Import From Excel to Address Book?

I have several large lists in an Excel file that I would like to import into address book easily. Can this be done? If so, please provide some direction.

Save the files as tab delimited or CSV files and import using the address book import command
from Address Book help
Home Index
Importing contacts
Address Book can import contact information that you save or export from other applications in vCard, LDIF, tab-delimited, and comma-separated (CSV) formats.
You can export addresses in LDIF format from Netscape, and vCards from Palm Desktop, Entourage, Outlook, and others. You can export text files in tab-delimited or CSV format from most databases.
To import addresses from other applications:
Export addresses from the other application in vCard, LDIF, tab-delimited, or comma-separated (CSV) format.

When exporting tab-delimited or CSV files, you may want to note the order of the information fields. If the file doesn’t contain labels, you can refer to your notes to manually identify the fields in a later step.

When exporting from Palm Desktop, use the default column layout.

Verify that exported .txt or CSV files don’t contain line breaks, which can cause the import to fail. >Use a text editing application such as TextEdit to find and remove the line breaks.
In Address Book, choose File > Import, and then choose the format of the exported file. Choose “Text File” for a tab-delimited or CSV file.
Select the file that contains the exported addresses and click Open.
If you are importing a text file, use the pop-up menus in the Text File Import dialog to specify how to import the data.

If the first record contains labels instead of contact information, select the “Ignore first card” checkbox.

Use the left and right arrows to see different records in the file you’re importing, to help you determine how to set the pop-up menus.

If you don’t want to import a field, set the pop-up menu to “Do not import.”

To set the pop-up menus for address fields, choose the type of address (home, work, or other) in the pop-up menu next to the first item of the address. Then use the address pop-up menus that appear to choose the corresponding data for each address field.
If the application you’re exporting contacts from supports it, export vCards that include multiple contacts to speed up importing.
To see the most recently imported contacts, click Last Import in the Group column. This list is updated each time you import contacts. Use the View menu to show or hide the Last Import item in the Group column.
You can use iSync to import contacts from your Palm device. For more information, open iSync, choose Help > iSync Help, and then search for “palm.”

  • Importing a group of names and email addresses from EXCEL to address book

I want to create a new group in my address book, so I can send one email to multiple addresses. I have an EXCEL document that contains the names and email addresses. Is there an easy way to import them into my address book from EXCEL?
    Thanks, Teri

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to import 300 addresses from an Excel file into Address Book. The Excel file has been converted to tab-delimited (txt). I've gone through and deleted any extra line breaks within fields, commas, etc in the addresses.
When I go to Address Book and ask it to import the Text file, I get the dialog window showing me the fields it will import, but when I click on "OK", the program just freezes. Also, it tells me in the dialog window that it won't import specific fields like Street 2, City, State or Zip and there is information in all of those fields for every record to import.
I've been working on this for three weeks now and am at my wits end. I have never had a database program be so difficult to work with.
    Any ideas?

  • Importing From Filemaker to Address Book to iPod errors - Help Please

I can export from Filemaker into Address book without any "obvious" problem.
When I synch the iPod, or swap iSynch.vcf file, the records show up but the first/main screen only shows the First Last Name but the rest of the fields are way down below, causing you to have to scroll 5 times to see it.
If I type in info into the address book it works fine. There is one single record that show up correctly, but that record is no different in the tab-delimited file (text tab text return)
I have tried exporting with various formats and methods, excel, vCard Creator, etc. I am importing "data" not name address phone, per se, a cd collection. However, it is not two words in a single field, nor a field that can't take text or numbers. What type of delimiter problems are there in the iPod contacts? Would one records field that overflows it's space and expands cause all the other to "expand" or Push out as well. Are Thanks

It's not so difficult. Export files in text (tab or comma). In the next field choose ASCII (DOS) in stead of MacIntosh. If you do so, it shouldn't be any problem with importing in Adressbook. Succes.

  • Import .txt (from Excel) into Address book not happening

I am attempting to import a .txt file (exported from an Excel file) containing 5000 contacts with email and phone details. In the Import dialogue I can map the columns to the Address Book properties. When I press OK the button stays blue (highlighted) for a few seconds but no import occurs. Not even the card being previewed.
What am I missing here? (Bit urgent too)

I had the same problem. I saved as tab-delimited in excel, closed it but upon import, address book would hang (spinning wheel or no response). So, I reopened the .txt file in Numbers instead, got rid of any strange lines, saved again as .txt. Then, I imported it into Address book and it was fine.
To see whether it had to do with Numbers or Excel, I reopened the .txt file in Excel also, did the editing out of strange lines/cells again, and imported into address book again without problems.
Seems like a really dumb hack, but it worked for me. I had 62 entries (address book always stalled at 5).

  • How do i import contacts from iPhone to address book?

how do i import contacts from iphone to address book?

Ok, I knew it was a long shot.  The merge prompt normally is only available when you first sync your device.  I'm not sure how things got out of sync in the first place, but you may have to manually delete the contacts from your phone that you don't want there at this point.  I would try adding a new contact on your phone followed by sync to confirm that it's picking up new contacts though.
Unfortunately I need to go now, so if you're still having problems I suggest your start a new post in the forum to see if someone else can help.  Good luck!

  • How do I import addresses from Word into Address Book?

I have all my addresses formatted as a label document in Word (so I can print on Avery labels). How can I import this information into Address Book?

You will need to convert the file so it appears something like this:
    LastName<tab>FirstName<tab>Address<tab>City<tab>State<tab>Zip
    Aalberg<tab>The<tab>3451 Avon Way<tab>Burbank<tab>CA<tab>91564
    Jones<tab>Sam<tab>11112 First Ave. NW<tab>Atlanta<tab>GA<tab>30022
The above is the general format required. The typical way of doing address labels in Word is to create a mailmerge database that would be formatted like the above. Then you create a mailmerge document in which the fieldnames on the top line of the database are inserted in the desired format. You then create the output file by doing a mailmerge. Apparently you are doing it the brute-force way.
I hope this makes it clearer for you.

  • Mac mail import from excel email list

Using leopard on new imac. Could someone please give me some advice for importing to mac mail. I purchased 2000 email leads which was emailed to me in excel format. I can open in numbers fine and looks great. My problem is I need to import these leads to mac mailß, with email, name, address, phone, etc. and haven't found a way to do this. Can anyone help. Thanks in advance. Gary

Try importing them into the address book, this is where mail gets it's email addresses from. There is an option to import a text file. Just back up the address book before you import them since this could create a problem since it's dependent on file headers. i've never tried this before so I'm going out on a whim but the help files in the address book says that it supports importing of csv and tab deliminated files. I would not use the text file if it's been saved from numbers. Use the exact file that was sent to you by the company you purchased the contacts from. Good luck!

  • Problems syncing from contacts to address book

I have an iMac which now runs OSX 10.6.8 and an iPhone 3GS that runs the latest iOS 5.
Long story short, I downgraded from OSX Lion back to OSX 10.6.8 a few months ago.  Got quite a few problems doing so...  ended up creating a brand new user and transferring music, videos and photos manually.  Then, the iOS 5 got out and I upgraded my phone right away.  I couldn't figure out icloud at first but understood yesterday that it works only with Lion.  I thought I'd keep it on my phone if I ever want to install Lion again.
I also realised that I never transfered back in my iMac all my iCal events and Contacts.
So yesterday, I tryied to sync my Contacts, iCal and Notes from my iPhone to my iMac.  In the iTune info tab, under each section, there was a message mentioning that since I use iCloud, I don't need to sync my info through iTune and doing so would possibly create duplicates.  I try to sync them anyway since I only had to in Address Book.  I got the message to merge or replace.  I selected merge (yes I had at least one contact in Address Book).  Nothing happened...  iCal didn't merge anything and neither Address Book.  I tried to create new events in my phone and iMac and these were syncing but not the original ones.  Also added a contact in Address Book and it got sync with my phone.  I didn't try creating one on the phone to sync it through but assumed that it was working.
After going through a few discussion threads, I decided to delete the iCloud account on my phone since I didn't need it and try re-syncing.  The iCloud message in the iTune's info tab was gone so I thought everything would be good and I could select merge my contact again without any problem.  I was wrong...  I lost all my contacts...  I freeeeeeeeaked out !!  Thank God I didn't unplug the phone and restored it right away to get everything back.
I tried it again this afternoon but only tried to sync iCal.  I didn't get to choose between merge and replace and the same thing happened again...  lost everything...  iCal but also Contacts which I find strange because I didn't check the Contact option in iTune....   I got everything restored back even thought it's always scary to try things like this....  So for now on, I don't delete my iCloud info on my Phone and do not sync any other info.  I'm actually scared to plug it in and always double check that my contacts are all there before unplugging.
So here I am...  don't really know what to do...  I read stuff about removing apple.isync files or something...  or other options but they never quite answer my problem...
There is still the option to type all my contacts back in Address Book..  I don't have that many... but it's a pain...
Sorry about the long message here
Thanks for your help and for your time.
    Ben

Clearly iSync has got confused about what new data it needs to pull from the phone. Usually resetting the sync history solves this, but as it hasn't for you... try this:
I would suggest sending all the contacts from the phone to the Mac manually via Bluetooth: *Contacts > Options > More > Advanced > Send all Contacts > Via Bluetooth* (or similar, depending on the exact phone model)
This will send vCard(s) which can be imported into the Mac Address Book simply by double-clicking the file that arrives on your Mac.
Merge or remove any duplicates as they are imported. You can also use the *Card > Look for Duplicates* command in Address Book.
Once all your Contacts are exactly as you want them in Address Book do a full backup of them:
*File > Export > Address Book archive...*
Finally, load iSync, click your phones icon and choose *Reset Device...* from the Devices menu.
This will force iSync to remove all the existing contacts from the phone and completely replace them with all the new nicely sorted out ones from the Mac Address Book.
From this point on, iSync should keep track of what needs updating on each subsequent sync.

  • Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this

Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this?

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Importing Windows Outlook Express address book

    Hello
I have been trying to import an Outlook Express address book (which is stored on a DVD) to MS Entourage with not much luck
I can't seem to find an 'option' to import an external address book.
The only options available seem to be to import Entourage docs/archives etc.
    Can anyone help?

I've been looking into this myself and there are a number of possibilities. You can't just import an address book but importing all your contacts can be done. Search discussions here for the topic (the Mail and Address Book forum has stuff on getting contacts out of Outlook) and also Google the web, there are several threads elsewhere. There are even shareware utilities to help.
Also look under Mac 101: Shifting From PC in the Support section here. Apple has a little bit to say on it, although not terribly helpful to me.

  • Lion Server: How do I import into the central address book?

    Hello
I could successfully import addresses into the local address book of my Mac Mini (using the import function of the address book application).
However, I want the addresses to be in the central, shared address book of the Lion Server. I can't find a way to import there.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks! Martin

Never mind, I figured it out: Open the local addresses, select all, drag/drop to the desktop. Then open the server address book and drag/drop from the desktop.

  • Exporting from Entourage to Address Book and iCal

    Dear All,
I have a corrupt Entourage database which is making syncing to my iPhone through the Apple apps impossible. as such and with a huge leap of faith to mobileme I'm ditching Entourage.
Anybody got any easy ways to export the contacts from Entourage to Address Book?
On iCal I tried the import from Entourage feature but three weeks later (I kid not) it still hadn't completed so I'm giving up on calendar and that is probably a result of the corrupt database.
Anyway, any help would be hugely appreciated!
    Cheers and happy new year,
    Paul.

Like iCal Mail will import from Entourage. Just select that option from
Mail's File menu, then click on the Entourage import option.

Can someone tell me what file I need to copy and where to restore all my addresses from my old address book. I elected not to migrate everything to avoid problems, but that is one important and long list.

Look in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ for the files containing your data, where ~ is the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon.

  • Can I upload one contact from my iMac address book to my iphone from iCloud?

Can I upload one(1) contact from my iMac address book using icloud to my iphone without having to upload the whole address book??

No, it would upload (sync) your entire address book.  If you want to get a single contact to your phone from Address Book you can select it, then go to File>Export>Export vCard and save it to your desktop.  Then email the saved vCard (.vcf file) to yourself, open the email on your phone and tap the attachment to import the contact to your phone.
