Import for about 10-15 min okay then import picture freezes beach ball

I was importing my latest video from the camera Sony DCR-TRV8 (standard def mini DV camcorder) and it would import properly for variable amount of minutes, sometimes 10, sometimes 15 sometimes 2 or anything in between, before the picture freezes on the iMovie 08 import window and iMovie has basically crashed (beach ball, no interaction and no recovery). The camcorder is continuing to run playing its video and sound successfully on its little display, however none of it gets recorded after iMovie freezes.
I eventually have to kill iMovie and restart it (makes me feel like I'm on pre XP Windows again). I'm working on a Mac Pro (2.5GB RAM and plenty of room on the HD).
Has anyone else run into this? And know how to get around it?
Now this didn't happen on the previous 3 tapes (done in previous months), where it ran the length of the tape without attention from me and imported everything onto the system's hard drive and iMovie 08's library. I thought it might be that the system was going to sleep or something, but I made sure I was fidgeting with the window (moving it) occasionally this time and it did it anyways.
Any help would be appreciated.

Found [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6387869] ("iMovie freezes") that suggested one of the iMovie updates (likely 7.1.1) is the source of these import freezes. People have trashed their iMovie app and prefs, then did a re-install from the DVD and that fixed it for them. One guys claims he also updated to 7.1 and is still OK.
I downgraded to 7.0 and am currently importing a tape and it's gotten further than it has in the past. I'll let you know after I import a few whether it fixed it permanently for me.

My firefox stops responding and fades for about a half min almost every hour, OR MORE often.
I am typing a message or information, the screen fades to about half bright. the curser freezes in place and no key responds.
The information bar at the top of the page says "firefox not responding" in about 30 seconds it restores and continues as tho nothing happens.

I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.
Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!
I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"
After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!
After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read that Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)
For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.
    Enjoy. Hope this helped

  • I moved all my photos to my external drive. I then deleted my iphoto library and re-imported them from the external. Once iphoto created it's folder structure on my external, I deleted mine. Now my computer just "beach balls" all day when I turn it on.

i have a 2006 iMac with a 160 HD and 1GB of ram. I recently got a 2TB external hard drive and transfered all my pictures to that. Once I had a solid folder structure for my photos, I dragged them all to iPhoto. Once iPhoto had created its own folder structure of my photos, I deleted my own folder structure, so that I wouldn't have multiple copies. It all sounded like a great plan, but now my computer just "beach balls" every time I turn it on.

What does this have to do with iPhoto? If you're computer isn't starting up properly I'd be posting on the OS forum for whatever version of the OS you have.

  • Tips For Solving the Mac OS X Lion Slowness (Lots of Beach Balls)

    Hi Folks,
Just a quick list of tips for this issue that some of Mac OS X Lion users face.
The main symptom is that we get the Beach Ball on almost any task, it takes 4, maybe five times more time to do what we need to do. So depending on the schedule, it can drive us crazy. I was facing that, and started to think that Lion was a Windows Vista relative.
Please remind that the tips below involve backing up and restoring your system. If you are not careful, you may lose everything. You are responsible for your acts. Be cautious!
    How I solved my issue:
    1) Checked for Disk Permissions and the Disk itself:
    - Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility:
    - Click on your disk, and then VERIFY DISK. If everything is OK, move on. If it is not, REPAIR DISK.
    - Now click on VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. If everthing is OK, move. If not, Repair.
This step 1 is to make sure that your slowness is due to something related to the OS itself and not to permissions/disk.
If this solves the slowness, then you are OK. Now further steps are necessary. In my case, this just helped a little bit. The beach-balling reduced by 20% only. Still too slow.
    2) Do a full backup of your system.
I used Time Machine. Make sure you have all of your applications closed. So the backup will be full. If you fail to do a good backup, you will lose everything! Make sure you do a good one. Maybe do it twice on 2 different disks! Now you have been warned.
    3) Do a Full Restore of your entire system.
Now, get that Install CD that came with your Mac,
    - Put it on your drive, shut down your computer.
    - While holding the C key, press the start button of your Mac. It will boot using the Install CD that came with your Mac.
    To recover your entire system:
Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer. If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
    4) Remove the CD, and boot.
When I did that, the system came back very fast and responsive. No more beach balls (only on the really-intensive tasks), and everything was back to normal.
    5) So, what was it anyways?
Before doing this Backup/Restore, I was getting lots of DISK I/O ERRORS, specially during boot time (you can check that by shutting down your mac, powering it back on and imediatelly pressing Command-V - Verbose Mode).
Sure, the first thing in mind was that I had a faulty hard drive, but I checked it several times for errors (via Disk Utility), and nothing showed up.
So I decided to do a full backup/restore of the system. And it solved it, at least for me.
    My config:
    MacBook Pro (2009 edition) - 5 GB RAM - 640 GB HD - Mac OS X 10.7
    Regards.

Also my mac will not complete my 5 software updates, no idea which software, but it said it could not do it. Also backing up with time machine had failed twice today. Thanks

  • Dreamweaver opens then I get the beach ball.

    Hi there,
Dreamweaver CS6 on a Mac, Dual-Core Intel Xeon running Lion, 10.7.5.
I'm an occasional user of Dreamweaver CS6. In the last few days it has been playing up. DW will open the main screen with the welcome window and then show the beach ball.
If you wait long enough (30 minutes or more) the last job will open - but you can't touch it or do anything with it.
The force quit applications window shows DW alternating between responding and NOT responding. But at no point can I access anything with the mouse.
Following in the steps of others on the forum with a similar problem I looked in the console and found the following message:
23/10/2012 09:33:57.577 Dreamweaver: CFURLCreateWithString was passed this invalid URL string: '/System/Library/Frameworks/' (a file system path instead of an URL string). The URL created will not work with most file URL functions. CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPath or CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPathRelativeToBase should be used instead.
I have re-installed so many times now that I am certain this is of no benefit.
And I have created a new user account as suggested by Adobe and DW works fine there - then went back to my admin account.
For me the short cut is to boot up with shift-key held down which allows DW to open fully and work fine.
After doing this yesterday DW was fine, but today I open DW and get the beach ball again.
Clearly something is not right but I am at a total loss as to whether its a DW problem or and OSX problem.
Being an intermittent user of DW this is the first time I have had a problem with it.
I would therefore be most greatful if anyone can throw and envelope of light on this saga.
    Thanks
    Keith

    Hi Jon,
Thanks for your suggestion, although I haven't tried it I will keep a note of it just in case.
The reason I didn't try it is because not long after getting this issue with DW I noticed that some things weren't displaying with the usual fonts in Safari.
It would seem that somehow I have turned off some crucial fonts in Suitcase Fusion 4.
Having turned all local fonts back on again I have not experience the beach ball with DW.
But if it does happen I'll try your suggestion straight away.
Thanks very much for your time.

  • Why do I lose sound when I try to make a dvd from imovie to idvd.  The sound is all there in iMovie, but when I make my dvd, I have sound for about 3-4 minutes and then its gone.

I have made a 1 hour 30 minute dvd in IMOVIE.  The video and the sound are perfect.  However, when I make it into a dvd on IDVD, I lose sound after 3 or 4 minutes.  Any Suggestions?

    Hey MichiganMan32,
I found an article that looks like it applies to that audio issue you're experiencing. Check out the following troubleshooting steps here:
    Resolution
Make sure the audio track has not been muted in the timeline.
Switch to timeline view by clicking the clock button in the iMovie window.
There are three checkboxes on the right side of the iMovie window underneath the sound icon. These checkboxes correspond to the video track and two additional audio tracks. Make sure all three tracks are selected. Any deselected tracks are muted.
If you are using iMovie 3 or later, check the "Edit Volume" option to see if it is selected. If so, make sure the volume of the affected video clips is not set to its lowest level, or try deselecting the option to Edit Volume.
See if the volume in iMovie is set to its lowest setting. Directly under the Preview pane in iMovie is a volume slider. Set this slider to maximum volume.
Make sure the computer's audio is not muted.
Quit and reopen iMovie, then check the clip to see if it now plays with audio.
Check to see if any of the video clips you have imported are in the MPEG-1 format. MPEG-1 clips will lose audiowhen you export them as part of your iMovie project.
Quit and reopen iMovie, then reimport the footage from the camera. Play the newly imported footage and see if you now have audio.
If you are using an analog to DV converter instead of a camera, make sure the audio connections are good between your VCR or other analog device and the converter. Check the documentation that came with your converter for more information.
Check /Library/QuickTime/ and ~/Library/QuickTime/ for any third-party plugins. Remove them if present, log out, and log back in. Check to see if the issue persists. If not, check with the manufacturer of the disabled plugin to see if an update is available. Note: The tilde (~) represents your Home directory.
Note: "Apple Intermediate Codec" and "QuickTimeMPEG2" are Apple components. For more information about a particular plugin, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info. Look at the version string of the Get Info window to see if the plugin developer name is listed.
iMovie is missing audio on import, export, or playback

  • The memory card is no longer in my MacBook, but iPhoto says "preparing to import" for about an hour now. What do i do and how do i stop it!!!

When i put my card into the laptop it loaded only half my photos, other ones where just thumbnail of grey stuff with the white dotted outlines. I pressed import thinking it will just recover them when it imports into my library, but when i did the load bar came up and has stayed there for the past hour. I ejected/took out my memory card and iPhoto is still saying "preparing to import". HELP!!!!
i think my system is Lion OSx

I tried to force quit but it wouldnt do anything, so i saw on the left side here, about going into Terminal thing and write "killall iPhoto" so it quit this way!
And there was no error message when they didn't all load!
BUT now that i try and reopen it i get the rainbow pinwheel of death and its frozen on the normal dashboard!

  • Firefox crashes every few minutes for about 15 - 20 times and then crashes less often.

I have been using Firefox for several years with no problems. I have had my current laptop for 1 and a half years and have had no problems until about 2 months ago. Now Firefox crashes after only a few seconds several times (maybe 15-20 times) and then the interval between crashes tends to increase. I googled for help, and nothing has worked. I am still using Firefox 3.6.24 because when I upgrade to the latest version Firefox freezes while it is loading and it locks up my PC. At least with Firefox 3.6.24, I can get around to using it, although it is very frustrating wiwth all the crashes.
This is the link to the latest crash report submitted:
    2478ec0b-1112-4ba8-929e-78a97a7a5e96
While I have your attention, is there any way I can get Firefox to stop asking me if I want to update my version. I am getting sick and tired of having to say 'NO' (for the reasons above).

    OK,
I uninstalled Firefox and Adobe Flash Player. Then I installed version 3.6.28 of Firefox and version 10.3.183.20 of the Flash player as instructed in cor-el's post.
Result: Same problems -- Firefox continued to crash every few minutes.
So... I tried Tylerdowner's suggestions. I already had the latest driver version for my graphics card. Back in June, I had downloaded the latest version of Firefox which then was 13.0.1. It was the latest version available when the crashing problem started on my laptop. This version caused my laptop to freeze.
So today, I went to the website and downloaded the more recent version 14.0.1, and it appears to be working great. I have gone for more than an hour without a crash. I hope the good performance continues.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Hi, I have a problem with my Macbook, whenever I close the lid, it sleeps normally, but then, when I open it, it turns on for about a 1/2 second then shuts down. Then, when turning it on, I have to hold the power button, or it stays off. Please help!

My Macbook shuts down when I put it to sleep.

I would try each of these in order seeing if the problem is solved after each:
    1. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM and Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
    2. Boot into Safe Mode, then reboot normally.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    4. Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I have trouble with my computer accepting an audio CD for I Tunes to download.  It remains in the computer for about 10- 15 seconds and then spits it out again.  Why???

I have trouble with my computer accepting an audio CD that I want to download to ITunes.  It will remain in the computer for 10 - 15 seconds before ejecting it and not allowing me to download.  My ITunes is open.  Why does this happen or what am I doing wrong?  I have done this dozens of times before.  What makes this different and does it have anything to do with recent upgrades?

I'm not sure? I'm new to lightroom and it's lightroom 5 that I'm using. What is happening is I go to develop the picture in the developing section in lightroom and it gives me this message that says " Develop module is disabled Please purchase a license to reactivate the develop module." I shouldnt have to do anything else after already buying the cd and downloading it initially. It's already paid for? I'm so confused!!
why is the adobe lightroom 5 asking me to keep downloading the CD I bought at Best Buy store. I have already bought the CD and downloaded it on my computer but for some reason it gives me 10 days a then I have to download it again!!! Why is this its so an

  • My Gmail Inbox flashes up on the screen for about half a second and then disappears, leaving a blank screen with 'Done' at bottom left.

I can log in to Gmail as usual, but when it loads I get a very brief sight of my Inbox which then disappears. Sometimes it will load properly if I hit the Back button, but not always. I can load Gmail fine with IE. I have tried deleting cookies and cache, and run a full virus scan, with no luck. I have had this problem now for several days.

Hi, sounds like at least seriousHardware problems, most likelyVideo care/Logic board problems.

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
