Import from JVC

The docs say I can use a JVC Everio with 09
I have a GZ-HD7
iMovie 09 recognises the camera but fails to import
How do I do it?
Henry

Unfortunately, as great a mid-level camcorder as the JVC GZ-HD7 is, iMovie doesn't support importing from the camera's native .TOD files. In order to import footage that I shot I use Final Cut Pro to log and capture the footage using the RCA 3 to 1 that came included with your camcorder plugged into an external bridge. I believe that the same process should work within iMovie but this requires purchasing an external bridge and it obviously takes away one of the best features of the camera, it's crystal clear HD. There is probably a way to get a HD bridge but I don't believe that iMovie would support this import.
If anyone else has a better way to do it, please let us know, thanks in advance.

  • Problem importing from JVC MG 155 (videcam with hard disk drive)

I had a problem importing video from my videocam Jvc MG 155.
I tried when there was only few record in the videocam and everything gone right.
Otried when there were 520 movies and over 4 hour of video (I went to holiday and made also underwater movies) and the program crach before importing the movies.
I can import the moviesw only via firewire but in this way i import in DV mode (so I have near 60 gigabytes occupied by that movies insted of the original size in the hdd of the camera of 18 giga).
    Someone have a solution?
If I import by firewire I reach the same quality (the camera record directly in mpeg 2 and via firewire I import in dv way)?
    Any idea?
Jvc don't support mac because they don't give you software compatible (the cd inside is win only).

    You are right.
But the first time I imported with imovie 08 (the time when there was only few movies on the camera and everything gone right and the program don't crash) i notice that the program imported the movies in compress format (mpeg2) and the size was the same of the videocamera (more or less ..but I'm sure it's not in DV format).
Maybe the prgram crash because of the hight number of the miniature it must generate to let me choose witch I want import.
Certantly Apple mus resolve this bug because the model of this videocamera is one of the fews they assure like compatible directly with imovie 08.

  • IMovie refuses to import from JVC DV cam

I am a new Mac user, eager to get started with the iLife apps, but I have a problem so far.
Using iMovie '08 on my new MacBook Pro 2.2, I can't import. It rewinds, starts playing, plays audio and video on the cam, but just shows a blue screen on the mac in iMovie and stops almost immediately after starting. It's almost like it is getting video but rejecting it for some reason! If I select manual mode, it'll play all day on the camcorder, but still just show a blue screen and not record on the mac.
I've tried two different FireWire cables, including one I've used before on two different PCs. I'm definitely hooking up the cables right (having done it before with other machines) and have the camcorder set up the same as before too. It's old so doesn't have many options anyway...
    Specifics:
The camcorder is a JVC GR-DVF21, 2000 vintage but working fine. DV, using MiniDV tapes on SP mode.
System Profiler shows "Unknown Device": Manufacturer: 0x8088, Model: Unknown, GUID: 0x8088000148A470, Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec, Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec, Sub-units: Unknown Unit: Unit Software Version: 0x10001 Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
iMovie '08 recognizes it as "(DV)" and successfully rewinds and plays the tape but immediately stops playback once it starts. iMovie '06 HD does the same.
Should I be worried that System Profiler has it as an Unknown Device?
Is it possible that this camcorder is sending some unsupported video type even though it's a DV cam?
    Thanks!

    ped xing,
so did the Free recdv work for you ? I found an unorthodox method of getting iMovie to work by doing a bit of Camera Settings Manipulation. I'll include below. It works for me every time with both iMovie HD & iMovie 08.
    1. Turn Camcorder On In VCR (Tape) Mode
    2. Open iMovie
    3. Switch Camcorder to Camera Mode
    4. Change Camcorder Back To VCR Mode & Press Play on Camera Remote or in iMovie Immediately
    Again,
Let me know if the recDV worked for you. It would be easier if I did not have to use the above Trick.
    Thanks.

  • Import from JVC GC-FM1

I have a Jvc GC-FM1 picsio vid cam. It shoots in 1080p 30 frames. Icannot seem to find out exactly what type of files it stores on the sd card. The only way I seem to be able to get this into FCE is to import it into Iphoto open that in Imovie Export it as Final CutXML. Import it Edit it turn it into a quicktime movie use that in Idvd. With all the importing It probably degades it and every time it changes format it eats into my hard drive space. What would be the best way to handle this.

    Just Googled this:
+"The FM1 records QuickTime MOV files using H.264 compression and MPEG-4 encoding that delivers a highest-quality bit rate of about 12Mbps. Its highest resolution video is 1,440x1,080 pixels at 30fps"+
This format will have to be transcoded to one of the FCE Easy Setup specs with an app like Streamclip.
I'd suggest AIC 1440x1080 that matches your video standard.

  • Import from JVC GR-D860E Camera

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to connect my camcorder, a JVC GR-D860E, to my Imac but, as you might have guessed, without any luck. The Imac does not seem to recognize the camera, it does not show in finder or in Imovie. In the store I saw it work, so I am sure the camera and cable (400 to 800) are compatible. Suggestions or tips, anyone?
    Thanks and regards,
    Henrie van Roosendaal

Camera must plugged in to wall (not running on batteries.
    Set camera to play.
    OPen iMovie.
If the import screen does not open automatically, wait about 1 minute and click the camera icon on the middle bar.
If still no luck, click /About This Mac/More Info and see if your Firewire circuits are recognizing the camera.
    Still no luck...check the cable.

  • Trying to import from jvc gz-mg30u

This is a hard disk camcorder. I tried to connect it but the computer will just say that it can not read the .MOD files.  How can I import these to my computer to edit them and make my movies?
    Thank you in advance

What you want to do is try converting these files outside of iMovie altogether then save them into the native editing format iMovie uses called Apple Intermediate Codec. The program to use for this is MPEG Streamclip.
When you download and install it, launch the program and drag your .MOD file into the Application window. Then go to File Menu > Export to QuickTime...
Click on the pop-up menu beside the word Compression: And choose Apple Intermediat Codec. Then click the highlight button in the lower left corner labeled "Make Movie". Save the file to the desktop, then import THAT converted clip into iMovie. It will work wonderfully and iMovie will not need to convert it as it's already in the format is uses internally to edit the video.

  • How do i import video from JVC cam corder to my iMac?

Im trying ti import videos from my JVC GR D240 EK camcorder. When i plug the usb in it doesnt even recognaise it. i have tried to open it in Imovie but had no luck?

This is a mini-DV format camcorder. It will work with your Mac, but you need a Mac with a Firewire  port, and you need a Firewire Cable.
Look in /About This Mac/More Info.../System Report/Hardware/Firewire to see if your Mac has Firewire and if so which type it has.
Older Macs will have a Firewire 400 port. You need a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable.
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030102 &p_id=38&seq=1&format=2
More recent Macs may have a Firewire 800 port. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin Firewire Cable.
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030104 &p_id=3541&seq=1&format=2
Some recent MacBooks are USB only. In this case you cannot import from the camera.
Some recent iMacs and MacBook Pros have Thunderbolt but not Firewire. In this case you need a 4 pin to 9 pin Firewire Cable and an Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter.

  • Importing from my JVC GR-DV X4

I have quiet an old DV camera. After plugging the camera to the firewire port, it seems impossible to import the video within iMovie using the import window. It does not come from my camera since it was working with my former PC !
I am a switcher an one of the main reason for me to leave my PC is the video capabilites of Macs. So I am so disappointed ! Can anybody help me ?

Interesting I have the same problem, though I was previously able to import from the same camera (JVC GR-DV X4) now it does not work. Very frustrating, don't know if a bugfix created this problem for me. Can I go back to an older version of iMovie?
    Problem in detail:
When iMovie is on and I start my connected camcorder the import window starts. When choosing manual I can play and rewind the movie and watch it in the import view on the Mac. But when I choose import it does not work, no picture appear but I hear sound and the timecode in the import window tics on correctly, but the record time does not start to tic but still the record light is red. When I try automatic the import start and sound is heard but no image is seen and after just a short while the import stops automatically and rewinds the tape without anything captured. When using manual, like I said; I can playback in import view of iMovie. But when I press import the recording starts as described above TC ticking in import window but not on recorder timer. Nothing is captured.
The thing is I used the same camcorder a couple of months ago and then it worked, can a new bugfix have created the problem for me? When it worked I used a 4-4 firewire, now I use a 4-6 firewirer. But as playback works fine it does not seem to be the cable that is the problem it has to be iMovie! TC is turned on at my camcorder. Please Help!!! To use my new iMac for movies was one of my main priorities!!!

  • Importing from a JVC GR-D50 camcorder - is it possible?

    Hi,
I have a JVC GR-D50 digital video camcorder which isn't listed on the apple webpage as being supported by iMovie and iMovie doesn't seem to be able to find the video when connected.
I'd love to be able to import from my camera to iMovie - does anyone know of a way to do this?
    Thanks!
    Chloe

    Hi Chloe,
thanx for giving us feedback, we all profit of sharing your experiences with us.....
And that is a stange one!
normally, you connect your camcorder (which is in playback mode), switch the little symbol to "camera" and have full remote control, e.g. there's a "rewind" button below the big window... to need a "manually rewind" is a bit odd... but great, your workaround works.... comes into the never been published book "More Voodoo Tricks™ for iMovie"........

  • Importing MPEG-2 .MOV from JVC into Premiere Pro CC

hi all, first post on this forum, i am josh.
down to business. i have been having trouble with premiere pro, i am tasked with editing footage for a promotional video for a college. the footage was recorded on two seperate cameras, first was a JVC HM100, second is a Canon 1100D.
now we have most of our footage, and i have looked through it when i was on a mac, but then we i went home to do it at home on my PC running Windows 8.1 and Premiere Pro CC, i tried to import the JVC footage and it says the Codec is missing. but when i import the footage from the Canon, it works fine, so i have to right codec to play mov. but as far as i know, it is todo with the JVC recording with MPEG-2. now converting the footage works, but it is extremely time staking and i think it is reducing the qaulity a bit. i just want to know if there is another way for me to fix the file and import it into Premiere Pro CC. or a different conversion method. i am using handbrake currently as i know the programme and i can change a lot of quality settings. i have a lot of little files to convert, it isnt a case of a few big files, its over 30 little files, so i would like a working queueing feature if i convert file.
    to summarise.
i can import MOV files that were filmed on a JVC camera but i can import files that were filmed on Canon camera, and i beleive it is todo with MPEG-2, that is what i gathered from other posts and forums.
thanks in advance for any help, i hope i gave you all the info you need.
    System stuff:
    OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit
Premiere Pro CC, latest, i have some other adobe programs such as AE, PS, and AI, as well as media encoder(which doesnt accept the file either)
    System Spec:
    CPU: 4670k
    MOBO: MSI G45 Z87 Gaming
    Ram: G-Skill RipJaw 8Gb (2x4Gb) 1600Mhz
    PSU: Corsair CX 600
    GPU: GTX 760

MOV is a wrapper (just like the plastic wrapper on a loaf of bread) so you need to determine what is inside the wrapper (white, whole wheat... ???)

    Hi Kenneth,
We work with Sony XDCAM, and as long as I know you can only export it to .MXF or .MP4 (XDCAM EX).

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.
    Here is a link.

    Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

  • BRAND NEW APPLE USER IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP IMPORTING VIDEOS FROM JVC!!!

I have an older JVC Everio. I have probably had it for 3 or 4 years. I don't exactly remember. Anyway, I have always used Dell products and they were tough to download videos to as well. What my issue is is that I have a Free Agent External Hard Drive with all my video files saved in the JVC .MOD format. When I open iMovie (version 7.1.1) and try to import the files from the external hard drive it doesn't even recognize these files as video files. I am no computer wizard (maybe that is obvious) and I could really use some basic help. I want to love this machine. I bought it for the video/photo capabilities. I shoot a Canon XTi 10.2 Rebel and have about 10,000 photos saved on the same external hard drive. I am looking forward to learning how to do this, but could use some much needed advice!!
    Thanks!
    Hoov

I believe this is what you want.
And, here's another: MPEG Streamclip .
The Cyberlink Prodirector software that came with the CamCorder or is available from JVC will also convert to other formats, but it isn't a Mac compatible program.
And, this site outlines how to import the files into iMovie.

I searched all over the internet and could not find anything. I have this camcorder from JVC, the GZ-VX815. iPhoto recognizes the videos and imports them. However whenever there's movement, you get horizontal lines on the screen. Now in iMovie that doesn't happen.
While I am fine with working with iMovie or other video editing software, my wife uses only iPhoto to view her pictures and videos.
