Import from digital video converter

I am new to Mac and very new to iMovie.
I have a mac Mini with OSX 10.4.11 and am using a DAC 200 Digital video converter to import video from a VCR (converting old tapes of the family) via Firewire.
I turned on the Video converter and the camera import window opened automatically. I recorded the tape (about 2 hours) and clicked DONE at the end of the tape. iMovie then automatically generated thumbnails. This took about 45 minutes. When done, the imported video was only 42 seconds long. I repeated the process and the resulting video was only 1.9 seconds.
What did I do wrong? I looked at all the settings and nowhere did i find something which seemed to be responsible for limiting the video length. How do I get the full video?
and how do I prevent the automatic thumbnail generation?
Many thanks
Mark

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Firstly I don't know anything about your converter, but wonder if it comes with any software or gives any indications of what format it converts the analogue to. It seems rather strange that it would take 45 minutes to create thumbnails for 42 seconds of video, take a look at your events folder (by default its in home/movies) and look for the actual imported files, check to see if they are really only 42 seconds long.
imovie 08 is a very new product and can be a little quirky, ensure you are following instructions for your converter and pay particular attention to doing things in the right order.
If you continue to have problems you could try capturing your video in imovie 6 or in QT pro.

i'm a little confused about the difference between 'apple video adapter'

and a digital video converter -
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php
i don’t want to mirror my ibooks monitor, but create an enlarged preview screen in fce
    can my ibook do this?
i also have another problem. The Canopus converter uses firewire, and i only have one firewire port.
To add, i want to upgrade from a usb2 external hard drive to a firewire! just because i've recently read that it will work better as a scratch disk.
i seem to have too many devises and not enough ports.

    About the first question:
    - the Apple Video Adapter allows to use an external TV screen in place of your iBook screen. I have it but never use it since my video (iMac 20") is far better than a TV screen.
    - a Digital Video Converter, instead, converts DV video into analog video and viceversa. In your case you could plug the DV end (firewire) to your iBook and the analog end to a TV set, and use it to "Print to Video" the Canvas of FCE during editing or previewing.
The main difference is that in the 1st case all you do on the iBook appears in the TV screen, in the 2nd case only the canvas output of FCE (or iMovie if needed).
To edit video use the 2nd solution only; this has the advantage to show in real time, during editing, exactly the final result of your movie (colors, interlacing problems, etc.).
You might have another option: most digital camcorders include a video converter and can be used in place of a stand alone Video Converter; if your digital camcorder allows it, use it in place of the Video Converter.
About your second question, if you switch to a firewire external drive you should be able to daisy chain your camcorder (or digital video converter) to the external drive, so the single firewire port on the iBook should be enough. Just be careful, I know some combinations of camcorders/hard drives don't work well together when daisy chained... Not my direct experience, but I read it in these discussions.

  • Unable to open mp4 files from legato video converter

I converted my hi8 tapes to mp4 files using legato video converter.  I am unable to open the mp4 files in adobe premiere 11.  Please help

    double nn
    Thanks for the additional information.
This is what I would like you to try.
Make copies of your present AVCHD.mp4 file. And, then go through the process of renaming the file extension ONLY from:
    mp4
    to
    .mts, m2t, m2ts, .mov, .avi.
Then set up a Premiere Elements 11 new project by
    a. Setting your own project preset NTSC DV Standard
To do that, in the Premiere Elements 11 workspace, File Menu/New/Project. Then in the New Project Dialog, set for NTSC DV Standard, making sure that you put a check mark next to "Force this Project setting on this project" before you click OK.
    b. Then import your AVCHD.mp4, AVCHD.mts, AVCHD.m2t, AVCHD.m2ts, AVCHD.mov, AVCHD.avi into Premiere Elements 11 with its Add Media feature.
Do any of the files with the different file extensions import?
We will be watching for the outcome.
    Thanks.

  • Iimporting into iMovie from Digital Video Cassette

I am using iMovie 3.0.3 which I understand is the least reliable version. I am trying to import roughly 60 minutes of footage from my Sony Digital Handycam. The material is recorded on a Digital Video Cassette. When I just play it through iMovie, it plays with no problems. As soon as I hit import, the video starts looking like it "stutters" and then it just stops every 5.10 seconds or 10.20 seconds. No error messages and straight to blue screen
    Any suggestions? Thanks

    Hi ntannous:
This may or may not help in this situation, but the GarageBand Fix works to fix some import problems-really.
First-if your camera can control the camera but not see the video,
    *Open Garageband
    *Play a note or two
    *Close Garageband
    *Open iMovie
    The camera should work now.
    If not, look here:

  • FCE: Possible to Capture SD footage from digital video cam?

Ok, probably a daft question this. Don't laugh...
I'm thinking of purchasing a digital video camera that uses SD cards. I currently use a MiniDV cam and connect via Firewire.
Is it possible to capture footage shot on SD cards into FCE?
And, if so, should I use USB from the camera, or insert the SD card into my card-reader?
The camera I'm looking at is able to record HD footage to a 2gb SD card (about 40 mins worth)
    Thanks for your time!

Cheers Tom, I think you just saved me a small fortune..

  • No right channel audio on import from stero videos

When I import files using the import from camera command I loose the right channel from my videos but when import my videos using the import files command and import videos previously captured with FCP 7 the right channel is there. Why is FCP X not recognizing stero videos when importing from camera? Anyone else having this problem?

I have had exactly the same problem. See my posts. I found this happens when creating a camera archive from mini dv. When importing direct into the event (not using an archive), or extracting the files from the archive in the finder and importing directly using import files, it works! Please report the bug to apple.

  • Burn DVD from Digital Video (DV)

I have a one hour project on Imovie. When trying to burn it on IDVD I stopped the process after 15 hours. I thought it was caught up in some kind of loop. Someone said to convert it to a DV -Digital video file. I did that. It took 36 hours to convert! It looks great but the DV file is 23 Gigs!
I would welcome any suggestions on how to get this project onto a disc.
    Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi pooper,
(Guten Tag is perfect!... but Karen is female, Karsten the male form...)
I think, we have it, ....almost....
    first things first:
codec - your video is lots of frames, 30 frames per second/fps with thousands of pixels.... that is a lot of data! 1 hour of tape contains ~13Gigabyte of data.... that data have a special "store form factor", we like to say compressor, or codec, tape and iM use "dv" (=codec, miniDV=cassette type).... a videoDVD fitting 1 hour video just needs for the same movie just 2.2GB data - how's that? because it uses another compressor, mpeg2... very efficient, but just for playback...
    BUT!
you said, your dv file is 23GB... <calculating> your project is LONGER then, letssay 115 minutes?
iDVD just accepts files of up to 120minute length, it doesn't care for size.... (I wrote 115min, because iDVD needs some "room" for menu, music, buttons, backgrounds etc...)
    latest guess:
    your project is too long!
    (hopefully it is that easy...)
    concerning disk space:
for letting your Mac work properly, the free space on your internal drive counts... the ext. drive is just for "storage", not for the files, your Mac writes/reads "secretly"... and: your Mac will not complain runnig out of space, it will just die... oops, no!, it will freeze. first getting slower, then freeze.....-
sorry for speaking so ... childish, but a) complex process b) me no english c) I don't know what you know....
tell us the length in min:sec of your project...-
(HA! this post gets a yellow star, I'm soooo sure... lalalala.... :•) )

  • IMOVIE 6 PROBLEM IMPORTING FROM A/D CONVERTER

I have a number of VHS tapes to put on DVDs -- when importing them through a Pyro A/D converter, everything is fine except that at about 40 minutes in I get a message which says "You are running dangerously low on hard drive space .........".
The space monitor in the lower corner says about 100GB available when this is happening. I spent about an hour with Apple Tech support but nothing fixed the problem.
Any suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.

Try an early version of iMovie say iMovie3.0.3
I use a Sony Handycam Digital8- the one with TAPE.-but the more expensive one with input options.
You will need to break up input to maximum of 9 minutes for this version of iMovie to work.
I used iMovie5 with this interface to import from a VHS player, so you may be better off using iMovie version 5.

  • Importing raw digital video from a deck

    1. imovie says it is importing at 3/4 speed. How do i get normal speed so on playback I can get good lip synch?
    2. the app does not appear to be importing all the data that i am sending it thru the deck. Any idea why this is happening?

The problem (I discovered) is that the files are "muxed" which means that the audio and video are somehow intermixed, so they need to be converted into a standard that iMovieHD can read, like "DV"
There is a shareware called MPEG STREAMCLIP that converts video into other things. I tested it and it does work. I just need to figure out the most efficient way to import, convert and open in iMovie.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
I think it is universal which is cool.
I am curious about the workstation that you mentioned to run windows software. Where can I find that?

  • Best Analog-to-Digital Video Converter?

What's the best and most inexpensive analog to DV converter for importing video from a VCR onto my eMac?
I'm using iMovie 4 if that makes any difference...
    Message was edited by: daftboychemist

    Faedo,
    Cheapest ways:
    1. Do you have a DV camera? If you do and it has "digital in" then you can take the output from your VHS player, route it through the camera and into your PC. The manual would explain if it is a feature.
    2. Secondly, search ebay for Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge. This is a hardware converter that takes the analogue and does the conversion for you.
    Good luck.

  • Canopus ADVC 110 Advanced Digital Video Converter

Anyone out there have one of these? Anyone used it with iMovie? (And, is iMovie strictly for Macintosh? Because I have a Mac and don't know from Windows.)
    My story so far:
    1. I created some titles in iMovie for a video I'm making.
    2. I bought this high tech equipment in order to add music to the titles and transport the whole thing (titles and music together) to my camera to add them to the video. (In this case, the music is from the camera, but it doesn't matter; it can come from any source with the right sort of jack.)
So far, so good. The equipment is connected, and when I follow instructions, all the right lights come on and everything goes fine...to a point. It says the data is supposed to be captured to my computer, but gives no clue HOW or WHERE this is to occur, or HOW I am to get it into iMovie if supposing I could find it. If the converter actually did anything, nothing new has shown up on the Hard Drive or the Desktop and I don't know where else to look for a file or whatever form this data is to appear in.
I went to their official site and tried joining their forums, http://forum.canopus.com/ but they are snobs and won't accept registrations from any email addresses ending "@msn.com" or "@hotmail.com". These are the only two I have! I wrote the webmaster about this and if nothing else I suppose I can register under a friend's email address and then have them send me the information. I also wrote "sales" at the company regarding support. But I may get help there and I may not, so that's why I'm asking.
Anyone have one of these? And anyone specifically use it with iMovie?
    That's all for now, thanks.

At this point I'd be happy to get anything FROM the camera TO anywhere on the computer, let alone iMovie specifically, but nothing comes up on the screen such as "Save To" and then an option to import to iMovie--otherwise I would certainly do it. (I have no idea if anything I tried to transport ever made it to the computer in any form.)
As to why I was trying to do audio only--I was trying to follow the directions to "Audio Capturing Mode" and a sidebar on the page says, "Caution: If video signal is input during the Audio Capturing mode, the subsequent operations can not be guaranteed."
Well, since all I wanted was the audio anyhow (as the video will be the titles), and since they don't give a CLUE as to connections (ALL the instructions say are, "Play the audio data to capture"--not a THING about connecting it to the converter AT ALL, let alone where or how--now I guess they figure anyone stupid enough to play the audio into empty air without a connection deserves what they get) I plugged in the audio jack only--there is only ONE audio jack (on the camera) but TWO audio holes (on the converter), and they don't give you a CLUE as to which one is correct, so I just went eeny, meeny, miney, moe, and chose the red one (Audio in-R) as it's closest to the yellow one (Video--which I didn't connect because of the vague but seemingly dire threat at the side of the page). I put the jack in the hole on the front of the converter. If they want you to use the back one, they should SAY SO.
Sorry, can't waste anymore time in guesswork without actual instructions from someone who knows how the confounded contraption is meant to work. Thanks for the answer.

  • Importing from digital 8mm camera to imac.

I want to import a heap of movies from an 8mm camera to my imac. I know that imovie will handle the process but I have limited hard drive space. Can I go straight to an external hard drive? Alternatively, can I import to imovie, then move/cut-paste for bringing back in and editing later?
One more thing, can I delete the full movie files I have imported into imovie once I have taken the bits I want and put them into a project without mucking up the project or does it have to stay there until the project is completed?

  • Importing from iPhone video camera?

I'm about to start a an audio/video project and wanted to just put this out there for some advice.  3 Camera iPhone 4 shoot, 1 prerecorded audio track. Not planning on using the audio from the iphones.  I've never imported iPhone video into FCE. Any suggestions? Any know problems with this? I'm planning on doing it all in HD. Then syncing the video to the audio track. (The audio track is just an Mp3.) Will this just be super easy and straight forward? I've done this same thing with Canon Vixia HD cameras before and it was no problem. Does the iPhone present any particular issues?
    Thanks

Thanks Tom. (BTW, love your book!)
So, how do I convert these files? I've always just dragged things into the timeline before, then rendered them, but I don't want any funny business. Is there a specific way I should prepare these files before I bring them into the project? I'm always a bit confused by this and have had some bad experiences with projects that looked squashed or stretched.
    Thanks for your input!
