iTunes, some from CDs. I tried the import function and all it does is bring the titles into my library but cannot find them when I try to play them on my computer. The songs are still on my iPod.
iPod 40g and Nano   Windows XP

The transfer of music is designed to be one way by default - from iTunes to iPod, however there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    PodPlus Windows Only
Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these and pick one you are happy with, they are generally quite straightforward.
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode in which case you can ignore the rest of this post. In manual mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased. However if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • My hard drive failed. I was able to restore my files from an external hard drive. I have my bookmarks saved but am not able to import them into Firefox as the only option is to import them from another browser. Any suggestions?

    -My hard drive failed.
-I was able to restore my files from an external hard drive.
-My bookmarks are saved to a folder on my new hard drive.
-I am not able to import them from this folder on my hard drive into Firefox.
    - the only option Firefox offers for importing bookmarks is to import them from another browser...is there another way?

In Firefox the bookmarks are saved in a database file called places.sqlite in the profile folder. If you have got this file from the external hard drive you can restore the bookmarks by copying this file to your current profile folder. For details of the location of the profile folder see either https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles or http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

  • I had all my files, including bookmarks, backed up to my NAS when my hard drive failed. How do I import these bookmarks to Firefox on my new notebook? Is there a single HTML file I should be looking for on my NAS?

I had all my files, including bookmarks, backed up to my NAS when my hard drive failed. How do I import these bookmarks to Firefox on my new notebook? I can easily find the folder "Favorites" on my NAS, but can't get Firefox to "see" this folder, or my bookmarks.

If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.
    See:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
You may want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.

  • Hard Drive Failed, New one Installed, Problems of course

Hellooo Everyone This is sort of a last ditch effort to see if I can fix this myself or if I am going to have to shell out 500 dollars to get my laptop back in working order. So I have a HP dv6-6140 laptop. A few weeks ago the hard drive failed and I purchased and installed a new one, ran windows 7 and have it on my laptop. When I try to hook up an ethernet cable to download and install the drivers for the laptop the ethernet cable is not recognized it says no internet connection blah blah blah. Ok so I downloaded the drivers to a flash drive and installed some of them onto my laptop, no changes.  So I was thinking of purchasing the recovery discs which im assuming include the drivers for the notebook for 35 dollars which is paltry in comparison to what I would pay if I took it to a computer repair shop, but how do I know that would work? I dont. I am looking for ideas or anything that I may be missing. I am not computer illiterate but I am not an expert. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hi, Kelly:
On your model normally it is very important to install the chipset driver first and reboot before attempting to install the ethernet (wired network) driver.
The chipset drivers install some motherboard driver which I think enables the communication to the ethernet adapter.
The problem is, HP does not include the necessary chipset drivers for your model (which I assume is a HP Pavilion dv6-6140us Entertainment Notebook PC).
So...Download and install the AMD Chipset Drivers and reboot.  You want the first driver listed on the webpage.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Then see if the ethernet adapter works again or reinstall the ethernet driver after you reboot the PC.
The parts list indicates your model comes with a Broadcom wireless/bluetooth card.
Here are the links to the drivers you need for that...

  • Hard drive failed in computer

My hard drive failed in my computer a few months ago. How can I sync my ipod touch to my new hard drive without erasing everything on my ipod first?  I really dont want to have to buy all the songs again or import them from my cd's.

  • IMovie -Problem restoring events after external hard drive failed.

iMovie 09 – The external hard drive failed where I stored my 2012 events.  I do not have a backup copy of these events. I bought a new external drive and named it exactly the same as the old drive. Then I uploaded archived original video clips to it recreating the events.  I used the exact same event names.  However when I view the projects I made from the original events, I get “this clip’s media file is not currently available”. The file path I created should be the same as the old, so why does the project not recognize the recreated events?  Any suggestions what I could try?
If I were able to retrieve and copy the old events from the failed drive to the new drive, would that work?
Has anyone successfully dealt with this problem?

That's a very interesting scenario that you've described. I've been concerned about a potential situation arising where I may need to restore Events from a backup drive. However, your situation is somewhat different in that you've had to re-import the Events to a new drive from an archive.
My main video drive is a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo comprising two 500GB drives set up as a RAID 0. So, effectively it appears as one drive totalling 1TB, with data being written to both drives simultaneously (but not mirrored). However, if one drive fails, the other becomes ineffective as it contains only partial data about imported clips (the remaining data being on the failed drive).
I backup the Maxtor to a portable 1TB drive by cloning it using SuperDuper. My thinking has been that, if the Maxtor fails then a simple rename of the backup drive to the same name as the Maxtor is all that will be required for iMovie to retain the linkages between Events and Projects. I hope this is the case!
I hope you get a solution to your predicament - sorry I can't offer any useful advice!

  • New iMac 750 GB Hard Drive Fail Smart Drive Test - Glitch or Problem

    Greetings!
I have a new 24" imac with 750 GB hard drive which has had problems out of the box (system crashing several times a day/unable to re-start/application crashes/general sluggishness).
Five re-installs of Leopard (upgrade/clean install/install and erase)in five weeks when I finally used the latest version of Drive Genius and TechTool Pro (4.6.1). Both claimed hard drive problems. Specifically, TechTool Pro reported smart drive failure (see report below, please).
This seemed to confirm my suspicions that something was flawed with my iMac from the start.
I have returned the computer for a new hard drive.
The Apple-approved repair shop says they've installed a new 750 GB had drive sent by Apple and when they run TechTool Pro, they get the same smart drive failure report. The techie claims this is either a glitch with TechTool Pro, or with the hard drive, but that I have nothing to worry about.
    What's your opinion?
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Greetings, all!
This has been my first posting, despite having owned 5 Macs over twelve years - which goes to show you how reliable they are, most of the time.
I am very impressed with the thoughtful responses, and I really, really appreciate you taking the time to respond.
Here's an update since my last posting. I picked up my repaired(?) iMac from the Apple-approved repair shop. The technician's report said (referring to the original hard drive Seagate ST3750640AS Q) "The drive has passed and boots into the OS without issue. Confirmed the smart status of the hard drive shows failed, but this is for an unknown attribute. This may not really indicate the drive is failing, but could be a possibility. Since all of the other tests have passed, I feel it is best to replace the drive under warranty for the customer.
About the new hard drive, the technician wrote: I have run a third-party smart utility on the (new, replaced) hard drive again and I have found that it is failing with the same error. The Apple test shows the smart status as OK.
I have researched this error and I have found that this attribute appears to be for temperature. Since both drives showed the exact same error, this attribute can be safely ignored for smart status. I was not able to replicate any issues with this machine other than the smart status failure so I do not think there is any other hardware failing in this machine.
If the customer continues to have issues, I would recommend reinstalling the OS one more time. If the issue still persists after this, then the customer should bring in the computer when issues are still happening so we can try to determine the cause of the problem better.
At first, my iMac was performing much better, but as I began to migrate data from back-up, I was not able to connect/re-establish my iphoto library, or re-establish my Apple mail accounts( both of which I have done countless times in the past without hassle).
I decided to run Apple's Disk utility which reports it cannot repair the new drive.
Just prior to my original posting, I had sent a copy of my posting to Micromat (TechTool Pro) asking for their opinion/advice.
Their response was: The SMART routines are built into the hard drive by the drive manufacturer. They are proprietary and different for each drive manufacturer. TechTool Pro just reads the status of the built-in SMART parameters and reports their status. Basically, a threshold exceeded indicates that the drive has exceeded what the manufacturer thinks are proper operating parameters for it and it may be getting close to failing. For an interpretation of the seriousness of a specific attribute failure you would need to contact the drive manufacturer. A failure is a warning to be sure to keep good backups and consider replacing the drive. If you get a SMART failure on a drive that is under warranty, the drive manufacturer will typically replace the drive.
Following are two links that might be of interest:
    http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/docs/glossary.html
    http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/docs/smart-attribute-meaning.html
I also took your (Looby) advice and called Seagate. (I also visited their web site, which recommends replacement of their hard drive under these circumstances!)
Within a couple of minutes, the tech person agreed that this is a serious concern and I should replace the drive.
Regarding Wiil's post, Apple's Disk utility says: smart status verified.
The SmartReporter utility reports the smart status is OK.
The SmartUtility application says:smart status failed. ID: #190 Unknown attribute.
For all other posters, this was not a New Egg purchase, which was not relevant to my post. Thank you just the same.
I've left a message for the Apple-approved store and will ask for another drive, and that, if possible, it be tested before I bring my iMac in to reduce the inconvenience.
I'm also wondering if I should switch to a 500 GB hard drive, although that would defeat the purpose of buying the larger drive for all the video I work with ( I have another 2 Terabytes storage with external drives).
Any further comments welcome - and thank you all again for taking the time!

  • Unable to ingest file- "reason:import xmp failed!"

I have been trying to ingest an 8mm video file into prelude and get the error message "reason:import xmp failed!". I have ingested many other 8 mm files with no problems. I tried to import it in to premiere pro and it said file type not recognized. It opens fine in quicktime. It was initially captured into final cut pro as a simple DV-NTSC.
    Any thoughts from anyone?
    Thanks very much.
    Ken

Hi Wes - The only place I can upload it, is to "yousendit" which has a 2 gb limit. Unfortunately all of the files are from video tapes and are 5-18 GB. I tried re-recapturing a short segment of one of the files but  prelude ingested it just fine.
The back-story on this is that I have captured over 50, 8mm tapes using finalcut 5 on my G5 over the last 9 years.  They were captured as DV-ntsc. I just purchased an iMac and production premium, and plugged the external drives with the files on them into  the iMac. All but 6 files are fine with the remaining 6 having this problem.  I can easily see which files are a problem in the ingest dialog box when there is no thumbnail but only a generic quicktime icon. They will all open in quicktime.
I looked at the info box and they all look the same. Do you have any ideas about what I could check? Are there some hidden settings accesible with and option or command + key? It seems like there is something simple happening.
Do you have a suggestion of where I coud upload a file?
Thanks very much for your help.

  • Importing .mbox failing

I am sure I made a mistake somewhere along the way, but I'll describe my issue and ask for help:
I back up my mailboxes from an IMAP server, saving them to my mac every month or so. I did this for three months and then my hard drive failed, losing a LOT of email in the process. So this time I decided to make extra copies of the mailbox. So: I just dragged the mailbox from the side-bar to the desktop and now I have a folder named "October, 2007 IN.mbox" with 16.7 MB in it. In the folder is an "info.plist" file and another folder marked "messages" inside which there are the .emlx files.
    OK?
So then I try to use Mail's "Import Mailboxes..." and after selecting the folder mentioned above, I get this message: "No valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found."
I did upgrade one computer from 10.4 to 10.5, but that shouldn't make a difference, should it?
Is there any way to import this mailbox now that it is in the wild?
    Thanks.

Question answered: it was a matter of being caught between upgrades or something. I suspect 10.4 will not import a mailbox created in 10.5. In any case, importing works in 10.5.

  • Hard drive failed - need to get music off my iPod

    Greetings:
I have an iPod Video, 80 gigabyte.
A while back, I had a hard drive fail which was storing all my music to sync to the iPod. Now, I have the music on the iPod, but need to get it back into iTunes, without iTunes deleting the music upon sync.
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • "reason: import xmp failed"

Is anyone receiving the error message "reason: import xmp failed" when ingesting audio (.wav) files into Prelude CS6? Is there a fix?

I try to ingest  files from an external hard drive thats connected via USB to my laptop. The original files were recorded with a Panasonic camera on P2 cards. I just copied them from the cards to my hard drive. From around 400 files in those folders I try to ingest around 350 fail in Pl. I think all of my audio, video and clip files (mxf and xml files) fail to ingest proberly.
The funny thing is they work fine in Pr!
    What should I do differently?
Here is one that fails to ingest right in Pl but does can be played perfectly fine in Pr:
    http://dfiles.eu/files/l5fey5wc9
I'm afraid I cannot download the file you offered, when I click the download button nothing happens.
However I think I can reproduce what you describe if I select to ingest a FOLDER that represents a P2 card. The solution is to open the folder so that the Ingest Dialog views the contained clips as "Panasonic P2". Then select the clips and proceed to ingest.

  • MBP 17 Hard Drive failed in a strange manner

I had my MBP ( late 2010 Snow Leopard ) in sleep mode over night.   Opened the lid in the morning and it started getting out of sleep as usual but it took a very long time.  After about 20 minutes or so the wheel still spinning on gray screen.  I did a forced shut down by holding the power button.  Waited several minutes and pushed the power button again. Very slow again. After about 30 minutes it went to the login screen but it wouldn't show my keyboard entries for the password. After several minutes it showed the first couple of characters as entered but locked in the middle and the spinning wheel kept running again.  I did a force shut down again and this time let it stay for an hour.  Then when I started it again a rattling noise came from the hard drive and stayed on gray screen.
I had a backup of some important data on an external drive that was last connected to the MBP 4-5 days earlier, a 500GB Hitachi G-drive Mini.  As soon as I connect it via USB to my 6-month old Mac Pro, the G-drive starts making a clicking and rattling noise too similar to that of the internal MBP hard drive.  It's strange that both drives failed almost simultaneously in the same manner.  This happened a couple of days ago, and ever since I have opened both drives in a clean environment and moved the heads back to the park position, then tested them again but the drives are still not readable.  Any suggestion as to what I should do next in trying to recover my data is very much appreciated.

IMHO, I think this should be in a hardware forum such as Macbook Pro. Might get a more hardware oriented helper's attention there. It is clearly not a Snow Leopard issue.
You said in your OP that you had tried USB to your Mac Pro with same clicking sound (but did not indicate whether the drive was recognized). Also that you had opened both drives and that BOTH  drives were unreadable - the G drive via USB to 6 month old Mac Pro(implied).
Since your surgery on the MBP HD, does it still behave 'sluggishly' ? Or does it fail to Startup?
If sluggish, you might try 'Target Disk mode' = OS X Mountain Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode has generic OSX instruction on connect and transfer of data.
    Data recovery...
MBP may be able to utilize a data recovery app from a bootable CD - would require a working external connected though.
G Drive will require professional service in any case and likewise the MBP drive if DIY effort fails.
I find many services and Yelp hits by Google " data recovery yourCity " - probably $150 and up per drive.
