Import dvd to imovie

I converted home viedos from a vhs to dvd. what do i need to import dvd to imovie so i can edit and combine?

DVD is a finish format. Its primary purpose is for viewing. It doesn't lend itself well to further digital editing.
You'll have better results inporting the original VHS into iMovie through an analog-digital converter. Do you still have the VHS tapes?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

Are you saying that the Media Browser option of the Share menu is grayed out?
If so make sure you've selected the video and then try the menu.  Otherwise you'll need to inquire in the iMovie community as I don't do much with iMovie.

  • Import DVD to IMovie '08

Can anyone tell me how to import my homemade DVD (from VHS) to IMovie so I can then edit them & burn new DVD's

Okay, I clicked on AppleTV, nothing happened
If you compare the screen capture here with the one above, you should note a number of changes when you press the "Apple TV" preset option. First off, the "Codecs" entry changes from "MPEG-4/AAC" to "AVC/H.264/AAC", the "Encoder" entry changes from "FFmpeg" to read "x264", and the "Average bitrate (kbps)" changes from "1000" to "2500" which are all key changes. In fact, if hard drive space is not a problem, you can even change the bitrate to something in the 18000 to 22000 range (about what an "unlimited" SD encode would use) which shoudd be about the same quality as you would achieve if you were making a DV conversion. If nothing changed, then you either have a bad install or possibly installed the wrong version for your operating system.
I have the Video_TS on my hard drive & desktop..where do I drag it to convert it?
When the application opens, it should scan your optical drive(s). If it sees a DVD, it automatically selects it. If not, it should open the standard navigation window which you can use to locate the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive. Once you have selected it, press the open button to tell HandBrake that this is the folder you want converted.
As Karsten points out, HandBrake would not be the application of choice here for me. However, since you downloaded it, I am explaining how you can use it as a converter. My first choice would be MPEG Streamclip with the MPEG-2 component but this means you would have to invest about $20 and many using this forum only want a "free" work flow. Also, since you seem to be "drag 'n drop" oriented, iSquint (also free) may have been a better choice for you. You simply "drag 'n drop" all of the VOB files from the VIDEO_TS folder and drop them to the application and they are "batch processed" for you. Of course, then each VOB is converted as a separate file, it also defaults to MPEG-4 rather than H.264 requiring a manual switch if you want H.264, and still requires you to manually increase data rates to improve quality if being used as a source file in iMovie '08.
Frankly, with your apparent general lack of experience, my best recommendation would be to get some "one-on-one" time with another Mac user. Check you local area to see if there is an active Apple or Mac user's group nearby. Most offer SIGs (Special Interest Groups) that cover Mac basics and/or video related topics. In addition, many members are more than happy to provide the "one-on-one" assistance you may require.

  • Import dvd to imovie hd

I have some dvds (recorded ones) that I would like to import to imovie to make a small edit. is it possible? the video_ts files aren't readble. what can I do?

Welcome yonta to the  iMovie boards ...
//why not making use of the Search feature of this forum //
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
Drop2DV (free, requires installation of ffmpeg parts, google for it...)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in

Does anyone know how to do this?? The movie that I'm trying to import was created in iMovie on another Mac.....I burnt the movie onto a DVD, and I'm trying to import it into iMovie on a new Mac.

  • How can I import from homemade DVD to iMovie ?

In converting VHS to DV in iMov I use the original 1988 camcorder for obvious tracking reasons. However, I have one tape that was left in the hot sun on my dashboard and, no surprise, is very flaky, but only in camcorder playback. This happened years ago and I had to transfer the (tape only) into a new cartridge. And since I was playing back from a newer VCR it did as well as could be expected. Then last year I put all my VHS tapes onto DVD thru a Panasonic HD/DVD recorder. Since my homemade DVD has no copy protection why can't I import into iMovie? My only other option is to copy from Panasonic to DV tape and then import to iMov and I worry about quality losses with only S video coupling. All my tapes went to HD and DVD in XP mode (1 hour per DVD).

    Hi,
See this thread: QuickTimeKirk, "copying dvd to imovie project" #1, 08:53pm Oct 9, 2005 CDT
You'll need to convert the dvd back to a form iMovie can import, details are in that discussion. Hope that helps.

  • How do I get a DVD made with imovie by someone else imported into my imovie

A friend from out of town recorded a 2 hour video of my band performing. He imported the video from his camcorder into imovie on his mac and burned it into a DVD and destroyed the original files. I have the DVD and would like to import into my mac into imovie to create some individual song video files for our website. I don't plan on doing this frequently and I need software with a simple interface that is easy to understand. I have no problem purchasing software (but I'd take freeware if it were available) to easily rip the DVD into the best format to work with in imovie. I have imovie '08 but would use another software if it was easier or better. I don't want expensive or pro editions since this is likely the only time I'll do this. any suggestions?

You will need third party software such as Handbrake, Ripit; these you have to purchase.
    MPEG streamclip is free: http://www.squared5.com/
but you probably also need Apple's QuickTime component ($20): http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
With thanks to AppleMan, here are his instructions for doing this from a DVD to iMovie 8:
+I have found I get the best results when I use MPEG Streamclip (which is free). You also have to install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component which costs about $20. Once you install the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, you don't have to interact with it, but MPEG Streamclip needs it.+
+Insert your DVD in your drive. If DVD player runs automatically, shut it down. You should see your DVD as an icon on the desktop. Open it is a finder winder. You should see a folder which has VOB files.+
+Open MPEG Streamclip and drag these VOB files into Streamclip. If it offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes. You can do the VOB files one by one if you want to deal with shorter clips. Or, you can drag all the VOB files at once and create one long clip, or use streamclip to separate them into smaller clips.+
+In Streamclip, select File/Export using Quicktime and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. You may want to check "Deinterlace" in this step. Try deinterlacing and see if you like it. It depends on your final target media as to whether this will help.+
+Now you should have MOV files in Apple Intermediate Codec which can be imported into iMovie+
Post back if this does not help. You do know that decompressing footage from a DVD causes some quality loss? But, better to have the footage with some loss than not to have it at all!

You can do this with a free app called MPEG Streamclip and a $20 quicktime component from Apple.
