Import DVD footage?  Encore/Premiere/AfterEffects?

Hi.  I have a project to remap the sound for DVD video footage.  How can I import this footage into a QuickTime format or any other format that one of my Creative Suite 4 or 5 products will recognize?  Once I import the footage I can refoley/remap the sound by changing its soundtrack using either the Audio Software that I have exclusively or along timecode and match the audio from the Audio Software in a video suite such as Premiere or preferably After Effects (with which I'm more familiar).  Is this possible?  Do I need a DVD ripping software instead?  What are this forum's members' suggestions?
Any help is appreciated.
Sincerely,
-markerline

  • Import DVD footage in Premiere CC

    Hi there,
I want to import footage from a DVD (self burnt). Can I do this directly with
Premiere CC or do I need a programm like Handbrake (I'm a Windows user)?
    Thanks for helping me out.
    Cheers

@ Bill Hunt: Thanks for your help.
As I have seen in your post. I downloaded the DVD Rip programm in one of the links:
...so I followed these steps (ecxept that I used AVI DV PAL instead NTSC). But why not encode to MPEG-2?
I thought encoding to MPEG-2 is the clue? The AVI file worked in PrePro but VLC Player for instance had
proplems to playback that file. is that normal?
    Thanks.
    Best regards

  • How Do you import C100 footage into Premiere Pro CC

I just tried importing  Canon C100 footage into Premiere Pro CC, but get no sound. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and I pray I don't have to convert this footage before bringing it in. Is there a workflow anyone can recommend? Do I have to convert the footage first? Thanks, Lucian

    Lucian,
PrPro should work natively with the Canon C100 footage ... it works with almost everything out there. And with the C100 shooting MP-4, AVCHD, & H.264, those are all handled easily by PrPro.
My question ... I would surmise (from what little info you include) you are shooting AVCHD? The reason I say this is that format splits audio & video into different files ... so it's a bit trickier to "import" than others that have the a & v in one file. Make sure you copied the whole top-leveL FOLDER and all sub-folders (not just the footage or contents of a folder) from the cam/card into the computer for AVCHD ... and then when you import into a project via the media browser your audio & video should be all connected by PrPro.
There have been numerous threads here where AVCHD users have "lost" their audio, only to find they'd simply left it behind by NOT copying all the folders & subfolders their camera had created.

  • Importing DVD to Adobe Premiere Element 12

I have just recently purchased Adobe Premiere Element 12 and Photoshop pack. I am completely at a loss how to import a dvd (movies, anime). I downloaded a decrypter and then uploaded the disc onto a USB drive. After loading up the file into Adobe the whole movie was a huge mess, everything was choppy. Pinnacle studio came with a device that linked up the movie maker to the dvd player to capture clips. Is there something that I need to buy for Adobe Premiere? Do I need to do anything with Photoshop? Appreciate any answers

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 running on? If you have not updated 12 to 12.1 Update using an opened project's Help Menu/Update, please do so.
To your immediate...if you are using Premiere Elements, you do not need to do any conversions. I repeat that, you do not.
You simply insert your DVD disc with its DVD-VIDEO format in the burner tray and use Premiere Elements 12/12.1's Add Media/DVD camera or computer drive/Video Importer/ to get the video files from the disc into the Premiere Elements project. The file(s) that you seek are in the VIDEO_TS Folder on the disc and typically have the name starting with VTS_01_1.VOB. Depending on how much you have on the DVD disc, you might have additional files in the series
VTS_01_2.VOB and so on, maybe even the start and use of a VTS_02_01.VOB.
It would probably be safer in the beginning to set the project preset manually for either
    NTSC DV Standard
    NTSC DV Widescreen
    or PAL counterpart
depending on format on disc standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 and for NTSC or PAL setup.
The instructions on how to set the project preset manually instead of letting the project do it is a general principle and not restricted to your particular type of project. Please see information in following link about this and instruction for setting the project preset manually.

  • "File Not Supported" Message when importing AVCHD footage into Premiere on Mac

    Hi,
    What I am using:
    Camera: Sony FS100
    Media Codec: AVCHD
    Computer: iMac running OSX 10.8.2
    Premiere CS6
I have a quirky issue I have been trying to figure out.  I just bought a Sony FS100 camera which records footage in the AVCHD format.  When I import the "private" folder the camera creates into Premiere, it brings the footage in but always give me this error message: "File format not supported" along with a list of every clip on the card.  The thing is, despite the warning, Premiere brings in each clip fine into browser window.  I can preview the clips, edit them and export them out of the timeline with no problems that I have seen.  Additionally, if I go back to the "File" dropdown and select "Import Recent File", I can select any of the the files individually again and NOT get the error message when I bring in the clips.  I have imported from the Private folder amd the AVCHD quicktime inside the Private folder and, when I do, I get the above mentioned error.  But if I import any of the .mts folders that Premiere can see inside the AVCHD folder (each .mts folder seems to represent each indvidual clip), they come in perfect without the error message.  Additionally, if I locate the folder through the media browser, it brings the clips in without the error message.  I can then drag these clips into the Project window like I have been trying to do eith the "import" function.  So should I not be using the "Import" function with these files?  I want to because that is what I did with FCP?  Any help would be much appreciated!

The PRIVATE folder contains far more than just the media.  Those additional files are what's generated the message.
The proper method here is to use the Media Browser for importing.

  • Importing DVD-RWs into premiere pro

Hi I am a Media Students student doing a work project and some of the video I want to edit is on DVD RW small cds.
When I try to import them it won't work, usually it freezes or it won't let me select them to add them to my project.
They are from a Canon video recorder and I had to finalize them on the recorder to get them to play onto my laptop but now I need to edit them.
I've googled this problem but as I have only been working with this software for a year and am a student some of the answers I could not understand.
Do i have to covert them to different files or what can I do to get them onto my project?
    Please help,
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel,
Don't import direct from disc - rather, COPY the .vob files from the disc over to your hard drive, then import to Premiere

  • Importing DVD footage to iMovie!?

I'm a little frustrated, since I bought iLife mostly for iMovie (to edit my acting reel myself) and Garageband.
I've tried importing the contents of the DVD several ways (dragged it into the Media folder while iMovie was shut, then re-opening it) but nothing seems to work. Is it because:
    a- Perhaps I don't have the lastest OSX version - 10.4?
b- The contents in the DVD are not DV ready? (if so, how do I select the files to make sure they are DV ready?
    Help anyone?
    Thanks,
    Elizabeth

    Hi Liz,
I'm very sure, I've posted that workaround a thousands times here...
in case you're interested in the details:
for editing, you need every frame of the footage (you've heard, a video contains 30/25 frames a second...); DV, which is a socalled compressor, stores every frame (on tape, which has a similiar name, miniDV)... in result, you get ~13GB of data an hour of dv.... a video-dvd stores just 4.4GB... but you want to watch more then ~20minutes of video before changing the dvd... what to do? use another compressor, called mpeg2; that compressor is meant for playback... nice results, BUT not meant for editing purposes; the basic difference to dv is, it stores just the delta of many frames, that means, it stores the differences between two (or more) frames. if you want to edit such material, in a high computing process you have to "estimate" the content of every frame to restore it for editing purposes......
same with any other mpeg flavor, as is mpg1/2/4/hs263/hs64/.......
iM6 allows import of mpeg4 files, generated by some "toys" not meant for filming as mobile phones etc. that footage has to be converted first, into Apple Intermediate Codec.... high computation...... it would make absolute no sense, to convert mpeg2 content into mpeg4 into dv/aic.... mpeg codecs are lossy, meaning, any conversion results in a (dramatic) loss of pic quality.
socalled HD-camcorders store in mpeg2 too, but that is another cup of tea......
any detail in better english - do some wiki ;-)))

  • Importing DVD footage into HD project?

I have a project shot with the Panasonic AG-HVX200 - we shot 720p 24fps. It looks great.
I ripped a DVD and imported it, and it needs rendering and shows up as a smaller size, since it's SD footage.
If I stretch it, it looks worse than it did to begin with.
Since the DVD looks pretty good when you play it normally on a SD setup, why can't at least that image quality be achieved? Is it possible?
(In case you're wondering: I ripped the DVD without compressing and it's the exact same daa that is on the DVD itself. No copy protection is a factor in this.)
Thanks for any help and advice you can give me...
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

When I captured the Digibeta, it was on a different system. It was capturing digibeta on a Avid Nitris Symphony HD using the Avid capture codecs. And it didn't look great. You could tell that it was SD right away. Grainy and pixelated. But we only needed 8 seconds (4 clips) and we treated the rest of the footage to look grainy so that it fit in better.
I wouldn't run the footage into the HVX. Best signal you can get would be S-Video and that is a composite signal.
Transferring to digibeta then uprezzing won't get you better quality, but worse. You will be losing a generation.
Look...the best you are going to possibly get is the DVD rip that you stretch and render. You might try taking it to a post facility and paying tons of money to use a Terranex box, but it still won't be stellar. You have to understand how compressed DVDs are...they are HIGHLY compressed. Blowing that compression up big will not look good.

  • How can I import DVD footage in Final Cut Pro X

I want to edit a showreel of my own work in Final Cut Pro X (version 10.1.4). A lot of my old footage is only available on DVD. I need to get this footage into Final Cut Pro X but don't know how to do this. There are programs to convert DVD to DV but I don't know which one to use, and how to use them.

The script provided by MPEG Streamclip worked for me.
But there is an alternate way, which is basically doing by hand what the script does.
The actual component that is needed is stored inside an archive file in the inside the package. This file needs to be copied to a place where the system can see it.
Here are detailed instructions. Be sure you fully understand before putting any files in the Library folders, as described below. No guarantees, but if followed correctly I believe this works.
    1) Double-click the .dmg file.
    2) Inside there are two folders. Open the one that says "For Quicktime 6.4 or later..."
    3) Control-click the QuickTimeMPEG32.pkg and choose "Show Package Contents".
    4) Copy the file "Archive.pax.gz" somewhere else on your mac - I will use the Desktop as an example.
    5) Double click the copy of "Archive.pax.gz" on your desktop. It will expand and create a folder on the desktop called "System".
    6) Inside the folder called "System" is a folder "Library" and then "Quicktime", with a single file called "QuickTimeMPEG2.component".
This is the file that MPEG Streamclip needs!
    7) I suggest you place this file in your own user's Library. To do this, hold down the option key and select Library from the Go menu in the Finder. There, if it does not exist already, create a folder "QuickTime" and copy the component there. This should work.
Note: the script actually places the component in a different location - one which I think should not be messed with (inside /System/Library).
I think it should work in the user's Library, but if not I would put in /Library (the Library at the root of the drive) before trying the location above.

  • Subtitle workflow. Is it possible to import srt files into premiere and then export to Encore?

Hi, I'm editing a series of short documentaries that wil be published in DVD with subtitles, and I'm wondering if there's any way to import srt files into Premiere and then export the project to Encore.

You can easily (and better, IMHO) do what you want in Adobe Prelude.  It's part of the CC subscription, and may have been included with CS6.
Open the Ingest panel, navigate to the external drive where you have your source clips, make the thumbnails in the Ingest panel comfortably large, click a video clip to enable scrubbing, and use the J-K-L keys to navigate playback through the clips.  Put a check mark on the clips you want and be sure to select and set up the Transfer option on the right side of the panel before ingesting.  Don't select the Transcode option.
    Cheers,

  • C300 footage does not properly import, video playback in Premiere is frozen or just a red screen

After working with C300 footage for about 6 months now, this is the first time I've encountered this issue, and I haven't done anything differently with this project to my knowledge.
I am working with some C300 footage (not much, not even a full 32gb card), and when I bring it into Premiere some, but not all, of the clips aren't able to play back. In some cases the video will freeze on a frame while the audio continues playing, in other cases I'll just get a red frame while the audio plays. In all cases, the audio playback is fine, no issues.
The issue only occurs on longer, interview clips. I haven't had any issues with clips less than about 1-2 minutes in length. When I get the frozen or red screen, it will stay frozen or red for a while, upwards of a minute or a couple minutes, before the video comes back towards the end of the clip. This is pretty inconsistent though, I haven't noticed a pattern.
It doesn't matter whether the footage is rendered or not, issue remains the same. Nor is it an issue with lagging playback, if I pause the clip when the red screen comes up and wait it never catches up, never unfreezes. I have tried importing the footage multiple ways: dragging into the project from Finder; navigating through Premiere's media browser; going to File>Import. Same issue every time for the same clips.
If I try to export the clip, same issue. If I try to bring the footage straight from Finder into Media Encoder to output a ProRes422 version, same issue.
However, if I take the card structure, and copy it back onto a CF card and pop it into my C300, it plays back just fine. No red frames, no freezing, no issues. So it's not a corrupted card and it's not like I lost any data when copying from the card to computer.
I'm working with Premiere CC 2014 on a 2012 Macbook Pro (2.6ghz i7, 16gb RAM, 2gb VRAM), I've tried using OpenCL, CUDA and software only as the renderer, same issue with everything. I have also tried multiple computers with the same issue.
Any help would be much appreciated!

I can answer part of your comment ... PrPro is a beast of a complex and capable program, compared especially to VLC, a simple playback program. VLC takes the data off the drive and just plays it back ... PrPro takes the data from the drive as only a starting point, applies whatever changes have occurred in the timeline for clips & cuts, transitions, video & audio effects, and plays the RESULT of all that back in as close as possible to real-time. Each and every time through is a "new" compilation of data. Unless you specifically render previews for a selection, it's always "showtime" ... live processing of original with all modifications.
Part of the complexity of the program underlying the work is the built-in system to incorporate changes from AfterEffects, Audition, and SpeedGrade ... also as much in "real time" as possible, and again, without completely re-creating the new sequence as a "physical" file stored on disc somewhere. No other programs out there do that. It makes these more complicated & more complex in the code, and more demanding of system resources in many ways.
But as they are constantly working to improve the actual operation, far more capable. I'm a one-man operation, and most of the time my stuff flies through the combo of PrPro & Sg, with some Audition work thrown into most projects. Occasional trips to A3. Yes, I get glitches occasionally. No, my projects aren't 30-second but INCREDIBLY complex opening scenes for CNN or ESPN or someone, nor a modern complex commercial shot or a music video. Or ... Heavens ... a 130 minute feature.
Yet I know of quite a few people who do such work and mostly get through their projects in quite good shape, some of whom help out here regularly. It's a total bummer when YOUR machine is the one glitching. I understand. Right now, mine has pretty much stopped using my GTX770 video card and its 4GB vRAM, more than 29% of CPU, nor more than about 6.5GB of system RAM. Which as you might guess, slows down my playback & renders exponentially. I'll get it handled. But it's been a month or so.
The vast majority of users are NOT having this problem. Wish I was one of them, as do you. Best of luck getting this moving ...
