Import from camera card

Is there a setting for Aperture where the app gives you the option Not to import photos already in the library?

Yes, it is in the Import panel.

  • Why did Lr5.7 add an identical volume to the destinations panel on import from camera card to which the new photos were added?

I've been using Lr5 for a little less than a year and had never used a photo management program before. Up until 2015 I downloaded photos to my external hard drive and imported to Lr from there. No problem. January 6 I decided to try to download directly from my camera card. Suddenly, on my destination panel an identical volume showed up and this is where the photos were imported to. I know it was identical because it matched the info on the original volume, and when I looked at my file structure in my HD, it was as it should be. When I tried to move the new files into the original folders I got a message the "a folder already exists in that location," which it of course would read because, as I said, my HD folders were formatted correctly. Here's a screenshot of how it looked:
I'm baffled. I found a workaround by setting up a temporary subfolder under my photograph library, moving them into that, and then into the correct folder. But I'm not sure it won't happen again. And I don't understand why it happened. Any help would be appreciated.

I am aware that if you remove any external drive the computer won't recognize it.
I safely ejected the SD card and closed iMovie then would reopen iMovie and insert the SD card multiple times and it did not work. I also tried restarting the computer a couple of times and also unsuccessful.

  • Lightroom keeps crashing since new update 5.6 when I try to import from camera/card

Hi my lightroom 5.3 was working sweet - however last week I updated to the Lightroom 5.6 ever since I have not been successful in my attempts to import from my three cameras nor through independently mounting the SD cards into a card reader -
I currently work with two Pentax K5's and a Fujifilm x100
Niether camera is working with the new Lightroom update....
    This is very frustrating -
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a fix

  • Is there a way to use import from camera with a cannon 7d CF card so that you can select only the parts of the clips that you want?

I used to use log and transfer and now in final cut x I know you are supposed to use import file, however you have to import the entire clip instead of being able to select an in and an out point of the footage being imported. This is not good for me because I have a limited amount of space and if I'm going to be converting everything to prores and only using 65% of the footage that is a huge waste. Any help or work arounds would be appreciated. Thanks!

I import from P2 and 7D cards daily, it's super easy, very fast, very simple, not so complicated.
    Here's how you do it.
1- CF card in a card reader, mount on Desktop, or copy whole card contents to a folder.  (P2 can read directly from inside cam)
2- Open "Import From Camera" in FCP X.
    3- Click "Open Archive" button.
    4- Point to CF card.
    * FCP X will act like L&T now.
    * Select a Range of a clip you want to import, click import button.
    * Select a different Range of same clip, click import button.
    * If you want whole clips, highlight one or more whole clips, import.
    * Imports are ProRes 422 files.
    * If you want a backup of the CF or P2 card "as is", click the Create Archive button.
Very simple, no need for thrid party BS.  It's really simple and easy.
Canon DSLR's have never been able to mount the cards while inside the camera.  You have always needed a card reader.

  • Can't import from SD Card

My i-Mac, running OSX 10.5.6 is no longer able to import photo files from my SD cards, into Aperture 2.1.2.
I have tried to import both using a USB connection between camera and computer, and by using a USM card reader.
Interestingly, there is no problem importing images from the same cards into I-Photo. This suggests to me that this is not a hardware problem, but is an Aperture problem.
    Any ideas?

If you copied the entire contents (even blank folders) of your SD card, then iMovie should be able to read it.
Choose FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE and navigate to the folder that contains the contents of your card.
Here is a sample of what you should see.

  • Hang during import from camera or media - HELP!

iPhoto hangs during import from camera or media reader. Works for 20 or more photos, then hangs. No response at all. Must force quit. After restarting the import, it will go further the next time, then hang again. And again. And again. Eventually the import completes. After that, all is OK until next import. VERY FRUSTRATING. Especially with 8GB media cards. ARRGH!
I've tried rebuilding iPhoto library (all options). Using iPhoto 7.1.5 on OS X 10.5.6. 4GB ram, intel dual core.
Help me Obe-Wan. You're my only hope.

I usually use the media reader. After the imports started hanging is when I tried importing direct from the camera to see if it made a difference. No difference.
I've reformatted the media. No difference. Still hangs on first import after reformat. Multiple media cards, all same result. Tried different USB ports, same result. Tried different media readers. Same result.

  • Cannot import from cameras

Hi. LR 4.4. Mac OS X 10.9.5. Sudden problem: LR does not find files to import from cameras. I read some similar problems here so: Changed cable. Changed cameras. LR FINDs the cameras and identifies them correctly. But when I hit import, in bottom left corner it says "finding files", circle rotating indefinitely and nothing shows up. I deleted LR preference file. Started new catalog. Strangely, if interestingly, it did then ONCE find 5 of 100 pix on my Nikon D7000, but not the other 95 photos, and still nothing on the Canon Powershot G7X.  It can import from the hard drive. Frustrating! Thanks for any suggestions. ---DG

yes, SS, that's what I'm doing and of course I can't FIND the card reader! Good idea though...

  • Import from SD card hanging

New laptop (toshiba qosimo w/20gb ram, ssd and hd), new os (windows 8), new version of lightroom (5.2) new bloatware (toshiba), new problems.
I can usually get one import from sd cards to work per boot in lightroom.  when lightroom ejects and a new card is put in (I run several cameras per shoot) it shows the pix thumbnails, correctly identifies the new images and then just hangs on import. the import bar jumps to about 2/3 and stops, even running over night does nothing.  At this point trying to use the windows explorer browser to access the sd card also hangs explorer. I can click the close "x" on the import status bar and it does eventually close though I must physically eject the card before the "Import Results" error dialog pops up.  I can then re-mount the sd card and manually copy the files into thir dated folders, making new ones as needed, and sync the parent folder in lightroom and continue working but that is very tedious.
I've made sure all bloatware is not indexing, importing, or any other bad behavior. I have tried killing of all apps and background bloatware item by item with no success. Rebooting allows me one additional import but hangs on the second sd card.
While it criples lightroom I doubt it's lightroom's fault.  Anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot?  If it matters I'm using the built-in SDHC card reader which is a realtek pcie unit running the "RiconMan.exe" process.  I've even tried killing that and letting it restart with no joy.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark
    UPDATE:
My third paragraph made me think it could be connected to the built-in reader so I searched around and eventually "borrowed" my wife's USB reader.  I was able to do 2 imports on it after the 2nd import on the built in reader had failed.  Looks like it's a conflict between realtek's reader and lightroom.  I can copy files from several sd cards in explorer so this problem only seems to afflict lightroom.

YOur card should be listed near the top of theSidebar. Select it and check the box above to Open Photos for this device.
You can also make Photos the default app in Image Capture.

  • Opened Trial, keeps crashing on import from camera of AVCHD

    Hi
I have a MBP 15" 2.66ghz running 10.6.8 with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 33M graphics card (also has the Intel HD Graphics card). I want to import .mts files from a Panasonic GH2 of interviews and location shots.
I'm basically following a Larry Jordan video: where he opens FCPX, creates an event and imports from camera. He's importing AVCHD clips and I watch as he chooses a folder which comtains ONE folder, titled 'Private'. He clicks on Private, clips appear and he chooses options and clicks import.
I did the exact same thing. Of course, AVCHD folders normally contain 3 folders one of which is named 'Private', but since he choose it I did too. There were 4 clips I selected to import without choosing Optimizing or any of the options on the dropdown. I quickly saw no progress was being made and within seconds the ball started spinning and I had to force close.
So I tried with one file--crashed. Tried choosing the folder with 3 folders including Private and copying one file--crashed. Finder too became dysfunctional and I had to force shutdown and restart several times.
Finally, when I started up FCPX wouldn't open. I had wanted to try transcoding one file. While I wait to give it a whirl:
    Is it the .mts files?
Is it my graphics card or processor?
I checked FCPX Prefs but didn't see an indicator of ram being used, I have 8gb and would allocate all if helpful. Is it likely to transcode with ease?
ps I also have FCS and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.0.0.

Yep, thx, excellent idea. In sys prefs one can do that--done.
I also did some testing to replicate problem: new user, safe mode. Crashes kept occurring.
WHAT WORKED and has made a demonstrable difference: Unchecking background rendering in prefs and pausing rendering in that little pop-up window that shows background activities while importing.
Immediately, I could import more files, tho so far I've only tried one at a time. Today I will try multiple file imports at same time.
I wonder what else I can do to limit FCPX ******* around while I import?
STILL CAN"T IMPORT long files, 24-min or 30-min files, without it crashing. Tho I come awfully close, 80%+, even 90%+ before stopping. Usually, it says 'import failed" and "try re-importing' and when I do that it crashes. I will try again, if still no success I will consider importing sections of one file. Some interviews are 1 hour+.
WILL EVENT SIZE cause crashes as my ability to import grows. That's what happens with Premiere Pro.
RESTABILIZING FINDER (Can a brother get a hand): Part of the problem post crash is that Finder is affected: Often I have to force shutdowns, attached drives can't be detached, even "Finder not responding". If my FCPX prefs get corrupted the same could happen to some Finder prefs.
FINDER HELP: After what I described, what prefs could I trash or other actions take to help Finder?
Thanks again for your help, Tom!! All the best!

  • Some JPG and AVI files imported from camera to iphoto, but not all

I just imported from camera to iPhoto using card reader and half the pics and a couple movies came over. The rest aren't recognized by my iMac, even though they say JPG and AVI and still run fine on camera. I installed Perian plugin a while back at the recommendation of one of you, which solved that problem and I just installed the recent update. I used time machine to restore old version, but that didn't work. I don't know if this is a Quicktime (v 7.4.1) issue or a problem with the flashcard. I tried opening via photoshop and iMovie. Photoshop CS3's message says "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found." iMovie, when I try to drag movie into it says "The file could not be imported: ... Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048". Hopefully one of you knows what is going on. Thanks!!!

Are you running a "referenced" or "managed" library?
    Give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Only Import from Camera available, everything else is greyed out!

    Hi there,
A user of mine is using iMovie 08 and after I start the app and go into File, I only have import from Camera available, everything else is greyed out and cant do anything.
I have delete prefs from Lib/Prefs and ~/Lib/Prefs, inc all com.apple.imovie and iapps pref files.
The only thing I havent tried yet is to rule out if its just the users account by logging in as another user,
    Cheers

This happens regularly for me (w. a FW800 card reader or with images already on the drive). I don't think it actually stops -- it just goes into deep background mode and does stop updating both the Activity window and the main app window.
I suspect some combination of limited hardware and a drive I/O glitch. I have never noticed it happened on Libraries which I store on external drives (yes, I do that) -- only on Libraries on the boot drive.
It (almost?) always clears when I close Safari. I don't know if this is specific to Safari, or that closing Safari releases the resources Aperture wants. I have closed everything but Safari, and seen the problem persist. Within 20 sec. of closing Safari, though, Aperture is back to steaming through the import.

  • How do I delete the media after import from camera?

How do I delete the media after import from camera?

The usual procedure with video is you backup the card contents onto an archive drive. You import from the archive drive making a copy (professionals on set make two copies), and once the backups and import are verified, the card is reformatted in the camera.

  • Import From Camera problem

I thought I'd try out the "Import From Camera" script as the first part of my workflow. I had a card with about 30 images on it taken with my Canon 1DMkII. I typically rename my files "YYMMDD_hhmmss", and although there is no explicit way to do this (EXIF Capture Date) with IFC it appeared that using the "modified date" option gave the same results.
I ran the script and immediately encountered several errors - the script said that "One or more of the downloaded image filenames match filenames in the specified destination folder ..." I knew this wasn't the case since all images were taken at different times.
Is there another way to use the EXIF date within IFC? Is this a script I can modify myself in some way?
It does almost everything I want, but the renaming part is the deal-killer.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Try using a card reader.  That way you can open the memory card as it were an external volume, select and drag the files in small groups to a folder on the Desktop. That way you can isolate those files that are causing the problem.
If there are only a few files that won't cooperate you may have to sacrifice them so you can reformat the memory card using the camera and then test it with some test photos and videos.
Is it just videos that won't copy?  See if you can determine which files are causing the problem.

  • Confusion re: photostream, import from memory card, events, etc.

confusion re: photostream, import from memory card, events, etc.
Up until a few weeks ago, my travel-photo-handling went like this:
Each night, I download photos to my iPad for safekeeping. They, of course, wind up in Photostream.
When I return home, I connect my camera card to my iMac (where I have my iPhoto library), and I can "see" the photos on my memory card - the photos which, although in Photostream, I have not yet manually downloaded.
    I select and ownload them.
New Events are created in my Library automatically, as I have my preference set to Autosplit Events.
This week, I came home from a trip during which I had downloaded to iPad during my time away.
I connected my memory card to the iMac.
iPhoto did not "see" any photos to import - as far as iPhoto was concerned, those photos were already in my Library.
I had iPhoto show all photos on my card, selected the photos from my trip (I shot over 1000) and clicked "Import Selected"
    iPhoto says they're duplicates.
However, the photos have NOT been downloaded manually and there are NO Events in my Library for those days.
Note: yeah, they're in Photostream, but IN THE PAST - and I mean literally up until 3 weeks ago - the photos have ALWAYS been "visible" and importable even if in Photostream, as long as I had not yet manually downloaded to the computer.
So my question, I guess, is multi-part:
What changed in iPhoto and/or Photostream in the past couple of weeks?
Why are Photostream photos suddenly considered to be the same as the photos on my card which have not yet been manually downloaded to the computer?
What the heck is going on?
I hate having duplicates, but I also hate being confused by something that used to be really easy, then - with Photosream - became annoying, and is now simply perplexing and sometimes imcomprehendable.

Check iPhoto's Photo Stream preference pane to see if the highlighted checkbox in the screenshot below is checked.  If it is then all photos taken by the iPad are automatifdally being imported into your library.
Go the the Events mode and check the View ➙ Sort menu option to verify where new Evens will be located, at the top of the window or the bottom.  Then check to see if your PS pictures are there.
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Connect your iPad and import all photos.  Dismount the iPad, close and reopen the test library, connect the iPad again and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does'nt then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.

  • How Can I Delete Originals I Don't Care to Keep When Importing From SD Card?

    Hi All,
Just installed LR3 thanks to Santa. Have been going thru the video tutorials as well as the Lightroom_3_Help PDF and Lightroom-GettingStarted_Lo PDF but I can't figure out how to simply delete files from the gitgo when importing from SD Card or from my HDD (files already moved to HDD but not yet culled or imported into LR3). I was hoping I could, in LIBRARY, just r/c on a file that is plainly not worth keeping and just delete it so I dont have to do it later. Seems like I could, this way, be able to concentrate more on the shots requiring editing.
Also, need suggestions as to how I should import my files using DNG, Copy, Move, or Add. First off, I am not a working pro but am an occasional serious amateur. I'm picky and I like things to look good the first time and I like options.  The pix already on my HDD are in the PICTURES folder; those imported from SD card get moved to that PICTURES folder. I have, in the past, moved the processed verssions to a different DESTINATION folder - now I still have the originals and I have processed copies to post and share.
I understand that LR3 does ND editing but I assume that if I only keep a DNG then any time I want a JPEG or PNG of a picture I have to open LR3 to make one. Since I only have been shooting a few hundred pix a year (though with my new D5000 this will change) I am not gonna load up my HDD any time soon. So, is there a way I can make a DNG file, keep the original RAW or JPEG file AND save a processed JPEG or PNG copy in my DESTINATION folder in one swell foop?
    Thanks in advance,
    Phil in San Diego

The LR Exchange site has three plug-ins that allow you to keep a "mirror" copy of your DNG/RAW images in JPG format for use by others without having to go into LR and generate them when needed.  The link is:

One of them should help you with this.
