Import existing site to iweb?

I'm switching from pc to mac, and having some web publishing issues.
I've got a couple existing published websites that I'd like to import onto my mac and edit. I opened iweb to try it out, and I can't seem to simply open the existing site within iweb. Is that possible?
If that's not possible, can someone recommend an HTML editor? I use Dreamweaver on my PC, but don't want to shell out an additional $399 for the mac version.
thanks.

I use BBEdit for all of my web development. It is very good but is geared towards advanced users.

  • Importing existing site made in another app into iWeb

    Hi,
Is it possible to import to iWeb a site created in RapidWeaver? Or, at somehow have any new iWeb site I do, and keep the work I did the in RW online.
I don't necessarily need to edit it, but I'd like to keep that RW site intact and available.
Also, Roddy, thanks for this link you put in another thread- I've got a lot to study:

No; iWeb cannot import existing sites. If you have the HTML and other files from RapidWeaver, store them on your hard disk, and then use iWeb to publish to a folder, posting those pages as desired.

  • Can I load an existing site in iWeb?

I have a website that I put together with an old program I can't use in OS Leopard (wouldn't want to anyway). I want to start using iWeb to work on my web pages. Can I load the pages of my site into the iWeb program to edit? How do I do that? Thanks.

No, iWeb can't open, edit, or import an existing site.

  • Import older sites to iweb 8

i have a folder with a bunch of iweb sites I think I created in iweb 7...recently I've build some sites in iweb 8...how do I import these 7 sites into iweb8?

Open the domain file that iWeb 07 used to create the sites with iWeb 08 and continue from there.  But you need the domain.sites file that was used.  If you don't have it or have a backup copy you'll have to rebuild the sites from scratch. Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • Can not open existing sites in iWeb 09

I can't open sites that I built in iWeb 09 after my hard drive has been reformatted, I can only open new.

if you were using time machine or any other backup system you should be able to recover a copy of the domain file.
All your iweb work is in the domain file, if that isn't frequently backed up, you lose your edited work. Your published site should still be fine but if you republish iWeb now it will overwrite your published site and it will be gone as well.
By default, the "domain" file is in your user/library/application support/iWeb folder.
You will have to start over if you want to make changes to your published site. If you have to redevelop your site, publish to a local folder until you get it the way you want it, because when you publish to your server it will overwrite your existing site. in the future keep your domain file frequently backed up and keep copies somewhere other than your hard drive.
Hopefully you were using time machine, if not I feel your pain.
    Sincerely, David

  • Importing other sites?

A million years ago when I used FrontPage, I was able to
download almost any regular HTML site on the internet. I used this
to study the coding and learn how other designers put things
together. I was able to do this without any login info or special
access - I simply clicked "import url XYZ" and the site downloaded.
Is there a way to do that with Dreamweaver? I still see sites
that I would love to study in-depth and learn how they did certain
things. I can muddle through the code using view source, but it's
    not quite as easy.

import existing sites from the www into dreamweaver... no.
there are software programs out there that allow you to do
that. Be careful of intellectual property infringement....

  • IWeb makeover for existing site?

i apologize for so many post! i could have combined my last two i suppose.
i have an existing site that is basically just one page of lots of text with loads of supporting documents --scans both jpg and pdf-- all of which are linked in the js openwindow fashion in each link.
is there any way to import this into iWeb for an iWeb makeover?
    thanks always

in fact, how do i put in links that are of the type:
i need this type of link because my site is like a book with supporting docs and by using this method the reader can simply close the linked document window and be 'where they were' to continue reading.

i apologize for so many post! i could have combined
    my last two i suppose.
    That's okay...we don't mind. Just ask away!
in fact, how do i put in links that are of the type:
You won't be able to do this in iWeb. There is no problem linking the files in iWeb, but in order to apply the javascript popup window code or otherwise have your links open in new windows, you will have to edit the HTML code that iWeb generates for your particular pages.

  • FTP publishing on iWeb to replace existing site - files not appearing.

On iWeb, I used FTP publishing to replace my existing site files, then deleted the original files but not only has the new site files not appeared in my public html folder but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Founderror was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
That's an indication that the index.html file that is created alongside the site folder by iWeb is missing.
Try publishing your site to a folder on your hard driive and use a 3rd part ftp client like the free  Cyberduck to upload the site folder and the index.html file.
Cyberduck or Transmit will let you view your server folder in a Finder like window where you can see which files are missing.

  • Lost iWeb Site .... need to import current site!

    HI
My iWeb site info was lost after a destroyed computer incident.
I didn't know about the domain file that should be backed up ... I do now... but I am left with a .Mac web site that I can't edit or import.
    What should I do?
Are there products that can import the site? Maybe I can continue using a different editor?
Is there a way to add new pages to my site ... to at least link to a new site? Or is my current site now frozen in time?
    Thanks for any advice
    Lee

Ok to rant now and then; we all have at one time or another!
Maybe this will help: understand that iWeb doesn't operate like other web apps, in the sense that it does not write html as it creates. It takes the data you place in it and then converts all of it into html when you click the Publish button. In other words, iWeb does the Save As for you when it generates the html necessary for the web.
I save frequently as I work in iWeb. If you have spent hours working with the application and you have created a substantial portion of a site, it is a very good idea to stop, make a duplicate copy of the Domain file, and place it in it's own folder, in another location. There is a free automator application available here which makes this process very quick and easy.
Get used to backing up that Domain file frequently. While it doesn't happen that often, there are posts in the forums about the inability to even save your work after hours of labor in the app. If you have duplicated your Domain file incrementally as you work, you will avoid the perils of this situation.

  • How do i open my pre existing iWeb created site in iWeb? (computer got wiped entirely without backup)

I have a pre exisiting website that i built with iweb about 2 years ago. Within the last month my computer got wiped entirely. I was unable to do a backup before this happened because it froze up in the middle of a software update. How do i open my site in iweb to continue editing it?? It is still online, is there a way to import it? Thank you!

Unfortunately, iWeb does not have an import feature. So, the website will need to be recreated. With, it being online you may be able to copy and paste your content from the site online to the one that you will be recreating in iWeb.

  • How do you edit an existing website in iWeb?

how do you edit an existing website in iWeb?

An existing website as in: editing one which has not previously been uploaded via iWeb?
I don't think you can. With the wysiwyg editing of iWeb, you can create a whole new website, make a new subdomain site or even upload a few extra created pages.
Thing is iWeb will only upload or save what you are making in it, therefore you can upload a whole new website to a domain, or upload them manually with ftp-clients. That also means you can't import an exsisting, for example html, script and edit it.
So in short: for as far as I know, you can't import whole pages into iWeb and edit those, you can only create and upload them.
Or as in: editing one I've already made, and uploaded on the same Mac?
Then simple make the changes you want, and hit the "Publish" button in the far down-left corner of the window. It will then overwrite the site you currently have.

  • Importing existing web url into .Mac

I apologize if this has already been covered. I have an existing website and I see that I can import that domain into iWeb. My question or questions: once I import it can I make edits to it and can I adjust it to any of the layout templates that are in iWeb? Thanks!

You would contact the company who registered your domain name and get them to redirect it to your .Mac site.
You might want to look at this page for more info....

  • Moving site to iweb

Is iweb used only to build a site, or is it possible to move an existing site over to it?

    Alisonlee...
You've guess right....iWeb is a one way site publishing machine. You can use it to build and edit your sites and then publish those sites. But there is no way to import sites/pages that have already been published previously back into iWeb for editing.

  • Importing existing HomePage content?

I've got a bunch of pages tracking my son's growth from birth to 18 months on my .mac site. I'm ready to add 20 months, but iPhoto is making me do it in iWeb, and I'm not sure that it will be linked to the rest of the pages after I publish.
Is there a way to import the existing pages into the iWeb site?

    Hi Dan
There is no "easy" way to import from homepage to iWeb, and you can also stil Export from iPhoto to a Web Page and then drop that into Homepage (I hope that all made sense).
To create a web page from within iPhoto, go to File>Export>Web Page, no longer the homepage one-click, thats reserved for iWeb!
You could recreate the pages in iWeb, assuming you still have the images in iPhoto, the way I do it is create an album in iPhoto for each page that I want and then select the whole album. Either from within iPhoto, clicking the iWeb button, or form the Media Browser within iWeb. Or you can drag the images back from your iDisk, preferably to a folder on your hard disk, and then drag them into iWeb.
You can link between Homepage and iWeb, to go from homepage to iWeb, you need to do the following:
You need to do a little fiddling to do this, as homepage does not allow redirect pages by default.
We are going to edit the index file of an existing (or new iWeb) page in homepage!
Once you have published your page, you need to open your iDisk, go to:
    iDisk / Sites / HomePageName / index.html
You need to open the index file, either in an html editor (Taco HTML Edit) or with Text Edit (To use Text Edit, launch the app, go to Text Edit > Preferences > Click Open and Save > Check “Ignore rich text commands in html files”).
After the <head> tag, you need to add:
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://web.mac.com/YourUserName/">
Then save and close the file, now the link should work as a redirect.
If you have more than one iWeb site and you want to link to one specific site, then you need to use:
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://web.mac.com/YourUserName/iWeb/SiteName/">
With this you add /iWeb/SiteName - I feel it provides a little more control.
Then to link from iWeb to homepage, you can either create a hyperlink, (See the Hyperlink page on www.willg4pb.com) to your homepage or you can create a page and fiddle with the html post publishing so the it appears as a link in the navigation bar.

  • Importing existing project to Project Online

Hello, my company recently purchased Project Online to add to our existing Office 365 environment.
From the Project Web App home page, I would like to use the Create or Import projects tile to add an existing .mpp project file that I have uploaded to my SkyDrive to Project Online, and manage this project from the Project Web app.
However, I cannot figure out how to do this or if it is even possible. The tile itself says "Create new or import from Sharepoint sites and project files.".  To import an existing project you're then referred to this site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-server-help/more-ways-to-create-or-import-projects-HA102923810.aspx.
On that site the only listed ways of importing an existing project are to import a Sharepoint task list (not what I want) or by connecting your local Project Pro to Project Online and publishing the project.
Importing or uploading an existing project file directly to Project Online would seem to be a fundamental basic usage of Project Online. Do I really need to also purchase Project Professional in order to import existing project files to Project Online?
    Thanks

Project Online cannot read mpp files, hence the reason for requiring Project Professional 2013 if you want to import these into Project Online - even if you only want to manage them via Project Web App from then on.
If you've not got Project 2013 Pro, you could cut and paste the existing task list from Project into a SharePoint list, and create the project from there.
The way forward will depend on the complexity of your schedules, remember that PWA does not have all of the capability of MS Project 2013
