Import from Hard Drive Not Working?

I've just upgraded to iPhoto '11 and am, so far, not happy about it. Latest issue is with importing. It works fine for the iPhone and camera, but when I download photos from Shutterfly/Facebook and try the regular ways to import (using Import function, drag and drop onto iPhoto window, drag and drop onto iPhoto icon), nada. The total number of photos in my library does not change; can't find the photos anywhere. When dragging, I do get the green plus arrow, but no number of photos, which seems problematic. And of course, the Help menu is useless. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Got the same issue since I upgraded. I use iTunes64, do you? I thought that turning on Genius was the issue but it is not. Today it got even worse... I exported the Library as I always do now because of this bug, and while Windows sees the export in the Recent Items, iTunes64 does not see the file, and looking through my drive I can no longer see it either. As if iTunes64 had not only wiped its own Library, but also crushed the one I exported!!!
Would love to know how to get rid of that one. I have five kids and manage music and iPods for the whole family!!! Need this Library badly!

  • Thunderbolt 2 external hard drive not working with Macbook Pro (early 2011)

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and I hope you guys can help me with this:
I've recently bought an external hard drive that works on Thunderbolt 2 (LaCie d2 3TB). When I connect the new drive to my Macbook Pro through the thunderbolt port, the drive isn't recognized. However, the drive works fine through a USB connection.
I thought that Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are compatible, however this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe it's because the OS X / driver / firmware version that I'm working on that is not updated? I work on an early 2011 Macbook Pro: OS X Version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
Thank you very much for your help!

  • Why is my hard drive not working?

My hard drive stopped working suddenly. I was burning a disc and it only burned 1 image and quit. I tried putting a new disc in and it tried reading it and spit it out. It was a brand new blank DVD.

Have you done any troubleshooting such as restarting the computer and if so what were the results.

  • Time Machine Restore from Networked external hard drive - not working??

recap: hard drive failure on iMac. Took it to Genius folks, they installed a new hard drive with updated Leopard OSx on it.
I came home turned it on, selected "restore from time machine" feature. It finds my external hard drive (which is connected to an airport extreme via USB 2.0) My computer is connected via ethernet to the airport extreme.
I select the imac backup and up pops the login screen. I log in. Then I get the "Checking Time Machine Backup...." And it just keeps checking and checking. The external hard drive is making all sorts of noises, like it is working away, but it just keeps checking. Also have the spinning beach ball....
How long does this go on before we get on with it?

LOL.. didn't see your answer until now. I feel pretty good as I did exactly what you recommended. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.
Here's the rundown on what I did.
LOL. I see y'all didn't know what to do either!!
Well after puzzling for a bit I finally aborted the process. I tried connecting my hard drive directly to the computer - but then it would not recognize the backup on the external drive.
So finally, I rebooted using the install disk and selected utilities and restore and voila, we were in business.
Restore said it would take 16 hours and went to bed - 11am. Got up at 5 and it was complete (guess it really didn't take that long) So far, everything looks great!!!!!
Hope this helps someone out there.

  • Elements 11 will not properly import from hard drive video of 352 x 480.  Audio is fine.

Hello All,  I'm wanting to import VHS video that was burned to a DVD.  Frame size is 352 x 480.  Elements shows it, even after rendering, as very distorted video on the monitor panel.  Audio is fine. Anybody here have an idea how to conform my video to the Project?

    alexmorgan43
    Thank you for the reply.
(Note: It would be better also to know...frame rate and progressive or interlaced video...NTSC or PAL setup...but for now....with some assumptions...
Although I have never run into a DVD-VIDEO video file with the 352 x 480 (4:3) resolution, it does exist apparently.
DVD-Video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From my perspective, if your client's goal is DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc for this source, I do not see that Premiere Elements (any version)
is going to produce a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc with video files 352 x 480 (4:3). It will give you (NTSC) 720 x 480 4:3 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second
    or (PAL) 720 x 576 4:3 @ 25 interlaced frames per second.
If your client can settle for your 352 x 480 (4:3) source exported to a file saved to the computer hard drive, then Premiere Elements 11 can give you a MPEG2.mpg
    file with a 352 x 480 4:3 resolution.
But, assuming the NTSC DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc workflow....with Frame Width = 480 pixels and Frame Height = 352 pixels...But if this is really portrait rather than
landscape oriented video, then we have other considerations not mentioned below....and I suspect we may be going in that direction...the answers will be in the details...
    1. Open Premiere Elements 11 to the Expert workspace. Go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
    2. In Change Setting, select
    NTSC
    FLIP
    Flip Mino and Ultra 29_97p
OK out of there. In the New Project dialog that next appears,
make sure that you have a check mark next to Force Selected Project Settings on This Project. OK out of there.
    3. Back in the Expert workspace, import your VTS_02_1.VOB using the project's Add Media/Files and Folders to get
the file into Projects Assets from where it is dragged to the Timeline.
(Typically the DVD-VIDEO's video files start with VTS_01_1.VOB, but not always. This may be one of those not always times. Just
check that your video is represented in those video files (VTS_).
    4. Edit, Add Menu if you want.
    5. Publish+Share/Disc/DVC disc with preset NTSC_Dolby DVD for the NTSC DVD-VIDEO Standard 4:3 on DVD disc
@ 29.97 interlaced frames per second.
    6. Moment of truth...what does that look like on your TV's DVD player.
Please review and consider and then we can fine tune if my assumptions did not meet your actual details.
    Thanks.

  • External hard drive not working on iMac

I have a lacie external harddrive that i used on a pc.  i am trying to use it on my new iMac but I can't access files or transfer files from the external hard drive to my iMac or vice versa.  How can I fix this problem?  Should I format it to work on my iMac and if so, will that wipe my external harddrive clean.

The above method may not work with contacts that were created by an older version of the Contacts application.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Starting from the Finder, locate the snapshot from which you want to restore. Press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V) and press return. Select the AddressBook folder in the snapshot, then right-click and select
    Restore "AddressBook" to...
from the contextual menu. Choose the Desktop as the location.
Exit Time Machine and open Contacts. From the menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import...
Import the file "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" from the folder you created on the Desktop. After importing, you can delete the folder.

  • Lightroom 5.3 crashes when I try to import from hard drive

I was running LR 5.2 and when this happened I upgraded to 5.3, same result. When I go to import from my hard drive, it allows me to select the drive and open the top level folders on the drive. When I go to open the lower level folders where my images are stored, the program stops working. The whole screen grays over and eventually says that the program has stopped working...windows wants to close it and check for a solution.
I have rebooted the computer, same result.
    Win 7 64 bit, i5, 16 gig RAM

It is a known issue that Adobe isn't discussing.
The best workaround I have found is to remove any videos from the storage media then try importing -- works as it should (minus videos) for me now.
I would not suggest the normal suggestion of rebooting....I mean deleting your preferences file (I already tried it).

  • External hard drive not working with Time Machine

I have an Iomega network hard drive attached via ethernet cable to my Airport Extreme router.
I plugged the hard drive in. Everything works like it should. I can see the drive in Finder and I can read and write to the drive. I do share the network drive in a mixed WIN and OS X environment. I never had to reformat the drive and I can read/write to the drive with no problems from all of my computers.
I turned on Time Machine on my iMac and walked through the simple setup screens there. I never set anything up on the hard drive through the drive interface software. And Time Machine worked fine for about 4 months. Then all of a sudden, Time Machine just stopped backing up and I got all kinds of error messages saying that the TIme Machine backup failed.
So I went into Time Machine, turned it off, turned it back on. No luck. Same error messages.
So I started fresh. I deleted the prior Time Machine backups and I am back at the TIme Machine set up screen. OS X can see the TIme Machine share on my external hard drive and I tell the setup wizard that's the drive I want to use.
Then I get a window that says it's trying to connect to the external hard drive which I call "Cloud_Drive". After about 30 seconds, I get an error window that says
"There was a problem connecting to the server "Cloud_Drive-TimeMachine"
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
At this point the external drive is still visible in FInder and I can read/write to it from my iMac. I just cannot understand why Time Machine was working and then all of a sudden it stopped.
I did go into the software management of the drive and found an area in which to turn Time Machine on on the drive's side. Which I never did before so I turned it on and then I'm prompted to enter the name of the computer and the ethernet ID. I entered the name of the iMac and I have tried using the WiFI MAC address - no luck getting TIme Machine to work and I've also entered Terminal, found a MAC address under the line titled "ether" and still the same result.
I have also changed the destination of the Time Machine files on the external hard drive and the Time Machine wizard does write a sparcebundle file to that new location but still get the same error message above.

Is it a firewire ext. HD?
Yes, many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
    Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.

  • WD External Hard drive not working with new Macbook Pro

I have recently upgraded to a new Macbook Pro and when connecting a WD 1 TB Passport external hard drive, it doesn't appear on the MBP, but when I connect it to my old Macbook running 10.5.8, it appears normally. Is this a problem with formatting or an issue because it is USB 2.0...
Any help appreciated as I have a lot of data on the hard drive and would like to be able to use it with my new MBP.

I'm on Lion, with similar issues with two WD external HD. But what I found fixed the problem was to:
    1. go to the manufacturer's website (in this case Western Digital),
    2. locate my external HD, download the download.
For instance, I downloaded the WD Drive Utilities for Mac (for My Passport for Mac USB 3.0):
    http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=219&sid=157&lang=en
    Install the downloaded app.
    3. Plug in external (this part, I think is important) directly into your tower or laptop (as opposed to through a USB multi-plug extender). Possibly this is because you access more power?
[I'm trying to remember in which order everything happened. But I think at this point the external hard drive mounted]
    4. Install the software that is found on the external HD (in my case, it was a brand new device, so that had never been installed).
    5. Run "WD Drive Utilities" and run diagnostics.
    6. Test to see if it holds. Unmount the External HD. Unplug. Replug in and see if it mounts.
Note: I have not yet tested to see if plugging in the external somewhere other than directly into the tower also works. But I think the main problem is getting it to mount the first time and installing the software. That's what I think.

  • External Hard Drive Not Working Anymore

I got a little hard drive which has two partitions formated with NTFS and the other one for Mac (forgot what it was called...HFS or so?).
Well..none of those partitions work like they are supposed to. When I connect the hard drive it shows me both partitions mounted but when I try to unmount them it just won't work. It says it is in use but I am sure that they are not. I tried formating them in Disk Utility which didn't work cause it could not unmount the drive.
So what I'm trying to find is a way to make my external hard drive usable but I just don't know how and what to use. I'm not very familiar with disk repair utilities.
Some other problems are that I can't copy anything onto/from the hard drive or i doesn't show me anything in Finder eventhough there's a bunch of stuff on there.
I don't know if you need this info but I'm on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.4 and the hard drive is Mac-compatible.
    Every help is appreciated!

If you don't have any information on the drive which you need, try this:
    * Boot from the Leopard DVD.
    * Chose Disk Utility from the menu.
    * In the list, you'll get two listings for your external drive. Choose one at the top which isn't indented that lists the drive size first (for example, 298.1 GB WD 3200JS External Media).
    * Click the Erase tab.
    * Set format to Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    * Click Security Options and select "Zero Out Data"
    * Click Erase...
This should hopefully wipe the drive completely clean, erasing the other partitions and making sure the the whole disk is writable. If this doesn't work, I would suspect a hardware issue with the drive. Once this is done, you can repartition the drive as needed.

  • Western Digital external hard drive not working properly

I have this external hard drive from western digital, 2 TB space, in wich i stored data from a windows machine.
Now i moved to an arch machine (the one i have at home) and it doesn't mount the hard drive.
I tried as normal user and as root, i tried just
    mount /dev/sdc1
and most of the variants (-t filesystem, -o force and so on)
the first one obviously didn't work, the device is'n in my fstab file, but it's not my problem.
here i post the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sdc":
    sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdc
    [sudo] password for pertica:
    Disk /dev/sdc: 1,8 TiB, 2000396746752 bytes, 3907024896 sectors
    Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disklabel type: dos
    Disk identifier: 0x0002de0f
Dispositivo Avvio Start Fine Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdc1 2048 3907029167 1953513560 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
so, my problem isn't the filesystem (i think it is NTFS, but i'm not so sure after all), also.
I tried then to open /dev/sdc (the hard drive) with gparted, and it does not recognise any partition
(the only thing it says is, translated from italian: "it is not possible to have a partition out of the disk")
At first, i belived it could be something to be solved by "fsck", but it didn't seem to help.
Then, i checked more carefully the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sdc", and i found out that the end of the partition
sdc1 ("Fine" in italian) was at sector 3907029167 while the disk has only 3907024896.
Now, how can i fix this? (possibly without erasing the whole disk?)

Shh, don't spoil his reading work

  • LaCie FireWire External Hard Drive NOT working ...

I have a 250GB LaCie External Hard Drive plugged via FireWire into my Desktop and it is NOT working properly for the last 12-14 months. I have tried several things, including taking it to the store, and nothing seems to fix the problem. I even upgraded the RAM to 1.25 GB, but that did not solve this problem (I never thought this was the problem, but the guy at the Genius Bar suggested so). The most frustrating of all is that sometimes it works (20% of the time) and most of the time it is just not working. Also, when I use it with my MacBook, it works just fine, so this gives me a little bit of a clue that the problem is the desktop, not the Hard Drive, this is why I did not buy a new HDrive, and this is why I am asking help here. (By the way, when I try to eject the LaCie from my Desktop, it says it can't be done because the disk is in use -which I know is not)
Here is the thing as today. Last week I was able to drag some music from my iTunes to my HD using my MacBook. I connected my LaCie back to my desktop (which is where I need it to be) and I can NOT copy any file from my desktop to my LaCie Hardrive. It gives an error message like "The name is too long for the destination". Really weird! If I change the name it still says the same. So when I want to save a CD to my LaCie (which is the main purpose of me having an External Hard Drive, I just can't do it).
When I try to open files from the LaCie, it is fine as long as it is a jpeg or a .doc file. MP3 files won't open, and an error will show like this: Disk could not be read from or written to. I can drag files from LaCie to my dektop, but again, only .doc or .jpeg files.
In regards to the Time Machine, I completely gave that up. It would not back up, it would freeze the computer ... I really don't care about that, really. All I want is my External Hard Drive to be able to save my mp3 files safely, since I have thousands of files in mp3 format.
I tried to use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair de disk, but I was not successful with that either. When repairing, after not even a minute it says "Disk could not be unmounted". When trying to verify, it would say "Filesystem verify or repair failed".
I am DESPERATELY asking for help. I am just a regular guy with few computer knowledge. I just want my Apple to work, that is why I use Apple and not PC. But I need someone who could give me advice on how to fix this problem.
    Thank YOU very much!

My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

  • New hard drive not working

I just bought a new hard drive to replace my exhausted 12G HD in my G3 iMac DV graphite. I started up using the original OS 9 disc and the HD was not recognized. I loaded OS9 onto the new HD via fire wire from my G5 successfully, still no joy. So here's the specs: Maxtor Ultra Series 100GB, 7200 rpm, Ultra ATA/133. I got it pretty cheap at Staples. The package info seemed to indicate this would work. If not compatible I guess I can add it to my G5. Thanks in advance. If this is the wrong drive....can I get the specs for what type of HD I should be looking for? Thanks.
    MJC
G5 and iMac DV Graphite   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
G% and iMac DV   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Do the following:
1, Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
You should now be able to install OS X.

  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
    Thanks!
