Import edited DV-movies to iMovie

How can I import edited DV movies, with transitions and music, to iMovie in a proper way? It seems to mess up the import. I have a lot of edited movies on DV cassettes which I want to organize on my iMac with all my other unedited movies:)
Thanks

Hi Carl,
I'm not familiar with other programs (hint: Adobe Premiere Elements 11 may be worth a try). But I'm about to import two minDV tapes to iMovie HD 6 (rather than using iMovie '11). The two recordings are edited masters that I archived back to miniDV tape 11 years ago from iMovie version 2. They comprise a wedding video that I've been asked to put onto DVDs (previously recorded back to VHS tape).
I'm hoping that, when imported to iMovie HD 6, all media, transitions, titles, music and so forth will play in the correct sequence - unlike what we are seeing in iMovie '11 (I'm keen to add chapter markers and then use a nice theme in iDVD). Otherwise, I will probably record direct from my old miniDV camcorder to my ancient Pioneer DVD Recorder (which has a Firewire 400 input/ouput jack).
I will let you know how this works out. If it is successful, at least we have one solution. But it won't help you, of course, unless you can get hold of a copy of iMovie HD 6. This version is no longer available, nor supported by Apple, but I understand can be purchased on eBay or Amazon (look for iLife '06). But first things first - let's see if this works with iMovie HD 6.
I'll get back to you Carl, but it may be in a few days - if you can wait that long!
John
PS I'm also intending to copy the final exported movie to USB flash drives, so that the recipients have both a DVD and USB stick (another reason to use iMovie).

i edited a movie on iMovie but when i try to upload it to youtube only half the video shows ( its only 3 minutes long) does it need converted? help?????

I have the same issue.  If you are exporting from iMovie version 10.0.1, I run into the same issues if I export directly to YouTube or if I export to file then upload to YouTube.
Google's help file doesn't properly address this problem and thier help is also out of date.  In talking to a support rep at Apple, they said the export to YouTube should just work or the exporting to a file then uploading otherwise it's an issue for Google support.
If someone can post a solution that works (is a streamable format - which is different than the format that YouTube accepts as it will accept many formats but take a long time to process them), I'd be interested to hear also.
    Thanks,
    Rob.

  • Can I import both photos & movies to iMovie?

  • Which file format (.avi or .mpeg) is best to edit home movies in iMovie

I am having VHS and Hi/Digital-8 home movies converted to digital files and saved on an external hard drive. I am a novice video editor & Mac user.  I plan to edit the movies for personal use.  The company I sent my original tapes to only converts to either .avi or .mpeg4. What is my best option?

I have this question too!  Surely there is someone out there who can help!?

  • Importing edited miniDV tapes into iMovie 11

I have a "file" tape of edited products on a miniDV tape, but now, as I try to digitally store it by dumping it into iMovie 11, there is a snafu.
The import process is flawless BUT, then- iMovie restructures the sequence of shots, I'm assuming by date. Not helpful.
Is there anyway I can dump the edited products as finished pieces, and have them stay whole, in the original (intended) order?

If you can load them back in the application where they were created, you can export them as a QuickTime Movie (.mov) with the DV codec.

  • Can't import audio from .mov into iMovie 10.0.3

When importing a .mov file with sound into iMovie 10.0.3, the audio does not import with the video. I have no sound. The file plays and sounds fine on the desktop. What am I doing wrong?

    Hello John,
Check out the first article for some troubleshooting steps to see if anything is preventing the audio from playing properly. Also try using QuickTime to convert the video in a different format and then import it into iMovie to see if that changes things.

  • Import Motion 5 movie into iMovie 11 with transparent background

I'm trying to import a movie from Motion 5 into iMovie 11 with a transparent background.  iMovie goes through the expected dialog boxes but the actual movie doesn't appear in the events window.  I know this is possible to do as I've been able to import the indymogul transporter effect movie (http://www.indymogul.com/transport) and use in iMovie 11 without too many problems.
The movie is "PAL DV" with a transparent background and I've tried all the combinations of "alpha, color, alpha + color, etc.".
Has anyone been able to do this?
    many thanks,
    - Dale Thatcher

Hi I am looking for clarification before buying the motion software.
@dale , Is it possible to create animated graphics and text with a transparent background, that can then be overlayed ontop of my Imovie projects using the Picture in Picture option?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How do I import a wmv movie into Imovie?

I have downloaded wmv movies 9there is no other option) but can't import them into Imovie because they are greyed out. I tried to save them in a different format but the only option apart from saving them as Iphone movies was as HD movies. However when I tried to save them in this format I got an alert that said it would put a permanent watermark on the saved movie which is an annoying FlipMac voiceover, unless I paid to upgrade to PlayerPro. Any ideas or is there no choice but to upgrade to PlayerPro?

Flip4Mac is the only way I know of. They are the only company that MicroSoft has licensed.

  • How do import my avi movie into iMovie? And camera help.

I know that these topics have been posted before and I've searched for a solution to no success. I want to import the m ovies I record on my Canon (Ixus 55/Powershot SD450) into my iMovie. BUt whenever I drag the movie file from my desktop to iMovie I get a bouncing icon and it tells me it is not a valid format. I'm sure I have the DivX codec on my Mac, can anyone suggest why it is not working?
While I'm at it, does anyone know of digital cameras of similar standing that will record mpg and iPhoto will erase the content of once it has imported?

If your DVD's are encrypted, Hollywood doesn't want you to be able to figure out how to copy them.  Encryption is used in all store bought DVD's.

  • Import Edited Video Into iMovie 8.0.5

I have an edited movie that I created on a previous version of iMovie. I saved the movie to mini DV tape. I want to import the movie in its edited version to iMovie 8.0.5. When I import it, it puts the clips out of order, esp transitions and titles. It seems that there must be some timecode in the DV somewhere that iMovie 8.0.5 is using to reorder the fully edited video. The question is then: How do you import a fully edited movie into iMovie without it reordering it into clips. If there is no option to import the clip, then I will have to re-edit the entire movie -- a true waste of time. Please help. Robert.

Hello, Robert, and Welcome to the Discussions,
iMovie 9 (v 8.x) cannot import an earlier version of iMovie and keep its edits. You will get the clips, edited clips, photos, but no effects or titles, and all the transitions will be converted to cross-dissolves.
If you still have the previous iMovie version used to create that movie, you can export it as Quick Time Full Quality and import that QT movie into iMovie 09.

  • Cannot import Finalize movie into iMovie

I have a Sony DCR-DVD103 and when I go to File>Import Movies I do see my Finalized DVD, but all the files including the Import button are grayed out. How can I import the Finalized movie into iMovie?
Upon connecting the Video Camera to my MacBook Pro, DVD Player launches. I quit DVD Player and go to iMovie>Import Movies, but never see how to import the movie into iMovie.

I have a Sony DCR-DVD103 and when I go to File>Import Movies I do see my Finalized DVD, but all the files including the Import button are grayed out. How can I import the Finalized movie into iMovie?
The "Import Movies..." option is for importing "edit" compatible files from a hard drive into iMovie '08. If the source files are not already "edit" compatible, iMovie '08 will not let you import them. Instead, try the ""Import from Camera..." option. If iMovie '08 properly recognizes you DVD camcorder, it will import your MPEG2/AAC content by converting all MPEG-2 "P" and "B" frames to "I" frames (which are editable), convert the AC3 audio to AIFF, and place both in an MOV file container with start and/or end time offsets to minimize drift between audio and video. The resulting file can then be edited in iMovie '08.
If the camcorder is not recognized by iMovie '08, then you will probably have to import the MPEG2/AC3 files to you hard drive and manually convert them to an edit compatible compression format manually using an MPEG-based, third-party conversion application like iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free but requires $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component), FFmpegX, (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware), or similar application.

  • Can't import Quicktime .mov into iMovie 10

Is it possible to import a Quicktime movie into iMovie 10?  I used to be able to do this with iMovie 9 but cannot get it to work with 10.  I can drag it into an event but no clips show up.   I can't believe that Apple would require a 3rd party product to get this to work.
As a separate rant, you used to be able to edit clips directly in Quicktime but Apple removed this functionality a while back; ie. deleting parts of clips rather than just trimming from the ends.  It is getting tougher and tougher to do basic editing even if you stay within the Apple ecosystem...

.mov can contain a variety of different movie formats not all of which are importable into iMovie 10.  Try playing it in Quicktime player 10 - does it say it has to convert?   If it converts it, the resultant file should import into iMovie 10 OK.  see: OS X Mavericks: Some files may be converted when opened in QuickTime Player - Apple Support
In Quicktime 10 the way to do this is to split a movie into clips and trim each clip as required.  These can then be imported into iMovie and joined as part of a project.  See:  QuickTime Player 10.x: Rearrange your movie’s content
Quicktime 7 Pro (which does allow removing 'middle' parts of a movie) still works in Yosemite
