Import from FCP; silent clips

On a weekly basis I'm taking clips from FCP, selecting the sequence in the browser, and exporting for a multitrack STP project. I open it up in Soundtrack, wait 10 minutes while it does its thing, crossing my fingers it works this time as STP tends to crash one in three times at this point. Assuming it works I do get in I always seem to have a few clips that are properly placed in the multitrack timeline, but when I play they do not have any audio. This is really odd as Soundtrack properly draws their waveform. Since the waveform is present the clip is obviously connected. The meters for that track don't move, with the volume from -infinity to +6 the result is the same. I'm using the stereo panner set to center and the subgroup assignment to none.
I've found two "fixes" for this - which are more workarounds than fixes. The first one is I can drop it onto another track and it works just fine, but if I move it back to the track it was on it won't work. The other one is sometimes a control-click, then Channel Select -> Mono -> 1 or 2 instead of Stereo -> 1&2 sometimes makes it work but not always.
I hate moving the clips to a new layer as there doesn't seem to be a good way to move them to a new layer without them shifting time at all. Is this a noted error, or is there a good fix for this problem?
Thanks for your time hand help!
Jeff

Are you still having this issue? I have the same thing; certain clips are "there" but just won't play. Did you investigate your sample rate? I have certain music clips that were not resampled and are at 44.1 in a 48 sequence. they play fine, export, compress etc. and all of them export to STP multitrack, except for one piece which will not play.

  • Aspect Ratio wrong in sequence imported from FCP

I'm a reasonably experienced user of Final Cut who intends now to migrate to Premiere (leaving the sinking ship?) So, at present, I'm trying to import current projects from FCP into Premiere using XML.
The result for a large scale and pretty advanced project was disasterous losses, so I've decided to start with a much smaller project, which contains a single sequence in the same format as the media, 20 or so HDV 1080p25 clips, and a handful of wav sound files. The result is better, but there are two problems I've encountered:
    1. When I open the sequence in the timeline the aspect ratio, which should be 16:9 is squashed in to something more like 4:3. Opening a clip from the bin in the source monitor does not have this effect, but I can't work out how to rectify the change of aspect ratio when the sequence is playing in the program monitor. - Any tips?
    2. The audio file icons in the project imported into Premiere are unlinked. When I try reconnecting them, Premiere says it can't because of a 'header error'. - Any clues to what this means and why it should be?
    Thanks.

    Hello Jim Simon,
Yes, I've tried importing one of these wav files into a new project, but it Premiere won't allow me to. It comes up with a message saying:
"The file cannot be opened because of a header error".
    Any ideas?
PS. As this was a side issue to my main query, and the title of this thread doesn't refer to it and hence might make it hard for others to find, I've added a new query to cover this under the title: "Header Error when importing Wav files"

  • Video does not play when imported from FCP

When I import a clip from FCP into motion the clip opens up however only one frame shows up in the motion viewer. When I press play, there is no video..only that particular frame that was showing.
The media tab shows the .mov file, and plays it in seperate window when i double click on it.
    Thanks for helping me out.

How do you bring the file into Motion and what file are you actually opening in Motion?
Are you exporting your FCP project as QT? or
Are you sending your FCP project to Motion?

  • Cs5 is asking me to find all media associated with a project file imported from FCP BY HAND.

Please tell me there is a way around this.
I have an XML file that was exported from FCP and I'm importing it  into CS5. I have the drive with all of the media on it. I load up the XML and CS5 is asking me to find every single piece of media involved with the project by hand on the drive. THis is insane and will take me hours. Why will it not locate it itself? Please someone tell me there's a way to let it search throught he folders on its own.

Repeating some of what has been stated here....
What PPro is looking for is the assets in the same directory structure as when the XML file was created from FCP. So let's say that as you were about to save the XML file from FCP, you had all the assets on 1 single drive. Some were in Folder A, some where in Folder B, some in Folder A-1 (a subfolder of A) and some in Folder B-1 (subfolder of B). As long as the files remained in roughly that same folder structure in relation to one another, PPro should be able to find all the other assets AFTER you've found the first one.
With all the translation if you go from a Mac to a PC system, there's a lot of chance there that the directory structure - even if you kept it basically all intact - could still be messed up. Once the XML is loaded into PPro, however, you should be able to select multiple offline clips in the project folder, choose "Link Media" and have PPro go through and (hopefully) find everything automagically. If not, the Finder button in the "Link Media" dialog box should help.
PPro doesn't really care specifically about folders and subfolders when relinking, it is just looking for the RELATIONAL structure based on the last time the assets were ONLINE in the project. So even if your original assets were in 1,400 different folders, it shouldn't require you to relink based on each individual folder, so long as the RELATIONSHIP between all the files and folders remained the same.
Hopefully that makes sense. I know when I work with FCP editors the footage is generally handed to me on a drive with all the assets being essentially in a very different relationship than when they were on their FCP projects (since they usually are going from multiple drives on their Mac to the single drive that they hand me with the project assets). So I'm usually required to manually relink all the assets anyway. Kind of a bummer, but thankfully most projects are limited to only about 100 assets or so, and filenames are generally unique.
    Good luck!

  • Import from FCP Cutting Off Audio

I've just had a few hours added to an interview I've been editing thanks to either a setting I don't know about or an import bug between FCP and Soundtrack. I'll try to explain.
I have 4 video tracks and their accompanying audio tracks. After editing the footage (which include several "J" and "L" cuts, if that matters), I sent the file to Soundtrack as a multitrack project. Upon beginning to work on the audio, I quickly discovered that the import had cut off some of the clips. Not all, but some. The edit sounds fine in FCP, but then the clip is cutoff mid-word in Soundtrack. For example, in FCP a clip ended on the word "purpose". In Soundtrack, the same clip ended at "pur-".
I could think of nothing else to do but take the affected clips one at a time, and by trial and error, extend the audio clips in FCP 5-10 frames past where they were supposed to go. A couple hours later....somehow--even though it sounded wrong now in FCP--it sounded correct in Soundtrack. Then I made my audio adjustments, added a background track, and took it back into FCP.
This has really confounded me. Is there some kind of export bug? A setting? What?

well you might be in the wild west just a little. I haven't tried editing anything from an iPhone. My guess is that the video isn't frame based, but that it's probably a long GOP codec. I do everything in one of the flavors of Prores. You might want to try that and see if it clears up the issue. Download a copy of Mpeg Stream clip and convert your files to ProRes and then bring them into Final Cut. Then you'll be using proper frame based footage.
Note that you can get a cable for your iPhone that, when plugged into the audio socket, gives you both audio in and monitoring out. I have one, and I use it for a Sony wireless mic set. Then your audio is automatically wedded and you can skip the hassles of double system sound. You could even take the monitor out of the H4 and run it into the camera so you have an automatic backup. Oh, and check the frequency of the sound on the iPhone footage. It might not be 48k.
Take a look at Pluraleyes, for syncing double system sound. It does a very nice job

  • Subclip import from fcp studio

is it possible to import subclips from FCP 7 projects into FCPX?

reading further in the 7toX instructions, contrary to your comment, they say
Translating a Final Cut Pro Project
To translate a full Final Cut Pro project:
    Make sure there is nothing selected in the Browser;
Choose the File menu and from the Export submenu select XML…
When imported into Final Cut Pro X after translation, the bins will be translated to keyword collections, based on the bin name. Log notes and other metadata will be in the Notes field for each clip.

  • Poor Quality When Imported From FCP

Hello I have been having issues when importing a QT files into After Effects. When exported from FCP and imported into After Effects the footage loses significant quality, maybe a little interlaced. Ive checked and double checked fields, Im exporting in animation. Ive done both QT movie and QT conversion with the same result. Also it happens with files exported from FCP from other computers. Ive checked export settings & coposition settings. Any Ideas?

Thanks. That is what makes the most sense to me. How do I elect how After Effects interprets the footage? I went to preferences but couldn't find anything that fixed the problem there.
See the help system for Interpret Footage.
It's a right-click dropdown form the project pane. Select a footage item, Interpret Footage.

  • Problems with XML import from FCP 7 to Premiere Pro CS6

    Afternoon everyone.
I'm currently trying to import an FCP 7 project file that I want to now edit and tweak in Premiere Pro (have recently realised i've been using Premiere far more so would like to start making a full switch over).
I've gathered my original FCP project and exported via XML (Apple Interchange Format, Version 5) and imported it into a blank Premiere Pro project. However it gets to the import window, progresses fully to 100% and then throws this error message at me, and I can't seem to figure out why.
I've tried exporting an XML for the whole project, with all bins/sequences/clips etc. I've also tried individual sequences/bins, and none of them want to import.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    Adam

Okay, after trying both steps in the document above, the missing codecs/preview presets still aren't available when I go to File>New>Sequence. I guess that's the only way to check if they have installed correctly/activated correctly right? It says it's correctly activated though so not sure why it's doing this.
Are these presets also missing in the trial verison of the software?

  • Image distorted after import from FCP

I've been working on this project for some time now, and it's really frustrating.
I'm editing together footage from two cameras (A Canon XL1 and a Panasonic AG-DVC 7P) in Final Cut and then exporting that as a quicktime movie, bringing that into Motion to add titles and logos. When it's exported, burned to DVD and played on a TV, some shots look really terrible.
It's as if there are lines of distortion (like it's shaky, leaving traces of the image) on many of the quick shots, especially when it's a quick pan or tilt. It looks alright on the computer screen but turns to dookie on a TV.
Is there some problem with the scanning, interlaced or progressive setting? I could use a hand if anyone has seen this kind of problem before.
    Thanks a bunch,
    Matt

When doing the titles and logos are you doing them in motion and then importing them into FCP or did u bring the whole thing into motion at the end.
Also could be a problem with your burner.

  • How to break down single file imported from quicktime into clips?

Can anyone help? I am trying to import video footage from a sony handycam, and have managed to import using USB via DvDxDV and then quicktime. However, it imports the movie as one big clip, is there anyway to instruct iMovie to break the clips down? Thanks

is there anyway to instruct iMovie to break the clips down?
You have to do that manually by Command-T or by "Split Clip at Playhead" -menu command.

  • Import from MiniDV, first clip has todays date

I'm going through old MiniDV tapes and importing them to iMovie 11 on Snow Leopard. I'm importing using both automatic and manual but the effect is the same on both.
The tapes are mostly from 2001-2006 but the first days clips of each import always go into the event library under the current year (2011) not the year it was shot. All subsequent days filming is named after the event with an appended "- Day X" in the correct year. Right clicking the clip and "adjusting the date" has no effect, the correct date (2001-2006) is shown, and adjusting it again doesn't move the clip in event library, it stays in 2011.
I've seen others reporting the same or similar but I've not found a solution for this for mini dv tape imports yet.
    Any tipsor pointers appreciated

    I quote QuickTimeKirk:
”Open the Audio MIDI Setup application (Utilities
    folder).
Try changing the settings to 44100Hz (CD Quality) or
to 48000Hz (typical of the iMovie formats).
Others call this the GarageBand fix. Opening GB also

I've changed the microphone and the line-in settings to 48000 Hz but the problem still remains.
    What else could it be?

  • Blu-ray authoring in Encore - importing from FCP

I do all my post in FCP and I am shooting HDV 1080i and then want to burn Blu-ray using Encore. I tried creating a quicktime reference file and then importing it to Encore - the SD DVDs look okay (with jagged edges at times - interlaced video problems I guess) and play back fine. However, the Blu-ray wont play back (it burns fine) on the Sony BDP-S300. Any suggestions as to what might be going wrong?...My video length was 60 mins and Encoe showed the size as 8GB (which seemed a bit low for 60 mins of BD). Let me know if you have any suggestions on troubleshooting. I used the automatic settings for transcoding for now (I will customize the transcode settings once I know I get the BD to work)

Does your Sony player have the latest firmware updates?
Try encoding the video as Mpeg-2 in Compressor for a BluRay file, then import into Encore. It should say "Don't Transcode" under the BluRay transcode settings if you got it right. Letting Encore do all the encoding is a bad idea for both of those options. Even for DVD I would use compressor, Sorenson, BitVice, or similar encoding software...but since Compressor is free with FCP....
Burn the disc, or burn a bluray ISO then use another program to burn the ISO to your bluray disc.
I would suggest investing in 1 or 2 BD-REs to make this part less expensive.

  • Whats the best way to import video clips from FCP into a personal template

Hey all, I'm doing some tests. I see some color shifting going on when I export out of FCP using QT conversion (same settings as sequence), Importing into Motion, then adding lower third graphics, then exporting out of Motion .... and finally back to FCP. I put the new graphic added layer on top and have the original on bottom. I toggle the monitor on both layers and see a slight saturation drop on the graphic layer. Has anyone noticed that ?
The reason Im doing this is because lets say I have lower thirds that I want to place throughout a hour show. I want to set-up a basic lower third template and just plug in the video clips for the areas that I need those graphics. It would be way to difficult to export out of the timeline in FCP
and rebuild those lower thirds everytime in Motion. Does anyone know of a better way or does everyone have to export out to the desktop and then into Motion every time they want to use a Motion template.
    Thanks to any replies.

Try roundtripping from FCP to Motion and back using Send to Motion. In FCP, Control Click your clip>Send To>Motion Project. The clip will open in Motion with the proper project properties. Make your edits there, press Save, and then render back in FCP. No exporting necessary, although you might see a gamma shift. Much easier.
To do this with an existing Motion template, I'd try copying and pasting in that template's contents once you've sent to Motion from FCP.
