Import HD video with my Canon HV20

Hi, I have a Canon HV20 which is a High Def camera. I bought a firecable at the Apple Store, but now I'm trying to import it into Final Cut. I used the Log and Capture, then went and imported it as HV NTSC 48 Khz. When I burn it with DVD Studio Pro it doesn't look like it is HD. So what is a correct preset that Final Cut will recognize it because when I select like one of the DVDPRO options he won't recognize it. Thank you and much obliged for any help.

Thanks for your reply. I still can't find it in the list, attached is a screen shot. Thank you for your help!

  • Can you link Audio to any video in time line so it functions as if you imported a video with audio?

    Hi there...
I have video and I also have externally recorded audio to sync with it. Now I understand that you can drag the video in (delete its audio if it has any) and then drag a audio clip into the timeline and place it under neath it. I can get it synced and all that fine.
The problem I have is that it is cumbersome to edit like this. When you import a video with embedded audio if you make a cut it cuts the video AND the audio attached to it in one go. If you do it the way I am doing now you need to add extra cuts on the audio file as well. So you effectively doubling the clicks needed to edit. Also when you are deleting clips and sliding stuff about you need to be extra careful to make sure that the audio and video stays in sync.
What I am hoping for is a way to "attach" the audio to the video with out adding a long and time consuming process of rendering out a video file with it embedded.
Solutions I have tried and failed.
GROUP : This seams like the obvious thing to do.. If I group them I can select them as one, move them as one.. but if I select the cut tool it still only cuts either the video or audio.. not both.
SEQUENCE : The other option I tried is once it is synced I make a new sequence and add the sequence with the synced audo and video to it and then edit on that. I am not editing a sequence not the raw audio and video. The problem here is that while now the cut tool cuts both the video AND audio at once and I can also move and edit easily.. the problem is that now the wave form dose not show up in the audio track when you expand it. It is just a big blank green box (even though there is audio in the original sequence)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I'm still using Cs6.... I found that if you hold shift+click with the cut tool it cuts it.. I'll try link as shifting is a pain...
Maybe there is a way to set teh shift+click as the default action for the cut tool?

Glad you pointed to that thread; the message was proven repeatedly to be erroneous and misleading.  Windows natively supports AVCHD (e.g., Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center).  All new consumer and most new professional HD video capture devices (including all forthcoming Nikon D-SLRs) use AVCHD rather than, say, the .MOV format that you do support which actually is NOT supported natively in Windows and requires a QuickTime install.
Again, it is a trivial task to have Lightroom recognize/catalog/playback AVCHD files.  About an hour's work programming-wise to incorporate AVCHD capability into Lightroom's shell (and Adobe can simply let pre-Windows 7 users know that they'll get AVCHD support when they upgrade to Windows 7).

  • How to import to iMovie '08 from Canon HV20 HD Video Camcorder

Pretty simple problem statement: I've got a Canon HV20, a USB cable, and a new iMac with Leopard and iMovie '08. I plug in the camera, and iMovie does not seem to recognize it -- the only camera it wants to import from is the built-in iSight.
    Help? And thanks a bunch.

You need a Firewire cable for video. The USB is only good for the still camera mode; to transfer still images from a card, if you have one.

  • Video out to Canon HV20

I am using an Imac 20" Intel with 2G Ram, a 500 GB Lacie External drive for my media and a Canon HV20 Camcorder for material.
I was able to capture my HD footage with no problem to FCE 4.0, edited my footage and created a DVD with IDVD with no problem. Want to delete the media and start a new project. However, I read somewhere that it is a good idea to save your completed sequence back to MiniDV to keep a backup of the highest quality video for use to create HD DVDs in the future.
This is where my problems start. As I said, I have no problem capturing but for whatever reason it will not record back to my camcorder (which based on the info in my Canon manual and a check with Cannon support) I am doing everything right on the camcorder end. Camera gives error when I start the recording process of "Check the HDV/DV input" and I don't see the footage on my camcorder.
I have tried Print to Video and recording via the timeline and neither will work. Spent 2 hours on phone with Technical support yesterday and then even went to the Apple store with some footage, my camera and my firewire cable only to be told that they could only help if I brought that and my computer and my external hard drive (and then they would only try to figure something out for 20 minutes)
I am sure there is some setting that is frustrating the camera but can't figure it out....any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I had similar trouble and came accross your post. I have since got mine to work (see below).
What is the format of the sequence you are trying to export? Is it 1080i, 720p, or something else?
My workflow involved importing clips from the Canon HV20 using iMovie at the 540p import setting (960 x 540 pixels). I would then edit in FCE 4, and my sequence settings would adjust automatically to my clips, i.e. 540p. When I tried to "print to tape" FCE would begin to export and I would hit OK on the computer screen, but the camera would not start recording.
I did some troubleshooting. What I had to do was create a new sequence 1080i and then copy/paste my edits from the 540p sequence into the 1080i sequence (and correct some incorrect motion on still images, because the resolution of the sequences were different). Now, when I "print to tape" the 1080i sequence, FCE actually does a HDV transcoding step (which takes a while on my iMac) and then the Canon HV20 records the sequence no problem. Of course, when viewed on the Canon HV20 miniDV tape to my HDTV the quality is a bit less than the original because of the down sampling to 540p. But anyway, I have an archived copy of my work. I have also had successfull "print to tape", with the HDV transcoding, using a 720p sequence.
The Lesson Learned: Import at full 1080i, or 720p, and make sure sequences match your import settings. Otherwise, you will end up mucking around with a bunch of conversion issues.
If there is another way to get non-1080i material to print to the HV20?? I'd love to hear about it since I have a couple of other very complicated sequences in 540p. I will be buying a bigger external hard disk to go 100% 1080i in the future. Live and learn.
    Hope this helped,
    Mace

  • TS3850 Cannot capture directly into FCX with my Canon HV20

I am trying to connect my Canon HV20  to capture into Final Cut directly instead of using tape.  It shows up but it doesn't control the camera and doesn't capture.  Any suggestions?

See if iMovie, will allow you to import, your video footage.
If not, it might be your firewire cable. They do go bad.
Also, does your mac allow firewire 400 and or 800?
Newer ones no longer use firewire, but thunderboldt, which you can get adapert,
for your firewire cable. You can check out Apples web site for those cables, or electronics
    store, near were you live.
    I have had both firewire 400 & 800 cables go bad on me. I've used the HV30 & HV40.
I've never had or heard of the fw connector on the camera going bad. If it did, you would have to send it back to Canon for repair.

  • How do I import AVI video with stereo audio (and keep it that way)?

Today I just discovered that all the AVI video with stereo audio I've ever imported into a Premiere Pro CS6 project has been mysteriously converted to mono. And I can't find any import setting anywhere that enable me to change this.
    Here's the deal...
I've have an AVI file with stereo audio (the file is actually a stereo sound test that I downloaded to prove that I wasn't imagining things). On my hard drive, I right-click and view the properties:
    Video
    Length: 00:00:36
    Frame width: 320
    Frame height: 240
    Frame rate: 25 frames/second
    Audio
    Bit rate: 128kbps
    Channels: 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate: 44 kHz
I click on it to play and listen with headphones--everything is playing in the correct part of the stereo spectrum. Then, I import it to Premiere, click the file name in the left content menu, and check the properties, suddenly they read:
    Type: AVI Movie
    File Size: 1.1 MB
    Image Size: 320 x 240
    Frame Rate: 25.00
Source Audio Format: 11025 Hz - 16 bit - Mono
Project Audio Format: 11025 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Mono
    Total Duration: 00:00:36:15
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
Sure enough, I drag it into the sequence, listen to it, and it's indeed playing mono. Outside of Premiere, the original source file still reads and plays correctly with stereo sound.
When I import stereo WAVs and MP3s, it keeps the original stereo channels without me having to do anything special. I even just imported the same exact file as a MOV with stereo audio, and it showed up in Premiere as:
Source Audio Format: 44100 Hz - 16 bit - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 44100 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
What is going on here with AVIs? Am I doing something wrong? Are there settings I'm missing somewhere?
(And before anyone suggests I only use MOV in the future... that's not exactly the answer I'm looking for.)

    Thank you for that info.
For video, the codec is MPEG-4 Video (XVID) and for audio it says MPEG Audio Layer 1/2/3 (mpga).
There are two issues with that file:
The first is the Xvid CODEC (not meant for editing), and then the MPEG Audio/MPGA. I would convert that file, to something that is more editable.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Import avi video with uncompressed PCM audio

I am unable to import into iMovie 10 or FCP X the audio portion of avi videos with uncompressed PCM audio. I just get the video and silence. They imported fine into previous versions of iMovie. Of course, I can use conversion programs to produce versions that import, but I have hundreds of hours of video in this format, so I would prefer not to have to do that. Is there a plug-in that would solve the problem?

  • IMovie: I uploaded HDV video from a Canon HV20 and then to YouTube. The video and the audio are out of sync. The audio seems to precede the video by a tiny bit which is disconcerting. Any recommendations about how to correct this? Thank you.

I downloaded video via iMovie from my Canon HV20. The video was in HDV. I then published it to YouTube and Vimeo and in both cases, the audio is out of sync: the video precedes the audio by a fraction of a second. The original is fine as viewed in the camera.
Any suggestions as to why and how to correct it?
    Thank you,
    David

  • Importing MP4 videos with odd results

Hello, so I just got a new notebook, installed all my new software and started transfering data. I managed to get my music library back to exactly what it was, ratings, play counts, everything. I thought ok awesome, I imported my videos no problem too. Then I moved on to tv shows. On my previous notebook I had the entire x-men animated series on it, and it is still on my ipod and external hdd. so I transfered the collection my videos folder on my computer, but when I attempt to import them, it will only import maybe 1/5 of my collection. When I add the folder, I can see the titles of all the episodes on the status bar, but then it doesn't add them. Clicking on the file in windows only opens iTunes and nothing else. If I try to add the individual file, nothing happens. They are all the same file type and this was never a problem before. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but to no avail. Any help would of course be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, even trying to add the file individually doesn't work. It only works for the same 1/5 of the files that would originally import when adding the folder. I appreciate the try though, anyone else?

  • Import oddities with the Canon HV20

I've seen some other posts of people having problems with the HV20, but none of them seem to match my predicament. I have mine hooked up on FW400, and three devices on the FW800 port of my G4 PowerBook. No problems getting it to import video, but I have had some spooky results of some clips not being split out, and others not seeming to import at all. I'm dreading going back to look at every tape and try to figure out what is missing. Has this happened to anyone else?

Ok... I may have answered my own question.
Can someone "in the know" please verify that my workflow makes sense...? and that I am not just "faking" things.
Just to reiterate what I had in the above post...
    Here is what I did:
    1. Captured video into a 1080i/60 Sequence setting my my quicktime video settings to "Apple Intermediate Codec".
Note: this made me render in the timeline
    2. I then export as a self-contained quicktime movie
    3. I open the clip in Cinema Tools
    4. Only change the fields to CD
    5. Save off a .rev
    6. Open in QT and export as whatever.
Here is the result HV20 1080p24
(keep in mind its very short and compressed to H.264)
So, just for my own sanity check... is this workflow how I "should" be doing it? Is the result "really" 1080p 24, or could quicktime be fooled into thinking this.
do I love to use quotes or what! :P

  • Problem to import clips video with "Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader", my mini ipad and my camcorder?

I need import immediatly my clips video from my camcorder in my mini ipad with my SD card.
Solution: I have to use "Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader"
Problem: When i insert my Sd card in the "Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader", my mini ipad don't recognize the sd card... And i'm sure the format of clips video is accepted by ipad (specs).
I know why my mini ipad don't recognize the sd card... Because the directory where my camcorder put the clips video on the SD card is not accepted by  "Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader". After some research, this device accept only the video in "DCIM" directory.
So my question: WHO KNOW WHICH CAMCORDER CAN BE ACCEPTED BY  "Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader" WITH CORRECT VIDEO FORMAT (SPECS) AND CORRECT WRITING DIRECTORY "DCIM"?
    Thanx for your help!!!!!

Since the ipad is not a computer it cannot be expected to behave as such. The resources are limited  and so are the capabilities. Some things will work just fine but others will not. You have to be  willing to make some compromises and accept some of the limitations, otherwise you will end up being frustrated. Maybe another device will better suite your needs.

  • Importing problems shooting with loaner Canon xha1

This week I used the Canon xha1 and it was a great experience but when I get home to import can't do it. I get the following error "The operation could not be completed as there is no video" in a pop-up screen. At the both of FCE it states Device must be in VTR mode when device control is enabled.
I don't know what to do because when I try to import the film from an HV 20 or the xha1 it plays in the LCD screen but it pops open the error message above. Is there a way for me to set it up the correct import. Please respond as soon as possible????

Make sure the output on the camera is set correctly. Are you outputting HD? Make sure that's what the camera is set to do and that's the device control you're using not the DV device control. These are all set in menus in the camera.

  • Down loading video with a Canon XHA1

I have a Canon XHA1 HD camcorder. I had the final cut pro on my I mac set to except the video. I was able to down load my footage. The system went back to standard settings. I don't know which code I put when I try to set the easy settings for downloading video. Does anybody know which video formate do I set in log and capture for me to download my video again?

If you've shot 1080i HDV, set the device control to HDV FW basic, and the capture preset to HDV 1080i...
