Import from folders: recursing fails

I have just switched from Adobe Lightroom, due to a massive failure on Adobe's part to handle my upgrade to LR3 well. I have been considering trying out Aperture in any case, and this was the final straw.
So, I need to move all my photos to Aperture. I decided for an open directory hierarchy rather than a managed library, so that I can easily back up and examine my backups. I am not trying to maintain my old structure, but create a new, slightly different one, based on my past experiences.
- I have in my home account:
Pictures/OldPhotos/Contax_645Film/2009/06/01/*.tif and so on, many years, months and days, several cameras.
- I want in my home account:
Pictures/Photos/2009/06/*.tif etc.
I tried the following:
- Open Aperture
- Import/Folders and Projects... (CmdShiftI)
- Import Folders as: Folders and Projects
- Store Files: Pictures (folder in my home account)
- Copy Files (while testing, eventually move)
- Ignore Duplicates: Off (my library is empty)
- Subfolders: Image Year/Month
- Folder text: (blank)
- Version Name: CWYYYYMMDD_CAMERACOUNT (COUNT = Aperture counter)
- CW_(Image Year)(Image Month)(Image Date)_(Custom Name)_(Counter)
Custom Name = Contax645_Film, Counter = 0 (auto-increment)
- Apply to Master Filename: On
- RAW Files Only (there are no JPGs in this camera's folder)
As far as I understand, this means that Aperture will import the photos in the folder I choose, dump them in the Pictures/Photos folder by year and month, and name them as indicated. It doesn't work, however. I see no photos in the import dialog.
Then I tried something very similar, this time with normal import:
- Open Aperture
- Import (Cmd+I)
- Destination: 2009 (I created Contax 645 Film/2009 folders in Aperture)
- Project Name: C645_200906 (I guess I can change this later if needed)
- Automatically Split Project: Off
- Do not Import Duplicates: Off
- Store Files: Pictures (from my user account; Pictures/Photos is autocreated)
- Copy Files
- Subfolder: Image Year/Month
- Add Rename Files section:
- Version Name: CWYYYYMMDD_CAMERACOUNT (same preset as above)
- Name Text: Contax645_Film (for Custom Name)
- Rename Master File (so filename matches version name)
The elaborate project name lets me click LIBRARY/Projects and see something useful.
This works if I choose a folder like Pictures/OldPhotos/Contax_645Film/2009/06/01/, but not if I choose Pictures/OldPhotos/Contax_645Film/2009/06, i.e. it fails to recurse. All I have seen indicates that Aperture should recurse into folders while importing, but it doesn't, meaning I have to import again and again, for each day. Argh.
I have logged a bug with Apple, but thought I would ask here in case anyone knows what I might be doing wrong, or how I can work around it.

Found what i needed Import - Images does the same job.

  • Import from camera always fails for a number of images

Since recently (maybe update to Aperture 3.2  or Lion 10.7.2 or so), I have serious trouble when I import potos from my camera (it s a Canon 7D, but I got the very same issue when importing from my iPhone). Aperture (reproducible, always!) imports a number of photos correctly, then stops and displays the message "Import items Completed with Errors". If I them try to import again, it (as it should) only shows me the ones I have not imported succesfully so far, I click "Import" and the same thing happens: a few are imported successfully, a number fails. I have to repeat that a number of times, until it really imported all images from the camera.
I have tried using a different USB-cable (but as mentioned, it anyway also occurs with the iPhone, which uses a totally different cable); I tried repeairing permissions; I have checked and repaired the Aperture database; nothing worked so far!
The camera uses a CF-card, so I cannot import the photos via the SD card-reader...
This issue is really annoying; and unfortunatelly, it seems not to be very common, at least googeling did not reveal too many similar cases and none suggested a solution that would work for me so far :-(
    Any advice is highly welcome!
    Best,
    Marco
PS: Image format is CR2 from the Canon and JPG from the iPhone...

Looks strange. Since at the end you can import all your files it seems not to be a wrong setting in Aperture (like do not import duplicates or something like). It should also not be tha cable or the sources since it happerns with both Canon and iPbhone.
To investigate I would suggest following steps to collect more info.
Have you tried to import to iPhoto instead than to Aperture ?
Where do you store the imported pictures ? Aperture should not allow to leave them on the source if you connect the camera to USB. I see you have both HD and SSD: try to change the location to store the pictures...
Try to load from card with a CF reader or to change the camera (in a good Photo Handler they could help you with the necessary hardware).
Could it be a energy saving setting on the MAC: after a while it stops loading from USB.
Sorry if I do not have better suggestions ....

When I try to import CD tracks using an external USB CD/DVD drive, it fails if I have error correction turned on.

As it says in the flyer that comes with the program, you do not capture video from a DVD. You rip it from disc.
Place the finalized DVD in your computer's DVD player and then use Premiere Elements' Get Media/From DVD Camcorder or DVD Drive to open the Video Importer. Locate the DVD drive and rip the files to your computer and into your project. (Of course you'll need to ensure your project is set up for Hard Disk Camcorder/720x480 before you begin or you'll have problems with your project later.)
I detail, step by step, how to do all this in my books, if you're interested.

  • Importing from iphoto, always get "import failed".

I am trying to move my pictures from iphoto to elements.
I "import from files and folders" and choose import from iphoto.
    I have 87,0000 pictures.
    It fails saying "import failed".
I check the disk, and the files are there but no pictures in the catalog.
I try to remove the files that it says are damaged.  I have done that.  I still get "import failed" with no report of why.
I see many other posts with this same issue, and no good solution.
I tried to create a new catalog, no difference.

    Elements 12.0
I have had Elements for the mac for 3 months now and still can't use it!

I did the "from iPhoto" and got the problem listed above.  I want the whole library transferred.
I am looking for a solution to the elements defect listed above.  If I import the library, and it has a problem with a single photo, it should not import that photo, but do the rest.  It is not doing that, it is failing and not importing anything.
This is especially frustrating since it take hours to import the library, then when it is 95% done, it fails and imports nothing.

I am new to PSE 12 and am trying to import my photos from folders on my desktop which I have organized by the categories I had in my previous program (Creative Memories).  Many of my photos are located in multiple folders, i.e. one photo could be in "Family," Vacations" and "Birthdays."  When I try to import the contents of each folder on my desktop I am often getting the message that many of my photos were not imported as they are already in my catalog.  Is there a way that I can import any one photo multiple times so that it ends up in all the folders I want it to be in?  I know I can locate the photo in PSE and copy it to a different folder(s), but there are so many not being imported that this would be a huge task!

By design, the organizer (and any other database management systems) is there to prevent you from duplicating your media files. The catalog management allows you to have the same image in different categories or albums. Duplication in different folders is to be absolutely avoided.
The same image file can have multiple tags like 'family', 'vacations', 'birthdays' and be present in three different albums with the same names. On obvious advantage is less disk space. Another one with your present folder system is that if you edit one of your duplicates, the other ones are unchanged.
I don't see an easy way to make your present folder structure simplified for the organizer ...

  • Import from iphoto fails every time.

Import from iphoto fails every time.

It should not be a serious flaw, since this something that you only do ONCE. You don't want to use both organizer and iphoto. You'll have two sets of photos with no knowledge of each other. Import from iphoto is not meant to be a regular use item, only for the one time after you've decided organizer is what you prefer. It's fine to make a small test catalog while you decide whether iphoto or organizer suits you better, but to keep on using both is going to make you crazy in short order.

I just had the same problem, I've updated to 10.6.8 yesterday, and since then the browsing are very slow, no matter what broswer I am using, the upload download speed are still the same. But browsing just take forever, It takes for example google.com 30 seconds to load. I have Extream high speed internet connection, 3 other computers, and the only one is having this problem is the Mac after the update.
Something in this update screwed my browsing capabitilties, I tried downloading Crome browser, same issue.
I hope there is a way beside TimeMachine to revert the latest update. I don't want to reformat as I am sure as soon as I am going to do the update it will cause the same problem.

  • How do I import all folders and saved messages from another email address?

I'm using Mac OS X. Only my inbox messages have imported. I'm trying to import from my GoDaddy email account.

''re : Only my inbox messages have imported.''
This sounds like you have created a POP mail account.
Pop mail accounts can only get access and download from server Inbox to Thunderbrd mail account Inbox. This is not a Thunderbird quirk; it is how all POP mail accounts work.
    There is a workaround.
    In Thunderbird
    * Move all good emails from Inbox to other suitable folders.
    * Delete any emails you do not want.
    * Right click on Inbox and select : 'Compact'
Now you have an empty Inbox which will make it easier to identify emails downloaded from different folders.
    * Log on to webmail account using a browser.
    * Move all emails from one of your folders into Inbox.
    * In Thunderbird select to 'Get Messages'
    * Thunderbird will download any emails not previously downloaded to the Inbox.
    * Create a suitable folder and move all those emails into it.
Repeat this action to move emails in other folders into webmail Inbox and then download them.
This will get emails from server folders into Thunderbird.
From then onwards any new mail coming into server Inbox will get downloaded to Thunderbird mail account Inbox, so this workaround would only need to be done once.
    '''Note:'''
Pop mail accounts usually download and delete off server, so if you do not want this to occur, check this first:
Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    OR
right click on mail account in Flder Pane and select 'Settings'
then 'Server Settings' for mail account.
    * Select 'Leave messages on server'
If you want to auto delete some emails, you can select either ot both of these options:
    * For at most xx days
    * Until I delete them
    * Click on 'OK'
If a POP mail account does not do what you want, you would need to see if your webmail account allows 'IMAP forwarding' and select that option.
Then create a new IMAP mail account in Thunderbird.
This would allow you to subscribe to see any folders on the server.
IMAP accounts mean that you get a remote view of the server folders, so anything you do in Thunderbird will also occur on the server. eg: if you delete an email in Thunderbird it will delete off server as you are seeing one in the same folders.
In both cases it is always advisable to periodically create a backup:

    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

  • Import mail folders from Snow Leopard into Lion

    Hi,
I've just switched from my MacBook Pro (MAC OS X Snow Leopard) to a new iMac (MAC OS X Lion). On both machines, I've been using Apple Mail.
Now I want to import the Mail folders from the Mail in Snow Leopard to the Mail in Lion. When using FILE > IMPORT FOLDER nothing was imported: Both settings, importing from Apple Mail and importing ".mbox" files, did end in a message saying that the folders could not be imported.
So I figured out how to access the library folder in my user account on lion and pasted all the mailboxes from Snow Leopard to LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILBOXES. After that, I deleted the "envelope" files from LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILDATA. I started Mail and it created the envelope files from scratch. Now I can see the mail folders, but they are all empty! However, when I browse to the mailbox files in the Finder (LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILBOXES), I can see that each mailbox ".mbox" folder has an "Info.plist" and a folder "Messages". Those folders are not emtpy!
How can I get my Mail in Lion to properly display the messages in the folders?
Any comments are welcome! Thanks for your support!!
    Regards,
    Matthias

Could you please explain the whole process of exporting mail from Snow to Lion. I have been trying for weeks on two diffrent computers and I can not get it to work.
I have moved the library, not sure to delete the envelopes. How do you export the  mbox-files ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
