Import function becoming unresponsive

Hi,
We're having a very strange issue on one of our workstations.
After Effects CC 2014.2, Mac Pro (Late 2013) OSX 10.10.2 (this problem was present for us on previous versions of AE and OS).
Basically you can be happily importing files into the Project. Double clicking in the window, command I or drag in - all work then suddenly the import window will stop appearing. If you double click in the project window or use command I - nothing. Completely dead. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it in terms of how many imports. It can be after 3 or after 30 imports. Doesn't matter what you're importing. Various image types (jpg png tif etc), image sequences, movs will all come in fine then suddenly the import window is unresponsive. You can still drag files from the OSX Finder into the project window. Weird.
This happens for local or network files.
This was driving us mad so we completely reinstalled the machine, right down to reformatting the drive but the problem is back again. Reinstalled everything clean (i.e. not from any backup).
We've got identical set ups on other machines, all of which are working fine so this is becoming a real mystery.
Is there any way of monitoring what's going on in the background in After Effects? i.e. any kind of Terminal print out.
We've tried resetting prefs, trashing caches etc.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
We have received reports from several users about this problem on Mac OS X 10.10, but we haven't yet understood the cause. We are unable to reproduce the problem and need more information from users about the conditions that lead to the problem occurring.
It would be helpful to us if you could provide the following information:
- a system report for your computer
- an After Effects log file from when the problem occurs
- a sample of the After Effects process log from when the problem occurs
To gather this data, do the following:
1. In After Effects, choose Help > Enable Logging. This will require you to restart After Effects.
2. Open the Mac OS Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor).
3. Launch After Effects and work until the import problem occurs.
4. When the problem occurs, STOP and do the following:
- In After Effects, choose Help > Reveal Logging file.
- In Activity Monitor, select Adobe After Effects CC 2014.2 (13.2), then click Sample Process. Save this file.
5. To generate a system report, go to the Apple menu > About This Mac, click the System Report Button. Save this file.
6. Send me these three files (After Effects Log.txt, the process sample, and the system report). Email them to this address, [email protected] Do not use a zip file, as those are blocked by our email filters.
Thanks much.

OSX now crashes every hour. For no obvious reason or trigger, suddenly OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly, before the whole thing hangs and needs a hard reboot.
It is not apparent what I do to provoke the crash -- it happens while I am in seemingly any application, sometimes just reading a page and not taking any actions.
This started happening very suddenly two days ago. It might have happened around the time I updated ITunes but I'm not sure of this at all. And I never use ITunes or have it open.
Don't know how to diagnose the problem since nothing is accessible whence it freezes up on me.  I tried software update, but problem continued after. Would appreciate troubleshooting advice. Thanks!
    best,

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • 3D TV 42TL515U Remote becomes unresponsive and TV crashes while watching Netflix

Back in March I ordered a brand-new in-the-box 3D TV 42TL515U TV. The TV has been running great except starting last weekend (Oct. 7th)
I noticed the remote become completely unresponsive to the TV except if I held in the power button.
The remote would work fine when the TV was turned off and turned back on for about 10 minutes and then become unresponsive.
Changing the batteries in the remote had zero effect to correct this issue.
While I was trying to watch Netflix, the TV would crash and shut off and turn back on every 12 minutes (I timed it).
I get this issue when the TV is either hard-wired or wirelessly connected to my network.
    I have the lasted TV patch/software version 2.2.2 Oct 26 2011 - 11:34
What can I do to get my TV functiong properly again?

I don't understand why we have to call "customer support" when this isn't an individual issue, its a universal one that needs to be addressed with a firmware update.
This is just awful on Toshiba's part that they can't even push out fixes for issues like this. It's not like we're asking for new content or updated codecs' to play more file types... THIS IS ABOUT COMMON FUNCTIONALITY.
And what's more convenient, Toshiba offers no online chat or even a support email. Awesome job!

  • Photoshop CS6 - Quick Selection tool freezes Photoshop/ becomes unresponsive for minutes

After only two selections the tool becomes unresponsive for minutes.
I'm on a 2.6 Ghz retina MacBook Pro, 16 Gb RAM, and this in connection with an SSD should make this tool very good to use. Operating system: OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion", latest update.
Unfortunately, it seems to develop some kind of overload, during which you cannot use Photoshop at all. No commands like "undo selection", "quit", "close file" are accepted.
There is no beachball, no other signs that Photoshop is working on something.
Hint: it seems to happen when you option select (subtract from an existing selection).
Hint: the freeze can be shortened by a tool switch (has to be through clicking on a tool, keyboard commands are frozen as well)
Hint: the "subtract selection" move that caused the freeze appears after Photoshop comes back to life after a couple of minutes. The subtraction to the selection seems to be random, makes no sense, and is not the regular function of the tool.
First step after this freeze would be to undo the last selection, and continue working.
If you do several "add to selection" moves, they add up in a kind of waiting line. If you do the subtract from selection move, this doesn't work, and the freeze happens.
So far, I have not noticed the freeze when adding to a selection. Adding to a selection was always quick and instant. The bug must sit in the "subtract from selection" code.
On most freezes, the ants continue walking, I just had one (again with subtracting selection) where even the ants stopped walking.
I don't think it has anything to do with Photoshop working. I have used the quick selection tool regularly under CS5 on my old machine (which was a museum piece), and while I had to wait sometimes, it was never ground to a freeze/halt like the quick selection tool under CS6.

Did this work before, or has it always been this way?  Not a bug or everyone with your system would be complaining.  Have not seen that.
If it has always worked that way a reset of preferences will probably not do anything.
A reset of preferences will reset to factory defaults, so you will have to reset to saved workspace.
Do you have at least 10% free disk space?

  • Tiger becoming unresponsive

I'm running Tiger 10.4.2 and every now and then the system will become unresponsive. The unresponsiveness grows exponentially with respect to the time it started. The clock on the menubar updates in minutes instead of seconds. You can do things but the % CPU usage for system processes is at 102%. So clicking on a dock icon may take a minute or more. The funny thing is you can choose a cocoa application's window and move it around the screen just as fast as possible (ie: terminal with opacity) and it performs as fast as one would expect. The CPU cooling fan never ramps up. So it seems that part of the system is working just fine. Most of the time you have to hold down the power button and reset the machine. Two or Three time I was able to recover from this condition. Once by quitting a running java application.
At first I suspected the 5.0 JVM, but I've seen it happen without running (at least to my knowledge) the JVM at all. Lately, I've been suspicious of Virtual PC 7.0.2 running Windows XP but haven't been able to confirm it.
I've talked to Apple and Microsoft, but no help there.
Has anybody seen this at all, and been able to isolate the problem?

I installed Virtual PC 7 "stand alone" Sunday, upgraded to 7.02 and imported Win98 and Win2K PC's from Connectix Virtual PC 5.x (hadn't used for quite some time). I tried upgrading IE on the Win2k VM and shortly thereafter all but the mouse became unresponsive. After two Hard resets my 60G boot drive wouldn't boot, or even show up in Disk Utility when booting off another drive(also Tiger 10.4.2). I got it mounted in the external firewire box, but Disk Utility couldn't repair it, and even the other Boot of Tiger became unresponsive (though not as completely). My first thought was that Virtual PC killed my system: it's the first upgrade I've bought since Microsoft took it over from Connectix, and naturally I was skeptical. but after having so much trouble fixing the drive I thought maybe it was just an incredible coincidence - having had no major drive trouble for years. After reformatting the drive, however, it seems to behave just fine (too soon to tell for sure), which led me back to searching for Virtual PC 7 and Tiger links in this discussion.
By the way, I installed VPC 7 (not the 7.02 upgrad) on a different G4 running 10.3.9 Tuesday, installed win2k, upgraded IE to 6.? and it has been working flawlessly - so far.

  • Sometimes my keyboard becomes unresponsive when using Photoshop CS6, & I have to restart

Since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6, I've found that every once in a while the keyboard becomes unresponsive.  I can't tell whether anything specific that I'm doing triggers it, but I'll be editing an image and will press a shortcut key and find it doesn't work. It doesn't happen when I first open up an image, but usually after I've been working for a while. As far as I can tell (it's pretty random) it seems to happen when I'm using a tool to apply an effect to an image, like this last time it happened when I'd been using the Spot Healing Brush repeatedly on a photograph. (Of course that could be correlation without causality, since I'm a big fan of the Spot Healing Brush and tend to use it quite a bit whenever I'm editing photos). Note that the modifier keys still function, but all of the letter and number keys are unresponsive.
Sometimes - and lately it seems like it happens always, there's a sound associated with the shut off.  It's possible that the times I didn't hear the sound I had my speakers off.  It's a brief clicking noise - and I don't think it's any of the built-in alert sounds on my Mac, since I just listened to all of them and I recall this sound being different - but the sound is definitely coming from my speakers and is not a mechanical sound from the machine.  I have no idea what might be causing this. I saw someone complaining of this a couple of years ago, who thought it might have to do with a Wacom tablet. I own one, but don't always use it, and this happens even when I'm not using it.  The only way I've found to get my keyboard responding again is to shut down Photoshop and restart.
I'm on a Macbook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, with 8GB Ram; I'm on OS X 10.7.4 (not quite ready to upgrade to Mountain Lion).

Okay - it looks like I've solved my own problem after a few hours searching for related problems on the web.  It's not a problem with Photoshop but with Mac OS X.  The default "Universal Access" mouse and trackpad preferences were set to "Press the Option Key five times to turn Mouse Keys On or Off." So when I use a tool that I'm modifying with the option key, and I use it repeatedly five times in a row, I hear the clicking sound that means turn on "Mouse Keys" (and turn off the regular keys). Turn off that option, and the problem is solved!

  • Every time I open iPhoto (as of today) after a few seconds the coloured wheel appears and the program become unresponsive. I have tried closing my computer. I assume I have a corrupt file but at the moment I cannot access anything in the program?

Every time I try to open Iphoto '11 (as of today) the coloured wheel appears after a few seconds and the program becomes unresponsive. I assume I have a corrupt file but I cant do anything including accessing help. I have tried closing down and restarting but it dosnt help. Any ideas please?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

As Iggy points out from the strace, the OS is returning an error back to the Oracle foreground process, is this not handled?
Or is it normal for oracle to ignore this error, and ask for more memory?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Xserve 10.5.8 Becoming Unresponsive

I've been running an Xserve relatively smoothly for a few years now. A few months ago, the Xserve became unresponsive and after a reboot it seemed that Kerberos had stopped. Since this moment the Xserve will intermittently become unresponsive in which case it needs to be restarted. Typically, this will happen once or twice a day.
By "unresponsive" I mean that any attempt to connect via ssh or sftp fails, cron jobs fail to run, and attempting to launch any application from the server itself results in the application crashing immediately.
While the Xserve is unresponsive, DHCP, Apache, and all port forwarding seem to work fine - most of the time.
Nothing stands out to me in the system log, and more than anything I wanted to see if anyone has experienced similar behavior and a potential fix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No its not, sorry I forgot to add that. Nothing is locked I have monitor keyboard and mouse hooked up all of which work fine when booting from the old system drive, just the cloned hdd wont boot, however system prefs says its bootable and will allow me to select it as the startup disk. 250GB SATA2 HDD GUID partition map 1 partition total cloned through disk utility's Restore function.

  • AVCHD video support in Adobe Elements 8 - adobe becomes unresponsive

I have Adobe Elements 8 on Win 7 64-bit.   I purchased a new camera Panasonic DMC-FZ200 which does 1080p video and stores file in AVCHD video format on the SD card.  I imported my photos/video first time from my new camera and the import is failing on the AVCHD video files.   It just hangs and causes Adobe Elements to become unresponsive.
A popup window eventually comes up and says:
    G:\PRIVATE\AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM\00001.MTS
    server execution failed

    sherveveyj1
Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 is a 32 bit application running in the 32 bit compatibility mode of the 64 bit system and as such has the limitations of 32 bit, namely, maximum supported installed RAM = 4.0 GB of which typically 3 GB or less are available. Many found that the program does not have enough resources for serious AVCHD editing  for medium to large size projects. Some resorted to converting the footage to the less resource demanding MPEG2 1920 x 1080i while others experimented with a proxy method which used to be in FAQ.

Are you shooting 1080p60 with your Panasonic DMC-FZ200. How do you intend to export the footage?
The advanages of upgrading to version 11 for your situation include gaining a 64 bit application running in a 64 bit system of Windows 7 or 8 which will make available more of the computer resources. And, version 11 is the first to offer the 1080p60 and 1080p50 project preset. You might want to look at the free 30 day tryout of the program from Adobe to determine if it is something that would work to your advantage.
If you wish to pursue making due with what you have, please let us know and more information on working with AVCHD in Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 will be discussed in depth, including workarounds.
    Thanks.

  • USB2 Card becomes unresponsive

Has anyone else run into this problem? I have a USB2 PCI card in my G4, and any devices plugged into it (mainly my iPod Shuffle) become unresponsive after a few minutes. For instance, I will be copying songs to my iPod, and halfway through, the copying process will drag to a halt. Burning CDs to a USB2 CD-RW often fail because the burn cannot complete. I have tried two different brands of USB2 cards with the same result. Any suggestions?

    Hi-
Can you tell us the maker(s) of the card? More important than the compatibility listing is the chipset. Many cards that don't list Mac, or list PC/Mac are fine. Mac specific cards often feature nothing different from other, cheaper cards.
I'm also wondering if your machine is experiencing power problems on the USB or PCI bus. Using a self-powered USB hub in between the USB card and the connected devices may help.

  • Controlled computer becomes unresponsive, have to reconnect and keep trying

This has been happening for a while, back when I had 10.5.6 and now when I have 10.5.7 (combo). Sometimes when I connect to a computer remotely, by using ARD, as soon as I connect nothing reacts in the computer that I connect to. So lets say I click, move stuff or anything like that, what I see in the screen is completely static.
But, if I close the managed computer's window and reopen again, whatever I did shows up, but whatever I try doing again doesn't show up (it's still unresponsive).
To fix this I have to restart the computer, and it works as it should.
How can I get rid of the problem?

I was able to find the definitive solution for this.  I noticed that my computer was freezing approximately hourly and began to suspect my Time Machine backup solution.  After a few more steps of ruling out one variable after another I learned that Sophos (free) anti-virus was, indeed, interacting with Time Machine and causing the problem
Sophos uses a technique called "Scan on Access" which means that no files are scanned for viruses (after the initial scan) unless they are accessed.  The problem is, when you perform a Time Machine backup many files are accessed and the machine slows to a crawl and then becomes unresponsive before you can detect it using Activity Monitor.
I like Sophos, in concept, and disabling Scan on Access solved the problem.  But, then I did not have a live anti-virus/malware detector which, regretably, is becoming more important for Macs these days.
I uninstalled Sophos and my problem is resolved.  I installed another well-known reputable anti-virus tool (that uses a different strategy than Scan on Access), and the problem did not return.
    I hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    John in Fort Collins

  • Mac becomes unresponsive every so often

Hi, every so often my Mac will become unresponsive, This happens about once or twice a day. When it hangs it's usually for about 7 seconds. Clicking Dashboard won't bring it up, Clicking on Expose won't bring it up, clicking on Safari won't maximize it. When it becomes unresponsive nothing is clickable. this doesn't happen often. I've repaired permissions and restarted my computer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Without any information about what is going on specifically when these "pauses" occur, it's nearly impossible to tell you much more. If you note down the time when a pause does occur, then you can check the logs with the Console application to see what was going on at the time.
If you have automated or scheduled backups the pauses could be due to a backup in progress. You can watch Activity Monitor to see if CPU usage increases dramatically when a pause occurs.
You can also perform some basic maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • IPad2 touch screen becomes unresponsive.

after awhile, then will work, then stop again.  When it comes unresponsive, you can hit the lock button and home button and it will function, but can't use the touch screen what so ever.  It has the latest iOS and is an iPad 2.  It seems to start doing this after going to ios7.  Then for awhile, it seemed to be fine after an update, but goes right back to doing this.  Also, the wifi will drop.  The symbol will disappear from the top left corner and you can't go into the wifi setting and turn it on or off because it is greyed out.

    Good day shrekfx,
If you are having an issue with your iPad's touchscreen becoming unresponsive intermittently, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support

  • IPhoto always becomes unresponsive

Every time I use iPhoto, my computer (Macbook Pro 2011) freezes (all programs become unresponsive) and the fans become very loud. I lose whatever I changed in that session each time. At best, iPhoto is just very slow with the rainbow pinwheel happening often, and I can't have music playing in iTunes at the same time.
Does anyone know why this happens?

    Damaged Library.
Back to the original Library then
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
