Import from iDVD image file

I was looking through some of my old iDVD images and accidentally left one of them mounted. I opened iMovie 08 and it instantly recognized the DVD as a Camcorder and gave me a thumbnail of each Chapter and gave me the option to import it into iMovie for editing. I manually chose the chapters I wanted it to import and things were really smooth sailing. Once it was imported I noticed that it didn't include any of the audio tracks. Is there a way to fix this? My current work-around is to convert the .VOB files to an editable format using VisualHub and then import it into iMovie but this is very time consuming. I am assuming that Apple meant to include the import of unprotected DVD's into iMovie otherwise it wouldn't have prompted me to do an import. I haven't tested it with any other iDVD image files yet to see if my problem is isolated but I will report back with my success/failure when I have a chance to test it out. Just thought I would see if anyone else is having this issue.
UPDATE: I just ran across this thread that looks related but it deals mainly with camcorders and not iDVD Imports. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1075399&tstart=30

Ian:
Thanks for the response. I'll look at the Ans 1 tutorial. As for Ans 2, I did choose the new location and I believe Lightroom IGNORED THE SETTING. I say "believe" because I must confess that I did not rename anything in the blue box as outlined and that may be my problem. But I did select the parent folder I wanted the images moved to. (I did not note this in the help question because I couldn't recall or even review the steps I used without repeating the entire Import procedure again.) Fortunately, your post jogged my memory on those details.
This interface and the need to learn how Lightroom does some things is why I complained about the less-then-perfect functionality in my post. Adobe's use of the non-standard navigation interface was a very bad decision, and it leads to much confusion when using Lightroom. The Lightroom design team should have stuck with the OS X navigation interface -- because they did not improve upon it.
Adobe has a long way to go to make Lightroom into the useful product it should have been for a version 1.0 release. It has enormous potential, but for now, it remains too slow and has too many interface quirks and functionality issues to be a reliable tool.

  • Files/Clips from old iDVD image files

    I am an underwater photographer and I have a number of older projects that I created in FCP/iDVD. I have the iDVD image files, but not the original MOV files, as they were huge and were deleted to save space.
    I would like to create a compilation DVD that has all of the old disks combined into one.
    Any way to extract the clips from the image files and drop them into a new project. They are already rendered to the the DVD format.
    Thanks in advance, David

    Frank's reply is correct but a little lacking in detail!
    You will need to re-edit the files in iMovie in order to make it one single project.
    You first need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
    Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
    Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Importing from iDVD?

    I have a bunch of old dvd's that I copied from family VHS tapes. iMovie will not let me import these. Is there any way I can change the format so iMovie will Import from iDvd?

    Hello FULT,
    iMovie 08 is capable of importing DVD (*.vob files) footage without any help of additinal software. But there is a trick to it ...
    Please follow these steps:
    1. Insert your DVD and quit DVD Player, when it pops up.
    2. Open Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility). Select DVD inserted, and click on "New Image" (toolbar). Save the disk image to a convenient location (eg. desktop).
    3. Mount the saved disk image. (Double click on the file, or select open with "DiskImageMounter")
    4. Open iMovie 08., .... and olaaa "Scanning content ... "
    Happy editting ...!

  • Need advice on how to import / store existing image files into LR etc.

    Hi,
    I am just beginning to use LR 2.3 and I want to start correctly....
    I have been pondering how to begin and I was hoping some of you might point me in the right direction.
    1. I have all of my RAW files on my Mac's desktop and they are organized at the top level by each of the 2 cameras they were taken with and then the sub folders of each organized chronologically with each subfolder titled by the location or subject of the images matter within each folder.
    I want to import these into LightRoom 2.3 in a manner which will preserve this taxonomy. I also want to convert these RAW images into DNG files on import. How do I set up LR2 to do this?
    2. I want the Lightroom files and the image files to live on my external Caldigit eSATA VR drive. This drive is actually 2 disks set to mirror as hardware RAID 1 so it is essence its own backup if one disk dies. How do I point LR to create and store the DNG files on this external drive and then set LR2 to back up so that the LR datafiles also live there? Would you say this is a good way to set this up or should the LR datafiles ( previews etc. live with LR on the OS drive??
    Is RAID 1 as safe as backing up to 2 different HD's?
    Is it best to convert to DNG ( I like the fact that any LR image data is stored with the DNG and is not a sidecar file which could get seperated) or convert to DNG with orginal RAW file incorporated? How massive do these get?
    Is it best to use LR2's backup utility and exclude the LR data from the Time Machine backup?
    Sory for the long question...

    On the Import Photos Screen, pick "Copy photos as Digital Negative(DNG) and add to catalog" from File Handling drop-down at top of screen.
    If your photos are organised as:
    Photos - Camera 1 ...
    - Camera 2 ...
    then Lightroom will reflect that folder view in its Folders panel. Also, when converting to DNG you get to choose destination folder (answers part of your question 2) and multiple organisation choices including "Organize by Original Folder"
    (Take a look at Chapter 4 of the help file for more information: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/2.0/lightroom_2_help.pdf)
    2. I want the Lightoom files and the image files....
    Create your catalog on that drive. Move your images to that drive before importing them, and when converting to DNG on import, choose a folder on that drive as destination on import screen.
    >Is RAID 1 as safe as backing up to 2 different HD's?
    No. RAID 1 is a simple mirror of 1 drive on another; so if you delete a file on drive, it is also deleted from both drives. Likewise, if a file is corrupted on one drive it will also be corrupted on the mirror. RAID 1 is good as a safeguard against single-drive failure; your data will be available from the remaining drive, but it is not a safeguard against user error or file corruption.

  • Importing Akai disk image file

    I've just switched from Cubase SX4 to Logic Pro 8. Unfortunately I'm unable to use my library of Akai disk image files stored on my hard drives. Isn't EXS24 able to load from image files, like Halion does?
    I went through the whole process of storing the CDs on my hard drive, because Halion lets you load directly from image files, making this method far better than using the actual CDs...
    Help would be appreciated.

    Go into Project/Project Info... and see if single-layer is selected in the pop-up. If it is, it should create a disk image to fit on a single-layer DVD-R.
    I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility. You can set burn speed in iDVD '08 if not creating a disc image.
    David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his iDVD 6 book:
    iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
    Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."
    I buy Verbatim white inkjet printable in stacks of 50. Verbatim's part number: 94971. They have been flawless for me.
    *Burning speed*: Go into the menu > iDVD/Preferences/Advanced. Look at the bottom of that window.

  • Help needed trying make thumbnails from large Image Files

    I posted this to the Flex message bored, too. I didn't notice
    the Actionscript 3.0 until after. Sorry. Anyway, I have some
    ActionScript 3.0 code, created with Flex that will load a large
    JPEG image (say 3000x2000 pixels) that I'm trying to create a 100
    pixel thumbnail. I have the code working where I generate the
    thumbnail, but it's not maintaining the aspect ratio of the
    original image. It's making it square, filling in white for the
    part that doesn't fit.
    I've tried just setting the height or width of the new
    image, but that doesnt render well, either.
    To see what I'm talking about, I made a screen shot, showing
    the before image, and the rendered as thumbnail image:
    Image of demo
    app at Flickr.
    Now, there's a few things important to note. I'm saving the
    thumbnail off as a JPEG. As you can see in my sample application,
    the original renders fine with the proper aspect ratio, it's when
    I'm copying the bytes off the bitmapdata object, where I need to
    specify a width and height, that the trouble starts. I've also
    tried using .contentHeight and .contentWidth and some division to
    manually specify a new bitmapdatasize, but these values seem to
    always have NaN.
    private function makeThumbnail():void{
    // create a thumbnail of 100x100 pixels of a large file
    // What I want to create is a a thumbnail with the longest
    size of the aspect
    // ratio to be 100 pixels.
    var img:Image = new Image();
    //Add this event listener because we cant copy the
    BitmapData from an
    /// image until it is loaded.
    img.addEventListener(FlexEvent.UPDATE_COMPLETE,
    imageLoaded);
    img.width=100;
    img.height=100;
    img.scaleContent=true;
    img.visible = true;
    // This is the image we want to make a thumbnail of.
    img.load("file:///C:/T5.jpg");
    img.id = "testImage";
    this.addChildAt(img, 0);
    private function imageLoaded(event:Event):void
    // Grab the bitmap image from the Input Image and
    var bmd:BitmapData =
    getBitmapDataFromUIComponent(UIComponent(event.target));
    //Render the new thumbnail in the UI to see what it looks
    theImage.source = new Bitmap(bmd); //new Bitmap(bmd);
    public static function
    getBitmapDataFromUIComponent(component:UIComponent):BitmapData
    var bmd:BitmapData = new
    BitmapData(component.width,component.height );
    bmd.draw(component);
    return bmd;

    Hi Tod,
    Take a look at this post:
    I'll have to say the smoothing of the thumb is not perfect, but maybe in combination with your code.. you get good results.

  • IDVD image files not always burning using Disk Utility

    I am using iDVD 06 to create media, from FCE .mov, and have been using the "Create DVD image file" option so that I can make quick copies for clients as needed. Recently a LOT of my gens, using Disk Utility, have been rejected as 'not verifiable' hence wasting a good disk. Some of them do get created successfully. I am currently using WINDATA DVD+R disks. Not sure if this is an iDVD problem or Disk Utility problem frankly. Have reverted back to creating multiple copies in iDVD after the initial 'slow' burn of the original. Thanks

    I am currently using WINDATA DVD+R disks. Not sure if this is an iDVD problem or Disk Utility problem frankly
    There is a third choice that I think is the most likely problem source - WINDATA DVD+R disks themselves.
    I'm 'not big' on + media for single layer disks anyway, but if you are supplying clients with discs you burned, you really ought to use good quality media like Verbatim or Maxell.
    BTW, I always recommend reducing the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower (I use 2x)

  • Search whole table (imported from an excel file) for those matching substring (this is an input from user) in project siena

    Im trying to search my entire table (data is imported using an excel file - containing 2 cols, description and image url) for those that match the substring entered by the user into an inputText within project siena. I have 2 screens within the project,
    the first screen shows all the data in a gallery, the second screen will allow the user to search for those that match the word he/she has enter. The entered word is only a sub string, and I want to search all rows which match that sub string.. Help would
    be appreciated as im a newbie to making windows apps!!

    Lest say you have 'Gallery1' in screen1 and 'Gallery2' in screen2. your Excel input table is called 'table1' and your input text box is called 'inputText1'.
    If you have bound 'table1' to your 'Gallery1', then you can accomplish what you are trying to do by using this rule on Items property of Gallery2: "Filter(Gallery1!AllItems, InputText1!Text in Description)"
    The above formula will filter out rows that have description containing the input text.

  • Import from .dmp.Z file

    Hi Gurus...
    I have one dmp file but its in compressed format that is xyz.dmp.Z
    Now I have to run the import from this file. I wanted to know can I run the import directly from .dmp.Z file or do I need to de-compress it first ? As its a big file (size of around 20 GB), so it will take loads of space when de-compressed.
    Thanks...
    Sidhu

    This is the script that I have written
    export ORACLE_SID=CONRCC
    export ORACLE_HOME=/home/oracle/product/10.1.0/db_1
    mknod /tmp/imp_pipe p
    uncompress /home/USB/backups/exp_MDRRCC_20070511_125155.dmp.Z >/tmp/imp_pipe &
    imp file=/tmp/imp_pipe show=y full=y log=/home/oracle/MDRRCC/MDRRCC_import.logit seems that first its de-compressing the file as it has made a file with the same name (of size 37 GB as of now & in ps -ef its showing uncompress as running). so is it going to uncompress the file first ? if yes then whats the advantage of using pipe ? its as good as de-compressing the file first and then running the import.
    any points

    Looking for sample PL/SQL package in importing data from flat data files into Oracle. Possible using the UTL_FILE.FOPEN and UTL_FILE.GET_LINE functions ?

    SQL Loader is tailor-made for importing data from flat-files.
    There's way less code to write and it is usually faster than coded approach so this may be better solution for you, depending on details of your situation.

  • Create Quad Print Image from 4 image files

    Many print programs facilitate a layout of 4 pictures (my preference - others available) in one image to print. How would I go about creating a single image that contains 4 pictures or files in a single jpg file? can it be done? This is not a question about print. It is about creating a single file from 4 seperate files (images).

    Ron,
    1. Open new, blank file. For example: Size 8x10, resolution 300 px/in, color RGB, background - white.
    2. Resolution for printing should be 240-300 px/in for good result. It is desirable that resolution of the component pictures be about the same. Check in Image>resize>image size.
    3. Copy/paste each picture to the background set up in step #1. Each picture will be on its own layer
    4. Use move tool to position the pictures, and to resize with the corner handles while holding down the shift key.

  • Trying to import from different csv files into multiple JTables

    This might seem like something that isn't commonly done, but I'll see if anyone has done this before anyways.
    I currently have a JTable (tab #1) and it successfully reads in the data from a CSV file to populate the cells. Now, I am looking into making 3 more JTables. I can tab between the four different tables, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the data to go to the correct JTable. Tab #1 = table, Tab #2 = table2, Tab #3 = table3, Tab #4 = table4.
    Thanks.
            try
                FileInputStream fileInput = new FileInputStream ("upcoming.csv");
                BufferedReader InputCSV = new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader (fileInput));
                line = InputCSV.readLine(); //start reading into the records.
                    //Create data for the table.
                    //the row variable = starting row
                int row = 0;
                while(line != null)
                    tmp = line.split(",");
                    for (int col = 0; col < columnNames.length; ++col)
                        data[row][col] = tmp[col]; //store cells' data to the 2-dimensional array.
                    row++;
                    line = InputCSV.readLine();
                }//end of WHILE-statement.
            } //END of TRY-statement.
            catch(Exception e)
                System.out.println(e);
            }

    I have been successful in my quest to get 4 different datasets into 4 different JTables. The previous posters suggestion to use the Table model led me to this page:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/javax/swing/table/TableModel.html
            TableModel myData = new MyTableModel();
            JTable table = new JTable(myData);I had some very similar code in my program. I use the DefaultTableModel and the SortFilterModel before having 4 different JTables.
            DefaultTableModel model = new DefaultTableModel(data, columnNames);
            DefaultTableModel model2 = new DefaultTableModel(data2, columnNames);
            DefaultTableModel model3 = new DefaultTableModel(data3, columnNames);
            DefaultTableModel model4 = new DefaultTableModel(data4, columnNames);I use the code in the first post 4 times, and only change the filename and the data#.
    I also have some code that counts the number of lines that will be needed.
    Thanks.

  • Creating an ImageIcon from an image file in Unix

    Is it advisable to use this.getServletContext().getRealPath("") in servlet to get an image file as ImageIcon in the webapp (Tomcat) on Unix?

    This is not a solution to your problem but rather a way to debug.
    Have you try methods like setting FileName? Checking whether the The file exist?
    Here a sample of how you may check the error:
    String a="C:\\abc.txt"; // set it to your file format
    System.out.println("Create new fiel is "+f.createNewFile());
    System.out.println("name of file is is "+f.getName());
    System.out.println("path of file is is "+f.getPath());
    System.out.println("isFile is is "+f.isFile());
    System.out.println("getAbsoluteFileis "+f.getAbsoluteFile());
    System.out.println("getParentFile is "+f.getParentFile());
    System.out.println("getParent is "+f.getParent());
    System.out.println("isHidden is "+f.isHidden());
    System.out.println("exists is "+f.exists());
    System.out.println("canRead is "+f.canRead());
    System.out.println("canWrite is "+f.canWrite());
    After which you can see whether can it be read, does it exists etc...
