Import hangs when "Do not import duplicates" is selected

I am using iPhoto 6 with a Canon XTi camera. I import pictures directly from the camera via a USB connection. I prefer not to erase photos from the camera's CF card until I need space, as one more way to back up pictures, so when I do an import, I want to select "Do not import duplicates" and to check "apply to all duplicates" to avoid importing the same pictures over and over.
Lately, however, If I select these two options when the first duplicate appears,, the import hangs and nothing happens. After a while I cancel the import and start it again, choosing to import all duplicates. This makes the import work.
Any idea why the import would hang when I choose Do not import duplicates?
Thanks.

This feature is not great in v6 of iPhoto. It will perform better if you first move the files to a folder on the desktop and then import. You can use Image Capture to move the files.
As to your specific query: try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

hi can I have a reply to above question: I just upgraded my old versionj 3 of photoshop elements to v13  when I import photos they are not imported in the same order they are mixeds up

In the documents screen - sorry, new to this so not sure if that's the right terminology... Basically the screen showing all documents, if you drag down, there should be two options at the of of the page: Date and Name. Select Name and your list should now be in alphabetic order.
    Hope that helps.

  • Hi, I have problem with importing MOV files from SJCAM 4000. MOV files are in supported formats for Adobe Premiere Elements 11. But if I'm importing MOV file, only audio part is imported, video part is not imported. How can I solve this problem?

Hi, I have problem with importing MOV files from SJCAM 4000. MOV files are in supported formats for Adobe Premiere Elements 11. But if I'm importing MOV file, only audio part is imported, video part is not imported. How can I solve this problem?

    haben
From looking at the specifications of your camera (SJCam 4000), we know already what video compression your camera is using. It is H.264.
A H.264.mov file should be supported by Premiere Elements 11. On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer? And, are you running QuickTime and Premiere Elements 11 from a
User Account with administrative privileges? Please go to Premiere Elements 11 Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime to confirm that you find
presets there for the QuickTime choice there.
What are the properties of these H.264.mov files - is it 1080p30 (1920 x 1080p30)  or something else? Do you know if this camera is recording with a variable or
    a constant frame rate?
Please review and consider and then we will decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • IPhoto hangs when attempting to import certain CR2 files

    Hi everyone.
After 3 months of owning and using my MacBook, I have finally found that iPhoto isn't a bad software at all, and I want to start using it. So of course the first thing I did was to import some recent photos I made.
By now I have successfully imported JPG and CR2 files from my external FAT32 HDD. But there are some CR2 files that make iPhoto hang: Actually not the whole application hangs, but only the import section (it is still possible to browse albums etc). clicking the "Stop" button won't change a thing, despite the text "stopping..." underneath the progress bar.
A friend of mine tried to import one of the regarding CR2 files, and it worked on his PowerBook G4 - same software versions.
Help. I don't know what to do. Been searching for a solution for days. Thanks in advance for every hint.
    MacBook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPhoto 6.0.5 (316); Camera: Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT

Ah - sorry, it's hard to gauge what level of expertise people have and probably safer to underestimate than overestimate.
So any messages in Console when iPhoto hangs? Sometimes those are human-readable and offer clues.
What about opening the file using QuickTime? Does that work?
It's possible you ran into an actual bug, but it's hard to tell without the files. If you manage to isolate the exact files that cause the hang, you could try other things, like import them to a newly created library (option-launch iPhoto just in case you didn't know)
You could also dig through the EXIF data that Preview shows (Cmd-I) and see if those files have anything in common, like a bogus value for aperture or focal length or something. I know a friend complained about photos taken by the manual Lensbaby lenses, but I don't know if that has been addressed in recent updates.

  • LR4 import dialogue box does not recognise duplicates (and then it does)

I have a strange problem. Since I upgraded my LR3 catalog to LR4 I have had trouble with the import dialogue box not recognising duplicates and thumbnails but if I cancel the import and try again it all seems to work.
The problem: I have the ‘Don’t import suspected duplicates’ option selected on the import dialogue however when I open the dialog box any duplicates on the memory card are still shown and often the thumbnails only show for the first 20 – 50 photos.  When you cancel the import and open the dialogue box again the thumbnail images start popping up and all of the duplicates start disappearing from the dialogue box until they are all gone.
The situation: I am using a retina MacBook Pro running the latest version of OSX, although the problem first started when LR4 was released and I was running it on a c. 2008 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I import a range of files from iPhone photos through to Canon 5D Mk III photos using a CF/SD card reader as well as plugging straight in to the iPhones with a USB cable.  My catalog is currently sitting at around 70,000 photos.
When I got the new retina MacBook Pro and first installed LR4 I copied across my catalog files and photos etc and this problem did not exist.  It started happening again after I copied across all of the hidden system files (presets, keywords, preferences etc.)
    Any ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Nigel.

    Hi Pitmonkey,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you are having issues with your iMac automatically ejecting disks, I would suggest reading over and following the troubleshooting steps in the following article. I know there are references to an external SuperDrive but the troubleshooting is for built in SuperDrives as well.
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • Lightroom hangs when attempting to import RAW files from D750

    Hi guys,
I purchased lightroom 5 sometime back to install on multiple platforms. Recently did an update on my macbook and it was able to read the NEF files from D750.
However when I installed lightroom 5 on my iMac, the prog keeps hanging when I attempt to import files from the D750. Other NEF files from my D700 were ok.
    Anyone knows why?

    Could be a hardware issue
Make sure the cable connection to the D750 is properly connected. Also, if possible try using a card reader. Or vice versa.

  • Photos copies photos when importing even when told not to copy photos when importing?

The new Photos app is pretty cool.
The one thing I didn't like about iPhotos is still present here:  Rather than handling my photos in the Finder it creates a weird database full of all the photos -- and the only way to get to them is via this one app.  I guess maybe we'll have a solution for that in the future.
But I have stumbled across something that may be a deal breaker for me:  Even when set to not COPY imported photos, it turns out the Photos copies imported photos.
In preferences:  GENERAL -> IMPORTING you can choose whether to Copy Items To The Photo Library.
Well, I don't want to do that.  I have 8G of photos on my drive, and relatively little space, and the last thing I need to do is use double the space!  So I chose not to copy items when importing.
I come back a couple hours later.  And guess what?  My Photos app/library is 8G in size!  Photos has copied all my photos when importing.   So now I have two copies of all my photos on my hard drive, and I am running out of space.
Is there a way to make that setting, to not copy photos when importing, work?

    Hi,
Thanks for the idea.  Here is what I found:
The "Masters" folder is very small.  300MB.
The "Previews" folder is a similar size.
    "Thumbnails" are under 1G.
It's the "Resources" folder that is many gigs in size.
Very interesting.  So in a sense, it could be even worse!
That is, apparently the setting prevented the "Masters" folder from getting 8 gig of photos copied into it.
But even so, "Resources" ended up with 6.5G in it -- even though no files were copied!
    Wild.
Other photo management apps (e.g., Lightroom) have sort of a 10% overhead, not a 90% overhead -- i.e., close to the same size as the actual photos themselves.
I should probably start a fresh question, now that you have solved half the mystery:  Yes, the actual photos were not imported into Masters, but Resources gets really big!

  • Lightroom 4.2.  unable to import. message files were not imported because they cannot be read

    Lightroom crisis:
suddenly, unable to import images into lightroom - A window comes up that says ""Following files were not imported because they cannot be read". I was in the process of importing images - 10 images were imported from the shoot then the import stopped.
I tested the card and the card readers by using cards from different cameras and using different card readers. I was able to import the images into a folder on my desktop so know nothing is corrupted.. The memory cards are good, my card readers are good. no setting have changed in my camera. Nothing has changed in my routine. Have been using lightroom for several years.
I import through a card reader, convert to DNG and save on an external hard drive. All very ordinary.
No one I have contacted has had nor knows of anyone who has had this problem.
Unable to get in touch with anyone at Adobe.
Thank you for any help or direction to tec support
    Barbara Nelson
    [email protected]

On a quick read, it sounds like the same issue that had me dead in the water for 7 days. (LR 4.2)  I tested everything - my card readers are good, the memory cards are not corrupted, tried different cards from different cameras, etc. Working my way through all my tech savvy friends and professionals, I was lucky to connect with a great sr. tech person at Adobe.  After trouble shooting  all lightroom possibilities (3 hours on the phone) we checked my external hard drive where all the images are stored.  Even tho the external hard drive had plenty of space and "told me" that it was healthy and functioning well, Adobe had me go into the external hard drive's properties/tools and do a "check for errors.  12 hours later after the program went though the drive one file at a time, it found errors, moved them to a separate folder, and now all is functioning OK.  The hard drive had not crashed nor were any images lost.  As can happen after some time there must have been a scratch or similar that prevented more images from being written  (or read) to the drive.  Even though all is working OK at this time, I will replace my external hard drive (and it's back up external drive).just in case there are more "bumps" on the external hard drive.
My tech knowledge is limited, and I am not intuitive  about anything digital, so can't add any more information then the experience I had.

  • IPhoto '06 - '08 Import Issues: Album Names Not Imported; Grouped by Date

I imagine my circumstances aren't uncommon... After a clean install of Leopard and iLife '08 on my MacBook, I wanted to import my iPhoto '06 library into iPhoto '08. I had archived on an external hard drive the iPhoto Pictures directory from iPhoto '06 (the directory from ~user/Documents/Pictures/iPhoto Pictures/).
Using the File>Import to Library function in iPhoto '08 and selecting the iPhoto '06 library resulted in all of the pictures coming in, *but they weren't organized in the albums I created in iPhoto '06*. Instead, all pictures were organized into groups by date.
What in the ham sandwich is the proper way to import an iPhoto '06 library so that all of the old album names and organization is maintained in iPhoto '08?
    Many thanks for your time!

    TD,
Many thanks for the advice. I found one other thing that I wanted to ask about before giving this a whirl.
I noticed that the iPhoto Library in '08 is in fact a package, not a directory. Given that, there are two possible courses of action, and I wanted to know which was best.
    1. Delete the iPhoto '08 "iPhoto Library" package and replace it with the '06 "iPhoto Library" directory.
    2. Replace the contents of the '08 "iPhoto Library" package with the contents of the '06 "iPhoto Library" directory?
I was uncertain about option 1, as I didn't know how getting rid of the package would affect the application (or if it's needed).
    Cheers,
    R

  • Select only photo to import in iPhoto, do not import video

I use my Sony camcorder to record video and also to take photos.
In iPhoto I would like to import only my photos, but not my videos. I use a different application for my hd video.
But in iPhoto import windows it's not possible to select automatically "only the photo".
The only alternative is to select manually each photo ... What is painful with a lot of new photos and video!
    Any solution ?

    Why is it private?
THat is not an iPhoto issue - you need to contact support for your camera for questions on wy they do things - even on iPhoto we are users just like you and do not know why things are - we help you use what is
And do you recommend importing directly from the finder to a folder on my external drive to keep for back up and then copying into iPhoto/Aperture?
That is a personal choice - I see no use in it and prefer having a great backup system for everything on my computer (I run Time Machine and do a daily bootable clone - plus an occasional off site backup - and do not erase my SD cards for a year or more)
Perhaps I should have started another post

  • Iphoto hangs when trying to import photos

I've tried several times to import about 17,000 photos. Things seems to go well at first but the app always stops responding at some point, and I have to kill its process. Each time I've created a new library in a new location to give it a fresh start, but the problem always occurs. What can I do?

Why not try in batches? When you import to iPhoto the pics are copied to the library, the metadata - Exif, IPTC and colour - parsed and recorded, thumbnails created, Scanned for Faces, Places and so on. So while it might well be supported on a multi-core MacPro with 16 gigs of RAM it seems likely to me that on a MB it may choke on 17k of images. Only way to test is to import in Batches, of course.

  • Quicktime hangs when trying to import large TIFF or TGA sequence

I recently installed QT Pro on my PC workstation running Win XP Pro.
I have some TIFF and TGA sequences(both uncompressed, TIFFs are 16bit and TGAs are 8bit) that are very large 29000 frames(film reels) at a 1080p resolution(1920x1080).
I was trying to convert them to QT files directly from QT Pro, without having to go through a 3'rd party app for that... but regardless of the seq. that I try to convert, Quicktime just hangs and even after 1h 30min doesn't finish importing the sequence but it still eats computer resources.
Is this a "feature" and the sequences I try to import are to big?.. or it's not normal and there's a workaround for this?
    Thanks

Well... the size plays a role in all of this but not like that. A TIFF frame, 16bit, 1080p goes around 12MB which is decent. I also switched on TGA @ 8bit same settings... one TGA frame is around 7MB at this res.
Except all of this... the problem lies in importing the seq...
As you know the importing procedure is a caching operation(long story short) after caching the files you can export it in different QT flavors.
I have a RAID-0 10TB DAS on my workstation so storage space is not a problem nor processing power.
What really amazes me is that other 3'rd party apps that use QT can import the entire seq. in less than 5 min. and the render with compression set to None @ 1080 24p takes about 1h and 30min.
I didn't expect miracles from QT Pro... but neither this. I was just searching for a light app. to transcode my image seq. into HD Quicktimes. Amazingly QT Pro failed at this task.

Hi All. I'm attempting to import an FCP7 sequence into Premiere Pro CC 2014.2. Every time I try to import, the Translation Report dialog box and the "Import Files" progress indicator appear, but then PP just hangs with the spinning beach ball. I've tried various sequences and different PP projects, but have had no success. I've Trashed PP Prefs using Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager, and rebooted, but neither seemed to help.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    I'm on a Mac Pro 5,1 (2010), 32GB RAM, GeForce GTX 680 graphics card, OS X 10.10.1

I'm having the same issue. I tried exporting the sequence as XML V5, V4 and even V1, with the same result. The "Import Files" box opens, the queue bar is empty and it locks up.
