Import from tape- One shot/one clip

When I import my raw footage from tape, I would like each shot to automatically become its own clip.  Is this possible with FCPX?

Thanks Tom.  I think I've figured out the problem.  The first few tapes I captured were recorded in a Sony DCR VX1000.  They were each captured as one long clip. When I tried tapes recorded in a VX2000 (which I also use as my playback deck), each shot was captured as it's own clip.  Interesting....

  • Importing video as one clip

I edit items on a PC in Avid, an excellent professional editing system, mastering to DV tape. I've worked on Avid since 1998 and unfortunately worked in a PC environment for too long. I wanted to use iMovie to compress those movies to Quicktime to make use of Apple's excellent dvd authoring program by importing my master video which is on DV tape. My PC does a lousy job of compressing to Quicktime (it takes forever) and Apple's dvd authoring is excellent. Unfortunately the way iMovie works now makes it almost impossible to do this. Earlier versions of iMovie, specifically 6, allowed import of video material as one clip no matter how many shots and/or effects were in the footage. Now version 8, which I have, divides and rearranges those clips sporadically. Clips with dissolves or other effects are taken completely out of sequence and deposited at the end of the movie sequence. The other video is broken into unjoined clips for no apparent reason. I have unchecked the box arranging clips by date. It is nearly impossible to rearrange the clips for a smooth flow. This is all very unfortunate. Apple has effectively reduced the flexibility of version 8 from version 6. I can't understand why they would do this. It seems to be a step backward for iMovie and Apple and very disappointing. I'd love to see an update to fix this. Has anyone found a way to import video as one clip with no breaks in version 8?

I didn't realize it was still available. I've done that and it should work. Thanks.

  • Selecting/importing more than one clip from camcorder using check boxes

    Hi.
I've just bought a new camcorder (SD Card) based. I used to use Mini DV tapes.
Now when I import into iMovie9 I am able to select which clips I import. I always choose manual import because I like to save different clips into different topics.
I am able to uncheck all the clips and individually select each one I want to import but I'm baffled about how to select more than one clip at a time and then check the import box. e.g. select clips 3 to 15 and then having to check the box once instead of checking ever box for each clip. There must be something like hold shift down while selecting but I've not managed to work it out yet!
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
I import clips as you do - by manually ticking the box in each clip. Like you, I haven't figured out a way to select a group of clips in one go - that would be very handy! Sorry I can't help - I'll be interested to see what answers you get.

  • Video imported all on one clip..

Video did not import into separate clips. Its all on one clip. How can I get imovie to make separate clips for editing? Original video is gone. Its on imovie6.

    Hi Dixie
Where Do Your material originate from ?
    • miniDV tape Camera (recorde with this live)
    • from VHS/VCR via miniDV Camera or A/D box
If the latter - there are no Time & Date code that gives info to iMovie where to cut.
There is no function in iMovie that can produce couts from variations in picture or audio. (either in FinalCut Express/pro as I'm aware of)
It has been reported that it can be done on PC-Window platform and by programs like
Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere etc. NEVER Confirmed though.
If timecode not present - Manual cutting up only way. (As I know of)

  • IMovie clip length when importing from tape

Having used iMove HD without any problems and up until now have imported video into an eMac, I know but it works, then copied the DV files to my new Macbook Pro laptop for editing.
Now I have the firewire adaptor for this MacBook Pro I have successfully imported a tape into iMovie 10 but now am completely stuck.
Each clip is one second long (5 minutes with iMovieHD and adjustable) and I can't do anything with the whole import.
If I select more than on clip any export function is unavailable. Thought I would export all the clips as one file then re-import as a work a round.
There is also no timeline for editing. The screen shows all the one second 733 clips (12 minutes).
Lastly, I have no problem editing video imported as a digital file, i.e. DV
I may be missing something, but its certainly not intuitive.
    What's wrong?

    Hi
    Help - No I've not got iMovie'13 v.10
    But a thought.
I would bring in iMovie HD6 (if you got that one - iMovie HD5 doesn't work) into Your New Mac - as it is 100% DV friendly.

  • Corrupted clip import from DV: cut into multiple clips, wrong date

After importing DV tapes into iMovie '09, especially older ones, many takes are wrongly cut into multiple clips, some having the correct recording date & time, others having the current date & time. I have a single take, 32 minutes, cut into 685 tiny clips! All out of order... It's almost impossible to puzzle them in the correct order (and I lack the time).
Can iMovie be set to disregard timestamp info from the tape, and simply put clips in the order they are received from the tape? I could easily set the date & time by hand, and even make it understand it's one take, but not if it's a clip puzzle... Help!

Can imovie HD run on 10.6? I tried to install it and it said I needed iLife 08 installed first.
    Yes. It works fine.
    You have 6.0.4, you want 6.0 > 6.0.3 ONLY. 6.0.4 looks for iLife '08.
You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay. WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY!
iMovie 6.0.4 requires that iLife 08 is already installed. iMovie 6.0 thru iMovie 6.0.3 has no such requirement. There are no known functional differences between 6.0.3 and 6.0.4. If you install iMovie 06 from the iLife 06 disk it will probably be version 6.0 or 6.01. However you can update the software to 6.0.3 from Apple's Web site.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/imoviehd602combo .html
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/imoviehd603.html
If you want to have both iMovie 06 and iLife 09 (and most do) just install iMovie 06 first, then iLife 09. You are now UN-STOPPABLE!
Also when you install iLife 08 or 09, iMovie 06 is not removed from the computer. Previous editions of iMovie were always un-installed when "upgrading" in the past. Apple leaves iMovie 06 on your system, because they want you to have it. iMovie 06 works great with iDVD 09.

  • Importing from tape via firewire - event name created, but no content saved

I'm importing from my camcorder tape via firewire. Some recordings work just fine and I get the event into iMovie '09 v 8.0.5 (820) . Other events on the same tape don't import. When I import those events manually, an event name gets created in the event window, but there is no content in it. Any thoughts??
One confusing little addition - sometimes when those events are being imported and the scenes are bad quality (e.g., broken up a bit) they DO import. But when I rewind the tape and try to import them again with the picture coming in better, they DON'T work.

Are all your clips DV? Are some HDV?

  • Any way to import from another drive and leave clips in place?

    Hi
Is there any way to import from other drives where you can leave your media in place?
Whenever I've imported clips from another drive I had to copy them to the library, while clips on the same drive as the library I could leave in place. Besides getting a bit tired of FCP treating like a kid with Alzheimer's, what would one do, say, when a drive gets full? I could see big projects needing more than a single drive.

    elmer

LIke Russ said, the copy of the entire folder structure is similar to creating a camera archive. This copy or archive is treated just as if it were a camera card - in particular, "leave in place" is not available, and you have the option go import just parts of clips if you want.
so technicay even though they reside in a hard drive this is like importing from camera, as opposed to "import from file".
I Will try to describe how I handle my media. I hope this will help clarify things a bit. I am not saying thus is the way to do things, but it is my way.
I keep archives of the camera cards, which I then erase and reuse.
I import clips from my camera archives which I store as external media (copying to a folder of my choosing instead of into the library). These movie files, plus other files that I get from other sources, can be later imported and used in other libraries using "leave in place".
And all of this of course needs to be regularly backed up.

  • Video imported as only one clip on iMovie 08

I imported video from a Canon Elura 100 that consisted of many clips(100+) that showed up as only one long clip. I found info that suggested that it could be that the camera's date and time wasn't set. I tried another DV tape (camera's date & time is set) with the same result. Any suggestions on what went wrong and is there an easy way to separate into clips?

I imported video from a Canon Elura 100 that consisted of many clips(100+) that showed up as only one long clip.
Strange how you complain about getting a single file while others are complaining that their content is broken into dozens if not hundreds of segments.
Any suggestions on what went wrong and is there an easy way to separate into clips?
Have no idea why you have been so "blessed" or "cursed" (depending on you point of view) but see no real difference in editing other than an individual's personal point of view when it comes to managing the content as source material. iMovie will handle the content equally well whether the project resource pointers point to various segments of a single long file or to separate segments in separate files. If you have to physically separate your files, you can always trim and segment the raw files any way you want to dispose of the dross you will never need or use. I would not, however, recommend using a physical/file destructive work flow within iMovie '08 as it is a bad habit to get into if you ever work with anamorphic source material (i.e., you can lose your flag and iMovie with thereafter treat your files as 4:3 content).

  • Audio dropout when importing from tape

I have several imovie projects from many years ago backed up on DV tape. I decided to import them to imovie and convert them to itunes format videos
to store them as computer files. The process had gone well, but I have one project where the first clip loses sound. I can hear the sound when the tape plays on the camcorder and I can hear the sound when the clips are being imported to imovie, but the sound is missing on the first clip - completely absent. All subsequent clips are fine.  The problem is the first 15-sec clip in a 45 min project, but it is critical.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi
iMovie'08 to 11 - are far from tools of choice when working with miniDV tape material - as non of them can deliver 100% out to e.g. DVD or whatever You want to do with it.
iMovie up HD6 and FinalCut are far more better.
iMovie up to HD6 - Can import even if TimeBase code info is broken - set to NOT import as individual clips.
If tape is recorded in LP-Mode - Then You got lot's of problem
    • You need the Original Camera that made the recording - even same type and No: doesn't help as tolerances are to thin/small.
    • Import into iMovie HD6
    • as NO individual Clips - set in iMovie pref.
    • and To TimeLine - not to Shelf
    • DIRECTLY after import - Extract Sound (Advance menu - down) - ELSE Audio get's out of Sync.
Now I use to copy back to tape and CAMERA SET TO SP-Mode ! Just to get a good archive tape !
Good Luck - Yours Bengt W

  • Unable to import from tape under Win2000

A DBA running Oracle on Solaris used export to create a tape for
me to import into my Win2000 Oracle DB. I have not been able to
figure out what to set the import filename to in order to have
imp read off the tape drive. The other DBA suggested setting the
file parameter equal to the mount point of the tape, but I'm not
sure what that is. I tried \\.\Tape0 but that didn't work. I
have also tried to use NTBackup to read the file off tape first
but it doesn't recognize the format. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how I get get the data off of this tape?
    Thanks

    Brad,
There are a number of formats that the tape could have been
written to in, the most prominent formats being tar and cpio
I'd ask the Solaris DBA about the format he'd used.
You may want to get a version of the Unix shell(s) and utility
running under Win2000. There's probably more than one source
for these beasts. The one I'm using is called the MKS toolkit
(see www.mks.com), and it works quite nicely with the SCSCI-based
tapes I've been using sofar. It's not exactly cheap, though.
If this is a one-time shot for you, and if you're not under
heavy stress to get it done by yesterday, you could probably
find some shareware tools that will work for you, too.
    Hope that helps.
    All the best

  • How to import mini dv tape as one clip?

I am trying to backup some old mini dv tapes.  When I import from fcpx it splits the clips into individual files each time there's a scene change.  I don't want this to occur and would like just one long clip to be recorded.  How do I do this?  Is there a way to stop fcpx from splitting clips?
Any help would be great appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

Thanks Andy for giving the time and energy to try and solve this.  I really appreciate it.
The sorting option is new to me so thanks for telling about that (I've just downloaded the 30-day trial version of FCPX last  night to hopefully address this one single issue that iMovie cannot do so I am totally new to FCPX but it's pretty intuitive especially being familiar with iMovie. This is my first and only version of FCP and will likely buy it if it can help me with this one huge hurdle).
There are several configurations that can be tried for both "Group Clips By" and "Arrange Clips By" but I was unable to find the right combination for both categories to give me the results I need.  Perhaps I've not done this correctly and all I need is the right coaching for what both settings should be at.
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking about for the Inspector view information.  I will try to attach an image of my screen.  It appears that each clip has the label of what day it was shot and what time.  The Master video however has clips arranged completely out of chronological order and so there lies the problem.  Perhaps you were asking about something else though and I'm just not sure what it is.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME YOUR THOUGHTS!  It's kind of impossible to find help on this or a complete definitive answer so your time is very much appreciated.  If you travel to McCall, Idaho for a ski trip I will buy you a lunch or copious amounts of microbrewed beer.

  • Capture MiniDV tape as one clip

I am doing my first MiniDV tape capture. I rewound the tape, clicked play and Capture Now. When the tape was done, it was divided up into clips. I don't want this. How do I import it as one clip? (it broke it up into 5 clips of varying length) this is a friends home video.

If you are working with DV/NTSC or DV/PAL material, Final Cut Pro does not automatically segment the capture (unless there are time code breaks).
If you have HDV footage, I believe there is a check box somewhere in the capture settings to turn off the automatic clip generation.

  • Canon HV-40 and iMovie '09.  CAN'T IMPORT FROM CAMERA!

Canon HV-40 (USB) and iMovie '09 8.0.3 (802) - (USB Based video editing software) NOT TALKING!!!!
Just bought the camera because my new MacBook does NOT have a FIREWIRE connection.
    Now I have three cameras.
Two Firewire ones, and one USB.
Can't work either with iMovie '09, nor iMovie HD 6.0.3 (267.2).
    Thank you for helping me...

To import from Tape based cameras, you need Firewire. If you can still return your MacBook, trade it in for the 13" MacBook Pro with Firewire that was announced last week.

  • When I capture from tape, express 4 now breaks my captured material into separate shots, an icon in the browser for each. Before it captured the whole clip till I hit escape, and created just one Icon. How to i get back the way it was.

When I capture material from tape with final cut express 4, it used to create one icon for the whole clip. Now, when i capture, it breakes  the material down into many browser icons, shot by shot. I dont want that. How to I return to what I ahd before/

What you describe is normal behavior for HDV capture using FCE.
DV captures as one clip or may split the clip if there are timecode breaks on the tape.
HDV always breaks clips at the shot changes using FCE.
HDV cameras can downconvert to DV even if HDV was used to record the footage so it's important to know what the camera outputs during FCE capture.
Maybe this is why you have had mixed results with the differing capture windows?
