Import from two cards

Just a question about importing into LR3 from a camera with two cards.
I import from a camera with two card slots.  I record RAW files to one card and JPG files to the other as a backup.  How is it possible to import just the RAW files not the JPG files?
And does the DONT IMPORT SUSPECTED DUPLICATES option work?

Use a card reader.
If you need to import directly from the camera, this may depend on the camera and setup, I assume that importing directly from the camera mounts both cards as separate volumes.  You should be able to choose which one is the source images you want in the import dialogue (on the left.)
Lr will do its best to not support duplicates already present in the catalogue.

  • How Can I Delete Originals I Don't Care to Keep When Importing From SD Card?

    Hi All,
Just installed LR3 thanks to Santa. Have been going thru the video tutorials as well as the Lightroom_3_Help PDF and Lightroom-GettingStarted_Lo PDF but I can't figure out how to simply delete files from the gitgo when importing from SD Card or from my HDD (files already moved to HDD but not yet culled or imported into LR3). I was hoping I could, in LIBRARY, just r/c on a file that is plainly not worth keeping and just delete it so I dont have to do it later. Seems like I could, this way, be able to concentrate more on the shots requiring editing.
Also, need suggestions as to how I should import my files using DNG, Copy, Move, or Add. First off, I am not a working pro but am an occasional serious amateur. I'm picky and I like things to look good the first time and I like options.  The pix already on my HDD are in the PICTURES folder; those imported from SD card get moved to that PICTURES folder. I have, in the past, moved the processed verssions to a different DESTINATION folder - now I still have the originals and I have processed copies to post and share.
I understand that LR3 does ND editing but I assume that if I only keep a DNG then any time I want a JPEG or PNG of a picture I have to open LR3 to make one. Since I only have been shooting a few hundred pix a year (though with my new D5000 this will change) I am not gonna load up my HDD any time soon. So, is there a way I can make a DNG file, keep the original RAW or JPEG file AND save a processed JPEG or PNG copy in my DESTINATION folder in one swell foop?
    Thanks in advance,

The LR Exchange site has three plug-ins that allow you to keep a "mirror" copy of your DNG/RAW images in JPG format for use by others without having to go into LR and generate them when needed.  The link is:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?searchfield=tree&search_exchange=25&search _category=-1&search_license=&search_rating=&search_platform=0&search_pubdate=&num=25&start num=1&event=search&sticky=true&sort=0&rnav_dummy_tmpfield=&Submit=
One of them should help you with this.

  • Import from SD card hanging

New laptop (toshiba qosimo w/20gb ram, ssd and hd), new os (windows 8), new version of lightroom (5.2) new bloatware (toshiba), new problems.
I can usually get one import from sd cards to work per boot in lightroom.  when lightroom ejects and a new card is put in (I run several cameras per shoot) it shows the pix thumbnails, correctly identifies the new images and then just hangs on import. the import bar jumps to about 2/3 and stops, even running over night does nothing.  At this point trying to use the windows explorer browser to access the sd card also hangs explorer. I can click the close "x" on the import status bar and it does eventually close though I must physically eject the card before the "Import Results" error dialog pops up.  I can then re-mount the sd card and manually copy the files into thir dated folders, making new ones as needed, and sync the parent folder in lightroom and continue working but that is very tedious.
I've made sure all bloatware is not indexing, importing, or any other bad behavior. I have tried killing of all apps and background bloatware item by item with no success. Rebooting allows me one additional import but hangs on the second sd card.
While it criples lightroom I doubt it's lightroom's fault.  Anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot?  If it matters I'm using the built-in SDHC card reader which is a realtek pcie unit running the "RiconMan.exe" process.  I've even tried killing that and letting it restart with no joy.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark
    UPDATE:
My third paragraph made me think it could be connected to the built-in reader so I searched around and eventually "borrowed" my wife's USB reader.  I was able to do 2 imports on it after the 2nd import on the built in reader had failed.  Looks like it's a conflict between realtek's reader and lightroom.  I can copy files from several sd cards in explorer so this problem only seems to afflict lightroom.

YOur card should be listed near the top of theSidebar. Select it and check the box above to Open Photos for this device.
You can also make Photos the default app in Image Capture.

  • Confusion re: photostream, import from memory card, events, etc.

confusion re: photostream, import from memory card, events, etc.
Up until a few weeks ago, my travel-photo-handling went like this:
Each night, I download photos to my iPad for safekeeping. They, of course, wind up in Photostream.
When I return home, I connect my camera card to my iMac (where I have my iPhoto library), and I can "see" the photos on my memory card - the photos which, although in Photostream, I have not yet manually downloaded.
    I select and ownload them.
New Events are created in my Library automatically, as I have my preference set to Autosplit Events.
This week, I came home from a trip during which I had downloaded to iPad during my time away.
I connected my memory card to the iMac.
iPhoto did not "see" any photos to import - as far as iPhoto was concerned, those photos were already in my Library.
I had iPhoto show all photos on my card, selected the photos from my trip (I shot over 1000) and clicked "Import Selected"
    iPhoto says they're duplicates.
However, the photos have NOT been downloaded manually and there are NO Events in my Library for those days.
Note: yeah, they're in Photostream, but IN THE PAST - and I mean literally up until 3 weeks ago - the photos have ALWAYS been "visible" and importable even if in Photostream, as long as I had not yet manually downloaded to the computer.
So my question, I guess, is multi-part:
What changed in iPhoto and/or Photostream in the past couple of weeks?
Why are Photostream photos suddenly considered to be the same as the photos on my card which have not yet been manually downloaded to the computer?
What the heck is going on?
I hate having duplicates, but I also hate being confused by something that used to be really easy, then - with Photosream - became annoying, and is now simply perplexing and sometimes imcomprehendable.

Check iPhoto's Photo Stream preference pane to see if the highlighted checkbox in the screenshot below is checked.  If it is then all photos taken by the iPad are automatifdally being imported into your library.
Go the the Events mode and check the View ➙ Sort menu option to verify where new Evens will be located, at the top of the window or the bottom.  Then check to see if your PS pictures are there.
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Connect your iPad and import all photos.  Dismount the iPad, close and reopen the test library, connect the iPad again and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does'nt then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.

  • Importing from Lexar card - error message

This has happened twice on two cards - one 4gb and the other 2gb, so not the same card but same camera (Nikon D2x). Get the error message " ICA download error -9919) occurred ...
Anyone any ideas if this Camera vs Leopard, Lexar vs Leopard or Aperture vs Leopard. As this never happened before Leopard and Aperture update.
Images are rescued from card via Lexar software, but it is a worry.

Hello, I've just upgraded computers, and as Leopard is on the new machine, gone from 10.4.10 to 10.5.1, and I'm now getting this ICA download error - 9919 while trying to import as well.
I'm using a Sandisk Extreme III 2gb card, and Aperture version 1.5.6. Storing the files in the Aperture library.
I've tried to change the permissions settings as indicated in this thread and the blog post at Inside Aperture, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything for me. And the permissions don't seem to be any different for the folders/files as they were in 10.4.10 (where everything was working fine).
The odd thing is, the card I'm trying to import from has both jpg and raw files on it, and Aperture will import all the jpg files no problem - it doesn't give me the error until it gets into the raw ones. So it seems like if it actually was a permissions issue, this wouldn't be the case (?)...
I went back to my old computer running 10.4.10 and tried it there, and everything works fine. So it seems to somehow be related to the switch to 10.5.1. I have the library in the same place, and haven't changed any other settings. I'm able to access all my existing photos on the new computer, so I believe everything's in the right place.
Anyone else having this issue where the permissions fix didn't resolve it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Raw + JPG from two cards

With the D3, I write RAW images on one card slot and JPG to the other. When I shoot with other cameras that do not have two card slots and shoot Raw+JPG to the same card, LR is set up to treat these pairs of files as one. When I batch rename, both files get renamed. The problem is that I do not know of a way to "combine" the Raw and the JPG when they are copied from two separate cards but otherwise are the same photo. Does LR have a way to do this after the fact?
The reason why I want to do this is to use LR to rate, sort and renumber the images from a shoot. End prints will be made from the Raw files. But I'd like to use the camera JPG's as the basis for uploading the images to the web quickly. The raw images often need more tweaking than the JPG for web delivery. To get the images online quickly, I need to use the JPG versions. And in order to do this and not rate both a raw and the same jpg, I need for LR to see them as the "same" file. Can this be done?

Jao, thanks for your post. The reason why I do need to treat the +JPGs as one file is specifically so that I can rate and rename them.
It would be nice if LR allowed you to import Raw+JPG as one but then gave you an option to display one or the other type of file. This way, I could go through the JPG's faster for rating as the files are smaller, but still apply the rating to the RAW files. Then I could also create a web site from the JPG's in LR w/o doing anything special as well. When I am ready to make adjustments to the RAW files, I could set the LR switch to only display and adjust the RAW files. Since LR is already smart enough to treat them as "one file", I would not think it would be a stretch to add a display option to display one file type or the other.
But back to my original post, I think that the solution that you have provided should work. I can simply copy the files to the hard drive first from the two cards and when I import the files into LR, LR should then know to keep the RAW and JPG files together.
Once the rating and renaming is done on the combined files, I can simply create a windows folder with just the files that are rated high enough to put on my web site for the shoot. Then, I could either re-import just the JPG files into a catalog to create a web site of just the JPG's, or easily use Bridge to segregate out only the JPG files to create a web site using Bridge. While these procedures are not ideal, they are easy and will work quickly to accommodate hundreds of images. So the only missing piece for my was copying the images to the hard drive before importing them into LR. Thanks for the tip!

  • Lightroom hanging on import from SD Card

When importing Nikon RAW images from an SD card on Lightroom 5.7 and copying to harddrive (Macbook Pro 5,4 15", OSX Mavericks, 8Gb Ram, 1Tb HDD), Lightroom hangs. When 'import' is stopped, it is not possible to import from the same source a second time (though SD Card is still shown as connected in finder).
Lightroom will then not shut down and needs to be force-quitted.
If I copy all of the images to a new folder on the desktop, everything works fine. If I add the SD card as a library location and import to itself, it works fine.
This problem has only started happening with LR5.7. All previous versions of Lightroom 3, 4 and 5 worked perfectly.
The problem report (to be sent to Apple) is below:
    Chris

I use an SD card and checked it with MS Explorer, no error messages, neither with the restore programs, so I assume it is ok.
In LR I tried to import the files: Copy to new location (on hard drive) plus parallel backup copy to another folder. Seemed to work ok until I clicked in LR on the "cancel import". Import stopped.
I deleted the imported images (if I remember correctly I used the LR function) as I wanted to have them in the same folder but with correct numbers.
Started again to import but as mentioned above, no images could be found by LR on the card. Checked with MS Explorer - no error messages, but no files, all 1.88 GB free on card.
Used two different recovery programs, both recovered all 99 images and copied them to a folder on the hard drive.
Tried again with LR to import from hard drive folder. All 99 image file names appeared in the preview, but all images apart from the first 14 plus image 22 were completely grey (as the frame). And only the 14+1 were imported.

  • Import from SD card interrupted - all images lost on card

    Hi LR friends,
I imported dng-files from a 2GB SanDisk into LR but noticed after about 70 images that I had selected wrong numbering (starting at 99 instead of 1). So I clicked on the button Cancel in LR (the X on the top left of the screen).
It stopped and I started again with correct number. But no files could be found on the card! I checked with MS Explorer, no files either. I tried 2 different recovery programs (one called recuva). Both programs recovered all files, no error messages.
So I started again but LR imported only the first 14 images plus an image 22 or something like that. All other images were grey in the preview and not imported. I tried it twice and also with PS Elements 6, error message: "file format unknown" (in German).
The files are listed correctly as dng-files. I use XP Pro (up to date) and LR 1.3 (not 1.3.1). I would be grateful for any help! Thanks in advance!

  • IPhoto can't import from CF card

    Hi,
today when trying to import some photos from my kids rugby game, iPhoto can't import several of them. In total there are 51 photos on the newly formatted CF card and 5 of them doesn't even have a thumbnail picture, and even more of them can get imported to iPhoto. I get a kind of nonsense error message telling me that iPhoto can't import a picture because it can't get recieved or something similar. If I use Image Capture I get 38 of them imported.
I really want to save these photos, what can I do?
And what has happened, is it the memory card that is bad? I sure must prevent this from occuring again in the future.
    Thanks...
    /Mans

Are you importing via a card reader or are you plugging the camera directly into the computer?
My suggestion is if you are using a card reader, you may want to go through the camera instead if you can to see if the camera is better able to hand off the photos to the Mac.
But it sounds more like a card issue if you have problems outside of iPhoto like when trying to use Image Capture.

  • Can't import from SD Card

My i-Mac, running OSX 10.5.6 is no longer able to import photo files from my SD cards, into Aperture 2.1.2.
I have tried to import both using a USB connection between camera and computer, and by using a USM card reader.
Interestingly, there is no problem importing images from the same cards into I-Photo. This suggests to me that this is not a hardware problem, but is an Aperture problem.
    Any ideas?

If you copied the entire contents (even blank folders) of your SD card, then iMovie should be able to read it.
Choose FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE and navigate to the folder that contains the contents of your card.
Here is a sample of what you should see.

  • IPhoto 9.4.2 does not show mp4 movies to import from SD Card

Hello mates, since last december when I reformatted my Macbook, iPhoto is not showing the movies in my SD Card when I import photos. Before formatting, it always showed the photos and movies, but I don't know what happened or what I have to do to make it show and import the movies again.
If I copy the movie from SD Card to Desk and try to import it to iPhoto, it does, but when I close and reopen iPhoto, it does not show the movie there anymore and If I open the contents of iPhoto Library and check for the file, it is there fisically.
What could be happening to my iPhoto?
    Thanks in advance.

but it still does not accept mp4 movies neither show them in my sd card when I plug it in my MBP.
Is this when you plug in the memory card into the MBP card reader? What do you see in the card when you use the card reader?  Is the Finder view preferences set to show memory cards on the Desktop when inserted into the reader?
