Import from Eudora - no messages in mailboxes

Having used Eudora for too many years, I now have a real mess in the references to attachments. Many of the attachments are no longer accessible from the messages that they arrived in, even though they are still in the attachments folder.
I thought I would try to clean up some of this mess by having Mail import the old mail from Eudora.
I kicked off Mail to import my Eudora mail, all 700MB of it (mainly attachments). 20 minutes later, it had finished. All the mailboxes were there. But there were no messages in them. Not-a-one! When I looked at the mailbox files, they were all very short. There were some attachments, but only 96MB of them.
I tried quitting and restarting Mail, rebooting the machine, and telling Mail to rebuild the mailboxes. Still no messages.
Does anyone have any idea what may have happened?
Cheers
David

David,
the Eudora import of Mail has some serious shortcomings (like taking 20 minutes...) - you might want ot consider re-importing your Eudora mail using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner - it should give you much better results (the imported mailboxes initially will appear empty as well but rebuilding them should solve this issue - I guess you should try that first)

  • Importing from Eudora problems - html messages being displayed in plain text and problems with attachments

    Hello,
I hope you can help me. I've imported all my emails from Eudora into Outlook 2010 but I have a couple of problems.
All emails that I've imported which had attachments with them have a notice on them saying the attachment has been blocked. I can always browse to the folder whereb my old attachments are stored, but this is still inconvenient.
Secondly, all my messages that I've sent in the past (html) are being displayed in plain text, which is making them difficult to read because of all the html tags being displayed.
Also with emails that I've sent in the past- there is no record of any attachments being sent with messages which I know had attachments with them.
Any ideas? I've trawled google and had no luck except finding programs that cost $70 that can import everything properly.

    David:
I know this is a very old thread, but did you every figure out a way to fix the formatting of imported Eudora mail?
I just "upgraded" from Eudora to Outlook 2010 ...
and have 10 years worth of HTML formatted e-mail that now shows up as plain text with embedded html formatting ...
apparently it is a long-running problem that has roots in the way Eudora formats messages ...
Outlook and other e-mail clients all seems to have issues with importing and do not properly recognize HTML-formatted messages from Eudora ... very sad that I can no longer really "read" my old e-mail at this point ...  :-(

  • Import from Eudora

I'm finally making the transition from Eudora to Mail.
Mail imported mailboxes from Eudora. However, it only imported the mailbox names, not their contents. That was disappointing.
I suppose that's the way it's supposed to work, but I want to get a reality check on that.
Is there a way to import Eudora mailboxes, indcluding all the messages in them? How?
I guess I could email all those messages to myself, but there must be thousands of them.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

  • Can't import from Eudora into Mail

I'm trying to import mailboxes from Eudora into Mail. Unfortunately, Mail crashes right in the middle of the process.  Has anyone had this problem?  If it can't be solved, is there a way to do this manually? Finally, if all else fails, what do you consider to be a good email program other than Mail?  I'd like to upgrade to Snow Leopard and

Last I knew, Eudora ran fine under 10.5.8
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Import from Entourage skips messages and subfolders

I'm try to import message into Mail 4.4 (1082), from Entourage 12.2.8 The import seems to work correctly (I get no errors). But when I check the folders and subfolders structure, Mail simply skipped the content of many folders and subfolders. In other cases, it seems to have imported in the main folder, all the content of its subfolders, and all the subfolders themselves are empty..

I have had a similar (and worse problems). Here is a list of things I've tried:
    1. Import directly from Entourage using Mail.app File->Import
I tried this for all my mail at once, but the import silently choked somewhere, and only imported some random amount of mail in my larger mailboxes. I didn't try to figure out what it missed.
    2. Drag mail folder from Entourage to Finder
You can just drag a mail folder from Entourage to the finder and it creates a .mbox file. Then you can use Mail.app File->Import to import the .mbox file. Unfortunately, when I tried this for my 2G Entourage inbox (with ~40K messages), the Finder crashed. Still, the .mbox file was created successfully, and I was able to import this into Mail.app.
    3. Try (again) to import directly from Entourage
After importing the largest entourage mail folders using the drag-to-mbox method above, I thought I'd try importing the smaller folders directly. This succeeded, or so I thought. I checked the message counts in all my folders and all the folders had the same number of messages in both Entourage and Mail.app.
Unfortunately, when I actually went to look at the messages in Mail.app, THEY WERE ALL BLANK. No data. Nada.
So I would recommend that anyone trying the Entourage direct import actually check the messages they think they have imported. Or just use the mbox method, which is what I'm going to do now. +Update: This turns out to be incredibly tedious, as you can't select multiple folders to export at once, nor are subfolders included if you drag-drop the parent folder from Entourage. Sigh.+
I guess this is yet another regression test that Apple failed to perform (assuming they did any testing at all).

  • Dates incorrect when importing from Eudora

When importing mailboxes from Eudora, it seems that the emails I have received all have their dates correct in Mail, but all the emails that I sent have their dates set to the date the import was done. Is there any way to avoid this?
    Thanks,
    John Link

    Hi there,
Thanks for the response.  Playing with the date/time format on the camera doesn't make a difference.  Nor does changing the way the MacBook keps track of date/time information.  Tried both those things and wound up with the same result as before (ie. seemingly randomized folder dates).  In the PE organizer, the date view looks fine and everything comes out organized properly.  It's just purely the folders themselves that appear to have the problem.
It does seem as though the problem lies somewhere in the actual interaction between camera and computer (since it's really only in the Finder view that this is a problem).  At present I've just stopped asking Elements to create subfolders since the bulk of my organizational stuff is done through tags and albums applied in the organizer anyway.  So it's not a big deal.  Just odd.

  • Does Mail cope with large databases (import from Eudora)?

I have 1GB of email in Eudora in heavily nested folders. Will Mail be able to handle an import of my Eudora folders and even if it does, what performance can I expect, will Mail grind to a halt??
If anyone has done this type of import, how well did this work, did they use the Mail import tool or Eudora Mailbox Cleaner 4.9?
    Thanks
    Tony

    1GB? Pah. lightweight.
My mail directory runs some 9.1GB and Mail has never shown a sign of caring.
That's not to say the import won't take a while - I'm sure it will, but I've yet to see at what point Mail.app cares about how much mail you have.

  • Empty mailboxes after importing from panther to tiger - can't solve

    Dear all,
I have been happily using my ibook G3 300mhz for seven years now, running system nine first then jaguar then panther (currently 10.3.9).
I have nearly all my emails from 98 onwards, which I first imported from eudora to eudora (8600 to ibook) and then from eudora on ibook to mail on ibook. I have a pop account and a mac account with an alias (.mac and IMAP therefore). I probably have about 10.000 emails scattered in many folders and subfolders. Some of my mac mails are even saved in folders belonging to my pop account (thus located on my mac).
I've been waiting for the new macbook for a couple of months, had it for FOUR days now and seem unable to transfer my mail from my ibook to my macbook. I have tried both copying the whole mail folder and importing mailboxes from within mail.
With the first option when I open mail it says it needs to import my messages and is then stuck on message 659. May be a corrupt message but I have no way of knowing which one it is and delete it from the library. With the second options it imports all boxes alright, even displaying a numebr of messages whcih appears realistic, but I get the usual "You need to take this account online in order to download it" message. The only messages I can actually see are those in my inbox for my .mac account and those still on the server for my pop account. Any and all messages in any of the other mailboxes (even the .mac ones which are definitely on the server) seem to have disappeared.
I have even tried backing up from the ibook with mac backup and then restoring to the macbook (has worked for preferences, itunes playlist etc) the result is the same: boxes are there but appear empty.
I think I have read all threads concerning similar problems but don't seem to find a suitable solution. I was so looking forward to getting my new computer and being able to use mail 2 and now I've been stuck for days, with a huge waste of time. Why can't my intel core duo with tiger do what my little ibook with panther did so successfully and faithfully, albeit admittetly really slowly?
Needless to say I need to have all my messages exactly in the same mailboxes as I have them on my old comp, I certainly can't throw them into one huge box and sort them from there!
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am even willing to spend a few bucks on any conversion program that can do the job (although after just purchasing the macbook I shouldn't have to spend anything more) just to avoid this incredible waste of time.
A faithful apple user who is getting kind of frustrated
    Diana

    Hello, Diana.
I think I have read all threads concerning similar problems
Have you read this in particular?
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
You won't find the solution to your problem there, but it should let you better understand it. In particular, if using Mail on the iBook under Mac OS X 10.3.9 is still an option, you may want to try to clean up your mailboxes there first, using the following article as a guidance:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Before start troubleshooting this, you should make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case.
    Post back with your observations.

  • Artwork imported from Inkscape looks weird!

Whenever I try to do anything in Ai with the artwork I imported from Inkscape, error messages keep popping up!  And the third time I imported a file into Ai, (with text I converted to a path), I noticed that the blurred drop-shadows looked strange.  Upon closer examination I see that some letters, (shadows of letters that is), in the word appear darker!  This was not the case when the file was in Inkscape.
Other problems cropped up with the files I imported to Ai.  I imagine it's because Inkscape and Ai work differently?
Anyway, can anyone tell me how I can fix this current problem?
Thanx in advance for any help.

+Once in idvd I had to drop the quality from best to high quality in order to get the movie to fit on the disc.+
The limitation for iDVD is the length of TIME of the movie, not the size. Do you mean that you selected 'High Quality' instead of 'Best Performance' because your movie exceeded 60 minutes?
You might try burning your DVD again, but this time chose the 'Professional Quality' option.

  • How can I import mailboxes from Eudora to my new POP Mail account?

    Good afternoon!
I have 10.4.11 on my Mac Mini and want to transfer my mail service from Eudora to Mail. I opened a POP account, but when I tried to import mailboxes from the Eudora Folder stored in Documents I got an Error message: No valid Eudora files were found.
I know the mailbox folder is in the Eudora Folder in Documents, so why can't Mail find it?

I'm not sure if you need Eudora Mailbox Cleaner, but you might take a look at it.

  • Mailboxes imported from Thunderbird have missing messages

Relatively new to Mac -- not a month, yet. After discovering that Mail has two of the features I've long wanted in Thunderbird -- signatures and selective quoting -- I decided to make Mail my email client. I am able to send and receive mail, however, all but a few of my mailboxes imported from Thunderbird are missing significant numbers of messages. This is surprising because I thought both Mail and Thunderbird used the mbox format. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have to say I'm more than a little disappointed in the technical support I got on this. The first individual I spoke to had no solution. He said he'd research the issue, and possibly consult with a Mail specialist. Five minutes later I got a call back and was told Apple doesn't support Thunderbird.
When I explained that I was asking for support with Mail, and that Mail explicitly provides for importing from Thunderbird, all I got was, "Sorry, we can't help you." Not what I expected form Apple.

I got help solving this problem from a little application that cleans up Eudora and Thunderbird mailboxes and the automatically imports them into Mail.
Very nifty application. You just drag your mailboxes -- your complete mailbox folder if you want -- on to the application's icon and it takes it from there. That is literally all there is to it.

  • Mac Mail crashed when importing Mailboxes from Eudora

Using Tiger (10.4.11) and Mac Mail 2.1.3. It always crashes when I try to import a Mailbox from Eudora. Any ideas?

Have you done any Disk or OS Maintenance lately?
How much free space do you have on the HD?
Does it always crash in the same place/time?

  • Import Mail from Eudora on Windows

Currently I use Gmail as my main email account, so I have never used Apple Mail. I am fully switching to the Mac (finally) after having had an iBook and now a Macbook for 3.5 years.
I set up my original AOL account as an IMAP account, and that works just fine, there is no saved mail to import, and a few messages were on the server in the "old mail" folder.
The problem comes when I need to import the mail from an old Comcast account on what used to be my main Windows computer. It was in Eudora for Windows, as at the time I set up the account, it was in the pre-Thunderbird days, and I didn't want a Microsoft email client.
I imported the .mbx files into Apple Mail, and for the most part they imported correctly. One major problem, however, is with jokes that my grandfather sends me. I have him send them to the old account so that they don't clog up my Gmail inbox. The problem is, they imported without any of the forwarded part, and that is the important part of the message.
Can I get Mail to properly import the messages or should I try working with Thunderbird? I don't care too much about this account, but I do want to keep the old mail. No matter what I do, I am going to keep the old .mbx files so that worst case scenario, if I found a message that was improperly imported, I could install Eudora on a Windows box and access the .mbx files.
I just forwarded a many times forwarded joke from my Gmail account to the Comcast address, and Mail deals with it just fine, so its only the imported old Mail.

is the Eudora format the same on windos as it is on the mac?
No, they are different - among the easy things they use different EOL characters and different character encoding but also the (binary) TOC is different. I am pretty sure that TB on Mac does not do too well with Windows Eudora...

Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
