Import From iPhone 3GS Directly Into iMovie '09?

I don't think this is possible. Can you import from your iPhone 3GS directly into iMovie '09?
With my iPhone 3GS docked, if I go to File > Import from Camera… the only device I get is my iMac's iSight camera. Why doesn't the iPhone 3GS show up?
Yes, I know you can import videos into the Finder using Image Capture. And you can import them into iPhoto and THEN into iMovie. But how come you can't go directly from your iPhone 3GS into iMovie '09?

You right about the iPhone 3Gs work-flow:
_ Connect your iPhone 3Gs to your Mac
_ Launch iPhoto
_ Import the iPhone 3Gs videos using iPhoto
_ Launch iMovie
_ iMovie automatically detects the videos from iPhoto & requests if you want to Generate Thumbnails
_ Then go to the iMovie > Event Library > iPhoto Videos

    Hi Brad,
when you use Streamclip to convert media, use the same name for the exported file (only with different extension). Then make a shell script calling
    touch -r origFileName.mp2 newFileName.mov
This will copy the exact time and date from origFileName.mp2 to newFileName.mov
The script may look like this (save the file, give an exec permission to it and call it in the right directory):
    #!/bin/bash
    for i in `ls *.mp2`; do
    NEWNAME=$(ls "$i" | sed -e 's/mp2/mov/')
    touch -r $i $NEWNAME
    done
You may need to adapt the extension names used (in the example above .mp2 is input file to get the date/time stamp from and .mov is the output file to stamp.
    Have fun and cheers

  • Can i import an iPhoto slideshow directly into iMovie?

I know you can export an iPhoto slideshow to QuickTime, and then import that into iMovie.
Just wondering if you can eliminate the middle step and go directly into iMovie.

You'll need to export the movie out of iMovie to the Desktop via the Share ➙ File menu option.  Import the movie file from the Desktop into iPhoto and when you've confirmed that the movie is safely in iPhoto you may delete the copy from the Destkop.
To send the movie from iMovie to other apps like iDVD that have access to the Media Browser use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.

  • Can't import from Canon Optura 10 into iMovie

I just bought a MacBook Pro 15 inch specifically for making/editing movies. I connected a 9pin-4pin DV Firewire Cable to my Canon Optura 10 (set in Play/VCR mode). The other end of the cable was connected to the Firewire port on the MacBook Pro. I opened up iMovie. Nothing pops out. I tried importing but only the MacBook Pro's built-in camera pops out.
The DV Firewire Cable I'm using is one year old. I never used it until now. Since I bought it (1 year ago), it's been stored safely in its package. It has a lifetime warranty.
Can someone please suggest or help me? Thanks. I am very disappointed right now because I bought this MacBook Pro for only one reason --- to edit my movies --- and that doesn't seem to work so far.

    Hi
May be You find help in my list.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.

    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

  • Difficulty importing from iPhone 3GS

Forgive me if this is a repeated topic...
I have a first-gen MacBook Pro, running iPhoto 6 and OS 10.6.6. Anytime I try to import photos from my iPhone 3GS (running OS 4.2), iPhoto will import a few pictures and then freeze and not import any more.
I read somewhere that the problem may be with photos stored on my iPhone that did not originate there. Is this what is causing the problem and if so, how do I easily tell which ones those are? There's currently almost 2000 photos stored on my iPhone, all but which a handful I've taken myself.
    Thanks for your help!

    1. iPhoto will only try to import pictures in the Camera Roll on the phone. The fact that you have all those others should not affect it
    2. Try using Image Capture to do the import. If that works, then the problem is with iPhoto; if not, it appears the problem is with the phone. Also, if it works, you can then import those pics from your hard disk into iPhoto

  • Is there a way to download emailed videos from iphone 4 directly into iphoto rather than the finder

How can I download an iphone 4 video someone has emailed me directly into iphoto,  how can I get the ones I have already downloaded from my finder to iphoto?

You can't. Iphoto will only import movies taken by the phone directly. Move the video to the Mac and then import it.
how can I get the ones I have already downloaded from my finder to iphoto?
Same as any other material: File -> Import to Library or drag them to the iPhoto Window or iPhoto icon on the dock.
However, not all video formats are supported.

  • Import from DVDxDV created file into imovie HD with scene breaks

I purchased the DVDxDV program and it is working fine importing files from my Sony mini-dvd handycam. When I import the movie file created by DVDxDV into imovie 08, the program seems to automatically create scene breaks (which I want it to do!) However, I would really prefer to use imovie. When I import the DVDxDV created movie file into imovie HD, it comes in as one big video file. I need many, little clips out of this one big file. Is there a way to either import it through DVDxDV with the original scene breaks? Or can I configure imovie HD to behave like imovie 08 and break this big file up? Any help is really appreciated.

My guess is you'll see the same artifacts using other applications. I do recommend, however, MPEG Streamclip and Miraizon's Cinematize. Those let you select the portions of a video you want to convert so you save a lot of time and hard drive space.
Also, recent versions of Toast (I don't know if this is true for Toast 7) can export individual chapters from a video DVD or VIDEO_TS folder as separate files. This is done via the Toast Media Browser. Put the VIDEO_TS folder on the desktop or insert the DVD, choose DVD with the top button of the Media Browser. When the item appears in the browser window use the button beneath "DVD" to access the chapter level. Select the chapters you want and drag them to the Video window with DVD video selected as the format. After Toast extracts the split MPEG files you can select them and export them to other formats. It's possible, though, that Toast 7 doesn't have the ability to access the chapter levels.

  • Import from DVD-RW disc into imovie

This might be repetitive but I am still unable to download my video off of the DVD-RW disc into imovie. This is for a project so I really need so help on this problem. Thanks again!

    Hi
Native Apple Mac can't do it. You need a program to back-code to streamingDV.
I use: Roxio Toast™ to do this
alt. Copy DVD from player to Camera and use this.

  • Importing from iPhone 3GS issue

When I attach my phone to lightroom 3 it recognizes the device in the import screen but it does not show any thumbnails as available.  When I try to import the images it will not do so and says they are unreadable.
I'm sure I'm missing something (hopefuly obvious) here as to how to do this and would apprecciate any help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Switching from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4

    Hi all,
Basically i want to buy a sim free iphone 4 off the apple store, and use the same contract ive got on my 3GS (just put the contract onto the iPhone 4) but i understand that the iPhone 4 uses a "micro sim" which would mean i wouldnt be able to put my sim card from my 3GS directly into my iPhone 4 :/ can anyone suggest a way to get around this?
    Many thanks

I did exactly the same thing, bought an iPhone 4 handset only for much spondoolies and then rang my carrier asking them to send me a micro SIM. They then swapped my number over with no bother at all. I'm stil on my previous non-iPhone contract.

  • I need to capture directly into Imovie using EyeTV.

I can capture directly into EyeTV software no problem. I have an EyeTV 200 with a firewire connection. I can export from Eye TV into Imovie. I would like to remove a step and capture from my EyeTV directly into Imovie. Currently I get a message that says "No Camera Attached". Does anyone know a work around?

The EyeTV hardware/software mpg-2 compresses the content on capture. If you have the latest EyeTV software, the software will let you export the content in DV format for use in iMovie and iDVD which it appears you have been doing.
As for >>I would like to remove a step and capture from my EyeTV directly into Imovie.<< That can't be done.

  • IFrame import DIRECTLY into iMovie 11

How do I import iFrame video DIRECTLY into iMovie 11?  I recently upgraded from iMovie 09 to iMovie 11.  Also, I bought a new camera (Canon) and it has
iFrame.  I recorded a test video in the iFrame mode.  I opened iMovie.  If there is a way to get iMovie to grab the video directly from the camera, I cannot find it.  Previously I used a Panasonic Lumix.  iMovie 09 would grab the AVCHD directly from the camera. I found a workaround to get the iFrame directly into iMovie, but it entails an extra step.  (the iFrame video showed up in Iphoto 11 along with the stills.  I then moved it from IPhoto to imovie via the desktop.)
Surely there is a way for iMovie 11 to grab the video directly from the camera, and I am missing it.  I am running Mt. Lion.   Please help.  Thank you.

I drag the movie from iPhoto to the desktop.  Then, in iMovie, I use the "file" dropdown menu.  From that menu, I select "Import" and then I select "Movie" and then I select the movie that I have just dragged to the desktop.  It would be easier if I could drag the desktop movie directly into my iMovie, but it will not drag.

  • I'm finally moving my photos from my PC to my MacBook Pro.  I have 8 years worth of photos organized into very specific albums.  Can I import the album structure directly into iPhoto or am I going to have to recreate everything in iPhoto?

I'm finally moving my photos from my PC to my MacBook Pro.  I have 8 years worth of photos organized into very specific albums.  Can I import the album structure directly into iPhoto or am I going to have to recreate everything in iPhoto?

If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
