Import from older ibook to imac

I had a ibook and saved my address book to a usb drive and when I got my new iMac I am unable to import the addresses. I could not use firewire because the computers did not overlap. They are for work and I switched jobs. Is there anyway to get my old address book to import into the one on my imac?
I got the ibook in Dec 2006 and I just got the imac in Aug 2008.

sounds like you transfered the Adress Book application itself. that's an entirely wrong thing to save. the application itself contains no user data and would be useless to save. user data is stored in user-homedirectory/library/application support/address book. you should have saved that.

  • Importing iTunes Library from Older iBook to New iMac

My old iBook (700 MHz G3) had a severe hard drive failure, but I did manage to transfer via firewire the entire MUSIC folder and the entire PICTURES folder, as well other data I needed.
The question remains: How do I import the iTunes Library from the older iBook into the new iMac iTunes Library? As far as I can tell, I have to do it song by song. That can't be right.
    Any ideas?

If you copied your entire itunes folder from your old mac you can copy it to your new mac. The key is the library (xml) file.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
You need the library (xml) file also. When you open iTunes you might have to tell it where the xml file is.

I used the same process to transfer the music library from my old mac to my new one.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello Ellen,
What format are you talking about? I don't understand
how you are doing it to make the movie change format.
If it is an iMovie project folder you can just drag
it over using a firewire connection and 'Target Disc
Mode' providing it is not a later version of iMovie
on the iBook to the iMac. You can also import it
directly into iMovie from the iBook's HD using
    'Target Disc Mode'.
Target Disc Mode - Turn off your iBook. Connect the
two computers via Firewire. Start the iBook holding
down the 'T' key. The Firewire logo will appear on
the screen and the iBook HD will appear on the screen
of the iMac. Just open the iBook HD icon, find your
files and drag them across. That's all there is to it.

  • Transfer from older camcorder to iMac - cable needed !

I have an older camcorder using HI8 tapes. They are recorded digitally. The camcorder only have red/white/yellow out which I use when watching on ordinary TV. How can I transfer to my iMac / eMac ?
I believe that iMovie can handle the digital info coming from the camcorder ( or I might be wrong ?), but I need a cable that have a red/white/yellow connection at the one end AND a usb OR a firewire at the other end OR a simple connector to connect the 2 kinds of cable.

  • Lost Titles and Keywords during Importation from older Mac

I have a brand new MacBook. The Apple store where I bought it transferred all my files from my old iBook G4 to the new machine. BUT . . . most of the 3000 photos in my old iPhoto (Vers. 5.0.4) file omitted all of the keywords and most of the titles during the transfer to iPhoto (Vers. 6.0.6). I think the shop used Migration Assistant for the transfer.
I have tried 4 times to re-transfer, using Apples recommended method of "Import to Library . . ." using a firewire connection. But I have no better luck than did the Apple shop: most titles and all keywords missing.
The importation also gave me something that I really don't want: The Original of every photo that I ever modified in the past now shows up in the Library. I guess it is important to have the originals stored somewhere, but why aren't they in a hidden file somewhere -- not right up there demanding attention every time I use iPhoto?
I've been a Mac user since the beginning of time, but am now wondering (especially in view of the thousands of questions from other users as bewildered as I) if Apple hasn't gotten themselves into the category of "If you are smart enough to do it, you are too smart to try it". Should I just forget iPhoto, and put all of my photos into folders of my own creation, and manually copy all titles and keywords from my old Mac while I still have access to it?
Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

First off, there is no part of this process that involves using the 'import to library' function. If you want to do this, you'll be creating a new library and will lose your titles and keywords.
The job is to get the iPhoto Library Folder from the old machine to the new machine.
When you applied BatchMod, did you tick the box to apply to enclosed folders?
Assuming that you did, then we're into file management issues. The usual things that prevent copying are File Permissions (and you've sorted that) or a damaged file.
We'll try an copy the library over piecemeal, and see if we can track down the errant file. This is tricky, as we need to recreate the library exactly or the library won't work.
On the New Machine Create a Folder in the Pictures Folder and call it iPhoto Library Folder.
From the old Library, copy all the ancillary files - just the files, anything not in a folder.
If they work, start moving through your Year Folders. If one doesn't copy, leave it and go on to the next one.
Then, repeat the process until you discover the problem file(s) or folder(s) - it'll be one that won't copy.
Remember, it is vital to make an exact copy of the iPhoto Library Folder on the new machine.
Post back when you've got this done.
    Regards

  • Import from Quark - iBooks Author?

Any chance this can import book layouts from Quark?
I have a book that was originally published by a service bureau using Quark.  You'd be amazed at how hard it is to get those Quark files converted to another format at a reasonable price.  The choice seems to be to pay $800 for Quark (ok, not huge money, but hate to pay that much for software I'll only use once) or to pay some service bureau even more to do the conversion for you.
Haven't been able to find someone willing to just load in quark and export to a more compatible format at a good price yet.  Considering the work required (ie: 10 minutes) you would think someone would be in the business.
There would clearly be a business in this, or if Apple just wanted to get faster uptake on books they could create a webservice to convert Quark, Indesign or other common file formats to iBooks Author so people could get their books online quicker.

You cannot bring in pre-designed page elements or test stylesheets (Quark Layout, InDesign Layouts) directly into iBooks Author to auto-magically maintain your books formatting as it was originallly laid out within your Quark layout files.
The best you can do for your Quark layout files is  export all of the text into manageable chucks (unsure how large your book is) and begin importing into iBooks author. Just be aware you will most likely lose any stylsheets (bolding, colorization, paragraph formats) and will have to redo this within iBook Author. If you book has images you will have to get your hands on the original image files that were used during the production of your book as a Quark layout does not store any placed images within its document structure.
With the recent versions of Quark 9...you can now easily export your layouts as eBook formats..perhaps this is what you need done...
Again I am assuming how your book is layed out...perhaps it is as simple as you state. Doable yes. Time commitment yes. Costly? Depends who recreates it for you.

  • When I download pictures from my camera, they turn out a nice big size in iPhoto; other pictures that have been e-mailed to me or imported from older libraries/other computers show up small.  Why is this, and how can I make them all the larger size?

When I download pictures from my digital camera into iPhoto, they turn out a nice large size (usually almost the full screen), but when somebody e-mails me pictures and I import them into iPhoto, or when I transfer old photos from an old library into my new iPhoto library, they turn out very small--not exactly thumbnail-size, but too small to use for calendars or photo books.  I don't know much about computers, so I don't know how this happened.  Also, I can't find any discernible pattern to why this happens with some pictures and not others--ie: what I described above is usually true, but I have had e-mailed photos or old photos turn out the way I want them, which is in the larger size in iPhoto.  Why is this happening, and how can I make all the pictures the larger size?

Some mail programs, including Apple Mail, can reduce the size of images that are attached to a message. It's happening at the sender's end, and all you can do is ask the sender for a larger image.

  • Import from SD chip new iMac

The iPhoto Library shows the EOS_DIGITAL under ▼ DEVICES -But, when highlighted and click <Import to Library> the window that pops up is a <Finder> window titled "Import Photos" with either <Applications> or <Desktop> in the box.
Sidebar lists again under <DEVICES> the camera chip which when selected does import correctly .. but, _no event name,description_, tags etc. Just imports to <Photos> and <Last Import>
Question: In three years using my G5 and the other versions of iPhoto I never had a problem ... is it my doing something or is this the new iPhoto??
As always, really appreciate advice, comments etc.

  • Opening projects from older Premiere versions in CS5.5 ?

    Hello!
I'm trying to help my wife, who's using Premiere Pro CS5.5.
She edited a movie in an old version of Premiere. We have all the files from the project, but no longer have access to the machine she edited on. We are about 95% sure that it was edited on Premiere Pro 2.0 for Windows. (It might have been on a slightly older Windows version).
We've just installed Premiere Pro CS5.5 on her computer. We're having a number of problems importing the file. Some of them we're solving quickly, some of them a little less so. I wanted to check on the forum to check a couple of things:
    1) Just to be sure: Is Premiere Pro CS5.5 for Windows supposed to be able to work with projects from Premiere Pro 2.0? From older versions? Is there an easy way to figure out what version of Premiere the project file was created in?
    2) Is there any sort of FAQ or anything we might consult about issues that typically come up when importing from older versions of Premiere?
We are sort of puzzling though this together. I'm usually the computer problem-solving guy around the house, but I don't know anything about Premiere...
Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Great to know!
If you bring specific issues to this forum as they arise, we may be able to help.
Okay. We'll play around a bit on our own, and I'll see if we can summarize problems we can't figure out.
I don't suppose there's any sort of FAQ about common problems in importing from old versions or anything?

  • Initial setup probs - importing data from older imac or time machine backup

i just bought a new imac and in the initial install, trying to import the data from older imac. i've tried both firewire and ethernet direct to the older imac (it says it has identified it) and to an external hard drive containing my time machine backups, but the new imac sticks on the "transfer your information" screen calculating both the data and time remaining.
it has been nearly an hour. am i not giving it long enough? any other advice?

  • Transfer iPhoto, iTunes from iBook to iMac

    Hello-
Just wondering how to transfer my pictures and music from iBook to iMac?
I'm not sure if my firewire port is functioning on the iBook so that way
    may not work. Thanks

cjohnson24, Welcome to the discussion area!
The fastest way is to boot your iBook in Firewire target disk mode. The iBook will then appear as an external FireWire drive on your iMac.
FYI, from your system information you have an Intel-based iMac. This discussion area is for the older iMac G4 . You should post future questions in the Intel-based iMac discussion area.

  • Mail - syncing from my iBook to my iMac

I am looking to sync my Mail program from my iBook to my iMac. I have been doing it manually for the last few weeks, but I just realized that I have only been getting my incoming messages. I was looking to sync my sent messages too. I want to stop doing a manual sync and have it all automated. How can I do this? I want to sync my 2 accounts; Inbox, Sent Mail, Junk. Is there an easy way to do this?
p.s. I do not have a .Mac e-mail. My roommate tells me that having one would help. puh...

I may be dragging in this subtopic by the ears, but that may beat adding yet another closely-related topic...
Yes, IMAP enables me to consult the mail messages I maintain on-line, wherever I may roam. But I often need to consult an unpredictable set of older messages that I don't want to clutter up my iDisk with. So, I'd like to maintain the same (sizable) database of "On My Mac" mail messages on my desktop (at home) and on my laptop (everywhere). Can anybody tell me whether the following violates some logical constraint I haven't yet understood?
On my desktop (Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5, running OS 10.5.1), the [user]>Library>Mail>Mailboxes folder contains a big (1.11 GB) folder named "Organize," which is the name I've given to the top-level folder(/mailbox?) within which all my off-line messages reside, appearing in the left-column menu in Mail's Message Viewer. Everything else in [user]>Library>Mail>Mailboxes shows in the finder as ".mbox," but the Organize folder seems to be just a folder, without one of those silly MS-DOS-style extensions we've had imposed on us, of late.
I propose to copy the "Organize" folder to the parallel location in my laptop (MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, also on OS 10.5.1) and then to keep the two folders in sync with my trusty Qdea Synchronize! X Plus Version 1.2.
Topher Kessler's reply suggests that this might work, but I've had a fair amount of grief when I've tried to mess around with the data structures in Mail under OS X. Am I asking for trouble? Is there anything in the content of a message file stored On My Mac that depends on the specific machine it was originally stored on? So that, for example it might become confused upon transfer to another machine...
The whole point, of course, is to be able to go back to old mail messages while on the road. I seem able to keep other kinds of archives with me, but Mail's been scary...

  • I have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them. can someone shed some light please ?

i have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version OS X 10.8.4
and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them.  when i go back into iphoto i'm getting the following message :
Do you want to switch the current iPhoto Library from “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” to “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” and relaunch iPhoto?
I don't know what to do - please help !!!!
can someone shed some light please ?

So it appears you have only one library on the hard drive. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed to that library:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Just copy the entire /Musci/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
The libraries will be identical (date added, ratings, artwork, etc.).
You can do this easily over the network.

  • Import Saved Document Presets from older PS to PS CC 2014

Is there a way to import saved document presets from older versions of Photoshop into Photoshop CC 2014? I have a fair amount of document presets I use almost daily and it'd be a pain to have to enter all of them again to save them.

If you create an action set with just the one action and save the set upload the uploade it to the web and post a link to the .atn file we can download the action and test that on our machines.  You will get feedback from both Mac and PC users. It sound odd that it would work once then fail the second  time. Was Photoshop CC 2014 up before you used bridge menu tools>photoshop>batch the first time or was Photoshop started because you used tools>photoshop>batch.  If is was not up did you try closing PS down before the second batch?
